Home folder: can't "rename" in finder per step 3 in Apple's HT1428

Ran Setup Assistant on a new MacBook Air and transferred everything (settings and all) over from my old computer (disabled) using its Time Capsule backup during Setup Assistant's original (and only) run.
Problem is:  the home folder on the new computer retains the old computer's name.  I read in quick "Help" (from Finder's top menu line) that "You can’t change the name of a home folder. If you want to use a different name, you must create a new user (this requires administrator privileges)."
But Apple publishes HT1428: "OS X: How to change your account name or home directory name,"  so I try it.   OS X 10.7 and later directions say:
[create new admin account, log out of old, log in under new, and]
     2.  Navigate to the /Users folder in Finder.
     3.  Rename the home folder for the old account, being sure to make note of both the old account name and the new account name.
After logging in as new admin, when I highlight the old account's home folder name, it will not "box itself out" so I can change its name.  "Get Info-ing" the folder (file) shows the Name & Extension grayed out and unchangeable.
So I'm stalled out at the very beginning.  Any ideas?
Thinking . . . HT1428 gives a different procedure for home folder name change in OS X 10.6, using terminal to "mv" a new name into place.  The old computer was 10.6.8 and everything about it came over during setup.  Could it need the OS X 10.6 instructions?
And am I playing with fire?

I don't see anything different about yours from mine. I have no problem renaming another account home folder.
All the reasons I can guess at for it not being available you seem to have verified.
Copy and paste in this command in Terminal. Make sure there is a space after what you paste, then drag in the old home folder. It will list the ACLs and any Finder flags on the folder.
ls -dleO
You should only see this after the line listing the folder info:
0: group:everyone deny delete
In the first line of the output, you should see a - between "staff" and the file size number.
There isn't any difference between the move command and doing it with the Finder, except the safety of not typing anything wrong. I imagine the Finder calls mv when it renames, but I don't know for sure.

  • HT3275 How do I find/restore files from items in secure home folder? How do I find/restore files that crashed when in finder of secure (File Vault) home folder?

How do I find/restore files from items in secure (File Vault) home folder? How do I find/restore files that crashed when in finder of secure (File Vault) home folder?  When I go into Time Machine, I see earlier dates but can't see files in my User File. I have File Vault turned on and see my home folder as a sparsebundle.  Do I neede to restore this in order to see files in my home folder.  When I click on it to restore it gives me an estimated time of over 2 hours.  Also tried to restore an Excel file I was working on when computer hung, so lost it without saving or naming it.  Does it exist anyplace and can I restore it?

Thanks. I had pretty much figured out from other posts that I had better turn off File Vault for my home folder and use a disk utility sparse bundel for little information I wanted to secure. The information about File Vault 2 in Lion was new and useful though.

  • I renamed my home folder :( can't get it back to normal

hi, i know there are about a billion topics in this forum about this same thing, but i still cannot get everything back to normal despite reading a lot of them.
a couple of weeks ago i renamed my home folder, which created a whole new set of preferences.
i've done some things since then, but i can't remember every step i've taken so bare with me! maybe you clever people can figure out what i've missed out/done wrong.
i remember that in the users folder i renamed the new (incorrect) folder to Stephen_new, and changed the old (correct) one to Stephen. - this was as instructed to by http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107854.
I also copied the whole library folder from the home > Stephen > library to the home > library folder, as instructed on step 3 on this website http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/renamehomerecovery.html (i presumed by 'home > library > library they meant home > Stephen > library). This gave me back my bookmarks and stuff.
however, in the home folder there was only library and desktop. now, when i add something to a folder (say movies) through mac hd > users > stephen > movies (or the shortcut on the left of finder) it creates a new movies folder in the home directory, and copies the file there too. i.e. the file is in 2 places.
also on the left of finder the icons for movies etc. have all gone back to blue folder icons.
so basically the problem is before if i wanted to go to documents it would be right in my home folder, but now i have to go mac hd > users > Stephen > documents to get there, or i could make a shortcut on the left of finder.
i'm not sure how to tell which users folder i'm actually using, Stephen or Stephen_new. I'm guessing it's Stephen as new files seem to save there.
i would guess that i need to change my users folder to the name of my home folder icon, but you can't have 2 things the same name in the same folder.
i created a topic at appleinsider.com's forums, which no one replied to. maybe some of the info there could help you figure it out
    http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?t=71584
thank you very much for any help you can give me. if anything is unclear please ask me to explain further.
    ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    hello again,
i didn't really dare to delete the blue home folders before, just in case everything went wrong, but now i think i have so little space that i can't afford to lose 2.25gb!
one thing that slightly worries me is the fact that the 'proper' library folder (in the home icon) is 2.09gb, whereas the 'wrong' one (from the blue folder forenamesurname) is 2.24gb - this is the one i would be deleting. just seems odd to delete a larger file than the one i presume i'm using.
"Move everything you want to keep out of the blue folders, and then place both of the folders on your desktop. If everything works properly after a few days, delete both folders. If you are asked for your administrator password at any point or if either folder is copied instead of moved when dragged, don't delete that folder."
by 'everything you want to keep', does this include the library folder? 'cause there doesn't seem to be much else, and i'm not sure if deleting the library folder would ruin all my preferences.
i've put both of the folders on the desktop, it didn't ask for the admin password or try to copy them, so i guess that's good news. what kind of things should i be looking out for to act differently?
are the folders not in use now that they are on the desktop?
also if i put them in the trash will they have no effect? i.e. the same as permanently deleting them, so i could put them in the trash as a test.
    cheers, stephen.

  • Home Folder Disappeared – not renamed, FileVault issue?

When I log on to my MacBook I receive a message to say that it can't find my home folder - it's just not there in the Users folder.
I have not renamed my home folder - it's just not there anymore.
There is an Alias with the same name as my username (the icon looks like the .mac world icon), the original item that this points to cannot be found. The alias is owned by 'system' and I cannot take ownership, rename or delete it.
The other user of the system's home folder is fine, as is the 'Shared' folder.
There is another folder in Users called MyUserName 1 - this only contains Library/preferences/By Host.
I use FileVault and the last time my home folder was there it did a space clean up when I shut down.
I was not doing anything the last time I used the system that could have led to accidentally deleting the folder (just checked some mails).
Any help gratefully received - I do take backups, but had just uploaded some photos the day before that are not backed up anywhere - I would really like not to loose those!
I'm thinking that as FileVault keeps the contents of my hme folder in a separate virtual disk, the link to this has been lost, hence the Alias... but I have no idea how to resolve this.

    Sorted it... just about.
Found the FileVault file via another admin account and opened and copied it with the disk utility... just putting everything back together...

  • Home Folder can't accept files or folders starting with letters A through O

I've had my g4 powerbook for like 6 years. It has OSX 10.39, 800Mhz, 1GB RAM.
I only have 1 Home folder, my own, and I am the admin on the computer.
The most screwed up thing has happened lately. I can't add any new files or folders directly under Home IF they start with the letter A through O. Whenever I try to do this, it says "The Operation Could Not Be Completed. Unexpected Error Occurred (Error Code -51)."
For instance, while I was trying to figure out what was wrong, I moved the Movies and Music folders OUT of Home and now when I try to move them back again they won't go in. So now I can't use iTunes since every time I try to start it it says there must be a music folder under Home!
The other thing I have tried is renaming things in Terminal using the mv command but it doesn't work and it gives this error message: "Bad file descriptor"
What is wrong and how do I fix this because I am completely mystifiesd ... thanks for your help.

Does the DVD-R have a very long name? If so, see:
*Unable to copy or move files from volume that has a long name*
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2053
If this seems to be the problem you'd probably have to try burning a new DVD with a shorter name, since you can't rename the present DVD.

  • FileVault did not open home folder-- Can't login

Okay, so just today I upgraded to Leopard, after the CD finished downlaoding, I logged into my account, and the Updater wanted me to update to 10.5.1, so I did. Updater asked me to restart, and after clicking the restart button, FileVault (I have it enabled) asked me if I wanted to recover disk space (it does this all the time) I skipped the process, and my computer restarted. It brought me to the login screen, and I clicked on my account, entered my password, and then a window pops up, telling me:
"Your FileVault-protected home folder did not open and needs to be repaired.
Click OK to repair the folder and continue logging in.
Click Cancel Login to log in as a different user."
I chose okay, then waited a few hours to see if anything would happen. It didn't. This account is the only adminastrator account on this computer...
    Anyone know what to do??

Understand that what has happened is that your FileVaulted volume, which is simply a large, glorified encrypted sparsefile, has become corrupt and requires repair. The problem is getting access to it and performing the repair. Please understand that the following fix worked for me and may not work for you.
First, chances are you have only one user on your computer. Even if you have two, we should start fresh with a new admin user. The following steps will reset your Mac to think that is has just received a brand new setup of OSX:
    1. Reboot
    2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
    3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
    * mount -uw /
    * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    * shutdown -h now
Now, booting up your computer, enjoy the pretty light show, take a large breath, hold it for 10 seconds, then let it go. Grab a cup of coffee or a loved one and cuddle during this inspiring intro. Now, back to business. Setup your account as you would in any other circumstance. Just make sure you dont name your username the same as the one you used on this computer before. Make sure your password is longer than 8 characters as well (or so I have heard).
Now that you are inside your computer, you see that you still do not have access to your data. Lets take out the crowbar and proceed with the following steps:
    4. Go to Macintosh HD/Users/ and locate the folder named the PREVIOUS administrator's account name which you cannot access. Click on the folder and go to FILE | GET INFO and under Sharing and Permissions ADD yourself as a user with Read & Write privileges.
    5. Go inside this folder and perform the same command on the Username.sparseimage file as in step 4. Note the path of this file (i.e. /Users/UserName/UserName.sparseimage)
    6. Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/Terminal
    7. Type: sudo hdiutil attach /Users/username/username.sparseimage -nomount
    8. A bunch of funky things will happen, but it eventually should list a number of volumes, one with an HFS attached to it, note if it says disk1s1 or disk2s2 or whatever.
    9. Type: sudo fsck_hfs -f /dev/rdisk2s2 (rdisk2s2 being where the HFS was from step 8, adding an "r" at the front)
If fsck_hfs bails because of too many errors, just repeat until it says the FS is fine. That irks the bejeezus out of me as well, but has always worked for me so far.
    10. Type: sudo fsck_hfs -frd /dev/rdiskXsY
This will rebuild the catalog file, which was my problem.
Now, finally, go back to that path where you found your sparsimage file, double-click it, enter your password and you just may be able to read the data! Success!!!
If you are smart, like I am at this very second, back up the data immediately to DVD. Once you have your backups, reinstall everything and just drop your data back in. Make it clean!
Remember, FileVault is a bitchen feature! But if you are ignorant enough, like I was, not to back up your data, whose fault is that? Cheers!

  • Home folder access problem

    Hi,
I have a problem accessing my home folder in the sidebar of Finder and in general starting the Finder from the dock. If I click on the Finder icon in the dock nothing happens, if I click on my home folder in the Finder sidebar a popup message is asking me with which application I want to open my home folder!?. Obviously Finder forgot how to open my home folder.
Finder still opens a normal Finder window if I double click on an existing folder on the desktop but not via Finder menu bar or right mouse menu on the Finder icon. I can still access my home folder via terminal "/Volumes/myname" though. And in the Finder I can still see the content if I go to Macintosh HD -> Users -> myname and then do Show Package Content. It is just the link in the PLACES section of the Finder sidebar that doesn't work.
I have also tried dragging my home folder out of the Finder sidebar and putting it back via Preferences -> Sidebar -> PLACES -> select Home and by dragging it there from Macintosh HD -> Users -> myname
In Terminal I see that my home folder has read/write/execute rights for my user and none for group and others:
    drwx------ myname myname
I have not tried to rename or move my home folder! And I have tried restarting and checking and repairing Disk Permissions via Disk Utility.
The exact error message when trying to open my home folder from the sidebar now is: "The document "myhomefoldername" could not be opened!" But this only came after I picked an arbitrary application to open my home folder with since he kept on asking me which application to use. An obvious choice of course would have been to use Finder but that one doesn't show up as an application.
Any more ideas on how to fix this situation?
    Thanks a lot!
    Matthias

that's not the right place for your home folder.
though. And in the Finder I can still see the content if I go to Macintosh HD -> Users -> myname and then do Show Package Content.
really?! maybe that's the problem. it seems that your home folder has been converted to a package somehow. it should be a regular directory not a package. you can use setFile terminal command to remove the package bit from it so that it becomes a normal folder. You'll have to install Developer tools (they are on the leopard install DVD) to get setFile. alternatively, you can pull just the setFile command from the install DVd using [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com>. Once you've got setFile installed run this in terminal
    setfile -a -b ~

  • Question re. Column View/List View in Home Folder and Root Folder?

    <Edited by Host>
When I set either my Home folder in the Dock or the Root Folder on the Desktop to open in Column View, everything opened is retracted upon closing.
Is this just the way Leopard is, or am I missing something obvious I should know:
First, on Tiger, my Home Folder opens directly in the Finder. I don't have to select "Open in Finder," as I have to in Leopard.
Second, when I select the Column option when opening the Home Folder in the Finder, it automatically sets the Column option for the Root Folder on the Desktop, as well (and vice-versa). In Tiger, they can be set independently. I prefer to have the Root Folder set to List View and the Home Folder to Column View, and have both remain like that. This is what I meant, but got a bit confused before in asking the question.
Also, is there some way, as in Tiger, to have the Home Folder in the Dock set to open automatically in the Finder, without having to select that option each time I go to the Home Folder?
Actually, now that I remember, perhaps this isn't such surprising behavior. To get it there, I copied the Home Folder from its position in the Root Folder to the Dock. Maybe there is some other way to get the Home Folder into the Dock? Thanks.

    WZZZ wrote:
Thanks. The option "Open in Finder" appears at the bottom of a small vertical menu when I click on the Home Folder in the Dock. Command clicking on the Home Folder brings up the other user account, Shared, and my user account, so it's not that useful.
ah, you are right. well, one more option is to make an alias to the home folder, put it anywhere you want and put the alias on the dock. then clicking (no command-clicking needed) on the alias in the dock will open home in a finder window directly.
The default in Finder Preferences was already set the way you suggested.
Now that I know about cmd-n, that gets me directly to the Home Folder in the Finder. And now that it's set up to open in Column View, and remain that way independent of the View option for the Root folder, everything seems to be looking good. That's what I needed.

  • Lion Server - Home Folder Sync Not Working - HELP

I have a lion server set up on a mac mini.
I have set up an OD to manage network accounts through the server app.  My workflow for setting up users is:
    1.     using the server app add a new user
    2.     I have a home folders users directory set up under file sharing and set to be available for home directories - so I select this share as the home folder for the user
    3.     I user the WGM app to then set up mobiility through the preferences tab to create always and to sync the home and preferences
    4.     I check that the home folder is set correctly under the user account in WGM
When I log in to the client machine (regardless of whether or not I have first logged in on the server or not) the client presents an error saying that it can not log in and can not access the server at that time.  The client stays on the user login screen.
If I then change the users home folder on the server to local I can then log in on the client machine and create the account.  If I elect not to create the home folder on the client machine the rainbow ball of death occurs and the machine hangs.  So I instead log in and select to create the local home folder.
I then log out of the user and change the user setting on the server to point the home folder to the correct share instead of on the local setting.
I then log back on to the client machine and can log in without any problems.  HOwever, I get an error message if I try to sync saying that the home folder is not accessible.  This is despite the fact that the home folder, and the server et al, can be mounted in finder and I can copy and paste documents etc to and from the server.  I have full and expected access to the server and the associated storage.
For some reason home sync continues to say that the home folder can not be found (in fact that the server can not be found) whenever I try to sync.
This is driving me bananas.  I have tried so many permutations that I have lost count of the things that I have tried.
    Is this a permission issue?
I have the OD bound to the client machine and have no problems seeing the users and being able to access the OD from the client machine.
Does any one have any thoughts at the issues I should be looking at or which logs may be helpful in trying to understand what is going on?

    Jonathon.
The dscl command just leads to a "Data source (LAPDv3.server.tnichapman.private) is not valid" statement.
I logged on using my local client admin account.

  • Home folder lost - user account restored to default

I installed SL last weekend, no major problems but many annoying bugs. This morning when I woke up the computer had hung - screen saver was frozen. I held down the power key to shutdown. Turned the computer back on, clicked on my user account icon, and it was like I'd just picked up a new computer... my home folder had been replaced with a "straight out of the box" home folder. Standard desktop, standard dock, nothing in my documents folder, standard library. My entire home folder is gone.
All apps are still available - they are on a different partition with the OS.
The partition where my home folder lives is now virtually empty. I used stellar pheonix to try to recover the files from my home folder, but it did not find them as lost not as deleted files. It gave me the option of recovering about 40GB of deleted files, but they were legitimately deleted files.
I have repaired the disk - no problems. Any suggestions would be appreciated...

After Dubaidan and tcnsdca I am the third person in this thread who has experienced this 'wipe home directory' bug. I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard last week. By accident I clicked on the 'guest login' icon on my MBP thirty minutes ago. After about 1 minute it automatically returned to the login screen, without showing up the guest desktop, so I decided to click on the 'guest login' again. This went pretty smooth and when I logged out the message appeared that all the 'guest login data' wouldn't be saved, but returned to normal.
When logging in to my regular account everything was gone. I don't use filevault. Nothing has been renamed to something else. My home-directory still exists under /Users/username but it is just empty.
Apple should have noticed this bug report already. It doesn't feel right that Apple doesn't take immediate measures when someone reports such a bug with a high potential data loss.
I would suggest to everyone to disable the guest login option IMMEDIATELY until Apple has addressed this. I hope that Apple will come up with a swift response and a nice gesture to victims of this bug.

  • "Fire-vault protected home folder did not open and needs to be repaired."

I recently updated my macbook to leopard and after my laptop downloaded system updates, it had to restart but when I came to the login section and tried to login, I get this message:
"Fire-vault protected home folder did not open and needs to be repaired. Click OK to repair the folder and continue logging in. Click Cancel login to log in as a different user."
I don't have a different user so I clicked OK, but then I get this message:
"You are unable to log in to the user account "Kyle" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occured."
So now I can't login and I'm a college student and need important files on my computer. Someone please help! I have class tomorrow!

Sorry, I re-read your question and realize from the title you had file vault on upgraded and now it won't let you into the home folder. This is a known issue and I hope Apple produce a fix. I encountered this problem but fortunately I took a bootable image backup to a firewire drive. I booted off that as root and then opened the sparese image which is the home folder. This gave warnings but let me copy important documents to safety and also export address book and safari book marks.
If you do not have a backup I am very sorry to say you may have lost those files. It is worth backing up important college work, even if it is just to CD. I hope Apple come up with a fix for this because many of us hit this problem. Part of the reason for owning a Mac is you do not expect to have these issues. It made me feel like I had just installed XP!

  • Change Admin Acct - Home Folder Short Name

    Hi Folks,
I'm a new MAC user and I accidentally "fat-fingered" the short name of the administrator's home folder during initial configuration of my machine. I think I remember seeing that the short name of the adminstrator's home folder can't be changed.
Is there a workaround that will allow me to change the short name of the administrator's home folder?
I don't want to have to look at this grossly-mispelled folder name for the next umpteen years.
    Thanks much for any help.
