Home folder Creation problem solved (for me anyway)

I have had an issue where when I asked my server to create home folders it was not making them. I also tried all the usual things like removing the share, sudo createhomedir -a and even ran the combo updater on the server again all to no avail. Upon looking at another server that was creating home folders I found that when I selected Network in the Finder SideBar there was an alias of Servers. This alias on the working server showed an alias of the server HD and in turn showed the contents of that drive. On the server that was not working the Servers alias in Network was an alias of a white document and showed nothing.
What i had to do to fix this was to open Terminal and su to root, cd /automount, rm Servers and restart. When this was done going to Network in the sidebar and selecting Servers then showed an alias of my server HD which in turn showed the contents of the drive. I then used WGM to remove the network mount for home dir's and stopped sharing the folder. I then re-enabled the share and then set the home dir mount again. After this it succesfully created the home folders in that dir when asked to and I was then able to log in and manage the account.
I hope this is of some use to others...
regards Gary.

  • Home Folder Creation w/Active Directory

If this has been asked a million times, just point me to the url for the answer...
I have done the leg work and have the "magic triangle" working - I can login and auth to AD and get my preferences from OD. I want our user's home folders to reside on our Windows server. I have shared out \\server\students on the Windows server and in AD I am pointing their home folder to our Windows server, but I can't get the permissions right. When I point a new user's home folder in AD to our Windows server, it creates the folder \\server\students\jtest.
When the user logs in, none of the subfolders are created. Can someone give me some pointers on how permissions need to be set so the subfolders are created on first login?
This is all pretty new and I'm happy that I got the triangle to work - if I can get this all important piece, I'll be set.
    Thx in advance!

    Hi
A lot of this depends on how many OUs you have; how deep they go; and how many directories you have nested in each OU or the particular OU the directory for home folder creation is within. The accepted 'recommendation' is not more than 3 deep - generally. Having said that I have made it work with OUs 7-10 deep. Gets trickier after that.
In my experience the non-creation of expected directories is generally down to permissions not being assigned properly - as you've guessed. Essentially users must be given read/write access all the way down the nested directories. I have seen permissions assigned correctly to a parent folder, with a set of different permissions applied to the next folder down and the next one along again with the correct permissions applied. Folder creation fails when permissions are set in this way.
What is interesting is the log-in does not fail though you are greeted with the usual "the home folder exists on an SMB or AFP Server etc" dialog box when getting to the desktop. You sometimes get this at the log-in window as well. Although you can also see the message for other reasons - usually down to poor DNS configuration.
You should be able to log in as the local admin and look at the system.log in Console. You should see an error starting with 'NSurl etc etc. . . ' listed. If you do that's an indication it's a permissions problem.
Beyond this and without being there it's difficult to tell?
    Hope this helps, Tony

  • Installation problems solved for XP SP2 systems.

I've been pulling my hair for days trying to install SC2, but had no luck.
The installation process DOES have a bug. Use the following tactic in addition to disabling any firewalls and virus programs:
Right-click on the installer file and select 'Compatibility' . Click 'Run this program in compatibility mode:'. Finally, simply select Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5) mode.
Problem solved for now. Hope this helps.

This is very interesting akian ty - I will definitely try this at the weekend. I can install and run on a laptop with XP SP2 - and it had previous versions installed on it. However on the desktop PC I have not been able to install.
My problems have been with opening ports and appserver not starting. I will post back here how I get on with your tip. Thanks and also for the other suggestions that people have tried to help me with.

  • Home folder permissions problem in Lion

Well, there are 2 problems really, but I'm hoping that curing one will cure the other. I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro both running Lion. I can connect to the iMac from the MBP using afp but trying to connect to the MBP I get a "connection refused' warning which seems to be affecting a number of Lion users. My home folder is not shared so I can't solve the problem by unsharing it as some have. (If I turn off afp, smb works ok.)
What I have noticed though is that the permissions for the public folder and home folder on the MBP seem to be incorrect. They are:
    username - read & write
    unknown user - read only
    everyone - read only
whereas on the iMac they are:
    username - read & write
    staff- read only
    everyone - read only
How do I correct the permissions for my MacBook Pro's home folder? I'm hoping that this will also solve the file sharing issues.

Too bad this solution is hard to find... Let's mark it as solved so others can find it easily.
Glad it saved you a clean install!

  • Home folder access problem

    Hi,
I have a problem accessing my home folder in the sidebar of Finder and in general starting the Finder from the dock. If I click on the Finder icon in the dock nothing happens, if I click on my home folder in the Finder sidebar a popup message is asking me with which application I want to open my home folder!?. Obviously Finder forgot how to open my home folder.
Finder still opens a normal Finder window if I double click on an existing folder on the desktop but not via Finder menu bar or right mouse menu on the Finder icon. I can still access my home folder via terminal "/Volumes/myname" though. And in the Finder I can still see the content if I go to Macintosh HD -> Users -> myname and then do Show Package Content. It is just the link in the PLACES section of the Finder sidebar that doesn't work.
I have also tried dragging my home folder out of the Finder sidebar and putting it back via Preferences -> Sidebar -> PLACES -> select Home and by dragging it there from Macintosh HD -> Users -> myname
In Terminal I see that my home folder has read/write/execute rights for my user and none for group and others:
    drwx------ myname myname
I have not tried to rename or move my home folder! And I have tried restarting and checking and repairing Disk Permissions via Disk Utility.
The exact error message when trying to open my home folder from the sidebar now is: "The document "myhomefoldername" could not be opened!" But this only came after I picked an arbitrary application to open my home folder with since he kept on asking me which application to use. An obvious choice of course would have been to use Finder but that one doesn't show up as an application.
Any more ideas on how to fix this situation?
    Thanks a lot!

that's not the right place for your home folder.
though. And in the Finder I can still see the content if I go to Macintosh HD -> Users -> myname and then do Show Package Content.
really?! maybe that's the problem. it seems that your home folder has been converted to a package somehow. it should be a regular directory not a package. you can use setFile terminal command to remove the package bit from it so that it becomes a normal folder. You'll have to install Developer tools (they are on the leopard install DVD) to get setFile. alternatively, you can pull just the setFile command from the install DVd using [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com>. Once you've got setFile installed run this in terminal
    setfile -a -b ~

In Yahoo Answers, someone posted that it could be a sign of some type of malicious software
<sigh> someone's always eager to raise that specter, huh?
WebCT is a common educational software tool used by numerous schools and colleges to run courses over an internet connection. Did you, by any chance, enrolled in any school classes around the time this file appeared?
Of course, to some people, schools are malicious, but that doesn't mean to say this file is.

  • Artwork Problems Solved (for me and hopefully for you)

Ok so for all you having problems with your artwork going missing on your devices I pretty much just hit the nail on the head!! Not sure if I was the first to mention this or notice it but after hours and hours of scratching my head I found it out.
The problem occurs when you are transferring music to your device and its being converted to a lower bit rate.
If your music is already at 128kbps in your music library and you have the option ticked to "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128kbps" Then it will copy the artwork across. Obviously if you have this option ticked and the song starts off at a higher bit rate the album artwrok is not copy with the songs.
Which then also means that if this option is not ticked and you copy your music onto your device at what ever bit rate its in your library as, whether it be 160, 256 or what ever it will carry the artwork across!
    Hope this helps!

Sorry for the typos by the way, type too quickly!
    Cheers

  • Folder Creation problem

    Hello
I'm developing a java class that creates a folder in oracle files. The folder is created but i cannot uoload any files into the new folder. even in the oracle files browser interface the "upload file" button and the "create new folder" button appear disabled. i really don't know why this is happening. here is my code:

                   Folder pub = (Folder)po[2];
                   Folder f = pIfsFS.createFolder("meitner3", pub, false, null);
    Hope someone helps
    thanks in advanced
    Vitor

    Vitor,
You SHOULD NEVER EVER use the CM SDK Java API with Oracle Files. Oracle Files has a layer between itself and the underlying CM SDK technology stack that provides common functionality among its protocol servers. Directly bypassing this (unexposed) layer will lead to all types of problems.
Build yourself a WebDAV client, or try and script FTP. Just do not use the CM SDK API.
Should you wish to perform a bulk migration from an existing system - we maybe able to help.
    thanks,
    Matt.

  • No. 1 problem solver for many issues: restart device

After trying lots of things to get my iTunes Match songs back on my iPad, I found that simply restarting the device resolved the issue.
Most support documents don't mention "restarting your device" as a troubleshooting option.
This works for many devices, including any computer, router, phone, etc.
    Alternative troubleshooting options:
    - Restart iTunes Match in the iPad / iPhone Settings
    - Re-login or re-enter your password
Any suggestions to add to this list are welcome!

  • _pageflow folder creation problems with generated build.xml

I currently have a Workshop project with a web app that builds my ear file just fine. But the problem is, when I export the build.xml file from the project and try to run it with ant, it doesn't generate the _pageflow folders that I would expect.  Consequently, it doesn't get packaged in and causes errors when I deploy it.  The funny thing is that if I generate the ear file from Workshop, it builds, deploys, and runs just fine.
Anybody encountered this before? Does anyone know how the pageflow folders get built?  I narrowed it down the to build.xml <apt> task which seems to be one responsible for creating the pageflow folders. It also seems to be looking for jar file references in the .factorypath file, but I don't quite know which ones I'm supposed to use.
    Any help?

    No help from anyone?

  • A3 Conversion problems SOLVED for the moment.

When I first launched A3 and began the conversion process, I ran into the same problems as others here. All 8 processors on my Mac Pro were maxed out. Other apps ran glacially slow. And the conversion process simply stalled with no progress having been made after 12 hours.
Before I began the A3 conversion, I had updated my Vault.
Last night, I deleted the in-conversion library, and made a duplicate of my Vault for safety. I then rebooted my Mac Pro in 64-bit mode pressing 6 and 4 at boot.
I launched A3, turned off Faces (for the moment) and created a new library in the original location. A3 will not directly open or convert the A2 vaults so my vault had to be imported.
A3 has now been importing and converting my A2 vault for 12 hours and it's making good progress. All of the masters and projects have been imported. A3 is now half way through processing (upgrading) the 30,000 masters (basically a mix of Canon 6Mp and 10Mp RAW images) in my library. The processors almost never max out and the computer is responsive.
    So far, so good.
    Cheers.

Using A2, I was able to successfully restore my library from the A2 vault. I took care not to use any of the tools within A2 just in case programming conflicts existed due to having both A2 and A3 installed.
After the restore had completed, I quit A2, copied the A2 library to its normal location, and then launched A3 using the Option key to allow me to specify which library to open.
A3 offered to upgrade the library, and I agreed, also allowing it to upgrade all photos to A3 standards.
Note. I had Faces turned off at the time.
    The library upgrade proceeded flawlessly.
Once completed, I browsed my library. There were still a few green Mark III previews, and my Mark III images were still being processed using the A2 processor.
I then deleted the old A2 vault, and created a new one from A3 to replace it. A3 has just finished backing up my library to the new vault.
(Note. At all times during this procedure, I've had at least 3 copies of my library including the one in use by A3. If you lose a digital photo, *it's gone*. Don't take risks.)
My next step will be to select all of the photos and reprocess them using the A3 Processor ( *not recommended* if you're a professional photographer who makes money from their photos and has spent hundreds of hours adjusting and perfecting your photos for your clients. Do your own testing before deciding whether to reprocess).
I'll then update the vault before proceeding to turn on Faces. If the Faces process corrupts the library, I'll be able to restore from the vault.
    Recommendations
Boot in 64-bit mode if you can, anytime before launching A3.
Back up your A2 library to a vault.
Relaunch A2 holding the command-option keys, and repair the library. If you have time, consider rebuilding the library (although that option might not have been available in A2).
Launch A3 holding the option key down.
When given the option, create a new library. This will give you the opportunity to do:
    Turn off Faces in Preferences.
From the File menu, choose Switch to Library and choose your A2 library.
    Continue...
    Bugs
Previews are sometimes not updated correctly. A forced Generate Preview is required.
My A3 vault turned yellow after making a few adjustments to my images. When I clicked to update the vault, I was shown the same warning dialog that others have reported:
    Aperture Update Vault error text:
    *Not Enough Disk Space*
The vault "Aperture Vault" does not have enough space to hold your library.
17179869169.15 GB is needed, but only 82.38 GB is available.
    *Final Recommendation*
If you're a professional photographer, wait for the update before upgrading to A3 :–)
    Cheers all.
