Home folder empty, can't login, complicated one--asking for experts

My home folder is empty and when I log in to my username I just get the blue pattern screen and it never progresses.
I posted this to the PB forum also because I'm not sure what caused this... It's complicated.
OK, for starters... Latest OSX, 1.25gh with 2 gigs Crucial ram. Filevault turned on. Lately there has been a little bit of strangeness from the laptop... more spinning wheels than normal, more delays. SMART status always said verified. Yesterday ran hardware check off the laptop install disk and everything checked out.
I occasionally use a G-Raid Firewire 400/800 CardBus adapter that often freezes up the laptop and causes a forced restart. I think I had it in at the time that i was doing a backup to an external drive with SuperDuper. It did cause a freeze a little bit earlier. On first backup try I got an error due to having too much data on my drive to be cloned by SuperDuper, so I trashed several gigs of photos I didn't need on my PB HD anymore (the photos had been in the HD area, not my encrypted home folder). It should have freed up enough space to successfully clone but I still got the SuperDuper error that said in the log that there wasn't enough free space. So I figured I'd restart. Ever since then, I haven't been able to get past the login on either my main drive or the clone. Ran DiskWarrior, repaired permissions, and repair disk off disk utility to no avail. However, I can log in to two other usernames (my wife's an a guest username). My user folder appears to be empty.
Luckily, I have a third clone on a pocket HD for such an occasion on the road, but it's a bit dated so I'd rather get my current user folder back if possible.
Help??? Anyone???

Before doing anything below, I reccomend you try this. In your wife's account, open up your old users folder. Choose File>Get Info. Where it says size, if the size is over a couple hundred megabytes, then all of your data is still there. If it just says a couple of KB, post here. I think your data is gone. Continue if it says something over a couple hundred MB or any amount of GB.
I noticed David Yonder's reply in the PB forum. What he was saying actually makes a lot of sense. Here is what I reccomend. Log into your wife's account. Open up system preferences. Go to Accounts, "Click the lock to make changes," select your account, not your wife's, and click "-" (delete) at the bottom. Click okay at the prompt. Create a new Administrator account with the same name as your old one. Then, open up /Users/Deleted Users/yourusername.sparseimage You should have all of your old files back. Create a new adiministrator account for yourself. Make a new folder on the root level of your hard drive. Name it "Backup." Copy all of the recovered files into that folder and login to your new account. Open up the backup file as well as your new users folder and drag all of the recovered files into their respective folders. That should do it. If it doesn't work, post again. Happy fixing!

junked old macbook for a new one. changed apple id password from a different mac. i want to login and it asks for name and password. no matter what i type i cant seem to login. why cant i just enter my apple id and password. or is there a way to change whatever name and password are on the new one from another mac so i can login. anything helps...thanks

Just open System Preferences>Users & Groups and unlock the preference pane with your root password.
Set the New Account to be an Administrator and fill in the rest of the data and then click "Create User".
I would suggest using this user to be YOU with admin capabilities. I wouldn't use the root user - too much damage could occur if you're not sure what you're doing. If you have files, etc., that you want to move to this account, simply but them in the Shared folder - or if you 'rescued' some old files and the like from your 'trashed' MBP, you can put them in your NEW admin account folders.
Hope I've explained myself well - call back with any questions!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
iTunes and iCloud and different accounts, you will need to delete both accounts from your device before adding the new details in their place.
For iCloud go to settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit the delete button. You can then sign back in using your correct details. For iTunes go to settings >store, tap your account ID and then sign out, you can then sign back in using your correct Apple ID.

  • Can I use only one computer for driver development?

Hi! I'm newbie in driver development and now is first day when I make the acquaintance of driver development. There is the next phrase in MSDN in
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/hh706187(v=vs.85).aspx
: "For developing, debugging, and installing a kernel-mode driver, you need two computers". But I unfortunately have only one computer and I have to develop the USB Kernel Mode driver as technical assignment for admission to the job.
My computer is under Windows 7 OS and already has standard USB driver. I have Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate and WDK 8.1 Update on my computer. Can I use only one computer for driver development and debugging or not?

no, not really, you need two. you can use a VM as the machine under test though.

My credit card expire. I can't login to Adobe Connect for add my new credit card for payments. What can I do?

    Oh dear...
You must be accessing the iTunes Store in the U.S. You can't buy an iTunes card in your country (i need to know this), so try making a new account with the payment option as a Visa Credit Card. Have you bought that Pre-paid Visa credit card yet and loaded money on it? If you haven't, you will probably have to.

  • [SOLVED] Home folder full & can't figure out why (MBs not matching up)

/home (as a partition) is 5GB and completely full... however, XFE, emelfm2, and PCManFM all see the home "folder" as being between 1.3GB and 1.8GB full... I am under the impression that I have a ghost file SOMEWHERE that even root can't properly detect, as it's not making any sense.  What tools can I use to figure out why my /home partition is full?
Note: XFE, when checking the properties of the home partition vs home folder, it also shows the partition as full and the contents of the folder as 1.5GB or so.  I can't shut down the computer, as I'm transferring large files from one flash drive to another (and my /tmp is on another partition and is 1% full out of 3.8GB. The comand 'df' returns that the partition is full as well... all tools, whether accessed via root or user, are telling me contradicting things: partition full, folder 40%(ish) and it's driving me mad!  Any and all help is, and will be, GREATLY appreciated!
    SOLUTION:
installed ncdu from repos, used command 'ncdu /home' and found which folder was the culprit... I had a large transfer going overnight that wasn't going when I got back in the morning, so the disk wasn't at 100% when I got back (not sure why any space was taken up by the transfer since the tmp folder is NOT in /home and the transfer wasn't to or from /home, but that may be an issue for another day).

trash was empty, lost+found could be a possibility... what is ncdu?
    EDIT:
figured out what ncdu is, can't believe I'd never seen this program before!!! will be using it to track down the issue tomorrow! THANKS!!!

  • Can't Login to One Site with a Virtual Keyboard

I am unable to login to one particular site using Firefox 10.0.2 in Lubuntu 11.10.
The virtual keyboard is visible but does not react at all.
I can login OK to several (all) other sites with similar virtual keyboards using the same FF in Lubuntu.
I can login to the problem site OK using Chromium in the same Lubuntu session.
I can login to the problem site OK using Firefox 8.0.1 in XP on the same PC.
So I suppose there must be some setting in FF10.0.2 which is obstructing the virtual keyboard - but which?
I have been unable to find anything to fix or diagnose this problem so far.
    Thanks for any help!

I found I can also login OK to the problem site on the same PC, using Ubuntu 10.04LTS & FF 10.0.1.
So I am just missing some magic ingredient to allow me to login to my site using my normal Lubuntu 11.10 & FF 10.0.2.
Is this a java issue or what, when virtual keyboards don't respond?
Can nobody point me to anything which might help me to understand/diagnose/fix this problem?
    Thanks!

  • Can multiple users share one file for iphoto

I want to be able to have all the user profiles on our iMac access the same files for iPhoto, so when one user adds photos they are there for anyone who logs on.

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
