Home folder grayed out in Mavericks.

After the Mavericks upgrade, the folders in my home folder are grayed out in my favorites panel. All other folders are fine. How can I get direct acces back to the home folder?

OK, sorted. Deleted the Finder preferences and relaunched.

  • How to fix permission denied for home folder with Apache in Mavericks?

I recently activated the apache that ships with OS X Mavericks. I followed some tutorial to set up the web-server, however. When I browse to my home-filter at http://localhost/~nazeem, I get the following error: You don't have permission to access /~nazeem/ on this server.
    Installation steps
To set up the webserver, I took the following steps:
    1. activated the webserver with command: apachectl start
    2. enabled PHP by checking if the module is loaded
    3. checked if the home folder module is loaded
    4. made the user based configuration file, in /etc/apache2/users/nazeem.conf The content is as follows:
    <Directory "/Users/nazeem/Development/Websites/">
Options Indexes MultiViews FollowSymLinks AllowOverride All
    </Directory>
    Permissions
    ~/nazeem : drwxr-xr-x+ ~/nazeem/Development : drwxr-xr-x ~/nazeem/Development/Websites : drwxr-xr-x
    Log
The apache log says the following:
[Mon May 19 21:22:57 2014] [error] [client ::1] client denied by server configuration: /Users/nazeem/Sites
In my opinion this is remarkable, as the path /Users/nazeem/Sites is nog what I defined in my user configuration.
    Versions
    OS X Mavericks 10.9.3
    Apache 2.2.26
Does anybody know how to solve this?

You will have to contact the author of that tutorial and ask. Apache can be configured an infinite number of ways. You seem to be attempting to configure it in two conflicting methods. You can define specific directories on your web server or you can use mod_userdir. You can't hack up a combination of the two.
I posted my own User Tip on how to configure Apache: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3083
This user tip only covers mod_userdir and will serve content out of $(HOME)/Sites. I strongly suggest starting there and only trying a custom location later, if you see the need.

  • Home Folder greyed out/Can't access home folder

I'm completely unable to view my home folder after a fresh install of mountain lion.  I copied my user folder over and created a new user based on that folder.  As you can see it will only show me the large home icon instead of my column view.  It is able to be accessed from other views however... it's not consistent.  There seems to be a huge finder issue with this user.  I've also made a test user and everything over there works fine so it's only on this side.
Here is what it looks like from the other user:
Still greyed out... I've tried everything from help from genii at the store to friends who know UNIX well, I've reset ACLs and repaired permissions ot no avail.  If you have any ideas for me please lemme know and I'll try them.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Mailbox folder grayed out - lost mail!

One of my mailbox folders showed up gray this morning. All of the other mailbox folders are working fine. Just this one (essential) one is inaccessible.
Any suggestions on how to reaccess that information. When I try to click and drag to that account, it won't accept the message. If I use the "move to" function on the menu bar, and message appears to be transferred, but is unfindable.
    Thanks for any help.

In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. With that folder open, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post, to let me see the names of the files and folders present at the root level of the Mail folder.
Before actually posting that information, you may edit it so that the file/folder names do not reveal any details you wish to keep private, e.g. you may replace any real username with "username" to hide your real email address if you wish; similarly, you may disguise any domain names you don't want to be revealed. Try to be consistent in how you disguise those details, though, as we may need to refer to them in subsequent posts.
Now, go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. With that folder open, repeat the process to let me see the names of the files and folders it contains. Again, you may disguise any mailbox names you wish to keep private. Be careful to not alter any suffixes, though.
Do you see in ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/ a file or folder named after the mailbox that has the problem?
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

  • In Finder Go menu, Home Folder is grayed out although visible in Sidebars. Why?!

Recently downloaded Yosemite.  In Finder Go menu, Home is grayed out. Home is visible in sidebars and I can access my folders within Home folder but not in Go menu or by Cnt + Shift + H or via Command + Shift + Go. I tried sudo chflags nohidden in Terminal to no avail. (Also tried it /Home. I don't know for sure whether things changed with Yosemite but I have the problem now.  (Also, using Utilities to repair permissions, there were many re printer and some others; not sure whether any had negative effect.)  Any thoughts?  THANKS!

Oh for goodness sakes Mark!   The light bulb just flashed!!!  hahaha
Thank you so very, very much.  Now I understand.  I am so not tekkie savvy & don't understand the lingo just yet.
Lucky I posted the link to the video, so that you could highlight were I was going wrong and thank you
for taking the time to look at it to help me out.  BLESS YOU FOR BEING YOU!
Now, if you don't mind, perhaps you could solve the problem that made me think to change the media player in the first place.
I upgraded to ML and for some reason I had real problems viewing the youtube videos.  And then I had problems with online movie streaming.
A real long story made short.  I got rid of Perian bcos it's not ML friendly.  And VLC, bcos Quicktime is suppose to do the job. (Or so I have read.)
I uninstalled & re-installed Adobe Reader & Flash, Flip4Mac, Quicktime Player (I uninstalled the X version, thinking it was the problem & stuck with the simple version).
The only extension I have now is the Ad Blocker.
So why do the youtube videos take forever to buffer, then always stall & won't continue playing.  The online movie  streaming works great now.  But not the youtube videos.
Any suggestions?  Should I reinstall the VLC, will that help?

  • My default home page does not come up and my navigation bar is grayed out. I can't seem to fix it.

In the last few days, I have noticed that when I open my browser, I don't get my default home page, even though it shows under my options. When I conduct a search, I have navigation buttons, but once I open a page from the search engine results page, I have no navigation anymore. They are all grayed out.

This can be caused by a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Flashing Folder with Question Mark, Disk Utility Grayed Out

I was working on my macbook pro when it appeared to freeze, so I manually shut it down by pressing the power button. When I pressed it again to restart the computer, the restart "chime" sounded, and a flashing folder with a question mark appeared shortly after. The folder flashes for a few minutes, and the macbook turns off again. After consulting the internet, I restarted while holding command+r, and the computer told me to reconnect to the internet, select a language, and so on. When I reached the menu giving me choices for how to recover my information, I discovered that there were apparently no time machine backups recognized and when I tried to use the "first aid" option in Disk Utility, all of the action buttons are grayed out when I select the drives (I'm running OS X Mavericks) at the left, including the "Verify" option at the top. Is there anything I can do? I really would rather not restore a new version of OS X to preserve my information.

Thanks for the response. When I clicked on the option to reinstall, the window asking me to select the disk where I would like to install Mac OS X presents no options. There's just a blank white box with no other messages or prompts.

  • Iphoto still grayed out after iphoto upgrade after mavericks install, what should I do?

After upgrading to mavericks Iphoto was Grayed out. The computer Notified me that I would have to upgrade iphoto from 9.2.1 to to latest version.
went to the mac app store, the upgrade page showed the iphoto upgrade, it downloaded and installed the upgrade but iphoto is still grayed out in the dock and in the applications folder. The mac app store shows the iphoto upgrade as being installed. whot should I do?

First, make sure the new copy of iPhoto was not installed as a separate icon in your Applications folder.
If that's not the case, try launching it anyway; I've seen instances where the icon fails to update until the associated application is launched for the first time.

  • OSX Mavericks won't boot after changing user home folder

    Hi guys,
I have a clean install of Mavericks on my macbook pro 17" and have two drives in. One is hdd (in place of superdrive) and the other is ssd where OSX is installed.
    I have uset the following:
If you right-click on the User in the Users & Groups system preferences, choose "Advanced Options..."
You can then change the location of the home folder
to change location of my user home folder and set it up to be on the hdd but now OSX Mavericks won't boot. I get the progress bar on boot and it just freezes no matter how long I left it.
    Can anyone help me out?
    Thanks!

I managed to boot after dozen tries and restored the location of the home folder to where it was at the first place.
The thing is, on my second drive I have the whole user folder with data, settings and everything else in it and would really like to use it in the Mavericks.
I guess I could just copy it over the one in the Mavericks and it should be good?
Not sure, why this is the issue now since on previous OSX releases this home folder changing thing worked without problems :/
If anyone else have the solution for this problem please do feel free to let me know!
    Thanks!

  • [SOLVED] Home folder full & can't figure out why (MBs not matching up)

/home (as a partition) is 5GB and completely full... however, XFE, emelfm2, and PCManFM all see the home "folder" as being between 1.3GB and 1.8GB full... I am under the impression that I have a ghost file SOMEWHERE that even root can't properly detect, as it's not making any sense.  What tools can I use to figure out why my /home partition is full?
Note: XFE, when checking the properties of the home partition vs home folder, it also shows the partition as full and the contents of the folder as 1.5GB or so.  I can't shut down the computer, as I'm transferring large files from one flash drive to another (and my /tmp is on another partition and is 1% full out of 3.8GB. The comand 'df' returns that the partition is full as well... all tools, whether accessed via root or user, are telling me contradicting things: partition full, folder 40%(ish) and it's driving me mad!  Any and all help is, and will be, GREATLY appreciated!
    SOLUTION:
installed ncdu from repos, used command 'ncdu /home' and found which folder was the culprit... I had a large transfer going overnight that wasn't going when I got back in the morning, so the disk wasn't at 100% when I got back (not sure why any space was taken up by the transfer since the tmp folder is NOT in /home and the transfer wasn't to or from /home, but that may be an issue for another day).

trash was empty, lost+found could be a possibility... what is ncdu?
    EDIT:
figured out what ncdu is, can't believe I'd never seen this program before!!! will be using it to track down the issue tomorrow! THANKS!!!

  • In photoshop elements 12 I try to delete a folder but the delete option is grayed out. how can I delete a folder from my catalogue?

how can I delete folders from photoshop elements 12. the option to delete is grayed out an I don't know what the alternative options are

Got it fixed!  The Folder was set to Open With Terminal!
Maybe when you moved it over from your other system, the Open With got changed?  To change this, in your Finder, select the iPhoto library from your User/Pictures folder and do a Get Info on it Command+I.
Then change the Open With to iPhoto application!
Then from the Finder, double click the iPhoto Folder and it will be opened with iPhoto!  WALLA it worked!

Greetings.  I'm following the steps in the following link from Adobe:

Folders per se cannot be imported - only pictures (or movies) in a folder can. So, you have to select a folder containing at least one picture or movie (all pictures and movies found are automatically selected when the import dialog opens). This is probably not the case for the folder you want to add, so "no photos found" is displayed in the dialog center and the "Import" button is greyed out.
