Home folder local path

I have entered a valid path like C:\ss in Home folder local path field. But i don't see any such folder or drive when i logon using client.
Can anyone state the difference between home folder local path and connect to fields?

Hi,
When the home drive is set on a user account via Active Directory Users and Computers the tool actually goes out and creates the home drive in ready for the user to map the next time the log onto a computer.

  • "Home folder" -- "Local path" in GPO

    Hello,
is there any chance to configure the "Local path" (in "Home Folder" under the tab "Profile") with an empty value of an Active Directory user object.
Until now, I haven't found anythink to configure it that way via GPO:
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi,
It seems this policy settings is available from Server 2012 alone :(. Check the below URL for more details.

  • Autherntication using Open Directory and NO home folder

We are looking to set up an Open Directory on a Snow Leopard server in our medium sized company - we would like to use it for Single Sign On authentication but do not want to create home folders on the server. All we want OD to do is authenticate
We have been able to authenticate using OD bound and unbound but both need home folders. Is there a way to have no home holder and still authenticate?
    thanks

What I did was in WGM select a user account. Then select the Home tab. Click the + button to add a home folder. In the sheet that drops down, in the bottom box put /Users/username. Leave the other boxes blank. This will create a home folder locally on whatever machine the user logs into.

  • Is there a way to merge/migrate my local home folder to a network account

My family has a number of Macbooks and a couple of iMacs and we've been thinking we'd like centralized storage for our media collection and other files and I'd like an easier way to deal with these machines to keep them updated, etc.  Also we swap laptops and desktops depending on who needs to do what at a particular moment.  Is there a way to migrate an existing home folder on a macbook to an account on the server.  What I would like to be able to do is to be able to log into any computer in my home and have it look like "my" computer, with files, settings etc...  Since I am new to the server world I am confused by the terminology re: network accounts and mobile accounts.  Is there a good guide someone could recommend to get me started.  Thanks.

    Hi Yodalogger,
I hope you have yourself sorted.  I've been through alot of pain with lion server, it's very buggy at best.
Your best bet is SolidWood's suggestion of network accounts if you are constantly on the same network.  I use this at home and it works very well.  For simplicity, you can use WorkGroup Manager for this as it's more intuitive!
If, you need a mobile account, this is what I did.
I migrated local macbook accounts to server machine (migration assistant).
I renamed the /User home folders on macbook to _backup.  For safety.
I deleted local accounts from macbook.  Keep your _backup home folders!  Also, you will need to have a local Admin account in place.  Make sure you do not delete it.
On Server.  You will have local accounts created for all your migrated macbook accounts.  Just remove the accounts in system preferences but ensure you leave the /User home folders in place when prompted.
On server. I created the new users (old mackbook accounts) and groups in the server app.  This doesn't create or overwrite your existing home folders.  So go ahead and name them exactly the same as before and make sure the accounts match your home folder's names.
On server, using profile manager, I set up mobility etc., for the device.  That is, you need to enroll your macbook with the server and configure services for it in profile manager.  You can add a placeholder for this in profile manager to configure stuff.
A handy tip to alleviate all the automatic push settings pain and heartache is to set the general payload to manual.  You can then wip up the profile manager from your macbook to install the profiles manually.  (easily done).
On Macbook, login with local admin account.
On Macbook, go to system prefs and accounts, set up your open directory stuff in the login options.
On Macbook, log out of admin.  Back at the login screen, you should see your admin account and 'Other.'  Give it a few minutes or so to figure this out.  It needs to contact the server etc. for info.
Once you have 'Other' click on it and login with one of your new network accounts.  This will log you in as a network account - you should see all your usual settings that previously existed on your macbook when it was a local account.
At this point, you whip up profile manager.  http://yourserver.local/profilemanager  Change yourserver to the name of your server.
Login to profile manager with your admin account.  I do this as I will be downloading a few profiles that only admin has access to.
So, you need to download a trust profile, your device profile, and a profile for remote management if you have set this up.  You may have seen various download buttons knocking around the the interface.  In downloads double click these to install (if it doesn't do this automatically).
    Log out of everything.
Log back in with one of your network accounts.  This time you should be prompted to create a mobile account.  Say yes and let it sync your home folders from server to macbook.
Once each mobile account is created, you can then further define user/group settings in profile manager.  You download these by logging into http://yourserver.local/mydevices as the user and download the appropriate settings.
I think thats it.  Sorry, if its not detailed enough - I'm presuming you know yourself around a mac!  I have to say the process is straightforward but Lion Server is not.  I do not get consistent results with it and I'm still trying to tame it...
By far the easiest option is network accounts.  Mobile accounts need more attention.
I hope this helps (and anybody else!)
    Paul.

  • Sharing sites in home folder beyond 'local subnet'

Essentially I would like to make my computer a web server. But, I can't get past the local subnet option in the Sharing Preferences.
How do I set up my web sharing preferences so sites in my home sites folder be visible by anyone?

    933 MHZ Quicksilver   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hey Michael.
this CAN be done, but I'd need more info before I can help you.
Generally speaking, when you connect to the internet(either dial up or modem) you computer as an IP address. If you use dial up, that IP address most likely changes everytime you dial in. If you have DSL or Cable, your IP address may change every few days or so. Just be aware that your IP address is the location of your computer on the internet.
But basically speaking, if you don't have a router, and you know your IP address, then they correct URL is this:
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/~username/ where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of your computer, and ~username is obviously your user name(be sure to include the "~", or it won't work.
This will allow access to your Sites folder in your home folder.
    Now a list of exceptions:
    1. your computer must be connected directly to the internet.. no router
    2. your ISP doesn't block Port 80, which is the port web services are hosted on. (most home ISP's DO block port 80, to cut down on the upstream data flow)
There are ways around both of those exceptions... but you'd need to tell me more about how your computer is connected to the internet before I can tell you exactly how to get it to work.
Now as to the subnet, that shouldn't make any difference. Generally speaking you won't be able to enter the URL isted above on the computer that is hosting your web site and have it appear.

  • Sync my local folders to the network home folder?

HI, I use the Workgroup manager to create a new user and then under the "Home" tab to create a "HOme" for that new user.   When I save a file onto that new user's local desktop; I want that new files to be copied to the user's home folder's desktop.  How can I do that?
When I logon the Macbook with the new user's logon, I can see the home folders (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Library, Movies, Musics, ...etc) there on the server with a "no access red sign" and just no automatically sync to those folders.   What do I miss out here?
Can anyone help?  I want the users to be able to sync all the files from their Macbook to their home folders on the Xserve once they shutdown.

So you are saying that on the server you see red circles on the folders on the server right?
That would be correct because the local admin on the server does not have access to them. That is how it is susposed to work. If you would like to have access to those folders you can add the local admin to the ACL of the users folder and then propigate it down to the rest of the folders. You can do that in server admin.
You will then be able to see if the data is getting to the folders on the server.

  • How to get folder(directory path only not file path) from local file system

    Hi Firends,
How to get folder(directory path only not file path) from local file system , whenevr i will click on browse button.
Please give reply for this one , if anybody knows.
    Thanks,
    Anderson.

    Hi Anderson,
if you're using flash.filesystem.FileReference - then it is run in black box - except of filename, size and creation data (and few other properties available after some operation succeeded). This is part of security features in Flash runtime (described in header section):
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/net/FileReference .html
This for example implies that user can download a content to local machine - but that content cannot be loaded back into Flash runtime. For this you would need either Air runtime flash.filesystem.File:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/filesystem/File.h tml
(so you would created Air runtime based application: desktop or mobile but not web, even as standalone project) or you would need one of 3rd party tools that add file access/file information features to standard Flash runtime applications converted to standalone native applications.
    hth,
    kind regards,

  • PHD force resync local home folder

A mobile user connected to my OD-master had problems with Mail.app, it continued freezing, even when logging out and in. So I decided to log in as local administrator on the iMac she was working on and deleted her account through system preferences > accounts. I also deleted her home folder.
Now when she logs in it keeps asking for "ubd" password and it can't sync any more.I tried to do a complete reinstall of the iMac but that doesn't solve the problem either.
The "sync home now" option is greyed out, what can I do to solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance!
PS. I used to use the Mobility settings of WGM earlier, but I read that it is better to use the Mobility settings of Profile Manager. I get the feeling it uses both now, is it possible to reset these settings for all users?

have you tried to use softlink to redirect all the requests to other partition?

  • The DFS Replication service stopped replication on the folder with the following local path: C:\Windows\SYSVOL\domain

    Hi,
i am facing the problem SVSVOL folder replication, i also checked dcdiag and result is DFSRevent fail .
in event log i found the event Error:
The DFS Replication service stopped replication on the folder with the following local path: C:\Windows\SYSVOL\domain. This server has been disconnected from other partners for 173 days, which is longer than the time allowed by the MaxOfflineTimeInDays parameter
(61). DFS Replication considers the data in this folder to be stale, and this server will not replicate the folder until this error is corrected.
To resume replication of this folder, use the DFS Management snap-in to remove this server from the replication group, and then add it back to the group. This causes the server to perform an initial synchronization task, which replaces the stale data with fresh
data from other members of the replication group.
    Additional Information:

  • Local Network User with Local Only or Services Only Home Folder Setting

    Hi all,
According to the OS X Server Advanced Administration Guide, under the "Choose a user’s home folder location" section, "If you choose Local Only, the user won’t have a home folder on the server and can’t log in using the account information stored on the server."  However, when I create a Local Network User account with a "Local Only" home folder, Server.app creates a home folder in that user's name in the User's directory of the Server itself.  According to the documentation that shouldn't happen, right?
The documentation gives no mention to the "None - Services Only" setting for the Home Folder.  I will only be giving users access to DNS, File Sharing, NetInstall, Software Update and Profile Manager.  I believe all I need are "Local Network User" accounts.  However, the documentation confuses me on whether the Home Folder setting should be set to "Local Only" or "None - Services Only".  Can someone clarify this for me?
    Many Thanks!

The idea is that a local home folder will get created, but the home folder will not be available to the outside world via services (e.g. Portable Home Directory). I don't believe anything in the services you provided requires a home folder. So, you should be able to get by with "None - Services Only".

  • Making Network home folder into a local one

I am trying to take someone's home folder that's currently on our OSX server and move it to their local machine. Reason being is that this person is always at the same computer and it's a little slower when they're using the server based folder (plus it has annoying quirks).
I thought the easiest way was to just copy the home folder from the server onto the local machine. It all seemed to work fine, however I can't seem to get it to "forget" the network home folder location. For instance, Safari still saves all downloaded files to the old network home folder instead of the local desktop.
How can I get it to forget about the old networked home folder? I tried changing the password of the server account but it still seems to be able to mount the share hosting the networked home folders.
Otherwise, can anyone suggest a better way to move a network home folder to a local machine? I'm going to do it for a couple of others soon and any suggestions would be great! I saw a great post about how to move local to network and that's what I'm going to do in that case, but the other way around seems to be elusive.
    Thanks.

Hmm, I don't quite understand. I guess my main question is, how do I erase all memory of the home folder that was based on the server for this account? Is it a matter of deleting preferences, or caches, or something else?
As I copied everything straight over it obviously remembers where the server home folder is and keeps defaulting to that desktop instead of the local one. I guess I could just delete the server home folder and that would force it to the new spot but it could cause other problems. Hmm.

  • What is proper path syntax for home folder for users

I'm taking over for someone who has left the organization.
They have used two methods for setting up a home folder for each AD user. I think they did this because over time they learned some things and just changed the way they did things. I'm not sure, but I'm trying to understand which is best to use going forward.
We use 2003 - and 2008R2 environment for AD.
We have a folder on our server called D:\userfiles
In this folder we have each department with a folder eg.
    D:\userfiles\hr
    D:\userfiles\accting
    D:\userfiles\department1
    etc.
When we set up a User in AD we click on the Profile tab and then select H: as the "Home Folder" and then in the To box enter one of two paths.
My question is which path is best. They both seem to work.
The one with the $ at the end I think creates a share in the shared folder when you look at shared folders in the computer management on the server for that user.
Anyway I'm not really sure which to use or what the difference is.   I would like to use one or other.
We also have a script that is run when people log on but I'm unclear if that is just   a red herring in this discussion.
    Thanks.

    Hi stevwolf,
Based on my understanding, you would like to know what the mean of the dollar sign($) at the end of the share name. Right?
The share name which has the dollar sign($) at the end means it is a hiden share. Hidden shares are not listed when you look through the shares on a computer or use the
net view command. In your case, the folder joebleow$ will not be liated in the path
    \\server1.

  • Audio CD not readable with network home folder, but is readable locally

When users log into a client machine with a network home folder and put in an audio CD, they get an error "Disk Insertion The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
The problem doesn't exist with data CDs, and when logging into the machine locally, the audio CD works fine.
I've tried creating new users on 2 different servers (one has 10.3.9 and the other has 10.4.6), but the problem still exists.
I've tried multiple client machines and the problem exists on all but one of them. All the clients are running 10.4.5. I tried updating one of the affected clients to 10.4.6, but no luck.
I can't figure out what the setting is on the one client machine that works so I can duplicate it for the others. I'm also confused, though, that if a disk can be read when logged in locally why it wouldn't also work over the network.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Troy,
    Welcome to the forums.
Just a guess... are your network users, groups or computers managed with WorkGroup Manager?
If so take a look at the settings for user (or group or computer) under WorkGroup Manager > Preferences pane > Media Access.

  • Path between Home folder & iPhoto & iTunes software is gone: can't access.

It appears I accidentally obliterated my Home folder, and in so doing, iPhoto & iTunes can no longer access my photos & playlists, although all the files appear intact in the directories --even though I recreated the Home folder with the same user name. (I am the sole user/administrator.)
Would appreciate any advice regarding restoring function.
    Thanks,
    Karin

    Hi, Terence,
    Thanks for responding!
Yes, in fact everything in my Home folder appears affected.
I am not very practiced at backing up & had not done so in a while. I thought I could back up my entire home folder (including iTunes & iPhoto) by dragging the Home folder icon into another Finder window with my LaCie external as the destination, cause usually when I do this with other folders the original remains & the file gets copied. There was a whooshing sound & the folder disappeared entirely from both originating & destination windows... (Also my LaCie said it did not have sufficient space.)
I then may have compounded the error when I found out in a Mac OSX manual that Go-to-Folder, Shift, control, H would show my Home folder. When it in fact reappeared this way, I tried to use it to access iPhoto with no success (including a zipped version of an earlier backup to the same hard drive). In between all this I rebooted at least twice....
All the sub folders/files in question seem to be intact (I have files of rolls, originals, modified, etc, to say nothing of the songs - which are not as great a concern cause I have most of them on CDs) - just no way to open them in the respective applications
After reading some of the other posts, I downloaded Library Manager & my current plan is to backup to DVD all my individual rolls & then somehow try to rebuild the library, but from what I read, I will lose all my "albums" etc.
If you have any better advice, your help is much appreciated.

  • Time machine backing up encrypted home folder

My macbook pro is required to be encrypted using file vault
I want to have some backup capability so I connected our older model time capsule (500 GB circa 2008) to my laptop with an ethernet cable.
Based on checking with the finder, my home directory is about 58 GB and everything else on the Mac HD was not selected for backup. When I run time machine, it begins backing up WHILE I AM LOGGED INTO MY ACCOUNT. It takes all day to do a backup. If I log out, there is no message from time machine about backing up my home directory. When I log in andit does a scheduled backup the next day, it looks like it tries to do another complete backup of 58 GB, rather than an incremental backup. I gather that this is because the sparse bundle disk image of my home directory acts like one big file. This behavior is different than has been explained in the forums. Is my home directory actually being backed up while I'm logged in?
This backup strategy is probably not the best for me but is better than nothing. I have about 9 GB of space available on my idisk and was wondering: Can I backup certain home directory folders to idisk as a way to do more of an incremental backup of more frequently used files? Or will this be a problem due to the encryption. Any suggestions?

Yes, I've excluded nearly everything else. Pretty much everything I use is in my Home Folder of 58 GB.
The excluded stuff includes Library 15.7 GB, OSX Files/Apps 17 GB.
Not excluded is Apps 9 GB, 6 GB movies, and my User folder
Yes I am looking at the Time machine message saying Backing up x GB of 58.1 GB
I see the recovering disk space message when logging out but not the backing up message.
If I go to Time machine, I can see all my files when navigating either from my home directory or from the hard disk and the sparse bundle doesn't show up
If I log in as admin, I could see the sparse bundle
Here is the console so far for a backup I started yesterday (now 1143 am Fri) at 31 of 58 GB). I downloaded the widget but did not want to mess with the admin stuff
