Home Folder on external firewire drive

I copied my home folder to my external firewire drive and used the Advanced Settings in Accounts to redirect the Volume path to the location of my new home folder.
All worked well for about a week and then for some reason the path to the home folder was renamed and was una ble to be accessed at login. I had to reinstall SL and then redirected the Home folder path back to the external drive. All worked OK for about a day and then the same issue arose.
It looks like SL is renaming the volume from "/Volumes/WD 4TB/minimac" to "/Volumes/WD 4TB 1/minimac".
Basically it is adding a 1 after the WD 4TB
When I try to edit the path in the Advanced Options in Accounts it still is unable to find the original volume.
To date the only way I can fix it is to do a clean install of SL and redirect the home folder to the external drive.
Any suggestion to stop the volme changing name?

drive name changing usually happens when an external drive is not unmounted cleanly or if an application tries to write to that drive when it's not there. then a phantom drive is often created. in finder go to go menu->go to folder and in the resulting popup enter /Volumes
this will open /Volumes in a finder window. that folder contains mount points for all your drives. they look like aliases. there may also be a phantom drive with the name of the external which looks like a regular folder.
this phantom drive is the problem. when finder tries to mount the external and sees that there is already something by that name in /volumes it adds 1 to the name of the mount point of the external to differentiate it from the already existing item.
delete the folder for the phantom drive form /volumes and remount the external. it will mount without 1 at the end. of course this might happen again in the future and you might have to repeat the procedure. as I said, the main reason why this happens is when a drive is not unmounted properly.

Moving User Home Folder to External Drive

I'm using 10.3.6 and over a year ago (maybe 2) I found a trick (in a magazine and on the web in a few places) to move my user folder to an external firewire drive. I haven't been able to find it since. In a fit of New Year's cleaning I accidentally disconnected the firewire drive while the system was running. Upon restart the system had created a new user folder for me back on the startup drive. All my files are still in the user folder on the FWHD.
I looked in the NetInfo Manager and it shows my home property as being on the external drive with the correct path. I also deleted the property and re-added it thinking that might make it take a look again. Nope.
I've deleted/renamed the newly created file. But it just creates a new one.
I've learned the barest amount about symbolic links and done
ln -s /Volumes/Titian/Users/rothrock /Users
in the terminal. I've combined that with renaming/deleting the existing one, as well as either just a logout and login or restart.
I'm at my wits end and would really like to be able to have all my files and settings back the way I used to.
First question does anybody know how to do the equivelent of "blessing" a user folder?
If not, how can I set up a new user that has its home folder on the external HD and then just copy all the files back over? (My start up drive is way too small and I need the space.)
Sorry for the cross-post, but I'm thinking the Unix folks might not visit the other sections too often.

I tried this, but the first command sudo ditto etc. should copy the existing user directory (on my startup drive) to the external drive, right? But it doesn't do that. So I'm a bit confused.

Blue screen of death when La Cie external firewire drive connected

I tested a LaCie external firewire drive on my iMac and it worked fine. I packed it up well and posted it to a friend who gets the blue screen of death when the LaCie is connected to her iMac. She's not even trying to boot from it.
My iMac is 9.1 and hers is 8.1. We are both running Snow Leopard. Was there some problem once upon a time with chipsets or am I mis-remembering?

Create an ISO (Encore) or folder on your hard drive (Encore or Premiere Elements) and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc for DVD or BluRay (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
Imgburn will read the ACTUAL disc brand from the disc, which is not always the same as the box label (Memorex is notorious for buying "anything" and putting it inside a Memorex box)
When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the SLOWEST possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help

Is it possible to boot a G4 (pci graphics) from an external firewire drive?

I have a Lacie 250 gig bootable external firewire drive which is recognized on my Power PC G4 400 but I cannot get it to boot from this drive. The procedure works fine on my ibook... I looked into a possible firmware update but the apple site says no update is necessary for the G4 400/pci graphics...
Any suggestions?

There sure are some radically contradictory posts here! (This isn't typical, at least in this section of the Discussions, RMx2.)
Can anyone who has posted here (or might join in here) actually boot from a hard drive connected via USB? I just tested this with OS X and I can't. For some time now, the Discussions have been riddled with posts, whether 100% accurate or inaccurate, that Macs don't boot from USB drives, despite the seemingly conflicting info in the article that Don kindly referenced. (John Huber: Don't eat your words just yet, John!)
Here's my personal experience, for what it's worth... I have a rev.2 B&W G3 which recognizes, reads, and writes to drives via USB, but refuses to boot from them (I tested with OS X 10.3 and 10.4). I also have a QS 2002 G4 that yields the same results. The QS G4 will, however, boot from these drives via FW. I used a WiebeTech ComboDock for testing this with both USB and FW. I tested with two different hard drives, both of which are known to have stable, working versions of OS X on them.
My G3 running OS X 10.3.9 sees the USB-connected drives in the Startup Disk Preference Pane, but when I click to Restart after selecting the USB system folder there, I get a beachball (haven't seen that in awhile...) and have to Force Quit System Preferences. Console tells me that that it could not get open firmware information or set open firmware information, and that it can't touch or set System/Library/CoreServices/BootX, returning Error 1 running bless.
On the QS running Tiger, the USB OSs don't even appear in the Startup Disk Pane of Sys Prefs. I can see the USB drive(s) using the Startup Manager, but selecting them and restarting results in a hung startup to a spinning cog with a prohibitory sign on the screen...
I haven't tried playing around with open firmware NVRAM settings (and don't intend to, except perhaps for trying an NVRAM reset), nor have I attempted to boot to OS 9, reset the startup disk there, and attempt the boot again to the USB device in OS X and in OS 9, which I may try later on when I have a bit of time...

Trouble with installing 10.5 from an external firewire drive

I have a family pack of 10.5 and installed it just fine on my macbook. But, I'm having trouble getting my imac DVD player to read the DVD. It just spins and spits it out, and spins and spits it out. The imac is not covered under applecare so spending money to get the DVD drive fixed (which I barely use) is not something I want to do right now.
Anyway, I followed instructions on a this website to install 10.5 from an external firewire drive. (http://iuseapple.com/blog/apple-how-to/advanced-os-x/2007/10/29/how-to-install-l eopard-from-external-firewire-hard-drive/)
But I get stuck and am not able to actually get my imac to boot from the installer. Basically, I am able to use disk utility to create a copy of the disk image on my macbook. That resulting file ends in ".cdr" and it mounts when I double click it.
And I partitioned my firewire hard drive without problems.
I think I'm messing up when it comes to doing the restore. If I try to drag the .dmg mounted file in to the "source" it doesn't work (is greyed out). If I try to drag the mounted .dmg there than it works, but I get an error when I click "restore" (something about scans and images not being found). I tried physically copying the .dmg file onto the partition, but then when I plugged the HD into my imac, I wasn't able to get the imac to boot from the installer.
What am I doing wrong? If someone could walk me through these last steps I'd appreciate it!

Okay I finally got around to creating the bootable disk image of 10.5 using Carbon Copy Cloner. Still my iMac is not booting from the firewire drive!
Here's a recap of everything I've tried. I'm at a complete loss now!
- I partitioned the HD into 2 partitions-- a 10gig one for the 10.5 install, the then the rest for Time Machine. I make the partition in Disk Utility on my MacBook.
- I've partitioned the drive a few times-- always partitioning it in APM format (b/c it needs to boot my non-intel iMac).
- I've created the disk image using "restore" in disk utility. I've again tried this a few times.
- I am able to boot my MacBook from the disk image I create! So I know the FW drive is able to be used to boot from!
- Here's what I've tried in terms of getting the iMac to boot from the FW drive. It always just boots to my internal drive instead. Sometimes I briefly see a folder and question mark. I've tried all 3 FW ports. I've selected the install partition at start up in preferences. I've also held down the option key at start up (only my internal drive shows) and I've held down command-option-shift-delete and again I get the question mark and it boots to my internal drive.
- And I installed Carbon Copy Cloner and made the disk image that way on my macbook. Still, I tried everything and the iMac is not able to boot from the firewire drive!
Since my DVD drive is broken, this is the only way for me to install 10.5! Help!

Moved User Home Folder to External - What to do with iTunes settings?

I used these instructions to move my User Home Folder off Mac hard drive and onto an external hard drive http://mac.tutsplus.com/tutorials/os-x/relocate-your-home-folder-to-another-driv e-or-volume. Do I need to go into advanced settings of iTunes and change the location to the external or do I just keep the location the same as before the move via these instructions?

Installing on External Firewire Drive

Hi-
My Mac has started doing some funny things recently; I cant connect any USB devices, MobileMe refuses to let me delete any items from my iCal and other little irritations.
I have an external 4Tb Firewire Drive which has loads of space on it free, so I want to do a complete re-install of OS X and boot from from the external drive. I can then reinstall my apps and stuff bit by bit and see what is causing the problems.
The question is: when I install the system onto the FW drive, will it erase what is already on there? I have some important work on it and don’t want to lose it! Does the installer need a ‘clean’ disc to install?

Disk utility's Restore function (and other copying apps such as CCC) will make a bootable installation of Snow Leopard on an external firewire drive that already contains data. Just remember not to check the erase disk option for the firewire drive.
It's most convenient if you first collect all your user material on the firewire drive into one folder. And there is possibly a risk of something bad happening if some files in your user material have names identical to the names of files in the Snow Leopard installation. That may be unlikely. But you'll have to judge that.
If that worries you, before you do the Snow Leopard installation on your firewire drive, you can use disk utility to repartition your external drive without erasing any of its data. See this: http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1395749. With such a large firewire drive, a number of partitions would seem desirable.
Then you can install a bootable Snow Leopard on an empty partition of the firewire drive for which you do check the erase disk option. With that option checked, the copy is performed as a block by block copy. Otherwise it's performed as a file by file copy. The block by block copy goes faster and is supposed to be identical in all respects to the original. That's not so with the file by file copy -- though both provide equal functionality.
Your firewire drive should be partitioned GUID. You can use APM (and the copy will still be bootable) but you will not be able (I've read) to install Snow Leopard updates. You can't, alas, change the partitioning scheme without erasing your firewire drive.

What to set when capturing to an external firewire drive?

When capturing to an external firewire drive that will also be used to edit the video, what do I need to set in the Scratch Disk window? Just the scratch disk? Do I need to also set the waveform cache? thumbnail cache? autosave vault?

Depends on your overall configuration/workflow...but I'll usually set my external for Video Capture/Video Render/Audio Render. Then both cache files to my system drive and my Autosave Vault to the external...unless I have an additional internal or second external. I keep my Project files on the system/startup drive.
When you click on the 'Set' button, it's best to simply select the root of whatever drive you want to use. This alleviates the possibility of uncontrolled heirarchy of 'scratch folders' cluttering up your system. If you select the root, then FCP creates a "Capture Scratch" folder at the root level, and each new project gets it's own folder within the main "Capture Scratch" folder.
Setting your autosave vault somewhere other than where your project file is located, can save your butt, if your system drive (or wherever your project file is located) decides to crash.
Others may do it differently, as I do on occasion...just depends on what drives/Mac I have available at the time.

Boot process hangs if external firewire drive disconnected.

I have an external firewire drive connected to my desktop at work. Time machine has been working well until someone disconnected the firewire drive. I didn't notice that it wasn't connected, but what I did notice was that the computer would hang at the grey screen during the boot process. Sometimes, I shut down the machine and then started it again, it would boot normally.
Then I noticed that the firewire drive was disconnected. Once I reconnected it, there were no longer any problems. I haven't seen any posts about this topic but I have heard from other folks at work that they have had the same experience.
So my real question is this: if I set up my MacBook Pro (which I carry back and forth to work on a daily basis) to have Time Machine back up to the Time Capsule at home, will the MacBook Pro be reluctant to boot when I'm not at home and Time Capsule is not available?

Application install onto external Firewire drive

I have an external firewire drive and was wondering why I cannot install some applications to this drive. I would like to do this to keep the main disk as free as possible.
Some apps don't seem to care where they are installed and some do, so there must be some way to do this. And this is place to get that answer!!

Oops. I meant Alias instead of link.
Create a directory on the external called Applications then select it and choose File -> Make Alias in the finder. Replace the Applications folder on your main drive with the alias you just created (this might require admin rights) and then the Applications directory will always reference the directory on the firewire drive.
You probably want to move the contents of the original Applications folder to the firewire drive before replacing it with the alias or you'll have to reinstall.

Storing Home Folder on a separate drive OK?

Can I store my Home Folder on a separate drive? I am thinking about getting a Raptor drive for my boot drive. But the size of the HD won't fit all my music, docs, movies and pics.
If this is OK, and it does not screw with the OS, how do I do it?
Copy to a new drive, but how do I direct the OS to that Home Folder and apps to save info there?

You can - you just have to make sure that you always have the external drive connected all the time, otherwise the system will create a blank home folder. It's probably not a great idea to do this for a portable computer. Instead, I'd recommend perhaps moving just your music, pictures and/or movies.

IMac 2.8Ghz + booting from external FireWire Drive

I was wondering if anyone has 'booted' from an external FireWire drive using the FireWire 400 port?
After going through the issue of reformatting my external drive with the GU-ID partitioning scheme, I found that the drive would mount on the FW400 port but wouldn't boot. In the end I used the FW800 port and the drive booted up first time. On my old PowerBook I could boot from both FW400 & FW800, does anyone know why FW400 doesn't work or is it my iMac?

If it mounts then you can install OSX or clone OSX and then boot from it. From what you are saying a bootable partition will boot on 400 just not on 800, which is quite odd, I concur.
Note that they are notorious for needing the right power supply and they all look identical - I had problems of recent with a triple extreme 1 TB on FW 800, and took it to LaCie (a mile from where I work) - they told me I was using the wrong power supply and gave me the right one free. When I got home I did have the right one in a pile with others. 4.2 A vs. 2.2 A and it worked great. And I have a spare free power supply.
I don't think drivers even enter into it at all with firewire, e.g. drive specific drivers.

Stupid question: force booting from external FireWire drive

My PowerBook is refusing to boot from it's hard drive (flashing ?/folder), which I'll be attempting to repair using DiskWarrior, etc.
But it's also not finding and booting from the OS X installed on my external FireWire drive (which it could do under normal circumstances). How do I force it to do that given that I'm unable to set the Start Up Volume in the normal manner?

Thanks for your response. I've been through the usual stuff as in your reference and I eventually got it to boot off the external HD by just leaving it long enough - it took maybe 10-15 minutes. I'm booted from it now. I hadn't thought of using the Startup Manager, but will try to remember next time.
As for the internal HD, it's looking like it's dead - neither Disk Warrior nor Data Rescue II seem to be able to see it. I tried Disk Utility from the external HD, but it doesn't see it and nor does the Profiler. Maybe it's just a loose connection internally. There is a noise coming from the PB from about just under the division between the left hand rest and the speaker. It sort of sounds like a disk continually being read or written - ie. a sort of very rapid clicking, but I don't think it's the HD. And I don't think it's the fan. Anyone with any ideas before I call AppleCare?
I did have a very similar problem a few weeks ago (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1465680#1465680), but Disk Warrior fixed it apparently with next to no problems. I was going to wipe the drive at the weekend & reinstall, but didn't get round to it in the end ... Fortunately I had a backup this time and was able to restore my user simply by copying it.

After restarting the machine, I got an alert that told me my 80Gb Maxtor external firewire drive wouldn't initialize. The only real option it gives me is to reformat, thus losing valuable data. That's a non-starter. I've tried restarting the machine with the new DVR unplugged, but I get the same result. I've zapped the Pram, thinking it was a dirty pram, but no go. I've reset the nvram to default, using the command line, but no luck. The odd thing is that applications (like iTunes) continue to access the music files stored on it. I need this drive. Seagate support has been worthless. Any ideas?
