Home Folders Not being Created Correctly

I'm having some sort of major issue with my directory and/or afp setup.
I'm trying to create new users and the home folder won't be created at all. If I change the permissions (give write access to the user's group) on the root of the share that hosts the home folders it will create one but it is mangled. The home folder only conatins a Library and Desktop Folder. Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public, and Sites are missing. Also the permissions on this newly created home are mangled being 700 instead of 755.
All Existing Users are functioning okay but creating new home folders is broken. It has been a while since I've needed to create new users. I'm worried it may be hard to isolate the cause and effect. I have done software updates 10.4.6 and now 10.4.7. Also I changed this machine to handle local DNS.
Any Ideas?

We also have this problem, and before I go and re-edit the home folder entries for each of our 600-odd users, I'd appreciate if you could confirm that this solution is going to work for me...
Troubleshooting another problem, we applied the x.4.6 update about the same time as the Network Mounts were turned off then a restart and turned back on again. A bad combination.
Faced with a Monday morning "None of the students can log in" crisis ("you are unable to log in to the user account "username" at this time..."), and thinking that the problem had been caused by my turning the network mounts off, I discovered that student mount points now show (in WM's Home tab) as "afp://10.224.96.2/Students" where they used to be "afp://mainserver.westlandhigh.school.nz/Students".
The easy fix to the problem (not knowing about artnum 303697 at that point) was to reassign the home folders to the 10.224.96.2 home. (when you don't know what to do, you do what you know how to do). This got the users happily working again, although there were all sorts of strange problems relating to disk quotas that some users had to work through.
a few days later the log entries about DNS were noted, artnum 303697 applied, and changeip fixed those things. hostname responds correctly as mainserver.westlandhigh.school.nz. Everything ran reasonably well for the next couple of months, although the AFP/CPU hogging problem mysteriously appeared...
x.4.7 seems to have solved the AFP/CPU hogging, but now we've discovered a problem creating home folders for new users.
Tim's fix on 3rd August shed some light... An interesting quirk of using Presets is that we still have a Student preset that puts the FQDN name in the home folders list. So we can leave the FQDN home folder selected, click Create Home Now, and on Save, the folder is created. But the student can't login: "you are unable to log in to..."
Change the mount point to the IP number, Save, and it almost works - the system tells the user they are already logged in to another computer... Selecting Allow simultaneous login from Advanced solves this problem, but leaves the system open for the student to attempt to log in twice, with the potential for havoc there. It's also not a wonderful work around as the other staff who sometimes enter new users are likely to miss one or more of the extra steps...
I guess that I'm going to have to turn Network Mounts off in Sharing, and then turn them on again to get the right set of mount points showing in Accounts/Home, and then work my way back through all the students and point them back to the FQDN mountpoint again?
Is it likely to be worth the pain? Will it cause some other problem to arise? Is there an easier way?

  • Inbox folders not being created from msf files

Last week, I noticed that my Inbox folder files weren't appearing in my profile. I posted a generalized question here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/996903
The response I received didn't help that much. The folder I created appeared on the remote mailbox as empty folders.
My mail account is synced via IMAP to a remote Zimbra mail client using STARTTLS. I can view my Inbox. The other folders in my Inbox account are not visible. I can send and recieve messages from my INBOX.
When I select "Manage folder Subscriptions" In the account options, I can see the folders. When I select them, and click the "Subscribe" button, nothing happens.
Inspecting my IMAP directory, I see the following structure:
    ~/.thunderbird/13zr0oo0.default/ImapMail/mail.<zimbra_account>.com:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 1238 May 2 10:38 Archives.msf

The msf files are created when I click the "Subscribe" button but subsequent Mail files containing the mail data are not (note that non-msf files exist only for "INBOX".)
Removing .msf files and restarting Thunderbird has no affect.

Is your question about files not being created, or because you cannot send and receive mail, or both?

  • User Home Directory not being created when "Create Home Now" button hit...

This is a cross post, since I was not sure where this should end up since it touches two pieces- Open Directory and User Management. Any help would be appreciated!
I am running OS X Server 10.5. All of my user accounts have been migrated over along with their home directories. Problem is that when creating new users and then assiging a home directory the system does not actually create the directory.
Currently all users are setup to have their home directory setup here:
afp://172.16.110.100/Users/'username'. The Users folder has been setup to automount, and all users that have folders can be accessed without issue.
The problem is when I create a new user, select the aft://172.16.110.100/Users option and then select "Create Home Now" button and save as it requests... it does not create the directories.
I have even tried to change the Home patch to make it local to see if it was an network issue, and used the /Users choice and it will not create the directory in that way either- both location go to the same place.
The system was obviously able to create the local admin account and directory admin account home folders without issue when the system was installed.
The permissions for the "Users" folder are as follow:
directory admin = Read and Write
    local admin= Read and Write
system user (root)= Read and Write
    admin group= Read Only
    everyone group= Read Only
The system is in production, so any kind of server resets need to be done after 5pm, so I have not been able to reset AFP service.
Currently the only services running are AFP, SMB and Open Directory.
All users have their entire home directories located on the server, and login over Directory Access on their clients, so all user accounts are stored on the server. No one is having issues accessing their files or logging in.
I just can not create new home directories when I create new accounts.

You do not have to be logged on as the root user to do this. Launch the terminal and type-
    sudo createhomedir -a
I run an XServe with Tiger server ( 10.4.11) and this has been the workaround I have been using.
    Good luck.

  • File names are not being created correctly!!

Problem I have, and it seems to be an issue with iTunes in Windows and not Mac or in Windows Media Player for that matter.
Anyway, the problem is that the files are not being written as they are displayed in the Album Data in iTunes itself. It just appears as though iTunes will create any length of file name it wants and not the one that you create??
The reason I have an issue with this, is because I am trying to create one large album directory on an external Hard Drive connected to my Router so that any machine I have on the network can access it from there as opposed to creating a directory on every single machine.
I have a tone of discs that I am loading up and just felt that having one large directory on a networked drive would be the best route to take.
The machines I will be using to access the files using iTunes is my Mac Mini and my Windows PC depending on what room I am in, and then probably a few other devices scattered around the house to make up a Media network.
Anyway, the issue is with the file names.
It just seems that Windows iTunes wants to create whatever file name size it pleases, where as Mac iTunes and Windows Media Player seem to create the files as listed in the Track List and Album File Data.
It would seem that Windows iTunes has a serious bug in it's File Structure Handling which is a pain in the proverbial.
Just to test this out, I created the same Album both in Windows and Mac and the Mac version had the full file name structure but the PC one doesn't, however, Windows Media Player created it exactly the same as Mac iTunes.
It definitely appears as though there is an issue with iTunes in Windows, because it creates other albums without a problem. It just seems to pick and choose as it pleases.
Anyone else get this or know if there is a way to fix it??

    Katrina S. wrote:
I'm not sure what you mean. Perhaps if you gave a specific example?
I put my CD's into iTunes so that they go in Album Format with the albums in seperate folders and the song names as they are retrieved from the internet, so that they are not songs all in one long Directory Listing. (Unless of course there is another way of using iTunes??)
When using iTunes on Mac or the Windows Media Player, all the songs are loaded onto the computer as they are written in the descriptions downloaded from the web.
    Example in Directory format:
    Artist Album Song Name
Queen - Innuendo - 08 These Are The Days Of Our Lives
This works fine in Mac iTunes or Windows Media Player. However, if I'm using iTunes in Windows, it may give me the following,
    Artist Album Song Name
Queen - Innuendo - 08 These Are The Days O
Now, that is just an example and not a song that is affected, but it gives you an idea of what happens. It appears to happen on any Album and File Name combinations, and only appears to happen when using iTunes in Windows. The much longer filename and album names seem to be far more affected and I think this is to do with Windows Naming structure, but it doesn't explain why it's not happening in Windows Media Player??
The problem with this, is that when trying to use the same File Directory stored on my external Networked HDD for both Apple and Windows iTunes, the Windows version is causing havoc by doing what it wants where as the Apple iTunes seems to work as intended.
So when it comes to using either to rip a new CD to the library, I have to start using the Mac Mini each time because it seems to not be causing any issues when ripping discs.
I'm still in the process of sorting out my Album Directory and having to load everything up on the iMac so that everything gets loaded properly, but this seems to be a really bad bug in iTunes.
The reason I want to use this external NAS HDD is to keep my data in one area as opposed to having two large directories for both machine formats.
I hope that is a little more clear on what is happening.
P.S. Just to add to this. I prefer to use the PC for CD Ripping because the CD Drive is much faster than my Mac Mini and doesn't get anywhere near as hot when used constantly. I can rip 20 albums or more on my PC in the time it takes to sometimes rip just 5 to 10 on my Mac Mini, which is why I wanted this to work properly on the Windows version of iTunes.

  • Home directories not being created

    Hi,
I am having trouble creating home directories for users on my OSX Server Tiger 10.4.4 running on a mac mini.
Home directoried do not seem to be created for users on my Open Directory.
I have configured my server to be an Open Directory master. I have no other Open Directory replicas/Servers running.
I have set up and configured DNS. It appearts to be working correctly and can resolve my server name to the local IP (10.1.1.X) and give me a fully qualified domain name.
When accessing users on my OpenDirectory via the work group manager the directory name comease up as "LDAPv3/127.0.0.1" (local host possibly the problem).
When I click on the "Create Home Now" button and hit save, the home dirs are not created.
I have checked to make sure that the home directory is shared (owner root) and it seems okay.
I have read some other threads on topics similar to this, but have had no luck. I would appreciate any help in trying to fix this problem.
Please let me know if any further information s required.
    Cheers

I had the same issues you've described in this thread. It turned out that I had named my server "morris", and when the client machines went to mount a user's home folder, they attempted to mount /Network/Servers/morris/Users/whoever. When I went to the Finder, I clicked on the Network icon, then the Servers icon, and listed under there was "morris.domain.com" (where domain.com is your own local domain), but not "morris". So it appeared that there was a name mismatch.
The fix was easy. I started up Server Admin, clicked the machine I wanted to fix, clicked the Settings tab in the right pane, the Network tab up top, and changed the "Computer Name:" field from "morris" to "morris.domain.com". From that point on, my login problems went away.
It seems that the Server Admin-set "Computer Name" has to match the machine's FQDN in DNS.

  • Time Stamp not being created correctly

    Afternoon,
Unfortunately, when writing a timestamp using GET TIME STAMP FIELD f the time contained with field f is one hour behind what it should be.
Also when we use the command CONVERT DATE d TIME t DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME dst INTO TIMESTAMP tst TIMEZONE tz  where sy-uzeit = t, sy-datum = d, sy-dayst = dst (X) and  sy-zonlo = GMTUK the time within tst is still one hour behind.
The system time is set to GMTUK as is my userID. This issue has arisen since the UK switched to daylight saving time last Sunday.
If anyone can provide an explanation as to why this is I would appreciate it.
    Thanks and regards
    John.

    Sudheer,
Thanks for pointing me in the direction of that blog. It provided to be very useful. When getting a time stamp the system always returns UTC (Universal Time Coordinated) and ignores if daylight saving time is in operation.
To convert a timestamp you use convert time stamp and use the time zone sy-zonlo to get the correct local time.
    Thanks and regards
    John.

I have a lot of grief with this version of Windows Media Player.
It is very buggy and frustrating to use.
I have my Music library on a QNAP NAS, which is as reliable as they come.
System notifications make it not save changes.  It also does not do a good job of interpreting albums and artists from folders.  Changes to track names are not saved, nor are tracks moved to other albums, renamed albums, changes to genre, artist
or date.  It separates and merges albums/tracks without sense or reason.  Some changes I've made up to 4 times, then closed WMP and re-started my machine to check if it has/hasn't saved the changes.  Often it has not.
This is the first time I've used WMP in this capacity, and I do not recommend it.
    New service pack please.

  • Tlanes not being created for all locations for one product

Hello Experts - I need some advice on the following situation:
We have a set of products where tlanes are only being created for 3 locations out of many.  What would cause the tlanes to not be generated for all locations if all master data elements are present?  We have a valid inforec, mrp views, etc.  I can't see anything different with the 3 locations that are working correctly.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Thank you for your resopnse:
To answer your questions, yes, we have done all of these things and the tlanes are still not being created.  We have been using SPP for 6 months and this is the first time we've seen this problem.  Do you have any other suggestions or is there any more information I can provide you that would be helpful in solving.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

  • User Profile Disk not being created

    Hi,
I created a new 2012 VDI collection. Things seems to be working fine except for the User Profile Disks are not being created. From my understanding a .vhdx prefixed with the user's SID is supposed to be created when the user logs into one of the virtual
machines from the collection. I can see that a UVHD-template.vhdx" was created correctly but when logging on to one of the deployed virtual machines from the pool there is no  other .vhdx files (except the template).
From what I've read the virtualization hosts must have write access to the share (they do).  I can't seem to find any other requirements. I've searched through event viewer and found nothing. I'm not sure which logs to check on which server.
Anyone have any ideas what I'm missing?

  • XMP files not being created with DNGs...

I'm used to using Bridge with ACR to process Nikon NEFs. But a recent camera update has me experimenting with converting the D3's NEFs to DNG files and editing them with CS2 and Bridge 1.04 which works better on my system. I've also experimented with CS3 and Bridge 2.1.1.9 with the same DNG files.
In both cases XMP files are not being created when working with DNG files. I have enabled "Save image settings in : Sidecar ".xmp" files" turned ON. But they do not seem to be generated and I assume the ACR adjustments are being embedded in the DNG file. Meanwhile doing edits on NEF files continues to create .xmp files as expected.
I find .xmp files to be very useful and I'm wondering why they're missing with DNG files? Are they hiding somewhere other than in the same folder that the images reside in?
    Thanks.
    Russell

    > The information contained in the XMP file is stored in the DNG file so there is no need for a separate file.
Aww, yuck!! That's a real drag...
When editing lots of files (yesterday's shoot produced 8GB) I back everything up to off-line storage and then, after doing all my edits and crops in ACR, I only have to copy over the small XMP files which takes no time at all.
So if I re-edit the DNG with ACR I have to re-copy ALL the files again to the off-line storage.
I used to sometimes even save 2 versions of the xmp files when I needed 2 different crops of the same images, such as doing a wide screen 'cinema' crop for a corporate client's Intranet presentation of their event, as well as more standard crops to be used for their newsletters.
Guess I won't be using DNG any more..
Thanks for the help Kees :-)
