Home Hub 3 absolutely refuses to port forward!

I'm not new to networking and know all that must be done to forward a port on a router, but the HH3 constantly tells me that any port I try to forward for any device on my network is in conflict with another device/port range/etc even though it will never let you set up a device/range to be forwarded in the first place for there to be any conflict with.
How can I get around this? Looking around it seems version A of the HH3 has this problem and I seem to have this version A.
How do I go about getting a new/working one sent?

People have been sucessful by using very short device names, and static IP adresses. Then mapping the application to the IP address of the device, and not its name.

  • Home Hub 5 - Impossible To Open Ports

    Greetings, I really hope someone will be able to help me out with this, and I will try and keep things relatively short.
    I have just had my new HH5 sent out to me as a result of not being able to use my own third party router with BT TV. Even as the customer service agent was explaining the features of the HH5 I knew I was going to encounter countless issues with opening ports for online gaming with my PC (thats why I had purchased my Netgear router), however as mentioned, the BT TV side of things has left me with no choice but to get the HH5.
    After setting up the HH5 with my BT Infinity everything works great, with just one setback, the port forwarding features do not actually open the ports even though I have created new rules within the HH5, as I still have moderate NAT when trying to play games online. I have tried every different method available to get the ports open but it simply is not happening.
    I have spoken tech support and received the usual responses of "we do not help with port forwarding" and "you need a PC expert to help you with this".
    So as a last resort I have signed up to the BT forum in the hopes of finding someone who may be able to help me get things setup with opening up the moderate NAT that just wil not go away. I know there are countless other threads with similar problems but from what I have seen none are related to the HH5.

    If you are not using the multicast channels, then your Netgear should work wit BT Vision, with a slight change.

  • FTP Port Forwarding

    I am trying to open port 21 to allow my me to use my network attached storage on FTP. This worked fine before I moved to BT but I know I now need to set up DDNS - however before I do that I have to check the port is open.
    I have found the TAB in the HUB manager that lets me do this and it has set the FTP option and recognised my storage unit as it is displaying the units MAC address.
    However, when I check with an application such as http://canyouseeme.org/ it says that port 21 is not open and in trying it has timed out.
    I can't really see what can be wrong - the BT HUB (brand new) says the port should be open, and the storage unit is powered and set up for FTP - the unit has been powered cycled and held its settings but obviously changed IP address, and still the port is not being reported as open.
    Any suggestions would be welccome as I need this working very soon.

    Provided that you are NOT using a home hub 3, then you need to assign the FTP application to the address of the storage unit. This will allow port 21 to pass through the home hub firewall.
    Protocol TCP
    Start port address 21
    End port address 21
    map to local port 21
    Trigger port (leave blank)
    There should already be a suitable pre-defined under the "games and applications" section.
    You will need to get a free DDNS account and host name from a suitable provider, like dyndns.org , and enter these details into the home hubs dynamic DNS settings.
    If you are using a home hub 3, I believe that port forwarding is not working at the moment.

  • Can only port forward port 80, other ports does not open.

    I am trying to open three ports on my AE (7.6.1), but the only port that actually opens (if set) is port 80.
    - The Airport Extreme is the router and no additional router is in place
    - I have given the three cameras (that I want to access from Internet) static IP
    - I have trired to open three ports for those (45101, 45102, 45103)
    None of above ports open, but if I change one port to 80, that port opens and one camera can work. This is really strange and any suggestions or help is much appreciated!

    As you don't want to use the modem as router I would recommend to reconfigure your modem into "bridge" mode. In bridge mode it works like a simple modem. You then have to configure your WRT for your internet connection (usually PPPoE for DSL or DHCP for cable). With this setup, you don't have these chained routers and the WRT has a direct connection into the internet (i.e. the WRT shows your public IP address on the Status page).
    Some chained router setups shows problems with drop outs, connection loss and similar. I recommend to use only one router in home setups.
    On a sidenote: port forwarding is not related to firewall functions. The reason why you need port forwarding is because a router does "NAT" (Network Address Translation). You use private IP addresses inside your LAN (e.g. 192.168.1.*). Private IP addresses are not routed into the internet. Any internet router will immediately drop packets with a private IP addresses. Thus, your router does NAT to map your private IP address to your single public IP address. It's in the nature of this mapping that unsolicited incoming traffic from the internet is dropped unless you configure port forwarding. That's simply because the router would not know where to sent a packet on a port 1234 received on its public IP address unless you tell it. Thus disabling the firewall on a router won't change a thing.

  • Flipping out home hub means i can no longer connec...

    This afternoon my home hub mutinied and refused to connect to the internet.
    I went online via an openzone nearby, downloaded the hub manager thingy and this told me I had to reste my password to get my hub to work I did this and connect to BB wirelessly via my home hub.
    BUT my iphone refuses to accet the new password.
    It will not accept the default password.
    I have tried making a new network as advised on other forums, still does not work.
    Resetting networks, does not work, changing the channell on the hub, nope.
    Turning everything off and back on again, nope.

  • Running Home Hub 3 as a modem? (bridged/connected ...

    Hey all.
    Looking to connect a Home Hub 3 to the WAN port of a Linksys WRT54GL and have it act as a modem only, (just pass an IP address along). With the 54GL doing all the managment of my network.
    Done it before with an O2 Thomson, but can't find much info full stop about the Home Hub 3 on google, so hoping someone might be able to help, or point me in the direction of some threads/guides?
    I know it would be easier to just buy a decent ADSL2+ router, but the Linksys is like a member of the family.

    Got nothing against the HH3, just prefer my Linksys running CF as is capable of so much more. Initally I ended up with the O2/Linksys setup years ago as a short term bodge due to lack of funds for the decent ADSL2+ router I needed, but worked so well it got left like it and still not feeling the benefit from Wireless N is enough to justify splashing out. Gigabit ethernet would be nice, but not like I stream HD content or have NAS, so better things to spend the monies on for now.
    Will have a google around on the HH2, would take a nudge in the right direction at this point, as seem to have forgotten everything I ever learned about routers lol. Cant even get Telnet access to the **bleep** thing! (swear filter fail)

  • VNC without access to set up port forwarding

    I just bought the VNC Viewer app for my iPhone 4 and got it to work over 3G and wifi with my macbook pro connected to my home network. I know very little about networking but I knew enough to be able to set up port forwarding to my ip on my router at home. The problem is that I am a student in college right now, so my computer will be hooked up to the schools network when winter break is over. I have no access to set anything up on the network at school, so how will I get this to work? I made a host name at no-ip (does that allow me to connect to my computer even when my ip changes?), and I read something about being able to set up an ssh tunnel to make it work...maybe? I now have no idea what to do and the other forums I've read about this topic are using language that I am not familiar with. I need some network education! Again, the problem is setting up my MacBook Pro to allow a VNC connection on a network I have no control over. Thanks!

    My suggestion is using TeamViewer.com (they have both a Mac and an iPhone app) and it is free for personal use.
    Team viewer has the ability to work across routers and corporate firewalls.
    The problem with ssh is that it also needs port forwarding the same as VNC. You could have your Mac at college ssh to a Mac at home, setting up a reverse tunnel (ssh -R). You then VNC to the Mac at home, and instead of attaching to a VNC server at home, you connect to the ssh tunnel listening for connections. You would have to always have the tunnel established from your college Mac to a home Mac (or it could be a Linux box at home). And at home you would also need to port forward port 22 so your college Mac and ssh into your home Mac.
    It might be an interesting exercise, but I think you would be happier using TeamViewer.com

  • Port Forwarding on Home Hub 5 not working

    Hi,
    Is anybody else having problems getting ports to forward on their Home Hub or Home Hub 5?
    I am a new BT customer, less than a week infact and BT have been utterly hopeless in getting this resolved. All they do is send me instructions for port forwarding on a homehub which I do not need and tell me that i need to pay for their tech support to investigate it further which is freaking ridiculous considering port forwarding is an essential part of any router and this router is brand new, less than a week old. (Do BMW sell you a car and then refuse to take responsibility for a broken engine?)
    My other option is buying an ADSL 802.11ac router for £150 which out of principle, i dont think i should have to do. One of the reasons i came to BT in the first place was because the homehub is supposed to be one of the best free provider supplied routers around. 
    Please only reply to this if you know what you are talking about or have experienced this same issue yourselves. I reiterate that I have not missed any configuration steps on my part and this is a case of the homehub simply not working as it is designed.
    Scenario:
    I like to have remote desktop access to my home computer from external networks. I do not use 3rd party software such as 'log me in' or 'team viewer', I like to use Microsoft Remote desktop and had been doing so for years with my Sky broadband until last week.
    I have dynamic DNS running on my machine which updates my constantly changing external IP to the dns server so dont worry about that, thats all good.
    I have correctly set up the forwarding of TCP 3389 to the static I.P of my home desktop on the homehub (and rebooted and or factory reset several times)
    Result:
    Nothing. The homehub displays as though it has forwarded the ports yet i am still unable to remote in from an external network. The port shows as closed when i run a port scanner.
    The same goes for other ports I have tried to open. For example, my Xbox One.
    BT are sending me out a replacement Hub to try but I fear that this will have the same result as i have seen a few other people post with the same issues.
    If anybody has experienced and or resolved this, please let me know and i will be forever grateful

    When you do a major network revision always reset the TC to factory and start over.. it simply remembers too much of the last setup.
    Plug WAN TC into the HH5 and run through the airport utility again. The TC must go into bridge mode. It then should work fine, but I recommend particularly with Mavericks you use strict naming.
    Not apple names.. long, loose and loopy.
    Names that are short, 2-10 characters is plenty but make an upper limit of 20.
    No spaces..
    Pure alphanumeric.. no apostrophe or any other odd character.

  • Port Forwarding for OS X Server VPN on BT Home Hub...

    We have BT Infinity using a BT Home Hub 5 and I have recently installed OS X Server to create my own VPN. However, I cannot seem to get the hub to open the ports I desire using the port forwarding tool - I have tried everything I can think of including (and a combination of all these things in one way or another)...
    Standard Port Forwarding
    Disabling uPNP
    Disabling Firewall
    Enabling DMZ directly to the OS X Server
    The ports I am trying to enable, but stay closed are:
    500
    1701
    1723
    5900
    And I have selected the 'Any' protocol in desperation, but they still show up closed on an online port checker tool like canyouseeme.org
    I create a custom application in the hub to cover these ports, and out of curiousity I added port '5900' (VNC Port) to the list, which curiously IS open when I check it, but the hub seems to refuse to open any of the other ports.
    I am beginning to think there may be something up with the router... I've Googled and spent a few hours on failing to solve this simple problem... does anyone else have any ideas?

    Remember, the port discovery websites can only test TCP ports, not UDP. I use Microsoft PortQuery tool, from a remote connection like a 3G mobile data. This can test both TCP and UDP.
    The main thing is that you have it working now Port forwarding seems to give people a lot of problems, when it should just work without any issues.
    Common problems seem to be.
    Having spaces in either device names or application names.
    Failing to apply the settings on every step of the way.
    Being on CG-NAT (IP address sharing)
    Forgetting to open any firewall connections.
    Relying on DHCP to allocate the IP address, instead of setting it on the device itself.
    Plus others....

  • BT Home Hub 3 + Back To My Mac / Port Forwarding

    I've recently got BT Infinity and along with it a BT Home Hub 3 which doesn't seem to be playing nicely with Back to my Mac.
    The setup on the Mac side of things is correct and I can see my remote computer but I just can't connect to them, or vice versa. The Back to My Mac preference is showing that the router needs configuring for better performance.
    I've ensured UPnP is enabled and forwarded the following ports to the device:
    TCP 5354
    UDP 4500
    UDP 5353
    UDP 500
    UDP/TCP 4488
    Which I found listed in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1629
    After doing some checks on these ports using http://canyouseeme.org it would seem that only one of these ports is open, and even then it's occassional.
    BT seem to state on http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12529/~/why-do-i-get-an-error-message-when-using-appl... that 'Back to My Mac' isn't compatible and this is due to a compatibility issue on Apple's part. Frustratingly this article doesn't indicate a date when this was posted. Never the less, I would presume this could only be UPnP related — i.e. the necessary ports won't open automatically. I'm unsure of what other compatibility issues there would be. If the ports are open it should work fine.
    I've read numerous threads in many forums about the BT Home Hub 3 port forwarding not working correctly, is this still true? If so, surely the device should be deemed faulty or a firmware update should have been put in place by now to resolve this. I can't seem to find any recent articles regarding this.

    Hello i have recently joined BT Infinity and have hit the issue of the Port Forwarding not working. My HH3 is on the following version of software. Will this version automatically upgrade to the latest version of firmware and will this fix my port forwarding issue?
    As i work in IT (Cisco Network Eng) i need to be able to access several devices/services at home and this is a real pain for me. If you think that this could drag on as some posts have indicated could you please let me know and i will either get a draytek or throw in a cisco 1841.

    Hello World
    Ok recived the New Home Hub 3 today, ahead of my Infinity install.
    I thought ok lets replace Trusty Home Hub 2 with the 3 as it works both on Std ADSL and Infinity
    Super Quick UI and love the GIG port BUT and its a BIGGY (well for ME) !
    THe hub is running 4.7.5.1.83.8.48 (TypeA) lastest and greatest, Upnp does work so Xbox works no prob and it can be seen in the FW Log being setup 
    BUT if you configure port forwarding by hand ie HTTP to 192.168.0.2 DOESNT WORK !!!
    I tried using a connected device to forward to and just the IP address BOTH FAIL !
    roll back in trusty Hub2 and all work again !
    Phoned in and was told after a few minutes on hold (No Problem) to roll back to Home Hub 2 and there should be a Firmware upgrade for the 3 soon to fix this issue.
    So now you know if you try it and it doesnt work

    I received HomeHub 3 this week. Overall, I am pretty satisfied with the new router. The local networking feels quicker due to the gigabit port (connected to gigabit switch). And the wifi reception is better probably due to the intelligent channel selection.
    Similarly, I tried to replicate settings from my old HomeHub 2. I wasn't able to setup port forwarding.
    The problem is the router in inaccessible using the external IP address.
    I contacted BT Broadband Help desk. I spoke to 2 operators. First told me he would investigate and call me back. Never did. Second told me they were untrained to deal with this sort of queries and suggested speaking to the BT Subscription help line.
    So, now I know thanks to you. Waiting anxiously for the patch. Hope it will be out soon.

  • BT Home Hub Port Forwarding, Device Not Listed

    Hi Guys,
    It's quite a simple one really but it has me totally stumped. I've been trying to open a couple of ports recently, for games etc and I know how all this port forwarding stuff works, but recently I had hard drive issues and had to re-install windows etc, all the usual **bleep**. Since then though, when trying to forward a port in the hub manager (I have BT Home Hub 2), my device doesn't appear in the drop down list, neither the physical hexadecimal address nor the name I assigned to the machine! My Xbox, Iphone and my dads laptops are all on the list... just not the machine I'm using right now, even though its wired up by ethernet cable and I'm using the hub for the internet to get onto this website right now! -.-
    Any help is appreciated!

    Try power cycling the hub (turn it off and on) with your device connected and see if it then appears on the list.

  • Port Forwarding not working on new Home Hub 4

    Hi all,
    I'm trying to get port forwarding going on a new Home Hub 4, specifically so I can access my Netgear Stora through its web interface on my LAN.
    I've set the rules in port forwarding for the following ports:
    Port 80 is HTTP Server
    Port 443 is HTTPS Server
    Port 21 is FTP Server
    Port 22 is SSH Server
    All these are now open and connect to Stora, which has an address supplied by DHCP.
    However, when I check with various online port checkers, none of the ports are open and checking the trouble shooting logs of the BT Home Hub shows that the connection is being rejected. This is a sample of the message that is shown:
    IN: ACCEPT [57] Connection closed (Port Forwarding: TCP 192.168.1.69:22 <-->86.141.184.236:22 [184.72.89.72:42894] CLOSED/TIME_WAIT ppp1 NAPT)
    What can I do to make port forwarding work? I can't change the IP address of the Stora as I need to get into it via its web interface to do that.
    I can navigate directly through Explorer to the files on the Netgear Stora NAS but not through the web interface.
    Can anyone help?

    i think by applying a static DNS i got it working, not 100% sure yet. edit: yep that worked, everyone can connect once again.

  • Home Hub 3 Port forwarding for Netgear Stora

    Hi, 
    I have had a Negear Stora on my home network with a HH3 for about 6 months. Up untill about 10 days ago, all was good, however now when i try to access it remotely via the mystora.com web portal, i am getting the following error messages
      Stora is Online,
      but cannot be accessed remotely.
      Your Stora is not currently accessible. This may be for several reasons:
      • Your ISP is not allowing Internet traffic to your Stora
      • A firewall is blocking internet access to your Stora
      • Port forwarding is not correctly configured on your router, or UPnP is disabled
    I have enabled UPnP and have turned of the firewall off, but still no joy. 
    Is anybody else having this issue? Can somebody please guide me threw the port forwarding as i dont want to braak anything else.
