Home Hub 3 - Connection dropping from N to G?

Hello all; I hope someone can help me with this!
I have recently installed the new Home Hub 3 (replacing a Home hub 1).  I have it connected by wifi to a Mac which has a built-in 802.11 connection.  The reason I changed to Home Hub 3 is that next month I am getting a digital box for the TV which works best using a 802.11 N connection speed.
Normally, the connection is by 802.11 N (I can see this on the Mac SysInfo), and I get a solid 5 bar connection.  However, sometimes this drops to 1 or 2 bars, and the wifi speed drops from N to G.  When this happens, I cannot change it back to a N speed without rebooting.
Does anyone know what might be causing this?  It seems to be random.  The computer is not moving, and is only about 12 feet from the Home Hub with clear air in between.  Is it likely to be the Home Hub which is causing the change, or the Mac?  Is there anyway to "lock" the Homehub to only broadcast on N?
Thanks for any answers.

the only problem changing the BT Home hub 3 wireless channel manually it stops the new software from finding the best channel one of the features of the new hub. they advise this in the product page details (section taken shown below). What i found was to experiment hub positions my example i have 3 story house so i placed the hub on the second floor away from fridge /microwave/ wireless phone etc on the 1st floor.  the wireless computers are on floor 2 & 3, it improved reception by 50%. the computer down on floor 1 is connected by ethernet.
Change wireless channel
Your Hub is always monitoring the wireless channel it’s using and if it detects too much
interference it will automatically change to another channel. If you want to manually
change to a channel of your choice, follow the steps below, but this will stop the
automatic channel selection feature.
1 Access Hub Manager by typing bthomehub.home into your web browser.
2 Click Settings.
3 If asked, enter your Hub Admin password. You’ll find this on the bottom of your Hub.
4 In the Basic Settings menu, click Change the wireless channel to avoid interference.
5 Click the Refresh button.
6 Wait a minute for your device to pick up the new channel.

  • Bt infinity - home hub 5 - dropping connection

Ok guys, might be a difficult one for you here.
I have had infinity installed since October. I have always suffered from drop outs in my connection.
What happens is that the big blue light on the hh will turn orange for maybe 5 seconds or so and then go back to blue. But it's long enough to kick me out of an online game for example.
Router logs show something for the disconnection, but no info really.
I have had 3 home hubs, brand new internal wiring in my house, and 4 or 5 engineers out to check things out, as the line was also a lot slower than initially expected.
I have had another engineer out yesterday and today, who has changed my entire line back to the green box. But it has just disconnected on my again whilst playing titanfall.
Does anybody here have any ideas? Engineers are at a loss, BT India support are clueless. I'm out of ideas
    Cheers guys

The only thing that makes me wonder, is that I am not seeing these VDSL up and down resyncs. And most people have been seeing these issues since late January, mine go back to October.

I do have a OR modem around, unused, that I managed to talk one of the engineers in to giving me, as plan was to use my AirPort Extreme, but I didn't want to start using that until the connection was fixed, as first thing bt support would say is that it's my router causing the fault.
I could try the OR modem, just not sure if this is my problem or not. Anybody know anything from the logs I have posted? Or will any other logs help out?

  • Home Hub 4 dropping connection

Hello - I hope someone can help
I have had repeated problems with broadband over several months - even changing supplier to BT - no difference. I have renewed wiring, changed telephone sets, filters - the lot and are now using the BT Home Hub 4. This has now been connected to the test socket for a couple of weeks now and it is still dropping connection on a regular basis. I reported a fault with a noisy line a couple of weeks ago and it seemed to briefly resolve itself.
I have tried to log an issue with BT but the line test shows no fault. The broadband speed test is about right for our location too.
At the end of my tether now and looking for any more help before biting the bullet and risking a £130 bill for an engineer to check the line. I have a hunch it is the main BT socket itself. Any ideas ?
    Cheers
    Jim

Hi Welcome to the community forums
Have you tried the quiet line test dial 17070 option 2 if any noise is heard this needs reporting to BT Faults on 151 with no mention of broadband in the call once resolved your broaband will start to improve

  • Home Hub 3 Dropping Skype Connection

I have just replaced my HH 2 for the HH 3 and find that when connected to Skype the connection is lost after aprox 10 mins of usage and my PC locks up and I have to reset my PC to obtain connection again.
I am connected to the HH 3 by the Ethernet cable.
I had no problems using Skype with my HH 2.
Have temporarily turned off the Auto chan selection to see if this may improve and hold Skype conectivty.
    Software Version: 4.7.5.1.83.8.57.1.3 Type A.
    Any advise very welcome.

as connection time only 2min there is little to see apart from a good connection with noise margin at the normal of 6db.  stats are more help if you Can post with longer connection time - longer the better
have you tried replacing the filter as they don't last forever
have you noticed if your connection drops coincide with making/receiving phone calls

  • Home hub 3 disconnecting from ADSL

I can't find the solution to this anywhere so here goes:
I have a home hub 3. All devices are wired to it via a simple unmanaged Ethernet switch except for 3 android devices that occasionally connect wirelessly (most of the time they are off, so nothing really to do with this problem). The Ethernet switch connects to one of the home hub RJ45 ports. Nothing else is connected to the hub on its RJ45 ports.
There are 2 connections into the Ethernet switch. One goes off to other Ethernet switches where up to 4 PCs are connected (W7, Vista & 2 XP machines). The other connection goes off to a series of unmanaged Ethernet switches where there are some 30 IP cameras (again, all wired, and would be out of range for wireless connection to the hub anyway). All cameras have fixed LAN IP addresses in the range 192.168.1.200 upwards. The hub's DHCP has been set to an upper limit of 192.168.1.199. The PCs all use DHCP getting given LAN addresses of 192.168.1.64 upwards.
The cameras do not stream video or send pictures outside the LAN. All cameras are capable of syncing with one or more web timeservers, but that functionality is turned off on each camera. The only activity I have seen (using Wireshark) is the occasional ARP request from cameras which is broadcast (to 255.255.255.255). As Wireshark is running on one of the PCs I can't confirm that nothing else is going from a camera to the hub (as I can only see packets that are broadcast or going to/from that PC), but can't imagine what would be.
When all the cameras are connected the broadband crashes (yellow light on). Unplug the ethernet line that goes to the cameras from the Ethernet switch (the final device on the LAN before the hub) and, after a while, broadband is back again. This happens whether or not the cameras are streaming video or sending pictures. I'm also fairly sure (haven't looked at it recently) that if I isolate some of the cameras (e.g. leaving only 15 connected) the broadband stays connected even when I route the cameras through the hub's Ethernet ports and get video from several of them at once.
Has ANYONE got any ideas what could be going on? Or how to fix the problem...a new hub 3 has been reqested from BT but it won't arrive for several weeks - don't bother to ask why as that's complicated too:-)...don't think a new hub 3 will fix things. I would go for another router but until I can understand what the problem really is I could simply be wasting monay as that might not work either!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

After trying lots of ideas, I think I now have a solution and some idea of what may be causing the problem. I hope this explanation may be of help to anyone else facing a similar problem.
As mentioned in my original post the HH3 drops its ADSL conection when about 30 IP cameras (or fewer) are connected - that happens whether or not any of them are streaming video. None of the cameras are sending video over the ADSL connection. All the cameras are connected via daisychained ethernet switches to a single ethernet cable running back to the HH3. The ADSL connection would drop sometime within a few seconds to a few minutes.
What I didn't mention in my original post is that all the cameras and ethernet switches are powered from a completely separate mains supply.
In desparation and doing some lateral thinking I began to wonder if electrial noise was being introduced to the HH3 and if that was causing the problem. All the "home" PCs are connected to the hub via 85mbps HomePlugs. Searching for optoisolaters that would eliminate electrical noise I realised that the HomePlugs probably contained such devices (or some equivalent). So, since I had a spare one, I plugged the "camera" ethernet cable into the spare HomePlug and plugged the HomePlug into the mains.
It has solved the problem as far as I can see - no dropouts on the ADSL now for over an hour and several of the cameras streaming video.
I hope this may help someone in the future!

  • BT Home Hub connection issue on XBOX 360

I have just upgraded from a BT Home Hub 3, to the BT Home Hub 4, before the upgrade I ran Sky TV wired, and 3PCs wifi, my Ipad and my Iphone. I also ran my XBOX 360 wifi, and a PS3 wifi, all worked no problem.
Now I am on BT Home Hub 4, all my connections are the same all working well apart from the XBOX 360.
I have tried doing the fix on the BT site logging into the Hub changed the SIDD and set the other bit to NO. this did not work.
I then reset the XBOX to factory settings as this was in another fix, I then reset the XBOX to the Hub 4, logged on to call of duty ghosts got half way through a game it crashed out saying no conection reset to test conection.
The Hub will conect to my XBOX 360 but only stay conected for up to 14 mins at most.
Do I need to go back to my BT Home Hub 3, Can any body help its starting to be a pain. As one good person said use a wired conection that would be good, but due to location would be hard. I did think upgrading was ment to make things better not harder. Please Help.

To add, I had on online chat with BT, they said that no problems exist about XBOX 360  and the BT Home Hub to do with wifi.
If this is the case why have a fix on the BT site, that does not work may I add well not on my XBOX.
I found BT online chat not much help in this case.
    Please advise and help

  • Home hub connected but can't open web pages

    Hi
Having a problem accessing any web pages. Has been like this for last 3 days. All the lights on the BT Home Hub are on and according to the task bar on my laptop it is connected and signal etc is all fine. When you open browser it tries to connect but never loads a page and eventually times out. Have phoned BT broadband help and they say there is nothing wrong with the line. Pretty certain it's not my laptop as my wife's has exactly the same problem and she uses a different browser and has different anti-virus software.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I have also had exactly the same problem!
I've had the BT Broadband option 1 for at least 3 years now and not had any major problems (lucky me).  I decided to go for the new package (TV, Broadband (option 2), & calls package £18 per month - currently on offer) as I wanted to get Sky Sports through BTVision.  I'm not allowed Sky or cable TV where I live.  The activation date for Broadband option 2 was Monday 7th March and Monday 14th for BTVision.  This also included a new router i.e. HomeHub3.
On Sunday the 6th March my internet connection was fine i.e. could open web pages, get email etc (using a BT Voyager Router).  On Monday 7th I went on line and was unable to open web pages.  I thought it might be a minor problem i.e. back up in an hour.
On Tuesday the 8th March I still had the same problem (Voyger Router) but had also received my new router (BT Home Hub 3).  I decided to install the new hub thinking that would resolve the problem but it did not.  I then tried a wirless & cable (2 different cables) connection to my PC & XBox and still could get online even though I was "Connected".  I phoned the broadband help desk and was on the phone for at least an hour with no success.  The help desk agent said it could be a problem with my account and said he would ring me back on Wed at 8pm........guess what?  No phone call.  I then phoned up again (10pm) & went through all the usual tests.......again!  It still didn't work and I was told that it was probably a problem with my PC and they put me through to another department that should be able to help.  I was then asked what the problem was (no communication between department then!)  I had to go through the whole thing again and was then told that I would have to pay £10 a month (for at least 3 months) for them to do further checks.
Wednesday & Thursday evening I phoned the Broadband help line (same tests again - no notes on my previous calls!) and still no success. I didn't pay for the £10 month service (BT Home help) out of principle and do not know what to do next.

It may be that your line has had DLM (Dynamic Line Management) kick in and slow your speeds down if it saw a fault/problem on your line. If the problem has been resolved DLM will slowly raise the speed back up. This is an automated process and can but not necessarily will take up to two or three weeks.

  • Home wifi connection dropping

My iphone is having a problem staying connected to my home wifi connection. It has worked perfectly for the past month, but all of a sudden it started asking me to reenter the wifi password. Now it stays connected for only a few seconds before it changes over to 3G or Edge. But I can connect to other wifi outside of my home. I have reset passwords, updated firmware, etc.
    Any suggestions?

If you have no problems on other networks then you could be having WiFi interference problems at home or your router is failing. There may be another nearby WiFi network which is using the same WiFi channel that you are using (there are 11 selectable channels) or a 2.4 GHz cordless phone nearby could be interfering.
There are PC/Mac programs which can scan for nearby WiFi networks and show what channels they are using (for example, iStumbler). You can administer your router to set what channel to use (see the documentation that came with it or visit the manufacturer's support web page.)
If no interference problems are found then your router may be having problem (even if some other devices still appear to work with it). Consider replacing your router.
If you need more help please give the make/model router you are using and how it is configured.

  • Why does Home share Connection drop every night?

    Hello all!
I have three Apple Tv 3's hooked up, 2 wired, the other one wireless. I can stay connected to home sharing all day on all three of them without issue. But for some reason, every morning they have all three lost connection to home sharing. Even restarting the device does not reconnect it. All I can do is exit out of itunes and restart it. Then the home sharing is connected again and I can access my files.
This wouldn't be such a big deal if it was just me, but my wife does not want to have to fool with this every morning to play videos for our daughter. I was using Boxee Boxes prior to this and they worked flawlessly.
The computer does not go to sleep or hibernate and neither do the apple tv's. I have tested with firewall and anti-virus disabled. Called Apple support and they are clueless. Any ideas?

Two things jump into my mind: poor WiFi signal strength on the desktop PC or a dirty OS installation on the desktop PC. I'm quite sure that this has nothing to do with the cisco VPN client itself.
Assuming that you reach your remote workspace through the cisco VPN client it might also be that the remote part (the VPN concentrator) gets congested and drops your connection but than other employees would complain as well (can be checked with your ICT guys).
The thing is: when you lose Internet connection on your laptop while surfing a web site and connection comes back again within no time you won't notice anything. If the same happens to a system constantly receiving encrypted packets and some are missing the VPN client will drop the connection. Completely different protocols (http/ipsec) that are differently prone to packet drops...

  • Wi Fi Light On Home Hub Keeps dropping

I know this subject comes up every now and again but my Blue Wi Fi Light keeps going out every couple of minutes which is causing all my wireless devices to lose connection (very frustrating).
I've tried changing channels and turning everything on and off but could it be a problem that is beyond my powers to resolve?

There are 13 channels to choose from, if you disable smart wireless.
Smart wireless ony checks channels 1, 6, and 11.  These are quite often in use, which is why it keeps retrying them.
