Home Hub 3 - Impact of changing Hub IP Gateway Add...

After some help/reassurance here please!
I just had an Infinity installation along with a new Home Hub 3 type B
I noticed some problems using some applications run over a VPN to a company I am working for
One of their network techies told me this (excuse the English, it is a Swiss company):
In this case, there is a wrong configuration of the local router/dns server.
The returned IP 92.242.132.15 is an intenet address. The local physiical network has a configured DNS on 192.168.1.254, this address is reserved for special use on the Cisco security agent. The local router device must be reconfigured to not be a DNS or not use 192.168.1.254.
Looking at the Hub settings sure enough 192.168.1.254 is the Hub IP Gateway Address.
There are some instructions here on BT site on how to change the settings
But, if I follow these and change:
DHCP Server Enable from Yes to No
Hub IP Gateway Address from 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.1.253
DHCP Network Range End address from 192.168.1.253 to 192.168.1.252
Will this cause any problems?

OK... no one knows. Fair enough.
Thought I would answer myself in case it helps anyone using the search facility in the future.
I found that in fact you can reset the hub to a different preset range of IP addresses. 172.16.0.nn
This worked fine, and does NOT reboot the hub in case anyone is concerned about that.
Note you may need to renew the DHCP lease on the attached PCs... this is simply opening a command prompt:
type "ipconfig" (no ") if that shows an IP address in the old range then type
ipconfig /release - should now have zeros
ipconfig /renew - should now have an IP address in new range
One of the techies that did not answer this may say you do not need the "release" first. But I was not sure so did both.
This also fixed the contention with the VPN's Cisco Security Agent

  • Home hub 3 manager password change.

    I have searched the site for this subject but found nothing that matched my problem.
    Recieved my hub today and had no problems getting onto the net. As I have no wireless on my PC I connect my hub via an eithernet cable.
    As my laptop does not support the factory settings of WPA2 I need to change the settings to WEP via the Home hub settings. (bthomehub/home)
    I am now faced with the following page.
    I have placed the admin password which is on the pull out tab on my hub and consists of 8 letters and numbers into the admin password box. I have placed a new password in the next two box's and pressed the "change password and open BT hub manager. This I did and the next view showed me some router settings but not the security ones. I clicked on the settings tab at the top of the page and was again shown the picture above.
    Surely if I had changed my password and got into the router manager, why does it keep asking me to change my password??
    Previous routers ask for a username followed by a password, this does not even get this far.
    Can anyone help please?

    Glad you solved the logging in... 
    However I wouldn't stay with WEP as that is a very easy to crack OLD wireless encryption.
    If you have a spare USB socket you could consider using a wireless adapter.
    I use this Edimax wireless n type. in my laptop.. and "Supports 64/128-bit WEP, WPA , WPA2 encryption" 
    The mini size only sticks out a little a sample price HERE.
    There is a Nano version spec HERE.
    However the larger version   imho would stick out of a laptop too much and is more suitable for a PC.
    I have them running in two laptops running vista and win 7 and a third older laptop running XP.
    There are many other manufacturers of USB wireless adapters.
    Just in case you thought you were stuck with WEP.

  • Changing PC that manages the Home Hub?

    HI
    I'm just getting a new PC which will replace my old home desktop machine...does anyone know how I can find a copy of the Home Hub manager software that runs on Windows 8 (of course I have lost my disk that I had the first time round... :-)  )?
    I'll only be connecting with the home hub wirelessly from now on, whereas previously I used Powerline adapters..I'm assuming this wont be an issue.

    you don't need the cd  if you enter 192.168.1.254 into your browser then you will get hub manager where you can change password or wifi password or channel etc

    is it possible to change the default ID eg rename from "BTHomeHub2-****" to something a bit more user friendly? -another reason for wanting to do this is because we seem to be saturated with BT home hubs in this location which makes it difficult to identify ones own network.

    Sorry to hijack this thread, but if anyone could help, that would be great.
    Ive just setup a new HomeHub2, and it mostly works fine. However, I have tried to change the SSID a couple of times (going through the advanced settings section of the hubs' browser page), and it seems to work briefly, but I am unable to then connect my PS3 to the changed SSID (going through the relevant network settings section). And following that, reconnecting to the changed SSID from my laptop will not work.
    The error message is that the WPA key is wrong. I know that I have not typed it in incorrectly, and am wondering what might be going on here? Does the WPA key need resetting also?

  • Changing Home Hub 2 to Home Hub 5

    I am on BT's standard broadband, not infinity, which suits my needs fine.
    I am currently using a home hub 2, which seems to work without problems, but have been given a home hub 5 by a friend.
    Are there any benfits to  changing to the newer hub?
    Will it work with ordinary broadband or is a home hub 5 only suitable for infinity?
    Would there be any installation problems?

    I've just done this switch on an ADSL line. The HH5 works in exactly the same way as my HH2. I wanted the gigabit Ethernet ports so I could remove a switch from my system simplifying the system and saving power. The wireless range seems better than the HH2 and some connections work quicker with the 5GHz wireless. I don't have any wireless ac devices so cannot comment on that. My home server works happily and I've port forwarded the server to allow access when I'm away from home.
    On my experience you shouldn't have any problems swapping. If anything does arise you can always put your HH2 back. I'm ready for fibre if and when it appears on my exchange.

    Anytime you change out a modem or modem router like the HomeHub, the AirPort Express needs to be reset back to factory default settings and then set up again.
    The reason for this is that the Express is retaining some or all of the settings to connect to your "old" modem or hub, so it will not work correctly with a new device unless you start over again from factory default settings on the Express.
    Power up the Express for a few minutes
    Hold in the reset button on the side of the Exprsss for 8-10 seconds, then release and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
    Now, set up the Express again, like you did originally with the "old" modem or hub that you had previously.

  • Changing Home Hub 2

    I am swapping the Home Hub 2 for an Apple Airport Extreme as my primary router as I am having some problems with the Home Hub. Will I need to put in any userman and password details when setting up and if so where can I find them without having to contact India.I have BT Infinity broadband.

    Everything I have is Apple as well and it all works together very well on the Infinity service with the Airport Extreme.
    If you follow the setup instructions it takes about ten minutes to get it all going.
    The Extreme allows me to use my Apple laptop at the bottom of the garden, about 75 metres from the house, whereas with the HH2, I could barely get a signal 10 metres from the house.

  • Issues with Home Hub 3 Wireless. And lousy teleph...

    I don't know if this forum is moderated or followed by BT support staff, but I sure hope so.
    After coming from Virgn Media for my BB to BT infinity (Awesome speeds btw!) I'm pleased with the connection and, up until today, the support. I now have issues with my Wireless devices on the HH3.
    This is the outline of my setup:
    I have the Open reach modem connected to the home hub.  I then have the 1Gbps ethernet port from the home hub that is connected to a 1Gbps 5 Port switch that connects my wired network together (Consisting of my Xbox, Networked Printer and my Desktop PC).  Wireless serves 2 Laptops, an Xperia U phone, and a G5 Ipod touch (not all mine, I have a flat mate).
    My issue is that when more than one device connects via WiFi, the WiFi network has serious issues: The connections don't drop per se, but websites are not delivered, data transfer is intermittant at best - i.e. the WiFi network simply does not work.  When there is only one device, there is no issue.
    Now, being a techie (I don't mean to title drop, but I think it's important that technical support know that I know my stuff) I'm an electrical engineer (The graduate type) and I know my IT - so I have my own idea of what's wrong with this.
    Now, as my order was not completed until yesterday, techincal support couldn't/wouldn't help until today.  Yesterday, however, I spent hours trying to solve my issues and got as far semi-solving the problem.  I managed to get everything working nicely together when Wireless N is disabled and only a/b/g is enabled.  Great, but a main selling point is the Wireless N and I want to use this.
    So, today I phoned technical support.  I should also note here, and I made this perfectly clear with support, that when the WiFi starts to missbehave, the wired network still works perfectly and I have no issues with internet connectivity with any wired devices.  So, clearly this is not a line fault - it's on this side, aka, the router WiFi side where the problem resides.  Support decided to do a line test anyway - and of course it got the all clear.  He then asked me to reset the router (Yey, again after I had done it plenty of times before, only this time I had customised the SSID and the LAN IP addresses and now they need done again).  He then went on to state that I should receive an e-mail with instructions on what to do next, and if they are still issues to reply to a text message that will be sent.
    Duly, an email arrived.  It began with "Sorry you had to call us today about your wireless disconnecting. We’re pleased we could help you get it working again." and continued on with with this theme.  No, my problem is not resolved!  I phoned back, this time advising me to change channels, and check individual devices to see if they're any conflicts - I did this pretty quickly and disabled and re-enabled WiFi on my Laptop, phone, ipod and still to no avail.
    I have now been told that I will get a phone call between 3 and 3:30pm to see if the WiFi will settle down. huh!
    I don't mean to be such a pain and sound like such a git, but this is not an issue that I believe the technical support (via the call centre anyway) will be able to solve.  This is an issue with the HH3, mine at least, not being able to handle mutiple WiFi devices conntected simualtaneously - all but one on N, the other on G.  Now, I'm of the understanding that this shouldn't be a problem.  I'm sick of telephone support going through their script without listening to the whole issue either or beleiving that I spent a good 2 hours yesterday getting to the bottom of this.  I don't need line tests, I don't need resetting the router, I don't need changing channels - I've did all this!
    So it looks as though I'm stuck on HH3 in 'G' for now until we solve this issue.
    Further information: I'm using the type A HH3; again wired devices are not impacted in any way from this issue; I have tried multiple different channels; YES! I've reset the router and power cycled it; And this issue happens wether my WiFi devices are 1 meter away from the HH3 or 15 meters away.
    Could this be a bad HH3 or frimware issue? Can someone suggest something or highlight something that I've perhaps overlooked or missed?

    Hi Everyone..
    Hopefully someone could shed some light on this wierd issue I'm having.. and in a way I'm glad to see its not just me having the same issue as Jamesvolvo...
    After three engineer visits, well actually two visits as the 1st engineer was booked out between 8am and 1pm slot, but turned up after 3:30pm when I'd gone back to work.
    As far as I can tell, this dropout problem became more noticeable within the last 4+ weeks where suddenly getting shouts from the family 'has the broadband gone down' and when checking the hub 5 seeing it with its blinking orange/red light and a red/orange B symbol (the light eventually returning to green and then blue) and the dropout consistency ranging from a few minutes uptime to a few hours uptime.
    Also on top of the hub5 loosing it's WAN link on a few occastions I noticed that when the broadbad went down/up, I was unable to hear a dial tone when trying to call out on the landline and a phonecall from a mobile to the landline number would after allow me to hear a dial tone (where there was none before).
    So 2nd engineer came out, nice chap.. and looked at the wiring at the infinity master socket, the socket at the front door and the splitter/bridge connection (which was put in when I went from BT ADSL to Infinity by BT contractors) etc.. and told me that it'd all been wired up wrong and was impressed that anything was working. So he made the necessary re-wirings and tested the line and the broadband and found no faults.
    So the next day or so I then get a call from the wife informing me that she can't dial out on the landline and that there was no dialtone. So when I got home from work I then went round (again), powercycling the phones and making sure that they were connected into the sockets correctly and even tested (as per BT line fault diagnostic process) into the infinity enpoint test socket.. still no dial tone.. so again I dialed the landline from my mobile and after the phone rang and I hung up, I then found I got a dial tone. (yay).
    Checking the hub5 WAN syslogs I saw the same behaviour as jamesvolvo - (see below - ive filtred out all the other lines just to show the up/down/up/down cycles)

    So I called out BT again and again got the BT fault manager leaving me a voicemail saying not to worry but they had found 'something' on the local network and would also send an engineer to the CAB and test my connection from there saying that the engineer wouldnt need access to my home as the previous engineer had already done the re-wiring and tested it all ok.
    Wouldnt you believe it, the engineer needed access to my home so I had to dash back from work to meet the engineer who was in the process of re-wiring the connection in the street. He'd found some water in the black cylinder under the pavement, so cut the wiers and put on new connectors etc and then went inside the house to test the line and broadband (again). And as with previous tests, no fault found.
    He did give me a heads up as to not to keep calling BT (openreach) out, as the line tested ok and if i kept doing this, BT would no doubt start charging me for the callouts.
    This kind of leaves me in a bit of a wierd position as where do I go from here? he suggested that I get BT to change the hub 5 from the mk1 to the mk2 that had just come out to see if that would fix the issue, but could not tell me straight why I was having this issue, I even showed him a video I took on my phone of the problem when I lost he dial tone and the testing I did, (BT phone LCD showed NO LINE) as if thats not enough proof that I have an intermittent problem!! and showed him the WAN syslosg to which he agreed "something definately wasn't right" and just re-iterated that it woudl be worth getting the latest hub 5 out of BT's doors.
    So im having to post here to see if anyone has an answer as I'd hate to incur any costs from BT.. (£139??) Hopefully this forum moderator will see the issues we're having and help us out.. (other than making a seperate/new thread with the information I already posted in here)..

    I've not done a quiet line test but will go though that process if/when I have a problem with the no dial tone next time.
    Unfortunately I dont have a corded phone but for sanity's sake will no doubt get a cheap one from somewhere 9even if its just for future line testing) to eliminate any issues with the cordless bt phone I have.
    Broadband doesnt appear to drop when I recieve a call and when I have had no dial tone in th epast I still have had broadband access. Although i know that on one occasion the hub5 did its usual sidconenct/reconnect (giving me broadband) but when checking the phone - there was no dial tone.
    Also the title/problem description should change as its been moved - should be "Hub 5 keep disconnecting/reconnecting frequently"
    Note: Looking at the same reported behaviour on other threads I can see as a last update from StephanieG (Community manager) below...

    We can confirm that our technical team have rolled out a fix to all affected Home Hub 5As, so your service should be back to normal. The fix is a configuration change to the current firmware 4.7.5.1.83.8.204. We apologise for this issue and thank you for your patience.

    So does this mean there's an additional fix to firmware release 4.7.5.1.83.8.204 ? as it appears that the fix was on or after 23/2/15 and my last firmware update was 22/1/15..

  • Issues with Gagabit connection on BT Home Hub 3.0

    I did post this is the BB Other Forum, but got no reply, maybe someone can answer it in this one.
    I have just received a BT Home Hub 3.0 to replace my old HH 1.0
    I have connected the hub up and 'assumed' that if I plug port 4 into my existing gigabit home network everything would work simple.  However this is not the case.
    My existing ;working' home network has the following
    1 x PC
    1 x Laptop
    1 x N.A.S
    These are all connected by a 5 port Netgear Switch (GS605) they all have the yellow light to say they are at gigabit speed.
    When I plug the HH 3.0 into the swtch, the light only comes up as orange (100mps).  I have tried changing cables, but still the same result.
    However, if I connect the PC directly to the HH 3.0 then my Local Area Connection says it is connected at 1.0Gbps.
    When connected to the switch, my connection through the HH 3.0 is very slow, but when connected directly to the HH 3.0 it is running at speeds I previously had.
    I have disconnected all items from the switch, powered down the HH 3.0 and connected it on its own.  The yellow (1Gbps) light flashes for a while and then changes to orange.
    Can anyone advise?

    I have tired connecting just the HH 3.0 to the Netgear Switch with cables that I know work at 1 Gbps and into all the ports.  Resetting the HH 3.0 on several occasions.
    Each time the light flashed yellow and then turned to orange.  I know the switch works as I have green lights when known Gbps items are connected, eg, PC, Laptop and NAS.
    When I connect my PC directly to the HH 3.0 in the Gbps my network connection comes up as 1 Gbps.
    It is just when I connect the HH to the switch.
    When I go to the Home Network setting on the HH I have the following.  The hub is connected to the switch on ethernet port 2
    PC connected at 1000 Mbps (directly to the Gbps on the home hub)
    BT Vision connected at 100 Mbps (directly to port 1 on the home hub)
    Laptop connected at 100 Mbps (connected to the switch) but is showing as 1 Gbps on the switch.
    NAS connected at 100 Mbps (connected to the switch) but is showing as 1 Gbps on the switch.
    Any further ideas?

  • Problem with password in home hub manager

    I have a pc and a laptop connected wirelessly to homehub 3. connection is fine having swapped the hub for a new one.
    The problem I have now is that when i go into hh manager on the laptop, I cannot enter a password to get to settings.
    I get admin as user and cursor won't work  in password panel.
    On the pc it works fine. It's no biggy as I can acess settings on the pc but anyone know why it is happening?
    This is the screen I get. Different to the usual one.

    Swapped from a what version hub? It does sound like you may of been using a v1 or v1.5 hub prior to using the hub3
    What happens if you go to saved passwords on your laptop, locate the 'admin' one, make a note of it just in case and delete it. Does this allow you to access the hub manager now?

    Hi guys hope you can help; I am trying to add my Home Hub 3 as a 2nd router (ie an access point) to my home network and struggling.
    What am I trying to achieve.
    I have a fully functioning home network which is working great but the wireless range does not extend to the room above my garage, some distance away from the main house. I currently service it with an Ethernet link from my E4200 router, via the mains wiring, to link to a PS3 there. But I want to extend this to have a wireless network in the remote room so I can link multiple devices - rather than spend more money, deploying a 2nd router which I already have  is preferable.
    What have I got.
    I have a Linksys E4200 router (nice piece of kit) attached to my ADSL line via a Belkin N1 wireless modem-router set to  “modem only” mode (I was using a DSL modem until yesterday but that went AWOL and digging out the Belkin router I saw that it had a modem only function – and it/they worked first time )
    All of my gear in the house is attached wirelessly to the E4200 which is delivering circa 11.5mbps from a maximum of 12.5mbps for the line measured by BT onsite. So  all is  fine there.
    What have I done to try and use the HH3
    Linked an Ethernet cable between one of the Ethernet ports on the E4200 to a mains plug.
    Linked an Ethernet cable from a mains plug to one of the Ethernet ports on the HH3 router.
    Ie as the PS3 was linked.
    3.  Switched on the HH3 router: the power light is solid blue, the wireless light is solid blue, the broadband light is off
    4. Connected my laptop to the HH3 network and loading up a web page on IE9 displays a web page from bthomehub.home/etc etc with title BT Home Hub and a message “Can’t connect to Broadband”. It is the start of a self- diagnostic routine. Answering all the questions I eventually get a Home Hub Administrative Home Page displayed.
    Is there a quicker way of getting to this admin page??
    5.  I switched off DHCP
    I changed the IP address from 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.1.200 as this seems to be what the other threads on this subject did.
    When I went to apply the change a message came up telling me that I might not be able to access the HH3. I ploughed on disregarding this and needless to say I could not then access the HH3 via the web interface and trying to access a web site nothing happened.
    6.  I did a hardware reset on the HH3
    7. Going through the motions again, when I got to the admin pages again, I switched off DHCP and this time left the IP address alone, ie 192.168.1.254.
    When I went to apply this  I got the message
    “After changing these settings you will need to renew the IP address of all devices connecting to your BT Home Hub. Please follow the instructions provided with your devices.”
    I applied the change – but have not yet done any fooling around with IP addresses on my laptop because I don’t want to start mucking around with my laptop
    I then tried to access a website, and failed, but on this occasion rather than nothing happening, the Home Hub website came up  again displaying the error message page.
    And that is where I stand. All looks so easy when reading other threads on this and other forums but it is not working for me.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    The IP settings on the E4200 are
    IP  192.168.1.1
    Range  192.168.1.100  to 192.168.1.149
    Also connection type on the E4200 is POE not POA – as far as I  recall that is what it needed to be to connect to the DSL modem and work.

    I have actually came across this page before - I seem to hit a snag when I connect the repeater hub (my HH3).  As outlined, I have at all times kept the repeater hub connected via ehternet into one of the regular LAN ports to my main HH5.
    But when I connect my laptop to the repeat hub (HH3), I am actually connected to the internet somehow (I assuem using the HH5 network) but under my network connections it says I am connected to the HH3.  As a result, when I go to the homehub settings page 192.168.1.254, it brings me to the main HH5 settings page and not the repeater HH3.
    According to the instructions it says I should "Ignore the not connected page", but I am connected and I cant seem to alter any of the settings on my HH3 while it is connected to the HH5.
    Any other pointers?

  • Wireless Connection Problems for Home Hub 3 and Vi...

    We have upgraded from BT Home Hub 2 to version 3 and had a BT man (engineer) visit to set it up. He did so with no problems on our PC (wired, runnning XP) and installed all relevant software on the PC and this is connected which so far has been fast (enough - as expected) and reliable. Once the 'main' computer in the house was connected we then tried to connect other things to the internet using this BT Hub 3.
    However when attempting to connect our family laptop (running Vista) we hit trouble. Initially I tried to use the icon in the tray (bottom right of the screen) by clicking on connect to a network, then selecting our hub, then inputting the wireless key and going through the menus correctly. It would only connect 'locally' and not recognise the hub. It says identifying then says unidentified (public network BT Hub 3) and only 'local' access which I then change to private network. With my preivious internet I was able to set it up as Home network - now I can only choose between public or private BUT NOT Home, Work or Public.
    So I then tried the BT disc that comes with the hub into the laptop. I go through the menus - it asks is the broadband light steady blue? Yes. Click next to continue wireless set up. So I press continue. It then asks for the wireless network/SSID BTHub3- numbers and letters and the wireless key. So I put that in correctly (double checking) and click next. It then says Connecting to your Hub which then gets ticked but then the checking wireless key doesn't tick - it crosses, and says failed. It asks me to check I typed the numbers and letters correctly (I am sure of that) and It goes to Manuel set up. Where I select my hub and again type in the wireless key and click next. But the same thing happens - connecting to your hub gets ticked but checking wireless key fails.
    I then get a message that says i should do a wired set up, which I can do and works but on the laptop wired solutions is just not satisfactory - laptops need wireless connectivity. Is this a problem with my laptop, Vista or the hub/modem or a combination.
    I also have been able to connect other things to the internet such as a netbook (running Windows 7) and a games console. Please comment if anthing needs explaining or more detail. Your help will be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    John46: I uninstalled the Hub programmes you said to. I then tried to connect to a network (wirelessly - accessed either by going to Start - Connect to or from the icon in the tray (bottom right). I selected my hub and clicked connect. It does its thing and says 'successfully connected to...' I close that and go onto Network and Sharing Center and it shows its trying to identify the network and wait a few seconds it then shows 'unidentified network (public network)...' and that I have only got local access and so cannot surf the web.
    As I mentioned in my earlier post:
    With my previous Internet I was able to set it up as Home network - now I can only choose between public or private BUT not got the choice between Home, Work or Public.
    Hope I've explained myself.

    Make sure the MBA has ipv6 set to link-local only for wireless.
    I strongly recommend using short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    eg TCgen5 and TCwifi
    In fact if you keep having wireless issues.. with the MBA in the same room as the TC, change the wireless name to TC24ghz and TC5ghz so you have different names for both bands and see if that doesn't help.. try to connect to this band and then the other.
    Use WPA2 personal security.. password 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    Do not hide the wireless.. that is against the code and simply leads to issues.
    If you still have issues.. post back.. does the MBA work ok on other routers or wireless access points??
