Home Hub 3 with low sync speed

 Excuse a newbie who's somewhat jealous of people complaining how they only get 8Mbps!
A combination of factors means that for months I have been getting a sync of 2624-3040, which equates to a profile of 2000-2500 and resultant download speeds of 1650-2250 using my old Voyager 2091. Then about a year ago, after fitting an I-plate etc. etc. I was achieving fairly consistent downloads at 2200 - so I asked for BT Vision. I can't comment on it, because almost immediately my download speed dropped and my profile was set back to 2000 so Vision was a waste of space. This didn't correct over time, so at the end of September I called up and an engineer came to test my line, swapped me to a new pair due to earthing issues and said I might want to replace my trusty old voyager. All this disruption still had negligible effect, so around Xmas I obtained a Home Hub 3.
Bad to worse - in the last week I have had to reboot the HH3 at least 5 times (so I'll never get to the end of my BRAS training period) and whereas before I could watch Iplayer etc. 95% of the time, now it seems incapable of streaming for more than half an hour, before the speed drops below an acceptable limit. I'm close to junking the HH3 and going back to the Voyager.
Is this normal? I've read about the HH3 dropping speeds on contention - am I seeing the issue because this makes my speed unusable? (A drop of 1Mb on an 8Mb speed might be annoying, but for me it's fatal!) or do I have a rogue hub .... in which case, what do I do?

Results fresh in as you'll see - internet froze again 20 minutes ago and forced ANOTHER reboot.
With regards to your standard questions - as you'll see from my earlier post, I had a BT engineer in with me for over 4 hours in September, so all the "normal" tests were done, internal wiring checked, quiet line test was done from the master socket, he even swapped me to a new pair with better earth. There are 3 extension and the NTE5, all filtered. .... oh and neighbours with another provider achieve 2K+ constantly.
I am not now connected to the NTE5, but the engineer cut the bell wire and it has an I-Plate anyway (belt & braces!). During tests with him and for 3 weeks after (without a reboot) the router was connected directly to the master socket and it made no difference, except weakening the wireless signal to my office. So I am again connected to my office extension socket, as before, and the move had no discernable effect on sync since October.
So I'm not really expecting much on sync,  live in a rural area, 2.5 clicks from the exchange (ADSL/POTS) but have a line length of over 4Km using the normal calcuation, probably with lovely aluminium along the way.
I'm just gobsmacked that the new Hub appears to be unfit for purpose, drops the download speed at the drop of a hat and freezes up on a regular basis .... so this is my final fling before jacking it and probably joining my neighbours with a provider who CAN offer an improvement.

  • Setting up bt home hub with airport extreme and timecapsule

    Hi I am running BT Broadband direct into a BT Home Hub (Black version) then ethernet into an airport extreme.
    Timecapsule then extending the apple network and an iMac ethernet into the timecapsule
    Various other macbooks, iPhones,iPads, iPods and apple tv wirelessly linked in. (and an hp multifunction printer)
    The network seems very slow and unstable - any suggestions on how to tune it?

    Introducing wireless repeater or bridge causes double hopping wireless. It greatly reduces speed and efficiency of wireless. I am not 100% sure I understand your arrangement. But there are limited wireless channels and the result of many wireless devices fighting each other is bad.
    1. Do you have wireless turned off in the Home Hub? Please do unless it is providing important connections.
    2. What mode is the AEBS running in? Because with BT you must use the home hub as a router, you should have the AEBS bridged. Is that the case?
    3. Wireless extending networking adds issues as stated. Get rid of this. The best method is to link the TC and AEBS by alternative.. ie ethernet is the best by huge margin. If you cannot do this in your house then use EOP adapters. They are not foolproof but if they work, they keep working with reliability and stabilty and speed that wireless cannot match. You can then run the AEBS and TC as roaming WAP, by using different channels but same SSID (wireless name), and security settings and passwords.

    I wonder if anyone can help me with this. I got my Home Hub 5 today to replaced my Home hub 3. Once I installed the home hub 5 all my wireless device has dropped to 10mb!
    I don"t know what else can I do coz I tried resetting the home hub 5 and change all the setting on the home hub 5 but still only give me 10mb!

    I have solved the problem why the speed has dropped down to 10 mb on wireless device!
    For anyone in the future that upgrade to the home Hub 5 I will like to mention the reason so they know what to do:
    Once you installed the home hub 5 , turn it on and add wireless device to it . When you open the browser on your wireless device Bt home hub will pop up the ' parental guide ' page for you to set up . You can set it up or click do not want it then it's will go back to the main web page !
    Because some of us who use apple device such as iphone don't use the browers and use the apps so didn't know that .
    So once you went through the parental guide page your bt speed on your device will went back to full speed !! All my wireless device went back to normal around 50 mb !!
    I hope the above statement will help who ever going to upgrade to home hub 5 soon and will notice why the speed drop so much and what is the reason for it and don't need to mess around with your home hub channel coz just the simple parental guide set up page need to finish the setting !'

  • Can I replace a home hub with a decent adsl modem?

    I have several PCs, laptops, an internet TV, a couple of apple TVs, ipads, phones etc in my house and am fed up with them not communicating properly.  
    So after reading how reliable they were, and given the fact I have somehow become an apple fanboi without meaning to, I opted for an airport extreme.
    The intention is to use this to create my wireless network & have the homehub just deal with the broadband... sadly it seems this is not possible. I can't disable the wireless on the homehub and supposedly I need to have it to deal with assigning IPs.
    I could live with this if it works, but it still causes issues - computer to computer communication is flawless, as I hoped, but the internet is patchy.
    I am sooo fed up with this it is not true - not including the time wasted with homeplug networking & airport express too - I want to bin the POS that is the home hub and have complete control over my setup. I don't need a stupid broadband phone and I don't use FON!
    Can I buy an adsl modem that does nothing except get my broadband into my airport extreme network?
    Alternatively is it worth me hassling BT until they give me a homehub 3 - is this any better?

    I did take a quick glance at the manual and it seemed to do what you need, but it may be worth taking a closer look yourself, its on the TP-Link website.
    The only issue I can possibly see, is the PPP authentication.
    Normally the home hub will authenticate internally using PPPoA, this will bring up the Internet connection.
    If you are using the TP Link as purely an ADSL modem, then your Airport Extreme will be authenticating using PPPoE.
    I am not 100% sure whether that will bring up the PPP session. It would certainly do on an Infinity connection, but I have never tried it on an ADSL only modem.
    I would imagine that is should work, as the modem will be bridging the connection from the ATM side.
    You can use a PPPoE user name of [email protected] and a password of bt

    I was wondering if it is possible to merge browser information from more than one Fire Fox device

    Sync uses a server to store your data for syncing multiple devices, it isn't a direct connection from one device to another device. I'm not sure there is a limit to the number of devices that can use the same sync account, I have had 5 devices on the same account without any problems.

  • CRC errors with non-home hub device

    Hey folks
    When I first replaced my dying BT Home Hub with a third party DSL modem, there were initially a lot of CRC errors and poor SNR ratios. I called BT Broadband support and the agent appeared to rectify the problem on by undertaking actions on BT's side. It was something like performing two line tests back-to-back -- I know sounds odd, but it worked and the the third party DSL modem worked happily for 6 months.
    This week the third party modem started reporting high numbers of CRC errors, much like when first connected, it works for a while then resets when the CRC error count overflows. I'm wondering if there is some other state on BT's side that could rectify the problem. I've spoke with two agents this week, and they had no idea what I was talking about (and I agree it sounds like voodoo).
    Any ideas on what the initial action was on BT's side that enabled the modem to work in the first place?

    The CRC errors accumulate until they hit a threshold and the device resets dropping the connection.
    The Home hub shows:

    The obvious difference is 3dB in line attenuation and noise margin. This was the case when I first connected the third party router before BT did the line reset that allowed the device to work. It has worked flawlessly for months.

    BTW, I don't want to appear unduly ornery, but BT tech support repeatedly ask on the telephone "why aren't you using HH2 we provided?".
    1) It randomly drops OS X wifi connections which makes me really unpopular in the house.
    2) It has poor wifi interaction with work lenovo laptop.
    3) It has no support for QoS provisioning so kids streaming video interferes with work.
    4) It has unreliable and undocumented USB storage, cf third-party solution which offers glitchless SMB and FTP.
    5) Printer support is undocumented (though works better than my third-party alternative :-) )
    My first HomeHub 2 had exactly the same issues before it died at which time I invested in a third party alternative. To credit BT they sent a refurbished replacement but this has all the same issues and a non-functioning reset switch.

  • Rebooting Home Hub

    Any issues reporting or disconnecting home hub for a while ?
    I'll be leaving the openreach router alone.. So I'm assuming it won't affect my connection etc.

    The sync speed is controlled by DLM.  The IP (BRAS) profile is set to match the sync speed when pppoe connection from router to exchange is established, eg when the router is restarted (or disconnected/reconnected).  Therefore the IP profile will change on router restart if the sync speed has changed since the last router reconnect.
    The speed you will get at any time is (approximately) the lower of the sync speed and IP profile.  Thus if the sync speed has dropped, the lowering of the IP profile won't lower your speed; it will already have been lowered by the lower sync speed.  If the sync speed has been raised, the reconnection will increase the profile and your speed will increase.  That is why it is worth disconnecting/reconnecting the router every day or so if you experienced a DLM speed drop and you are expecting it to increase again.
    In general, a reconnection of the router will always change your IP address.

  • Home Hub 3 - Connection dropping from N to G?

    Hello all; I hope someone can help me with this!
    I have recently installed the new Home Hub 3 (replacing a Home hub 1).  I have it connected by wifi to a Mac which has a built-in 802.11 connection.  The reason I changed to Home Hub 3 is that next month I am getting a digital box for the TV which works best using a 802.11 N connection speed.
    Normally, the connection is by 802.11 N (I can see this on the Mac SysInfo), and I get a solid 5 bar connection.  However, sometimes this drops to 1 or 2 bars, and the wifi speed drops from N to G.  When this happens, I cannot change it back to a N speed without rebooting.  
    Does anyone know what might be causing this?  It seems to be random.  The computer is not moving, and is only about 12 feet from the Home Hub with clear air in between.  Is it likely to be the Home Hub which is causing the change, or the Mac?  Is there anyway to "lock" the Homehub to only broadcast on N?

    the only problem changing the BT Home hub 3 wireless channel manually it stops the new software from finding the best channel one of the features of the new hub. they advise this in the product page details (section taken shown below).What i found was to experiment hub positions my example i have 3 story house so i placed the hub on the second floor away from fridge /microwave/ wireless phone etc on the 1st floor.  the wireless computers are on floor 2 & 3, it improved reception by 50%. the computer down on floor 1 is connected by ethernet.
    Change wireless channel
    Your Hub is always monitoring the wireless channel it’s using and if it detects too much 
    interference it will automatically change to another channel. If you want to manually 
    change to a channel of your choice, follow the steps below, but this will stop the 
    automatic channel selection feature. 
    1 Access Hub Manager by typing bthomehub.home into your web browser. 
    2 Click Settings.
    3 If asked, enter your Hub Admin password. You’ll find this on the bottom of your Hub.
    4 In the Basic Settings menu, click Change the wireless channel to avoid interference.
    5 Click the Refresh button.
    6 Wait a minute for your device to pick up the new channel.

  • Downloads slower than sync speed

    I got connected a few weeks ago an happy with the sync speeds. 73 Down 19.9 Up The problem is no matter what I download I can't go over 55Mbit I have done a few speedtests and can't get over 55Mbit. Is there something wrong with my router or the line? I'm have a DSL N68U.

    Exactly what I was thinking. I was under the impression that with the current set up and under normal conditions ADSL2+ should set the downstream IP Profile to 88.2% of downstream sync and VDSL2 should set it to 96.8% of downstream sync.
    Take my example. My line is capable of VDSL2 speeds of over 80Mbps. I'm on Infinity 1 so my downstream sync is capped at 40Mbps and my modem does sync at that. My downstream IP Profile is 38.72Mbps (exactly 96.8% of sync).

    Your stats show that your line is capable of 102.66Mbps. You are on Infinty 2 so your downstream sync has been capped at 80Mbps and in fact is currently synced at 73.46Mbps (possibly due to some slight noise on the line?).
    However your downstream IP Profile is 57.71Mbps which is only 78.6% of sync. When downloading data via the internet using IP you will not get a speed greater than this limit. That explains your test results.
    So the question that someone more knowledgeable might be able to answer is why the IP profile is set so low compared to sync speed?

  • Bt Home Hub can I connect?

    Can I and how do I connect to BT Home Hub with my Laptop when it is  one of the available connections when working away from home, It normaly asks for a Password.

    Unless they take their security key off which, in my view i don't see ANYONE Doing that. they might of if they don't have a key on their hub, so they are mad 

  • Nokia N86 problem connecting to BT Home Hub

    I am having problems connecting to my BT home hub with my new Nokia N86. I have used the WLAN wizard and entered the WEP code but when I go to connect I get the message 'Gateway could not be found'. I have been using it without any problems with my Nokia N95

    Have you looked at the hubs log to see if it gives a reason for refusing the N86?
    It's a while since I had the original hub so can't tell you exactly where to look.
    You may also want to ask your question on forum below as it's more likely the hub that needs it's settings changed than the phone:

  • Connecting hi-fi amp to home hub 4

    Hi, first time post, home somebody can help. 
    I've recently purchased a TEAC CR-H700DAB tuner/amplifier that should be able to connect wirelessly to my home computer(s) to stream recorded music. 
    When switching the device to the relevant function it displays "Network problem". 
    According to the YouTube clip at:

    ...the way to set up an initial connection is to switch the amp on (with its antenna raised) and check in your router to find the IP address of the new device - the example shown in the clip is a Netgear router, but I assume that the BT Home Hub ought to work in a similar way. However, the only devices it picks up are the two existing laptops. 
    I'm at an impasse! Any suggestions?

    Yes, I have the manual (although mine is slightly different). 
    When I follow that initial setup, I get as far as (on p. 34): 
    When you select "Wireless": 
    1. Turn the MULTI-JOG k-n-o-b [1] to select "Search AP", and then press the ENTER button. 
    2. Turn the MULTI-JOG k-n-o-b [1] to select the access oint to connect, and then press the ENTER button. 
    After (1) above, it says "Searching..." and then "Not Found" - which I assume means that it is not connecting to the Home Hub? 
    My laptop, which is in the same room, connects to the Home Hub with no problem. 
    [1] The forum software absurdly censors that word to **bleep** !!!

    i currently have a bt home hub with phone which is dead all the light are blue and everything works except the phone i have tried to reset it pulled all the cords out of the back but still nothing i have noticed over the past 3 wks that it does -not hold its charge now there nothing no-t ev-en a -li-ght o-n the phone. this is my only telephone in the house so i am unable to contact bt can anyone help me

    Try replacing the rechargable batteries in the hub phone, they normally only last about two years, unless you are very lucky.
    As quick test, you can but a couple of ordinary alkaline batteries in the phone just to prove the fault, but do not attempt to charge them by putting the phone in the base holder.

    The ad must not appear again in its current form. We told BT not to repeat the claim "The UK's most reliable wireless connection” in future unless they provided adequate evidence to substantiate it, or qualified the basis in which the claim was made.
    BT, have you provided adequate evidence to the ASA to substantiate this, or qualified the basis in which the claim was made?
