HOME HUB AND TIME CAPSULE WIRELESS CONNECTION

hi,
i have recently moved house and have BT broadband and Sky TV. The point where the master socket comes into my house is in an upstairs bedroom, well away from my living room where the TV is... So i'm wondering if its possible to have the Home Hub in the bedroom and then connect my apple time capsule wirelessly to it, then run ethernet from the TC to my Sky box for downloading TV etc. I may need to move the BT master socket to the living room, but hoping to find a workaround.
I have read some of the forums about bridging etc, but im not sure if this will solve the issue.
Any help would be appreciated!
Cheers

Since you, effectively, have two routers in series you will want to reconfigure the downstream router (the TC in this case) as a bridge to allow the upstream router (BT HomeHub) to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all wired & wireless clients.
To set up the Time Capsule (TC) as a bridge, either connect to the TC's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the TC, and then, using the AirPort Utility, change this setting:
Internet - Internet Connection tab
o Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode)
o Click Update to apply the new settings.

  • G4 imac and time capsule wireless connection

I have a dual band time capsule working wirelessly with 3 macs all intel (24 iMac, mbp 13, mb 13) with no issues. I was trying to connect a 17" flat panel G4 to the same wireless network on the time capsule and it fails to see the network.
When I type in the network name and password (WPA) it comes back with "encryption method not supported by the wireless network". Although all the others macs are working on this same network using the same encryption, the old iMac refuses to play nice. Is there something else I've overlooked?
This G4 has been on a various wireless networks over the past 5 years. It is running 10.4.11 and I know it will not support time machine, but still hoping it can share the wireless network.
    Thanks

    James,
You need to configure the Time Capsule to "join" the wireless network that is being provided by the Netgear router. The Time Capsule will connect using wireless only in this type of configuration.
Then, the Netgear, Time Capsule and your computer will all be on the same wireless network and you will not have to "switch" networks to access the Internet or back up to the Time Capsule.
Before we make any changes, we want to make sure that you understand that the Time Capsule will not perform any routing functions when it is configured to "join a wireless network".
The Ethernet ports on the  Time Capsule are not enabled in this setup, therefore you will not be able to use Ethernet to back up to the Time Capsule. Backups will be over wireless only, which is significantly slower than an Ethernet connection.
This setup can be tricky because you must know the exact type of wireless security that the Netgear router is using in order to provide the correct settings to the Time Capsule.
If the Time Capsule does not receive the correct settings during setup, you will receive a message that there has been an error and you must start all over again with a complete factory default reset of the Time Capsule and try again.
So, before we go any further, we need to ask....what is the exact type of wireless security that your Netgear router is using?

  • Which home hub gives the best wireless connection?

Hello, I have the old home hub 1.0 (BT Total broadband option 3) and I am thinking about a wireless connection. Apparantly this home hub does have wireless ability but do the more recent hubs allow a better wireless connection?
    Thanks

The HH1 is fine, it really depends on what range you expect, as all of the home hubs have the same power output.

  • Do Airport Extreem and Time Capsule support connect restrictions?

I've looked over the manuals for Airport Extreem and Time Capsule and can't see if (or how) these devices support connect restrictions such as:
    1) Prevent certain devices from connecting (i.e. via MAC address)
    2) Allow/Prevent access at specific times of the day.
Do these devices provide these types of services?

    1) Prevent certain devices from connecting (i.e. via MAC address)
Yes, but only for wireless devices.
    2) Allow/Prevent access at specific times of the day.
Yes, but only for wireless devices. You can set up rules for each day of the week if you want. The example below shows Weekdays and Weekends

  • Time Capsule wireless connection through Netgear connection

I am now using a Netgear N300 Gigabite modem/router as my main access point (internet et al). However, I want to continue to use my Time Capsule as a wireless drive.
I'm not sure what I should set the Netgear and Time Capsule so that the Time Capsule does not interfere with the Netgear internet connection. Right now that is what it is doing. I have to set the Time Capsule to bridge and connect to it separately.
So, is there a way to access the TC hard drive through the Netgear wirelessly?
i.e. with my laptop I want to stay connected to the Netgear and have internet access but also be able to connect to TC through that Netgear connection.
I don't want to ethernet the TC to the NG. I have my TC ethernet connected to my iMac. So I need to have the NG and TC cooperating wirelessly.

  • New to Apple and Time Capsule Wireless

I am a new apple customer.  I just bought my 1st iMac and I am trying to make the total break from MS.
I have mediacom as my ISP and my present wireless router is a Linksys WRT600n (purchased about 3 years ago).  With this system I have had problems with coverage in my house as well as needing to reboot the device often.
The router is located in a 1st floor bedroom and I get spotty coverage in the living room and even more spotty service in the adjacent kitchen.  The distances away from the router as the crow flies is 24 feet for the living room (involves 4 interior walls) plus 15 more feet (an another wall) to the kitchen.  Since we use our wireless system more in our living room and our bedroom (this is only 12 feet away and 1 interior wall), I have decided to move the wireless router to the living room and place it on top of a entertainment center.  My thinking is that it will provide better coverage to the areas where we use it (hoping to use Apple TV in both living room and bedroom).
This leads me to my question: what has been the experience of the time capsule community in regards to time capsule wireless coverage and reliability?
Also, please note that the iMac will be located in the same bedroom where I will be removing the current router and as such, the wireless backup capabilities of the time capsule will need to traverse the same 24 feet and 4 interior walls.
Any feedback will be most appreciated.

The reliability of the Apple Extreme is very good.. TC much less good. 3years is often a failure point for stuff that runs too hot. Like your WRT600N and the TC with its Green Drive and internal power supply.
On wireless range though I would say pretty ordinary. I have tested all the generations of the TC and most of the Extreme.. including Gen5. In my double storey house with an old G wireless modem router (downstairs extreme end).. right near the TC/AE whichever I am running.. from the other end of the house (upstairs) the old G wireless gives more than adequate signal to get full speed internet.. the TC does not.. And 5ghz goes pretty much to the next room and then disappears but that is as expected.
Use the tests here to find what give good range.
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/58-2_4-ghz-dn (you can change the chart to give speed in the worst location ie F http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/58-2_4-ghz-dn?see=P_F
Airport extreme is there. Well down but there.

  • HT201068 Updated Remote Desktop Admin 3.8 and now my Time Capsule wireless connection is slow

I recently updated to Remote Desktop Admin 3.8 and since then, I have had issues with the wireless connection from my Time Capsule.
    1) I reset modem and had no change. 2) I then plugged the ethernet directly into my Mac and the connection was great so it's not the service or modem.
    3) I hard reset the TC and when it came back, the speed was good but went back down after a few minutes. 4) Plugged ethernet directly into Mac and again, the speed was great so it is definitely the TC.
Would love some help resolving this. Hoping I don't have to get a new wireless router. Maybe the TC is too old? I purchased it in 2009 or 2010/ Current version 7.6.4

Most home routers running 24/7 are good for about 3years.. your TC has now managed to survive 6 years.. it is well and truly time for a replacement. Simple fact is, it should be dead by now.. so you are living on borrowed time whatever happens.
Why RDA would slow the wireless I am not sure..
Are you running Yosemite.. ?? I tend to point the finger at the OS rather than an application.. mind you if the amount of data going back and forth has increased.. what appears to be slower wireless might actually be something else.
Apple has reasonable wireless analyser built into the OS since mountain lion.. it is well worth using.
    http://osxdaily.com/2012/07/31/wi-fi-scanner-mac-os-x-mountain-lion/
I recommend doing a few things like short names, no spaces pure alphanumeric for everything in networks. Passwords also must comply. Apple made changes to network protocols since Mavericks but did not fix the names being recommended in the airport utility.. and still haven't which break their own rules.
And fix names for bands differently so you can force the connection.. plus setting channels.
However in a unit of that age.. it will have pretty weak 5ghz and that is what is important for high speed wireless.. Apple have hindered 2.4ghz since forever.

  • Linking Bt home hub to Time capsule

    Hi everyone,
I have a Bt Home Hub 2.0 at home, however the wireless coverage isnt very strong throughout the house I am looking at buying a time capsule and connecting it to my hub to back up work. I was wondering if I did connect the capsule to my home hub can it be used to extend my wireless connection and improve the signal strength and how would I go about doing this?
    Thanks
    Chopper23

I was wondering if I did connect the capsule to my home hub can it be used to extend my wireless connection and improve the signal strength and how would I go about doing this?
You would need to establish a permanent wired Ethernet connection from one of the LAN <-> ports on the HomeHub to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the Time Capsule.
Using the AirPort Utility application, you would configure the Time Capsule to "Create a wireless network" using the exact same name, exact same security settings and same password as your HomeHub network.
AirPort Utility will suggest using "Bridge Mode" during the configuration, which would be the correct setting to use with the HomeHub.

  • Sky (UK) Hub and Time Capsule

I have been using a Time Capsule for a couple of years, with wired ADSL and a wired connection to my iMac, with Wifi for iPhones in the home. No prospect of getting Fibre anytime soon, so switched ISP to Sky which is the only LLU provider locally and promised better speed for streaming etc.
Sky Hub set up today, and after a bit of fiddling, have managed to get it working with an immediate improvement in speed from about 6 to 18Meg. But the only way I can get it working is to use the Sky Hub with a wirelsss connection. However, Time Machine is unable to connect to the Tiem Capsule right now and the ornage light on the TC is winking away forlornely.
What I would like is for the ADSL conection to go into the Sky Hub, which operates as a modem, through to the Time Capsule which acts as the router and provides the Wifi signal to the home (and a few Airpoer Expresses) and takes the wired Time Machine backup.
Can anyone advise the correct settings on the Sky Hub and the Time capsule? Thanks!

I am not sure what you are backing up.. CCC is a great software .. Runs rings around TM for reliability.
Anyway no factory reset of the TC causes loss of data on its hard disk.. just so you know.
You cannot delete data on the hard disk without deliberate action via finder to delete the file/folder or using erase from the airport utility.
    Martin Toal wrote:
I didn't do a full reset, but I didn't do it when I got the Sky Hub a couple of weeks ago either.
The fact that you didn't do the full reset first time around.. does not mean it is not required the second time.. this is recommended whenever you make major network changes. The TC simply remembers too much.

  • Time capsule wireless connectivity

I've got a two story house. The Time Capsule is upstairs, but my Macbook, only 20 feet away downstairs, has a weak signal. Any ideas on how I can maximize the signal?

    rufsak,
    Try these...
*_Time Capsule Weak Signal Strength / Dropped Connections_*
Forgive the size of the post, but the suggestions below have helped others with similar issues. Try each topic individually and see if things improve, If not move on to the next one.
    *Keep the Time Capsule Cool*
Some posters have observed that when they positioned the Time Capsule for better ventilation and cooling, their network connectivity issues resolved themselves. Also avoid locating the devise within poorly ventilated cabinets or piling items around or on top of it.
    *Time Capsule Orientation*
While the location you chose to setup your Time Capsule may be acceptable, but the direction it is oriented can have an effect on signal strength. It appears that the signal of the Time Capsule does not radiate equally from all sides of the devise.
The antennas within the devise are positioned along the 3 smooth sides. That is, there is no antenna on the side bearing the ports and cables. As a result, position the devise with the ports and cables AWAY from the direction of most of the clients that will be connecting to it.
    *Cordless Phones*
Some users have discovered that the cordless phones they have in the home occupy or are near the same bandwidth as their wireless network (2.4Ghz or 5Ghz). Try temporarily disabling the handsets and their bases and see if network connectivity improves. If so you may need to change the channel that the phone uses or purchase phones that occupy a different bandwidth.
    *Proximity To Other Devices*
One poster observed: “Finally have full access, full speed, and full functionality. Initially I installed the Time Capsule at the location of my cable, cable modem... which of course was next to my HDTV, DVD, Apple TV, Amplifier, etc. Get the picture? After about 4 weeks of starts and stops, resets and repeated initial backups, I moved the unit to another location, closer to my Mac, and in an area where there are no other electronics. Now, it runs perfect.” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1734818&tstart=0]
    *Change Firewall Settings* #
Go to System Preferences --> Security.
    Click the Firewall tab.
Change setting to “Set access for specific services and applications”.
The System will now ask you when each process wants to penetrate the firewall. Once you click “Allow” each time you are asked, it will be saved in the pane at the bottom of this window and it should never ask you again.
One poster observed, “Since I made this change, my wireless has been strong and Time Machine works like a champ and the impact on my network performance is minimal. I speculate that the change in performance is due to security protocols or services that run in the 'allow all incoming connections' and 'allow only essential services' modes. Whatever the reason this fix has worked for me for over 2 months without resetting my airport connection or time capsule.” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8348496#8348496]
    *Change Time Capsules’ Channel*
    Launch Airport Utility.
Select the device on the left.
    Click "Manual Setup."
    Select “Airport” in the toolbar.
    Click the "Wireless" tab.
If “Channel” is set to “Automatic” try changing to a different one. Holding the Option key down and clicking the drop-down menu should provide more channels to choose from. If you have another wireless router operating, ensure that each devices’ channels are as far apart as possible.
    Click “Update”.
    Close Airport Utility.
    *Preferred Networks & Airport Services*
You may be experiencing interference from other networks in your neighborhood. When you click the Airport menu are there other networks listed other than your own?
If so, is your network at the top of the list? It should be.
Go to System Preferences --> Network --> Select Airport on the left.
Click "Advanced". In the “Airport” tab note the various local wireless networks that Airport detects. Is the network you prefer to connect to at the top of the list? If not drag it to the top. Are there other networks you never intend to connect to (an old work network, or a neighbors network)? Then highlight them and click the "-" button.
Make sure “Remember any network this computer has joined” is checked.
    Click "OK".
For "Network Name" be sure your network is selected and then click "Apply".
Is Airport (wireless) your primary means of connecting to your network? If so, is Airport at the top of the list of services on the left? It should be.
Click the small “Gear” button at the bottom of the window and select “Set Service Order”.
Now drag Airport to the top of the list.
    Click “OK”. Click “Apply”.
Now see if network connectivity has improved.
    *Transmit Power & Wide Channels*
If you are using the 802.11n only (5GHz) radio mode, you can also select to use wide channels, which provide higher data throughput in your network.
    Launch Airport Utility
Select your Time Capsule on the left.
    Click “Manual Setup”.
    Select “Airport” in the toolbar.
    Click the “Wireless” tab.
Click “Wireless Options...” at the bottom of the window.
Adjust the “Transmit Power” to 100%.
Put a check mark in the box labeled “Use Wide Channels”. (If you are using a 802.11a/b/g (2.4GHz) radio mode then select “Interference Robustness”)
    Click “Done”.
Click “Update” in the lower right hand corner.
Wait for the Time Capsule to restart and then see if your network speeds improve.
    *Faulty Airport Card*
One poster reported: “I reckoned the fault must be with the Macbook;s hardware so touch the plunge and got a new airport card fitted to my Macbook and now everything is working fine. At last I have a working Macbook!” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1719326&tstart=0]
Let us know if any of the above helped improve your situation.

  • Time Capsule wireless connection to DGN1000

Hi there, what I'd like to do is... Connect my Time Capsule (upstairs) to my Netgear DGN1000 router (downstairs) wirelessly! Therefore increasing my wireless range, and allowing me ethernet ports upstairs, instead of sharing my Macs airport connection via ethernet.
    Thanks, Adam

It's also quite a long distance for an ethernet cable
the ethernet cable will work fine for 100M.. and I doubt it is that far.
In the end the actual cost to install ethernet between two levels of the house can be well repaid with reliable connections.. and fast. Everything else.. whether wireless bridging or EoP are simply trying to do what ethernet does but less well.. less fast.. less reliably.
After trying wireless repeaters and bridges doing video streaming.. for ages.. and getting it to work really well.. until the gremlins get in.. ie it runs perfectly for 49 minutes of a 55min show and will then begin to glitch.. It was like clockwork.. if the show was a 2 hour film it would not glitch until 1hour 50min. Running ethernet fixed it permanently.. then you can just plug in wireless AP at those points you need wireless.
The hassle for people who rent though is not being able to do this so EOP is the best alternative.. and work well generally but still depends on the standard of wiring.. and type of breakers used in fuse box if they are on different circuits in the house. As Bob says.. make sure the store allows returns if they don't work well or at all.

  • BT Home Hub and Airport Express Issues

    Hello all
I am having major issues setting up my airport express to my home hub and also setting up Time Capsule to join my wireless network...
I really need a step by step guide if possible.
    Can anyone help please?
    Thanks
    PC

    Welcome to the discussions!
You told us that you were having "major issues", but did not tell us specifically how you are trying to configure the AirPort Express, or what service you want it to perfrom on your Home Hub network, so providing a step by step guide is not possible without a bit more information.
Can you clarify on this, please?
In regards to configuring your Time Capsule to "join" the Home Hub wireless network, do you understand that the ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are not enabled in this type of configuration, so you will not have the option to back up large files or make initial backups using an ethernet connection?
In order for the Time Capsule to "join" the wireless network provided by the Home Hub router, you willl need to know (or be able to locate) the exact type of wireless security settings that your Home Hub is using. The Time Capsule must be provided with this information in order for it to "join" the wireless network successfully.
Can you provide this information, or if you do not know, check with your service provider to obtain this information? We cannot proceed with the configuration until we have this information.
If you are able to locate the Time Capule near your Home Hub and establish a permanent ethernet connection between the Home Hub and Time Capsule, you will be able to backup using the Home Hub wireless network and also have the option to backup using ethernet if you wish. In addition, this type of installation is much simpler to configure (and more reliable in operation in my experience) and we would not need to know the type of wireless security that the Home Hub uses if you choose this setup option.
Please post back when you have an opportunity.

  • Airport Express with BT Home Hub and Xbox 360

    Hi,
I know this is kind of an out there question, but im looking into buying an airport express and i was wondering if there was a way that the Airport express could connect to my existing wireless network (BT Home Hub) and share that internet connection over ethernet to my xbox 360.
My xbox is in another room and i cannot connect it to the router. I have been reading about WDS and client mode but it all goes over my head. can anyone explain if this is possible with the airport express even though i dont have an apple base station?
Im also wondering if Airtunes would work for my speaker system. Any help is appreciated!

    Welcome to the discussions!
"i was wondering if there was a way that the Airport express could connect to my existing wireless network (BT Home Hub) and share that internet connection over ethernet to my xbox 360."
Possibly. You would need to check to see if the BT Home Hub was compatible with what is called ProxySTA. Otherwise, the ethernet port on the Express will not function.
WDS would not be compatible with your BT. Even if it were, the wireless network bandwidth would be reduced by 50%. Not what you want for gaming.
Assuming your BT is a router with ethernet ports, you absolute best connection for any application, but especially gaming is an ethernet cable.
If this is not feasible, look at ethernet power line adapters. One adapter plugs into the AC socket at the router end and the other plugs into an AC socket near the 360. The adapters use the AC wiring in your home to transport the ethernet signal. This is almost as good as a straight ethernet cable and far better than wireless for gaming.
The Express would be able to join the wireless network of the BT router for use with AirTunes.

  • Connecting time capsule wirelessly to BT home hub

Help unable to set up time capsule to wirelessly join my BT home hub (original white home hub for use in UK). Goes through all the stages then when restarts can't find airport device. Took it to local genius bar and worked fine there. Is this a problem peculiar to home hubs?

ESM@ESM, welcome to the discussion area!
In order to "Join a wireless network", you need to know the exact type of wireless security that your BT Home Hub is using, so you can provide those settings to the Time Capsule. It cannot join your network unless you have the correct settings.
It would be much easier to configure your Time Capsule to connect to your Home Hub using an ethernet cable. This will still allow you to use your Home Hub wireless network for backups, and you'll also have the option to use ethernet for backups, which will allow you to backup much more quickly. Can you consider that option?
