Home hub switch on/off?

Ive read that the small plug in wall transformers that power mobile phone chrgers etc & the bt home hub are a source of fire. Should I always switch off whin Im not using my computer? ( I always do actually!) & if this is correct, how would anyone be able to sit in their car outside my home & connect using BT fon  via my home hub?
Im actually bemused by the idea of this anyway as I cant connect to a laptop in another ROOM within my house let alone sit in a car in the road outside & get a wifi connection! LOL!

As for losing access to FON/BT Openzone if you opt out, this is not the case, it just means your hub won't be transmitting an Openzone/FON hotspot so you and anyone else wouldn't be able to connect to your hub  through FON/Openzone. You'd still connect to your personal Wi-Fi connection and you'd still have access to other hotspots as part of your BT contract.
If you don't get a good signal whilst at home try setting a manual channel on the hub or moving the hub to a different location (if practical).
I you opt out of BTFON then your hub will no longer transmit the BTFON/OPENZONE wifi signal but by opting out you will no longer be able to access BTFON/OPENZONE when out and about,  You can still access any free hotspots provided by coffee houses/hamburger shops etc

  • Home Hub 3, Turning OFF Fon.

Hi, I have just aqquired a brand new home hub 3 but noticed the FON is turned on. I turned this off with my home hub 2 as I can't see why I should have to share my connection with other people as part of BT's ever expanding WIFI community.
I wouldn't mind so much if I could have FTTC/H but I am stuck on a pathetic 4.5mbps, which is just less than 3 when the wife is watching BTV On Demand.
Is it possible to turn it off on the hub 3 or have those leeches at BT Retail made it so you can't?

  • Turning off Home Hub 3

When I was on ADSL it was best not to switch off the Home Hub 3. This was because the exchange equipment might see the line as unreliable, and hence increase the noise margin and reduce the synch speed.
With Infinity, the modem is separate from the HH3. Can I switch off the HH3 whenever I like, without affecting how the exchange views the line?

That does not actually answer my question.
Is the exchange aware when the Home Hub is turned off?
Clearly if the modem is turned off, then the exchange will see it.
So my question was just about turning off the HH3.
No.... It's the Modem you have to be careful about.
I mentioned the Modem situation in THIS POST.
And confirmed a two week turn off of both items for holiday was OK HERE.
Message #2 HERE from Pippincp also confirms "The HH3 can be turned off at any time"

  • Internet constantly dropping off Home Hub 3

    Hi All
Hoping that someone can assist me as I am about to give up on BT and move to Virgin due to having unuseable Broadband.
I have had issues for some weeks now and spoke to BT who said there was an issue on the line and then arranged after a long wait of over a week for them to test the line, come out and then fix the issue.  The home hub was dropping off and the orange light would come on .  SInce they have fixed this issue the blue lights are on the home hub but i still have issue with internet constantly cutting out.
I am using Windows 8 and have my home hub near the TV.
Basically the itnernet keeps dropping out and when i look the Home Hub connection on windows 8 will show either no connection at all or limited connection.  I then have to reset it or disconnect it and the sign in again and it works again but only for a few minutes.  It can drop off every few minutes so is in effect totally unuseable.
Any suggestions as to what this may be.

as it is probably your wifi that is dropping and not your internet you can try downloading inssider3 (istumbler if MAC) and then run it. This will show the broadcasting networks round about you and their channels including your own. If you then enter your router and change your wireless channel to a free or less congested channel.

  • But I'm Not using my BT home hub for wifi

I received an email after registering (and loging on to BTWIFI to test) which said...
"Please keep your BT Home Hub switched on for the next few days so we can add you to the network."
The thing is I do not use my BT Home Hub 3 for Wifi anymore. After a frustrating Saturday not being able to pick up a wifi signal in certain important spots in my house (kitchen table, bedroom etc.), I atempted to get the Home Hub 3 to recognise Apple's Airport Expresses to extend the wifi network. This does not work, so I switched off the HH3 Wifi and use it as a router only. I connected my own Wifi router with extenders and now I have a fast and near perfect signal in all corners of the house. No dropouts at all.
So, will this stop me benefiting from BT unlimited wifi hotspots?

    Devon_Dave wrote:
Correct, your non BT router will not radiate BT Wifi only your own SSID
    @DD But the Hub3 will!
"so I switched off the HH3 Wifi and use it as a router only".
The hub, once the BTWifi update has been sent, will start to transmit the BTWifi SSID's.

  • Question re switching data off abroad but using Wi-Fi

I bought an 8900, as it had wi-fi, and I had assumed when I switched data off when roaming, I would be able to use wi-fi to connect to the internet.
Just tried an experiment at home, and switched data off under mobile network options, connected to my home network via wi-fi, and tried to use my browser. I then got an error message saying couldn't connect to the internet.
Is there anyway to accomplish what I am trying to do? I use Gmail for mail, so had assumed I'd be able to switch off my data package while roaming, and just connect to Gmail via the web using wi-fi when abroad.
    TIA

yes... absolutely yess... it will work i tried it and it works... switched off my Mobile Network(GSM) and tried to connect on a wifi hotspot voila! i can send & received email use all BB Application such as BB Mesenger and Yahoo messenger,
Now the question is "switching data off abroad but using Wi-Fi" yes it should work and it is documented Accessing BlackBerry Data Services Using Wi-Fi Networks
All you need is an internet connection thru WIFI
    1. A Wi-Fi connection profile must be added for each hotspot or home Wi-Fi network.
Wi-Fi connection profiles can easily be configured via the Set Up Wi-Fi wizard. The
correct service set identifier (SSID), security type, security key or credentials are
necessary for this configuration. Additionally, hotspot users may need to have
additional credentials or agree to the hotspot provider’s terms and conditions for use.
These can be entered when using the Set Up Wi-Fi wizard.
    2. In most cases, no other additional configuration will be necessary. Once connected,
authenticated, and authorized to use the hotspot or home Wi-Fi network, all
provisioned BlackBerry data services should be available. This is accomplished by
establishing an SSL connection via port 443 to the BlackBerry Infrastructure
but one thing im not sure if the data plan or packages are consumed also or does it affect my BIS data plan

  • I am using BT Broadband home hub and want to use my time machine - Can I turn the wireless router off in TM?

    Hi,
I have BT home hub which is now my main router in the house.  I also have Apple TV which works off the router and a network adapter around the house which is perfect for all my needs.  However, I also have a time machine but haven't used it for a while now as it's internal router overrides my current network which causes problems.
Being that i'm not very 'technical' I was hoping someone could give me a  'guide for dummies' instruction on how to turn off the wireless signal inside my time capsule without messing up the BT router?
    Many thanks in advance
    Alex

    Thanks guys,
Sorry, just to clarify, I need to connect the ethernet cable to my home hub and my TC first before i can do this?
And once i've done this will my stuff be backed up via the cable or wireless?
I know these are probably very stupid questions but like I said, i'm a div when it comes to this stuff!
    Alex

  • Is turning off a Home Hub a valid reason for very ...

The BT Technical people, are trying to resolve my problem of very slow broadband speeds, and part of their stated reason is that I used to turn off my Hub every time I'd logged off (I don't now!), with the automatic monitoring software detecting this as repeated faults & re-setting my profile to deliver progressively slower speeds "until it gets a stable broadband connection".
Is this true?  I can find nothing in the user guides for the Home Hub 3 they've very recently sent to me, nor anywhere else on BT sites, telling users they must leave their Hub turned on 24/7.

Which "Hub instructions" would those be?  BT technical people sent me a new Hub 3, which came with no paper manuals, no cd etc.  When I finally tracked down Hub 3 manuals on BT.Com, none of them refer to leaving the Hub on permanently, only to leaving it on 24/7 for the first few days after BT Broadband is enabled until it "settles down".  Since my connection was enabled over 2 years ago, that clearly was never the issue - nor did anyone from BT tell me to leave the Hub on 24/7 when I moved to this house!  Nor is the requirement in my original Hub's manuals..
I'm just curious as to how a user is supposed to know about this "leave it on" rule, and the consequences (automatically reduced speeds) if you don't.

Place iPhone on Wall Charger for at least 10 minutes. Then keep on charger and Reset, hold both home and power buttons until the iPhone begins to start, this can take about 20 seconds of holding both buttons while on charger. If still problem, open iTunes 10.7 on computer, connect iPhone to computer with USB Cable, hold both home and power buttons for about 20 seconds until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode, then click Restore button of iTunes. If still problem, try DFU Mode Restore, here are the steps. Open iTunes on computer. Connect iPhone to computer with USB cable. Hold both Home and Power buttons, after exactly 10 seconds release the Power Button, keep holding the Home button until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode, usually about 20 seconds time. If the iPhone screen is black, blank this is DFU Mode. Click the Restore button of iTunes. DFU Mode can be difficult to enter sometimes, just keep trying. DFU Mode is a black, blank screen with iTunes saying Recovery Mode. If still problem and there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation and take to Apple for resolution.

  • Gigabit switch and home hub

    Hi,
Can anyone with a similar setup let me know if this will work, I'm due to have BT installed next month and due to where the sockets are located in my house compared to the current Virgin setup I'm going to have to do a bit of re-wiring so was wondering if anyone knows if this will work.
Devices on my home network are in two main locations and I'm trying to minimise the number of long cable runs.
Could I have in one location:
    - The home hub and modem
    - Connected via cat5 a linux server to the home hub
In a second location I have
    - things like TV, media streaming box etc
Would it be possible to run a cat5 cable to a switch like this http://www.netgear.co.uk/business/products/switches/unmanaged-desktop-switches/gs108.aspx from the home hub
And would devices on the switch be able to see my linux box? My thinking is that the swich will autosense an uplink to the hub and let the hub provide things like dhcp.
Hopeing its not that mad a setup and someone has something similar!

There is no reason why this should not work but there are a few things to look out for:
    1. You will need a crossover cable between the hub and the switch unless either device supports auto MDIX (the ability to detect what is on the other end of the cable and switch to either crossover or straight as required).
    2. Speed and duplex issues are often an issue in mixed vendor environments. Setting everything to "auto" on both ends is not always the best bet as autonegotiation often fails. Best to "hard set" both ends to 1000 full duplex if possible.
As for the DHCP bit, assuming the stuff above is setup correctly then DHCP should work fine and your other devices should be able to see your linux server assuming you have setup the IP address correctly.

Maybe reboot your router. Unplug it for about 30 seconds or so and then plug it back in. Reboot your iPad while the router is powering up.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

my phone froze so i switched it off using the power button and home. now everytime it switches on, it wont go past the apple screen??

    Hello 3m4nz4,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help with your device. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice for the issue you are experiencing:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on - Apple Support
Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch may occasionally stop responding to buttons, switches, or touchscreen input and may exhibit one or more of these symptoms:
Does not return to the Home screen after you press the Home button
Does not wake from sleep after you press the Sleep/Wake button
Does not turn on (or power on) when you press any button
Does not start up past Apple logo
    Appears frozen or unresponsive
Is unable to "Slide to Unlock" or "Slide to Power Off"
    To troubleshoot these symptoms:
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
