Home laser printer printing questions

Hi,
I want to by a laser printer for home. Heed help from those who have experience:
I have local network, so I can either use USB with print server or network printer. I found that CUPS drivers are required for network printing (print server) in OS X. Is it true? Are there other caveats? Network ready printers are more expensive.
I need to print maps, like orienteering maps. Will 600x600 dpi be sufficient?
There is a photopaper for laser printers in the local computer store. However, people say that cheap laser printers will not produce smooth gradient of halftones. What quality can I expect from laser printer + photopaper (designed for laserprints)?
Does postscript support influence quality? There are OS X compatible printers (have OS X driver) that seem to use PCL or just emulate postscript, is it essential?
Thank you for any input.

Thank you for the input
I'd expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $400 to have a nice home laser printer
I have color and b/w printers at work and most of my reading can be fit into my duties as I am a researcher at the university. I need to print last minute materials, mostly schemes/maps or addresses when I am off to some trip. I think that with the infrequent load the ink will get dry in an ink printer and the price of ink scares me too. I expect $200
It may have USB, but Ethernet would be a must for may list.
Why? I have an older Mac with OS X, it can serve the printer to the outer world. What are the caveats? If it gets broken I can connect USB printer anywhere (iBook).
I wouldn't use it to print photo-grade images with.
Have you tried photopaper for laser printers??
All "applications" produce postscript output. Drivers, when required, convert
the postscript to the page language required for the specific printer model
(like PCL for many HP printers, or ESC P/2 for many Epsons, etc). Postscript
printers all have a postscript interpreter built into the hardware - to take
input and create an image of the printed page.
I was thinking if a printer has a postscript interpeter, and OSX is sending
data to it from the open application, doesn't that mean OSX is sending
postscript data to the printer since it touches the data last as it leaves the
Mac?
I think, that there are printers that understand PS and that means that you can send PS file to the printer in a raw mode (lpr -l) and it will be printed. In the same way there are PCL printers that you can send raw PCL file to. PCL file is a usual windows .prn file when you “print to file” on HP printer. The GDI printer understand no language, so that all should be passed through the driver (and GDI will work with OS X or Linux only if there is a driver for OS X).
Here I repeat my Q: I heard that PCL overoptimize PS data upon conversion and thus reduce the print quality. Is it true?
I recently bought a Brother HL-2040 to be shared at a lab at school. I got it
in part because it comes with CUPS drivers. I already had a very old and
cheap print server, and I'm able to print to it from PCs and OS X Macs in the
lab, via LPD or appletalk. It's 600x600 dpi and excellent quality - we only
use plain paper. I think it would be good for orienteering, too. Pretty darn
good for a $100 printer!
Thank you. I also though that 600x600 will be sufficient. Is this 1200x1200 a sort of marketing trick?

I have an Ipad and Iphone but I don't have an Airprint at home but only a WIFI printer, my question is if I connect the wifi printer to Airport express, can I print from Ipad and Iphone ? Please help me if anyone knows about this.

Unfortunately, connecting a non-AirPrint-enabled printer to an AirPort base station's USB port will not make it AirPrint-ready.
You will need to use another solution, like Printopia, to be able to print to this printer from an iOS device.

  • My HP 3015 laser jet printer is 220V. How can I run it on household 110V ?

I got a brand new HP P3015 laser jet printer.  Because they are a fast printer, they pull a lot of power to keep the fusers happy.  In fact, the printer I got is a 220V model and it is not happy on just 110V household current.  How can I convert it to 110V?  Or, how can I feed it 220V worth of power at home?

  • Home Network and printer sharing with XP and Vista

I have a home network and printer wired on my PC desktop which runs XP.  My Vista laptop has been connected to internet and printer through the home network for past 6 years flawlessly.  However, since October my Vista laptop cannot
connect to the network printer, but internet has been working fine.
I've tried to uninstall/reinstall, update drivers, connect via TCP/IP but printer isn't located by add printer wizard.  When I plug printer directly into laptop via USB it works fine.  I also have tried another xp desktop in the house
and that cannot locate the printer also.     Help!
    Thanks in advance,
    Medic

  • A Print workflow question

I outsource my printing using the "Print to File" option in the Print Module. My workflow is straight forward: Import, Image Editing (using the Develop Module) and Printing (Print to File). I sharpen my images during the Image Editing phase using the Develop sharpening tool. I use a calibrated Monitor to makes sure that I am seeing a representative image on my screen. In the Print Module (under Print Job) I can select an option “Print Sharpening” (low, standard and high).
Question: Does does the “Print Sharpening” negate my sharpening settings in the Develop Module? If not, what is the difference between the two sharpening tools?

Print Sharpening (often also called output sharpening) work in combination with the capture sharpening you set in the Develop module. This constitutes 2/3 of the sharpening workflow concept by Bruce Fraser see: Out of Gamut: Thoughts on a Sharpening Workflow
The aim of the capture sharpening in the Develop module is to regain the loss of apparent sharpness cause by the optical system and the sensor. The goal is to have the image "look good" at 1:1. If properly accomplished, the Print Sharpening combines with the capture sharpening to sharpen for the final output–which really can't be judged visually...
So, make it look good in Develop then add the Print Sharpening on top.

  • Laser Jet Printer P1007

    HI.
I have installed Laser Jet Printer P1007, since about a month it is not accepting paper for printer.  First it accepts but subsequently stops and retry message comes though the paper is always full.  Please provide solution

Welcome to the HP Forums paperunloading,
I read your post, which indicates that the printer won't pull the paper in.
I can help you with this.
Make sure the paper tray isn't over filled.
I have provided a document to go through the steps to see if that will resolve the issue.
Attention Light Blinks on the Control Panel When a Paper Jam Occurs.

  • HP2420 Laser Jet printer only printing black pages

I have an HP2420 laser jet printer that is only printing black pages.  I have tried 3 different toner cartridges so the cartridge is not the issue.  I saw that there are maintenance kits.  Could these help solve my problem and if so, how do I use them?
    Many thanks

Okay, now where was the paper jam located? Was there any paper torn off when you cleared the jam? As I stated before, almost sounds like a voltage problem, might be one of the contacts might be having an issue. Also, since the machine is new, I would suggest contacting HP, the machine should still be under warranty, if it is in fact new, and see if they can either provide service for it or just replace it. That is of course if you do not get it resolved.

  • Color Laser 2605dn Prints Lines on Pictures

Color Laser 2605dn Prints Lines on Pictures.
Normally all txt prints ok but I cannot get rid of the horizontal and vertical lines ( if the image prints vertical) on all images that it prints.
I rarely use this printer.  I have gone under settings/print quality and calibrated but it does not fix the problem.
    Please help.
    Thank you.
    JB

Looks like a high voltage power supply issue with the black only.  Since the laser/scanner on this model uses 1 motor for 2 colors that would eliminate the laser/scanner.  Repair by a repair shop may cost more than the printer.  Only suggestion I can give to is do a google search for the service manual and download it.  Look for instructions for the removal of the high voltage ps and remove it and then put it back in.  There is always the possibility one of the connectors has become loose and is causing the issue.  Good Luck.

  • 10.9 Reports HP Laser Jet is out of toner and will not print: printer does in fact have sufficient toner.

That message originates from the printer, not the Mac. Get in touch with HP, perhaps they have an explanation.

  • Best Laser Color Printer

I'm in the market for a new laser color printer. Does any one have any suggestions? I need to stay at $800 or below and need to be able to print from CS3
Thanks for any advice I can get

There is no one best, because so much depends on your situation. I recommend that you make a list of the features that you need, and those that you would like, and then go through the various manufacturers and see how close you can get to them. Examples of features would be:
Duty cycle: How much will you print in a day, or a month.
    Network capability
    PostScript
    Duplexing
    Multifunction
Print speed, particularly color print speed.
Trays and tray capacity. The ability to hold a whole ream is valuable if you have trouble storing half a ream.
    Cost of consumables.
You might want to consider other technologies, such as Xerox's solid-ink, or Ricoh's new gel-ink, as well as laser.
None of these technologies do the finest photographs. If you are interested in that as well, you might be better off with two printers.

  • Printer memory question

I purchased a color laserjet mfp m177fw the other day. It is supposed to have 123 mb ram. In the set up there are only options for 16 or 32 mb. Where is the rest of the ram? The reason I ask is that during printing the printer prints 3 pages and stops fpr about 15 seconds then 2 more until done. I am using Windows 7 with 8 meg of ram. Just wondering if i am missing something.

    Hi @bill-wgm ,
I see by your post that you want to know how to get more memory. I can help you.
Please take a look at these two suggestions to try.
Check in the printer drivers to see if you have the option for this model to increase the printer memory.
Go to start, devices and printers, right click your printer, left click printer properties, click on Device Settings tab, go down to Installable options, select Printer Memory and from the drop down see what choices you have.
You can also turn off the Archive Printing on the printer.
Go to setup, services, archive printing, turn it off.
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a nice day!
