Home Library

Hi,
I recently deleted several applications in order to recoup some drive space. I also deleted associated application support files (Mozilla, MS, Firefox and a Yahoo sync file) from my Home Library/Applications Support Folder. In hindsight, I wish I checked with all you experts out there before proceeding to delete the application support files. Is there a chance I did more harm than good for such a small drive space recovery?
Thanks in advance.

what's MS? in general, deleting support files from your home directory library is quite harmless. if needed those files will be recreated from scratch by the applications themselves.

  • How do I find the Home/Library on a backup disk?

On my Mac laptop using Mountain Lion, the Home/Library is found by holding the Option key while selecting the GO menu. But if I want to replace a file from my backup disk (I backup with Time Machine), how do I get to the Library window to get this file? Is the Home/Library folder actually backed up on my backup disk?

~/Library is been backed up, even if it's hidden. To access to the content of that folder from the Time Machine backup, open this folder using the steps you gave in the question.
Then, just open the Time Machine app and restore the files you want. If you want to restore a file from a folder which is inside ~/Library, access to this folder and open the Time Machine app. See "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
If this doesn't work, unhide the folder. To do it, open Terminal (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and type:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library

Might be in /Home/Library/Netscape/ or in /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.

  • Home Library folder was moved, all settings are now gone

    Hello all-
I'm having a serious dilemma, and could really use some help. My MacBook Pro has been having some issues lately: running slowly, constantly kicking me out of Safari for no reason & all together just acting "wrong". About a month ago after reading several posts on this and other forums I decided to download OnyX to keep my system in good order. Upon first running OnyX it told me that my start-up volume needed to be repaired before it would proceed. Scared to do this for fear of screwing something up worse, I stupidly ignored it and went about my life. Then last week my favourite freeware app, xPad, all of a sudden stopped working. This reminded me about the volume issue and I checked the volume with Disk Utility and yes, there were problems. I was told to fix it by using the install discs. I had planned on doing it later that night (though I wasn't sure how) but I thought it would be beneficial to have a copy of my "Home (Shortname) folder" before doing so, in case I screwed something else up. This is where my real problems began.
I made a burn folder of my "Home folder" but realized that the "Library" folder was somehow not in the burn folder. I can't be certain what happened from here. I know I freaked out. I put the burn folder in the trash and restarted my computer. Probably a stupid thing to do, but I admittedly have never known what to do with a burn folder if you don't want it any longer. Well, upon restart it was obvious that I had mucked something up because I was shown the blue apple screen instead of my regular desktop picture, my Dock had several question marks and everything was back to the original settings instead of my brushed metal settings. Though most of my icons were still there and the applications and documents folders seemed unharmed. I began Safari and it too was all amuck. I then took the burn folder out of the trash along with anything I found in "Recovered Files" folders, of which there where several and put them on my desktop. It seems that my Home Library Folder was indeed in the trash along with my Documents, Macintosh HD, Public and several others, plus the Burn Folder with all of the aliases to those folders minus the Library folder (if that makes any sense) & they are now all on my desktop. So now after that long rambling preface, for which I apologize, my questions are as follows:
    1) If I move the Library Folder on my Desktop back to the Home(Shortname) folder will everything be all right again? i.e., applications will run correctly and find their data and life will go on as planned? Or is there something else I need to do instead?
    2) After fixing this dilemma what do I do with all of the folders that are now on my desktop? Particularly my Macintosh HD, Documents, Public and Burn Folder? It seems that trashing them was where the real problems began.
    3) Is it then safe to automatically try to do the reinstall via Disk Utility?
I suppose we should just start with getting this Library matter settled first. Any suggestions are welcomed and greatly appreciated. It seems I know just enough about my Mac to mess it up. So I will gladly take all the advice anyone can give. I thank you all in advance for your help.

Thanks for the quick responses you guys, sorry it took me a while to get back. I did as you suggested bdkjones and all seems to be well. Unfortunately, xPad is still not working and I had hoped that the Startup Disk Repair would solve whatever issue that was, but alas it did not. I'll write the creator of that specific program to see if he has any suggestions, unless anyone else does in the meantime. But as for my prior predicament, though I haven't checked everything folder by folder yet, things seems fine so far. I truly appreciate the help. I pretty much knew what to do but just needed the encouragement of someone saying "Do this. You're on the right path. You won't ruin everything." And don't worry I'll be taking care of any future repairs as soon as I know about them from now on. It was really quite a scare for a while there.
Once again thanks and if you or anyone have any other morsels of info you feel like throwing my way about system maintenance or anything in the Mac realm you feel I should know please feel free. The last few days have made me realize I'm at that dangerous level in computer knowledge where I seem to know just enough to muck something up but not quite how to fix it.

  • Can't see /Users/home/Library in Finder

I can see /Users/home/Library in xterm, but not finder, why?
    iMac - Lion

Because it's invisible. To make it permanently visible:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.

  • Calendar data not in "Home" library folder

Tried looking for home/library/calendar. In order to back up my lost calenda revents with time machine, I would like to know where those events are stored so I don't have to back up my whole computer. As mentioned in the discussion table there is no calendar in the library folder.

If you synchronize any of your calendars with a server, disable that synchronization. Quit Calendar.
Triple-click the line below to select it: ~/Library/Calendars Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Enter Time Machine and restore that folder from the snapshot you want.
Relaunch Calendar and test. Your calendars should be as they were when the snapshot was taken. If you don't sync with a server, stop here. If you do sync some of the calendars with a server, select each one in turn and then select
    File ▹ Export ▹ Export…
from the menu bar. You'll get ICS files with the filename extension ".ics". Re-enable sync. Usually, all the calendars you just restored will be deleted. That's not a problem. Create a new calendar on the server for each one you exported and want to sync:
    File ▹ New Calendar
Then import the calendar from the corresponding ICS file by double-clicking it. Follow the prompts to import the new events to the calendar you just created. For calendars that you don't want to sync, just import them again. They'll appear in the calendar list under On My Mac.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Missing "Application Support" folder in home library (OS 10.6)

So about 6 months ago my old Macbook (from 2006, running OS 10.5.8) finally bit the dust for the last time with a fried logic board. However, this time the hard drive was perfectly functional, so I rescued it from the laptop before trading in the rest of the parts to get a discount on a new Macbook Pro (running OS 10.6.8).
Because the hard drive is still functional, I'm using a hard drive reader to transfer over all my files and information to the new laptop. Everything is there on the old drive, except one key component. I'm missing the "Application Support" folder from my home library (~/Library), which contains a lot of important settings for several applications I use (such as Firefox, an MSN messenger clone I use, etc). I've tried connecting the hard drive reader several times, and each time that folder is missing when I open up the home folder Library.
This folder was clearly there and functioning when the hard drive was still in my old computer. So my question is, where did it go? Is there any way of accessing it with the hard drive reader? Is it gone because of some kind of corruption, and why is it just that folder in particular that's missing? Any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated, since the missing settings contained information that will be very difficult, if not impossible to replace.
    Thanks!

Disk Utility will do a verify/repair of an external disk. Though the chances of this being disk corruption is imo slim. For only one subfolder of of one folder to get clobbered due to a hardware failure while possible is extremely remote.
Try the Disk Utility repair function if the directory is collbered that should recover it (or at least let you know that there is an issue with the drive).
    good luck

  • How can I change my iTunes home library for my iPhone?

I initially synced my iPhone with my desktop computer's iTunes, and thus that becomes its "home library", and it won't let me sync with any other computer (which is understandable). However, what if I want to change the "home library"? Like if I buy a laptop, and then I want to only sync with my new laptop (I don't want to sync with my old computer anymore). I'm hoping there is an easy way to do this without deleting any data. Thanks!

    From your OLD computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

  • Manual Migration to Mountain Lion: but can't see the home library folder.

    Hi,
This is my first post in the Apple support community.
I'm moving from iMac running Snow Leopard to my MacBook Pro retina running Mountain Lion.
I only want to move what I really need, and leave all the old software and old files behind.
I put the MacBook Pro in target disc mode and started moving things through a FireWire 800 cable, connected to a Thunderbolt port through an Apple adapter.
Until I came to the items in the home library folder to move - and, of course - I couldn't see the home library folder on my retina MacBook Pro.
The key question is: can I make it visible for the time of the move?
Should I put the old iMac in target disc mode and handle the move from the retina Macbook Pro side and unhide the library folder using the Command + Shift + G keystroke?
Or are the days of manual migration over due to the hidden home library folder?
Applecare support noted I should use the migration assistant, and that I could chose the files I wanted to move.
Can you really do it in such a detail as during a manual migration?
    Thanks!

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and provide ~/Library/ as the path.

  • Apple TV can air play content from my home library but can't connect to share?

I unwrapped the present, set it up, updated and start playing with it. I have a home library on Windows xp using iTunes 11. I can AirPlay from that library to Apple TV but can't see Apple TV in devices or see my library from Apple TV in shares. Anyone has any suggestions?

That's normal. You can't see Apple TV as a network device on PC.
You can only see your pcs iTunes library on Apple TV but your PC doesn't see Apple TV as a device.

  • How do I remove "Scan with ClamXav" in Lion? I cannot find a contextual menu item folder in at home/library.

How do I remove "Scan with ClamXav" in Lion? I cannot find a contextual menu item folder in at home/library. I installed and removed ClamXav from the Mac app store.
    Thanks.

    ToBeHuman wrote:
Thanks! AppTrap mentioned in the linked article got rid of it for me.
Actually, it didn't. With Snow Leopard and Lion, the contextual menu is provided by a built in "service" within the ClamXav application itself.
If you downloaded ClamXav from the AppStore, all you need to do is trash it and reboot.
If you downloaded the full version from the web you need to first run the "ClamAV Engine REMOVER" script that comes on the ClamXav_2.x.x.dmg. Then trash the ClamXav application, empty the trash and reboot.
There are also one or two preferences that can be found in ~/Library/Preferences/ that start with "uk.co.markallen.clamxav..." that take up minimal space and don't do anything without the application. AppTrap probably found those.

  • Home/Library folder missing among other things (Lion 10.7.1)

Since I upgraded to Lion, my 1 year old iMac has been running incredibly slow. It takes forever for any apps to open. Printing takes forever, and Preview - forget about it.
Versions worked right after the install, but not since.
Today, an application which I have been using for a long time (but not every day) stopped working. I went to update some plugins, but to do so I had to go into home/library/application support/ ... That's when I found the folder missing!
I imagin this is why my system is so slow and wonky. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it.
    Thanks, in advance, Fran

Thanks so much for this! Any suggestions on the cause of the slowness and missing parts of Lion - like Versions? It's probably staring me in the face (like the "missing" folder).

  • Home/Library/Safari/LocalStorage - Any tips and info?

Hi, I just saw that I have some files in my Home/Library/Safari/LocalStorage folder. I usually restart Safari from time to time, deleting images, icons, cache and such. But I have these files in this folder. I know there are some video content of some news websites that I surf, but I don't want to leave them there forever.
Is there any safe way for the system to delete these files?.
How can I know about other files for iTunes, Safari or other apps on my computer that kept undeleted and become useless and how to remove them?.
    Thanks a lot!

sorry for such a pity question that was asked before
nooo sorry we didn't get to you - but glad you're all set.
the Databases folder can go too, although both should be cleared if you use Safari-Preferences-Security-Show Databases-Remove All

  • Syncing overseas purchases with home library

My son's birthday was celebrated overseas and his relatives bought him an itunes gift card. We couldnt sign in with our address so purchased his apps and music via their itunes account and synced it to my iphone. How do I now sync this with my home country account so we can merge the purchases with his current home library? I would hate him to lose what his birthday gift was....When answering please put in simple language for my simple technical brain. Thanks.

iTunes accounts can't be merged. iTunes purchases are permanently locked to the account that purchased them.
You will have to log into the account that purchased apps to update them and and log into the account to authorize the computer to move them to your computer.
