Home movies freezing and pausing

Up until a month ago, our Apple TV worked well. Before the invention of apple TV's, we collected quite an extensive DVD collection, and decided to purchase the ATV, convert our home movies to apple TV compatible movie files, and store them in the apple TV movie library for easy and convenient access. We also have all of our home movies stored there too, and watch them regularly. This worked a dream, up until a month ago...
Now, any home movie, or movie that we copied and stored ourselves pauses, skips and freezes throughout the movie. Movies we downloaded from iTunes work flawlessly. All of our software is up to date. We have reset the apple TV, turned off the TV, reset iTunes, but now don't know what to do.
Help!!! If we can't fix this, the AppleTV is useless to us!

Hi. Sorry to hear about your problem. Our family also loves watching home movies on it. We easily have over 60 or 70 hours.
1. Are your home movies on a different hard drive than the downloaded movies? If so, you may have a drive going bad. Do these videos skip in iTunes as well or no? If this is the case, back up your movies and get a new hard drive.
2. If you sync the home movies to your Apple TV, do you still have the problem? If not, maybe it is a network issue. Try disconnecting your ATV from the network then reconnecting to it.

  • Home movies freeze on AppleTV???

    Hi,
I have several home movies that are in .mp4 and .avi format.
I want to watch them on my AppleTV.
I've used Handbrake to convert the .avi files to .mp4.
I've tagged the all the files using MetaX or Subler - in the past I found that meta data added with Get Info in iTunes can sometimes be lost if the files is deleted  or copied to a new computer.
However, when I try to play the videos on AppleTV (either streaming from my iTunes library or copying it to AppleTV), a video either play for a second and then freeze up the AppleTV.
The remote can't work and I have to unplug the AppleTV to get it working again.
It has happened to me before and I would like to know what could cause this.
I've tried changing the files from .mp4 to .m4v but this doesn't help.
Does anyone know what might be causing this?
    Cheers in advance.

    There may be several causes.
RF interference can scupper wifi if using that (my microwave used to cause havoc when used!).
It's worth restarting router, AppleTv, computer and iTunes - not guaranteed to fix but sometimes helps.
Is it consistent with all content via Home sharing? Does stuff via the internet work ok?

  • What's the best workflow for Home Movie Importing and Enjoying?

I'm new to iMovie (and the mac) and have started importing all my home movies from my camcorder into iMovie. I quickly realized that movies take a huge amount of disk space and it may or may not be reasonable to import all my movies and keep them on the hard disk in .dv format. At 12GB/Hour I would need 1.2 Terabytes of storage (plus backup). If that is the best workflow, i'm happy to invest in a few terabytes of storage and back up. But before I do that, I want to check to see if there is a different workflow I should follow given my use case.
    Here is my use case:
I have 100 hours of 8mm and miniDV tapes already and plan to continue creating more.
I want to import them all into the iMac for ease of organization, searching for the clips of interest, and watch them either on my iMAC and also on my TV (via TIVO).
I may do some editing, but this is not a big priority for me at this time. I may do more editing in the distant future when I have more time. My editing for now will be limited to rejecting portions of clips I don't want.
I plan to watch the movies from my iMac on my TV via my TIVO (i've already ordered the Roxio Toast software that I understand I need, per the Tivo web site).
The final piece of my use case is back-up. I'd prefer to back up my movies on disk this way I maintain any editing i've done in case of a disk failure. Depending on what video format is recommended, this may bump me into a RAID multi-terabyte system as both working and automatic backup?
    Here are my questions:
Should I maintain my event library in .dv format? (and bite the bullet on the storage)
Or is the .dv format intended only for temporary editing and users are expected to compress into another format after editing? if so, what format and which tool is recommended? (keeping in mind that I want to view the clips via Tivo and Roxio/Toast).
If I need to byte the bullet and invest in storage, my quick math suggests I'll need about 2 terabytes for the library and 2 more for back up for a total of 4 terabytes!?. Is a RAID system recommended for this? (I was surprised that the Apple store did not carry such a system, so perhaps that is not the best option). What would you recommend?
Anyone out there with a similar use case? I know I've asked a lot of questions here. I'd appreciate any recommendations you may have, even if you cant answer all of them.
    Thank you.

I am in a similar mode, though about half as much existing DV footage.
+Should I maintain my event library in .dv format? (and bite the bullet on the storage)+
    Short answer, yes; long answer:
I did "bite the bullet" since 1T drives are at or just over $100. I'm using a MacBook Pro so I bought an 2 port eSATA card for my cardbus slot ($34), and a 1T eSATA/Firewire/USB drive ($119). I don't plan to "back up" as I am not going to get rid of my Mini DV tapes/vhs/analog tapes, etc. Those will be in an off-site dark cool closet elsewhere. I don't want to do RAID or such as it still puts everything in the same drive unit, in the same location. Basically I'm splitting my video import to two different physical drives. So if lightning, thieves, personal incompetence or whatever strikes, there's more chance it'll only affect one of the drives. I've thought about a Drobo, which you might consider. It is unique device that offers a spin on RAID that offers some advantages.
Everything I read here on these boards suggests that it is best to grab the source video in the original format whenever possible. Since storage is cheap, makes sense to me.
It is likely you wouldn't compress your video unless you were going to edit it. For example if you wanted to make a video of the kids growing up to give the relatives you'd likely end up compressing to burn them a dvd. You would compress if you were going to use MobileMe, YouTube, etc. to post some footage. Whether you watch the video from home, or output to DVD for others, or post online, at least you'll have the source video in it's best possible original format to work with.
This is an aside, but might be useful, I imported one tape at a time, let iM09 create a new event and split per each day. THen I renamed every event based on what the content was before doing the next tape. This really helps later on once yo realize you have a hard drive with 50 hours + of everything in your life on it. I included the year in the name in some way, for example, John's wedding 1994, Hawaii 2000, Hawaii 2004. Then I ended up drag/dropping Hawaii to one event.

  • ITunes movie freezes and skips with VGA out to projector

    Hi,
I have rented several movies on iTunes and can watch them onscreen no problem. When I used the VGA dongle to source the screen to an external projector, however, the movie gradually began to skip and freeze, with up to half a second pause between frame updates. Rebooting did not change this; however, after pulling out the adapter and just watching it onscreen, the movie was fine.
Has anyone else had this problem? And any idea what I can do about it?

this is probably because of the low processor, and integrated graphics. the Macbook pro has a graphics card that helps process the images, while the MBA relies on the processor to control graphics.
The video isn't smooth because of the slow processor.

  • Home movies freeze at same point

    Hi,
I hope that someone can help.
I have broken my daughter's wedding video into 6 episodes. These are in MP4 format. I use Add File to Library to import into iTunes.
Then on my apple TV I can play these movies but they always freeze at exactly the same point a few minutes in.
Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening.
I have updated apple TV to latest software and am running iTunes 11
This is very frustrating - I'm sure that you can imagine all the discussions when the in-laws come round and I can't get all of my 'stupid technology' to work!
    Thanks
    Steve

It was affecting my work iMac as well, and finally I figured it might be my Rules crashing it. I disabled all of them, and the crashing stopped. So at least I've got that much figured out. Now I just need to figure out how to turn the Rules back on without incident.

  • Exported movies freeze and won't play.

Whenever exporting an iMovie project, (i'm using iMovie HD, although I do have iMovie '08, and if i'm correct, the problem started when I tried using iMovie '08.) the finished movie's video will always freeze about halfway through, while the audio will continue to play. This happens regardless of what I am exporting it as (mpeg, .mov, .avi, etc.). Anybody else have this problem and/or know what to do about it?

I have had that problem, and worse in that it wouldn't export at all, if my iMovie is composed of many, many clips or has many added audio clips.
My solution is to 'share' as quicktime, full-quality, resulting in a quicktime movie of my iMovie. I then open a new iMovie project, import this new quicktime movie and export that back to my camcorder. It works perfectly!
I also will use the new iMovie with the quicktime movie in iDVD if my original iMovie stutters or skips on playback.
You will have to redo chapter markers as they do not 'share' to quicktime.
The only caution is that you need enough free drive space to create the quicktime movie. It should be smaller in GB size than the original iMovie as it keeps only the footage actually in the timeline. If the quicktime version plays ok, you can delete the original iMovie.

  • IPhone defaulting back to home screen, freezing and in a loop of rebooting/asking for passcode

iPhone 4, just over a month old, about 2 weeks into use has been playing up since.... I'm certain the problem is the same, but it manifests in different ways, usually daily. If unused for a period (as in an hour or two), the iPhone (when pressing the home button) goes to the black reboot screen, then asks for passcode, back to reboot, passcode and into an interminable loop.
Attempting to launch applications, or the internet, will just revert back to the home screen (as if the home button is pressed), or often, the home button will not work at all.
The onyl way of rectifying this is to shut off or - as this is sometimes not possible - screen and all buttons unresponsive - rebooting (holding home button & one of button)
I'm hoping it's a simple case of reinstalling something, or perhaps reverting to factory settings, but wonder if anyone else has experienced anything similar.

    Hello Simmo1997,
Sorry to hear about your issue but let’s see if we can get your iPhone back up in running. If your iPhone is disconnecting when trying to restore then check out the article below to get you started with isolating the issue. Let me know if it gets resolved or if you discover a new symptom.

  • Clip inspector-as i try to fast forward,i movie freezes and clip preview section goes blank. please help.

As I try to fast forward my selected clip, the video preview section goes blank and the clip doesnt get fast forwarded. I have to restart the imovie in order to be able to get the preview back. and in all this, the clip inspector never works. I updated my mac's software several times hoping that it would resolve the issue but nothing of that kind happened. Please help me.

Select the clip in the timeline and then the drop down menu should work okay. You can hold down the control key and click on the clip to get the drop down menu and select retime editor.

  • I'm using Windows 8.  I have 2 folders in my videos library - movies and personal videos.  When I try to import a movie into iTunes, it puts it in the Home Video section and if I import a personal video, it puts it into the home video section.  what up?

Im using Win8.  I originally had all my ripped movies in a movie folder listed in the videos library.  This imported into iTunes movies with no issue.  I later added a second folder t my library - personal videos where i put all my home videos.  I was able to import this into iTunes and it showed up in "Home Movies" - very cool and exactly what I wanted.  Now, if I add a new ripped movie and put it in my movie librairy and try to import it into iTunes, it places it in Home Movies.  And if I put a new personal video, it will also import into iTunes under 'Home Video?.  What is going on here??  Any help would be greatly appreciated - it seems like this is a bug in iTunes 11.

I thank you for the response.  Apple does some assinine things sometimes and this is one of them.  Ask the planet the difference between a movie and a home video and with the exception of Apple, you'd get 100% consenus on the what difference is.  A home video is something that I shoot, like my kids birthday party.  A movie is something I urchased either via download or a DVD that I ripped.  Unbelievable!   The fact that Apple has chosen not to distinguish based upon which folder I tell it is Movies and which folder is Home Videos is really hard to fathom - sounds like something Windows would do. I find it funny that in my iTunes movies sub-section of the movies section, the movie icons have a cloud icon in upper right corner to distinguish it as bought from Apple iTunes versus no cloud icon for movies that I have ripped - so the distintion was already made and clearly visible.  Now - everything just defaults to "home videos" if I try to import a new ripped DVD - why even bother to have this distinction on the iTunes bar?  WOW!
As for your direction, I do not understand what you are telling me - what Media Kind and what Options tab are you referring to?  I see no Options tab in iTunes.  Right licking on the movie icon does not yield media kind or options as well.  Gping to the source file does not yield these options either.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • ITunes video playback freezing and out of sync from audio problem

There's one thing that bugs me more than the non-responses I get from Apple Support is when I try to watch a movie on iTunes and during the action parts or exciting scenes, the video freezes and pauses from the audio for a few seconds. It happens quite often during video play. How can this matter be solved and I can watch a movie that costs WAY too much to buy on iTunes and actually enjoy it for once? Anybody? Hello? Bueller?

Q? Are you using Quicktime to play the video on your PC or other video player like Real Player?
As some 3rd party players may not sinc right or you may have to download a newer codec.
I use GOM player and it works well on my PC for video from iPhone 4S.
    Hope this helps.

  • My iPod Touch is freezing and rebooting itself.

    Hi.
    Here's the story:
My iPod was recently working yesterday. I left it on the wall charger for a while, and later I come back to find my iPod frozen, out of nowhere. For another while, it freezes and starts to reboot itself. I done all I can. I watched videos on how to unfreeze it and etc, and I tried restoring it, and doing about everything I can to recover this iPod, it doesn't work. So I turned it off, and let it settle overnight. This morning, I turn it on, and it restored, everything was working fine, until when I go to my Messages app, it freezes once again, and now it is doing the same thing, but this time it repeats to the home screen, freezes, and reboots again. I tried calling for support and they said my warranty is expired.
I own an iPod Touch 4G, 8GB, for about 6 months.
To be specific: It always goes to the Apple logo and then the loading circle then shuts off, then does it again. Before this problem about a day before this happened, I accidentally put a little water on it and wiped it off while I was working on chores. (Sorry, I often have it next to me a lot.) Plus, I did have a lot of data on it but it didn't seem much of a problem.
Please, if anyone can help, tell me what is the reason behind this problem, and at least if you can try to solve this for me. I will try going to a local Apple store later on if this problem keeps going. But for right now, I need this help. Thank you all.
    Bye.

  • Movie freezes on the .mov file

Sorry if this problem has been addressed before, but I didn't see it in the first 10 pages or so of the discussions.
I have iMovie HD 5.0. I created an iMovie project, using a combination of photos and .mov files. The file played well in iMovie, and I was even able to burn the project to a DVD with iDVD. However, when I try to play the DVD, either on my DVD player for TV, or the one on my computer, the movie freezes and won't go any farther when it gets to the first .mov file. The only thing I can do is stop the DVD at that point.
The .mov files I'm using were done with my digital camera, which can take both still shots and small video clips.
I thought this was a simple process, because I've been successful before. The difference this time, however, is that I'm using .mov files from my digital camera instead of .avi files from the digital video camera. I suspect the issue lies with the .mov files, but don't know how to fix it. Help!
    Kristen

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Yes, a 1 G movie is way too big for a web site. How did you create the movie? Have you looked into ways to reduce it's size. Quicktime Player can reduce a movie's size to meet several criteria as shown in the File->Export for Web settings window:
That can reduce it somewhat. If you bring the movie into iMovie you can export it to a MobileMe gallery in multiple sizes to fit the viewer's internet connection speed and device.
The resulting gallery can be inserted into a web page using iFrame code and an HTML snippet as in this demo page: Adding a MMe Gallery from iMovie 09. This is predicated on you having a MobileMe account where you're hosting the site.
A way to add the movie to a page and have the page load fully without having to have the movie load are demonstrated here:
Opening Item in a New, Precisely Sized Window
QT Movies via Export for Web in QT Player
Still another alternative would be to convert the movie to flash and use that. Flash conversions are generally much smaller than Quicktime files. You can learn more about that at:
    http://roddymckay.com/VisualMedia/FlashVideo.html
    http://iwebfaq.org/site/iWeb_Movies.html
The bottom line is: 1 GB is way too large.

  • Movie freezes during export to Camera

I am trying to export my imovie to a sony video camera. I have done this before with my boyfriends mac and imovie, and that worked - I know that the camera and firewire work. I have the newer version of imovie, does that make a difference? Imovie begins to play my movie and the camera records. About 5 minutes into it the movie freezes and the camera keeps recording that image until I stop it. It freezes at different times each try, but all toward the beginning.
    Help!!

hi rtrusty - welcome to the forum!
Maybe you are running really low on storage space, or maybe you have several other programmes open while you are sharing to camera? Or is the project stored on an external hard drive - if so, is it correctly formatted for Macs - Mac OS Extended?

  • Cancelled Home Move

    Hi,
i have been a loyal BT customer for over 8 years, we were moving house so i asked for a home move only to realise i would be tied into a new line rental for 12 months and the broad band would be very poor in the new house due to the distance from the exchange. So after 3 phone calls i eventually got hold of the home move team and asked them to cancel the move which they said they did. They also said if i cancel my Broadband i will be charged for early termination (i stupidly downgraded my package 6 months ago) so i dont mind paying.
So on friday 23rd i cancelled the requested home move (they did say i needed to call back on tuesday 27th to cancel the broadband) but what with moving house and working 10hr night shifts, i didnt get the chance.
And on 30th (the cancelled home move date) BT activated the phone line in the new house?
I do not want this phone line, this is why i cancelled the home move. Trouble is i have no proof i phoned up to cancel, no email etc.
What are my rights here? is there a period of time after activation where i can still cancel?

As this is a user to user forum, you need to contact the BT Care team who moderate this forum. They should be able to help you.

When I install an operating system update, this is what appears in iTunes. An additional copy of the home movie appears and all of them have 'New' across the image. Do I need to keep all of these files? Is there a setting I can change so this doesn't happen? Thanks.
