Home movies get info/adding items to device
I am trying to add details to some new home movies such as the artist name and album name just as I have been doing for years - but the Get Info only allows me to rename the file itself and add directors details, there's no option for any of the other details I have used so far to categorise my home movies to enable me to search for them (e.g. a You Tube video by a specific group that I have saved).
This re-launch of iTunes is supposed to make things easier but so far very little I have tried to do on it has proved easier, I am spending so much time trying to work out what I now have to do I am getting little else done this weekend. It's a bit like Windows 8 compared to Windows 7 - okay for those who designed it who know where everything is, but for the hundreds of millions of users now wasting time trying to find where things are that they were used to, I am sure it is not proving to be a great update.
So if anyone has worked out how to fill in the fields for the various columns we can choose for home movies (and probably for anything else) I'd be extremely grateful for any input.
I also notice when on my device I cannot add any columns - I can sort music by album, artist or song name but I like to have date added, date modified as well.
I'm setting up my new iPhone 6 plus and finding it very difficult to actually get the music I want on to the phone - I manually manage my devices and drag and drop on to the device. The device does appear in the side menu once you have highlighted your chosen files but it is hit or miss if the files actually drop on to the device - and where before it was just a move down the side bar to the music folder of the device, now I have to go to the top, click on device, wait for the summary screen to open, choose music, then either put the name of the file in the search field or scroll down to see if the file has added. In some cases I can see it is trying to add the file as a greyed out version appears but it never actually gets on to the phone so I have to delete and try again. I spent ages last night achieving about 10% of the stuff I wanted to get on to the phone.
Select all the tracks and do a right-click > Get Info. Answer yes, you want to edit info on multiple items.
Retype the Album and Album Artist fields.
For Album Artist on compilation CDs, I usually use "Various Artists". Then each track has the actual artist...such as the soundtrack to Garden State has
Album=Garden State
Album Artist = Various Artists
Track 1 Artist = Coldplay
Track 2 Artist = The Shins
and so on.
Make sure the "track 1 of 13" fields are also filled in.
That should get them grouped together.

Everybody who reads the iTunes support forum will understand this version needs improvement and fine-tuning, because there are bugs and some features are not yet working as they should. My world view is no exception to that.
But it's not badly designed at all. It's just a little different from the iTunes we learned to use in the last 10 years and that means one has to get used to the different behavior of the program. Some call it change for the sake of change. I disagree. The sidebar is now just for editing playlists and content of iDevices. In the old sidebar one had to scroll down to the playlists. You don't need to to that anymore. It's always right beside the library. That's improvement. The iTunes store seems to be a part of the program now. That's improvement. Managing the main screen can be done in just one menu (on the right of the white top bar), instead of clicking on the white top bar and having to switch to the top bar menu to add other filter choices. That's improvement.
Just give yourself a bit of time to get used to new the habits, just give Apple a little time to finetune the new program and you'll really learn to like it. -
Get Info iTunes items grayed out
I just recently transfered my iTunes library from a PC (running XP) to a Mac Mini. Some of the songs had artwork, while most did not.
When I access the library on the Mini and select a song using "Get Info," the tabs at the top of the window (Summary, Info, Video, Sorting, Options, Artwork) are only partially available to me. Video is grayed out (not surprising since it's an audio file). "Options" and "Artwork" are also grayed out. I have also tried to import album artwork but the box in the lower left hand corner says "not modifiable."
Not only that, if I click on "Info" I do not have the option to modify any of the song information. It won't let me delete or add to.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Just a guess, but it could be a permissions problem. Navigate to your iTunes Music Folder thru the Finder, do Get Info (command + i) and see if you have Read and Write permissions on the folder AND click the button that says Details and make sure that Read and Write is Applied to the Enclosed Folders. You might also try repairing permissions in Disk Utility.
Also...do you have Admin privileges on your user account on the Mac? -
I have Win7 64 bit running iTunes 10.5. When I import a CD and click on the "Get Info" context menu item for the CD drive item on the left side of the window, the expected context menu and input boxes appear. When I type anything into any of the available input boxes, iTunes immediately throws a fail exit to Windows. Here are relevant screen shots:

So far Microsoft hasn't notified me of any solutions to this failure.
This info needs to get to Apple, but I am not paying to give them information to fix their problems!

PS: As a work around, I can highlight the entire CD worth of tracks and edit the common information in the Get Info function at that level... Still, iTunes should not be throwing program failure exceptions in any case. It is especially annoying on such common functions. One might have expected a more thorough testing program prior to general release.
DVHThanks for your response. I attempted to do that, but I couldn't find any way to access the configuration for the Zhone router. Typing the IP address into my web browser's address bar only resulted in "page could not be found" or "page timed out", etc. I called tech support at Northstate, who likewise suggested that the Zhone router should be set to bridge mode and the AEBS set to router mode since it would be easier for me to configure the AirPort. After wrangling a bit with them over my inability to change any settings for the Zhone, they sent a technician over. He messed around with the Zhone, apparently putting it in bridge mode, and we managed to get the AirPort to work without any double NAT errors. I reset the AirPort and created a new configuration file. Unfortunately, when I went to the Advanced/Port Mapping menu and repeated the original steps to forward port 7777, tests at www.whatsmyip.org still returned "timed out". The technician said he wasn't knowledgable enough about Apple products to assist me any further and suggested I call their tech support or visit the nearest Genius Bar. So that's about it. Any other ideas?

how do I get the downloaded music on my iphone to my new home pc and itunes, it took the info from the 1st device but not the 2nd
the appletv will not display your movies in folders.
you could change the tags in itunes to include the genre in the "show" field in the "video" tab. this would replicate the view you want, but you will need to tag all your movies to do this. -
ITunes 11 - Get Info greyed out for movies on external drive
With iTunes 10, my itunes movies and TV shows grew to about 1.2TB of data, and I shifted them to an external drive.
I was able to edit the information via 'get info' until upgrading to iTunes 11.
Now all the information, bar the 'five stars' field are greyed out. If I shift a particular movie back to the internal drive, I can edit (genre, for example). Shift away again, get info greys out.
Any advice? It feels like iTunes thinks it has the wrong permissions.When you add a movie to iTunes you have to make sure it makes a copy of the file in the iTunes Media folder. Otherwise, you can't edit any of the information on the movie or video.
In iTunes 12, go to Edit-->Preferences
In Preferences, go to Advanced and make sure the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library".
Unfortunately, you will now have to re-import the movie files into iTunes using "Add File To Library..." Once imported, the movie will sometimes appear under "Home Movies" instead of "Movies" but if you right click on the movie file it will list a menu item called "Get Info" where you can change the "Options" to "Movie".

Can't edit movie artwork (greyed out on Get Info tabs)
All I need to know is how to be able to add artwork to my movies that are being read form an external hard drive. When I press CMD+I for the get info window the option to even select the Artwork tab is greyed out and unavailabe. How do I get it to add artwork that I have found online?
I did not have this problem when itunes was reading the movies from my actual mac computer it only started when I made itunes read the movies from my external drive. I can still edit the artwork for the ones that are not on my external drive yet and are only on my actual mac computer. MOVIE ARTWORK
I have copied a number of movies to my iPad2 for my grand daughter to watch. I downloaded the movie posters for each movie, shrunk them to about 26kb jpegs and then added them to the Movie on the get info screen. ITunes crashed during "Get Info" now the movie won't add to the library
Hi all,
I've been using iTunes with my Apple TV for over a year now, and this is the first time this has happened, and I'm at a loss on what to do to remedy it.
I added a number of movies to my iTunes (as i have done a number of times before), and selected them all, and clicked on Get Info, to move them from "Home Movies" to "Films", nothing new there, but this time when i clicked ok this time, for whatever reason iTunes stopped responding, and came up with the usual error of "iTunes has stopped responding....", so after I get returned to my desktop I went back in to iTunes and the movies i'd added weren't in "Home Movies" so i figured, "oh well, it must have completed it anyway, and then crashed", so i went and checked my movie list, and they aren't there either.
I figured that it just hadn't saved the fact i'd imported them, and went to add them again, but it just won't add them... i've tried adding them as multiple files, and adding them as individuals, but still to no avail.
Can anyone shed any light, or point me in the right direction for correcting this issue?

If iTunes quit unexpectedly while saving changes, and now will not import the movies again, I'd suggest rebuilding your iTunes library. See this article for help with this troubleshooting step:

Help!! I can't get my new macbook to print with my Dell 155w OR burn a home movie to DVD
I cannot get my very recently purchased macbook pro to burn a home video to dvd OR connect to my dell 155w printer. I bought a macbook because it was so highly recomended. But I don't want to keep replacing things. I am so frustrated. I wanted a macbook because of its reputation. But I can't seem to figure out anything. I'm dissapointed and thinking I will just return it.
Your problem may be able to be solved but take this from a Long time Windows user and current Mac owner. Macs are not easier to use. Mac break down just as often as PCs, percentage wise as to how many are sold/produced.
They use the exact same hardware as Win PCs.
The learning curve for OS X is greater then for Windows.
Not sure of the age of your printer but it may not be supported in the newest Mac OS, Lion.
We would need a little more info on how you are trying to connect TO the printer. USB cable or Wirelessly.
As far as burning a Home Movie to DVD. Apple use to supply a program called iDVD for this but with the introduction of Lion OS they stopped supplying that program. You could try another burning program. Try Burn or you could buy something like Toast (Burn is free).
Personally I would return your Macbook Pro and stick to what you know with a good PC notebook.
Apple has a 14 day No Questions Asked return policy for Full refund. Take advantage of that policy. -
The following error comes up when I try to install the updated Firefox:
"The operation can’t be completed because some items had to be skipped. For each item, choose File > Get Info, make sure “Locked” is deselected, and then check the Sharing & Permissions section. When you are sure the items are unlocked and not designated as Read Only or No Access, try again."
When I follow the instructions in the error message, it shows that my user name has read and write access. There are a couple other items that are read only. I tried to change this to read and write, but the Sharing and Permissions options are greyed out and will not let me change them. What is the work around for this? I would really like to install the new firefox.

Unable to open the photos in reviewer, every time I click on the photo on , it says do not have permission to view the photo. Please open the item in the finder choose the item and click on <get info>. What am I suppose to change in the setting on <get info>
Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:

Can anyone help me write a script that would click "get info" and then "enter" on each movie in my itunes library? I am asking because my itunes 11 repeatedly loses the artwork to my movies in my itunes library. I can restore the artwork (and make my apple tv see the movie exists as well) by going into the movie library and clicking on each movie by hand, slecting get info, and then selecting enter. Now doing this 10 times in 20 days was fun and all BUT I would really like to automate the process so everytime itunes screws it up I can fix it easier.
I saw this example of an itunes script that restores artwork for music

My husband bought an Ipad 3. He gave me his Ipad 2. How do we get the home movies from the 2 to the 3? I would like to restore the 2 to factory settings. As I understand, from reading "help", videos are NOT in the Photo Stream.
1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :

2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad -
When adding ringtones (created by ringtone app) they show in music tab nor tones. the file type in 'get info' is 'ringtone'. Why dont they display in the 'tones' tab in itunes? How can I get them to display under 'tones' not 'music'.
Well, I tried rebuilding the Launch services with the command listed but still no luck. After having no luck with that and deleting caches, etc....I also, went to my home (user) directory and in Preferences, I deleted the com.apple.launchservices.plist file. I restarted and checked and still the same result.
Also, I want to emphasize again that the file type I am discussing DOES actually launch with the correct application. (Cubase files in my example).
But it is just annoying that ALL of my Cubase files display the Pro Tools application icon, and in Get Info they are listed to open with Pro Tools. But they actually do launch Cubase if double clicked.
And one other VITAL note....if I open Get Info for one of these files, and change the Open With from Pro Tools to Cubase....then that choice DOES "stick" and retain. (if I "don't" also click Change All)
It's only when I click "Change All" that it DOESN'T stick and the list selection jumps back to Pro Tools. I hope that may offer some clarity.
