Home movies Info Vanishes when Home Sharing On, Just Thumbnails!

i have various movies on my iMac and sometimes drop them on to iPad with no problems at all, but i recently added a few tutorial videos on to mac as I'm learning guitar. i thought id try turning on Home Sharing on my devices so i could see them on the iPad.. i managed this and there they are apart from no info beneath the thumbnails, the info is visible on iMac but nothing on iPad apart from thumbnail, is there a reason for this? i trawled the net for a solution and spoke to apple direct but no joy? this also happens to all regular moves too so its not just the guitar vids.

Look in Home Video or change the tags in iTunes to Movies.

  • Home sharing is just too hard

If you have a Time Machine running a fast and slow network ("g" and "n"), do both computers need to be either "g" or "n" for Home Sharing to work? I've got one master library on an iMac ("g") that I want to be able to share with a Mac Mini and MacBook (both "n"). No matter what I do, I can't seem to get the iMac to show up on either of the other machines. Firewalls are off, same user logged in to all iTunes accounts, all using the same (latest) version of iTunes and Snow Leopard, etc., etc. I've reviewed the Apple tech docs many many times, it just doesn't work. The Sharing bar just never appears. Any help would be appreciated.

not unless you have assigned different SSID's to each band.

be sure that (a) iTunes on all machines is authorized to the same iTMS account and (b) all machines have access to the internet.
if you didn't already, peruse these reads: one and two.

  • Home Sharing and Airplay: fall 2011 major trouble in iTunes to APTV, IOS devices - detailed run-through.

Dear all, and dear Apple - as you know flagged trouble regarding Home Sharing to devices and to APTV has grown exponentially this fall and it is high time Apple calmly regained control over the situation. Get a grip, this is a fundamental "it just works" reputational issue.
Having read lots of community posts I am struck by how many crosschecks I have done and still cannot get Home Sharing to ´just work´ anymore.
    Symptoms of my troubles include:
    (1) In iTunes the Home Sharing house icon is nowhere to be found on the left hand side even though I have turned it on several times.
    (2) Airplay icon was visible in the lower right corner of iTunes for about two minutes last night but then vanishes.
    (3) My iPhone4S cannot find my shared library (under "More" or anywhere else).
    (4) And APTV will occationally load my Mac library to play a purchased tv episode but is highly unstable. 1 in 4 attempts succesful.
Ah, you say, "this all sounds like your home network is either faulty or the signal is not strong enough", or "you have not set up Home Sharing right".
    OK, let´s see...
The Airport Extreme station is right next to APTV, and is itself connected via ethernet to my router - and besindes my Mac can still find a strong signal via wifi. I access internet on my wifi-only iPad2 easily throughout the house, nice and strong signal. The APTV menu tells me the signal strength is excellent, and, most importantly - it worked a couple of weeks ago with no change in settings. I played my iTunes Library on my iPhone via Home Sharing, and I watched APTV TV episodes streamed from my Mac upstairs.
So far I have triple-checked the following settings:
Home Sharing on my Mac turned on under Advanced? yes. (House icon appears - until I press the "Done" button, then it vanishes).
Even though the House icon is nowhere to be found, is Home Sharing still "On" under iTunes Advanced setting? yes.
Under Preferences, Sharing, all ticks are carefully turned on? yes.
APTV Home Sharing: the same ID details, correctly entered?  yes. And for a little while, or on occation we have access to my library on APTV (but not the other mobile devices). Then it vanishes again (Computer menu on APTV telling me to turn on Home Sharing with ID etc.)
Mobile devices, under Settings/Music, are the Home Sharing details the same as those on your Mac/iTunes? yes.
All software on APTV, iTunes, OIS and Lion up to date? yes, as of 18/12 2011. For iTunes I have 10.5.2 (11)
I also reset Factory Settings on my APTV, which enabled us to watch a TV episode last night, but this morning it is gone again.
Within limits of how many devices I can share my library or iTunes with ? yes, 2 computers are authorised on my ID, and 3 devices are authorised on iCloud (iPad2, iPhone 4S and this Mac).
Have you tried the degrading, not-up-to-Apple-standard way of unplugging APTV/Airport Extreme/Mac power, and restarting your iPad/iPhone4S? Yes.
Does Airplay work from devices to e.g. APTV? yes it does.
Can I access the internet or rent a movie on APTV? yes.
Is this a strength issue with my Mac? Is my Mac fast/strong enough? Yes; it is a 3.06Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, running 8GB/1067 MHz/DDR3. 100GB of available harddrive space.
Dear community - what have I forgotten to do, please? Any ideas?
And Apple: please help your repeat customers with these issues - clearly there are some room for improvement here!?
Regards and best wishes for the Season.

I seem to have a similar problem.  I have a Macbook and a PC, both running the current version of iTunes.  On the APTV (also running the current software version), only my Macbook library shows up under "computers".  Home Sharing is turned on for both and my Macbook library shows up under "Shared" on the PC, but the PC iTunes library doesn't show up on the Macbook or the APTV.
My question then is: How is it that my Macbook iTunes library can show up on the PC and on the APTV, but the PC iTunes library doesn't show up on either?  If the PC can see the shared libraries, doesn't that mean it's on the same network?  Along those same lines, "Shared" libraries do NOT show up on the Macbook.  Again I ask, how is it that I can see the Macbook library on the PC, but the Macbook doesn't show any Shared libraries?
All of this worked just fine before the upgrade to iOS 5 by the way.  I had no issues seeing any library on any devices and the APTV found both computers.
Please help.  This is really annoying!

  • ITunes 10.5.2... home sharing won't stay on.

I'll try and cover as much as possible as to not leave anything out
    Equipment
    ATV 2 (4.4.4)
MacBook Pro 13 running iTunes 10.5.2  also fully updated
Telus Optik internet 25 MB Connection
Unrelated things also connected to wifi
    2 iPhones
    1 iPad
    PS3
    1 PC
    Telus DVR (hardwired)
    Everything is running on wireless.
So this use to work fine on my previous iTunes I would open ATV and home sharing was just always an option under the computers tab
Now since updating I open iTunes and home sharing just does't pop up in the tray on the left side but it use to just fine and without fail
The steps I've tried to correct the problem are as follows
I've tried to deauthorize the computer and then re authorize it
I've turned off home sharing and then turning it back on both on the ATV and iTunes (also should note I've done this in different combinations of steps ie. auth then repower then turn on ATV and vice versa etc etc...)
I've also done the above without hitting the done botton after turning home sharing on with iTunes it stays in the tray this way but still won't show up on the ATV, once I hit done it just disappears.
I've tried all the little tips like turn off power saver and all that fun stuff, none of it works.
I've checked all the configs on my firewall and they are set to allow iTunes on any port any connection etc.
I've read countless other threads and user tips to no avail.
I can't downgrade my iTunes back to 10.5.1 because everytime I try to move it to the tray the lion os says it can't be removed.
I can't figure out if this is actually an iTunes issue or an ATV one?
    Anyways
If anyone could assist me or if you're having the same issues perhaps we can work together to find a solution to this problem.
    Thanks J

    I have fixed the issue
    The steps I used were
    1. restore ATV under //settings/general/restore
    2. log out then in with apple id //setting/computers/turn off-on
    3. unplug router for 30 sec
    4. restart macbook with no windows being kept open
    5. when macbook restarts open iTunes
    6. log out then onto home sharing under advanced tab
    7. make sure sharing is enable under //iTunes/preferences/sharing/ then click share my library on local network
    8. it should work after this point and come up in ATV
///side note the sharing tab on iTunes won't show up in the sidebar of iTunes not certain if it's suppose to///

  • Why did Home Sharing suddenly stop working for PC libraries?

BACKGROUND: Ecosystem consisting of one PC with medium-sized iTunes library (7,000+ songs and 3,000+ photos), 2 Mac Minis, two MacBook Airs, Apple TV 2, Airport Extreme Base Station, Airport Express in extender mode, Windows Home Server 2003 with iTunes server module, iPhone 4s and iPad 2.
All the latest updates installed. Airplay, Photostream, iCloud and Home Sharing all installed and everything working happily, as advertised. I've had other issues, like everyone else, but Home Sharing has worked pretty much without fail for as long as I can remember -- years.
THEN,  SUDDENLY: On the evening evening of Sunday October 23, 20011, Apple TV stops seeing "Arthur's Library" -- my main library, located in the latest update of iTunes, on my PC.
AND IT VANISHES ELSEWHERE: I click on "Arthur's Library" and the B&W "wheel" ground for about ten seconds -- then the library disappeared. Figuring it might be an Apple Tv issuem I opened my Air, loaded iTunes, attempted to load "Arthurs Library" and the same thing happened. Library just disappeared.
So I go to my PC and fiddlewith iTunes.
Turn off home sharing, reboot for the heck of it, turn home sharing back on.
And the library reappears on Apple TV and other home share devices...
Only to DISAPPEAR when I tried to load it, exactly as before!
So I dutifully go through all the other trouble-shooting steps suggested by the oft-quoted Apple Support article, plus some others:
    1. I turn off photo sharing, because I had been doing this over the weekend, just prior to failure of home sharing. No dice.
    2. Power off both routers. Wait. Restart. No joy.
    3. Check firewall settings. All as they should be,
    i
    * I kind of doubt it's a router issue, because home sharing works just fine with the Macs.
    * Kind of doubt it's an interference issue, because Airplay from my iPhone and iPad to the Apple TV works like a charm.
    * Can't think of any updates of any kind installed in between "all systems go" and "FAIL"
ANOTHER CLUE? The little "Airplay" icon that normally appears in the bottom right-hand corner of ITunes on my PC has disappeared. So maybe the issue is BONJOUR? Okay, I go into Services, and Bonjour is running. I stop it, restart it, then restart iTunes on my OC, ditto on my MacBook Air. No joy. And now, as I'm writing this, I notice a...
SECOND MYSTERY! Suddenly, my Mac can't load the library from my Windows Home Server 2003 installation, which has NOTHING TO DO with Home Sharing. This thing has ALWAYS worked everywhere before. Now the wheel just grinds endlessly, whenever I try to load the library on my server.
I'm out of my depth, guys. HELP! And thanks in advance for your time and advice.

Well, the first problem resolved itself just as mysteriously as it arrived, spurred perhaps by yet another Windows patch or Who Knows What. The second problem persists. Suggestions?

  • Can't figure out how to use home sharing

Since the latest couple iTunes updates, my family and I can not figure out how to use home sharing. Everyone in our household has their own iTunes, and for a long time we would just share our music through home sharing. But with the updates, so much has changed that we can no longer figure out how to use it.
I have a lot of purchased albums on another laptop in the house, that im trying to move it all over to my own iTunes, and I have spent a long time searching the internet, and everything. And I just can't figure out how to do it. So.... how does it work now? I would really like to get these albums from my moms iTunes, onto mine. I would hate to have to buy them all over again.
If anyone is able to help me out here, that would be great! Thanks!

The problem im having is that after I am in another library through home sharing, I can't figure out how to select an album and import it to my library. They used to have it set up so that you just highlight all of the songs you want, and then all you had to do was click import. Now I don't even see an import button, or anything else like it. So im lost... I don't know if it's something im doing wrong, or if our home sharing system just isn't working properly.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Family Sharing, Home Sharing or iTunes Match?!

    I'm confused.
    MY PARTNER
My partner and I have the same of everything - an iMac each, an iPhone each and an iPad each.
He has a lifetime of music, video and book purchases and I don't have any, and he is subscribed to iTunes Match.
He is away from home 4 days per week, so prefer to Sleep or Shut Down his iMac to save power.
    ME
iTunes on my iMac is logged in under his account name so I can access his purchases.
iCloud on my iMac is setup under my Apple ID for syncing calendars, contacts, passwords etc.
My iPhone and iPad are logged in under my own Apple ID for iCloud, iTunes & App Store purchases.
    FAMILY SHARING
I have set this up today with my my partner being the main account holder.
    SETUP
Wondering if this setup is ideal or if anything should be changed?
Have tried Home Sharing but find most of the time it times out and is painful waiting for library to display on my iPad or iPhone, and also as he is away from home 4 days per week, his iMac is either Sleep or Shut Down, but I'm guessing Home Sharing or Family Sharing is way to go?
What I want to do is have his music show up (sync?) on my iMac so I can play his music. I also want to import purchased Kids DVDs on one iMac only - so presume his would be better than mine so everything is kept together in one master iTunes library? I want to be able to stream to Apple TV kids movies, and play Playlists on my iPhone or iPad.

I don't use either Home Sharing or Family Sharing but from what I have read it sounds like FS is what you need.  I don't know about all the details and realize that it is unlikely any one service will have all features you want.
Tunes: How to share music and video - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2688 - about Music Sharing and Home Sharing
Alternatively, just keep his Mac turned on.  Mine has been running 24/7 since 2006.  Yes, it uses a bit of power but no more so than leaving on a security light or two.

  • Can you download music to networked home shared labtop?

Ok, I finally got the home sharing to work on my laptop...My itunes is on the desktop computer and I home shared it to my laptop... I updated to the latest version on both.  Now when I burn a new music cd to the desktop computer, it also show up in my library on the laptop.  So say I want to download a song that is on my laptops c drive to my itunes library.. how do I do this?  I tried to do it and it goes straight to the music library... so then I tried to drag it over to my (shared) library, and I get this circle with a red line thro it... I am confused, why won't it let me?  I even backed it up on a cd and it wouldn't go to my shared Library... what is the point of this home sharing?  just to listen to music or what?  Does this mean I will have to do all of my downloading of music on the desktop still?  and you know on the laptop, under file it doesn't even list burn playlist to disc, why not?

For purchased items you can select in settings (next to the import button at the bottom of the Home Share page) to automatically transfer new purchases.
This will not work for ripped CDs. I use the import function.
First select the view in Home Share to Music and then filter it by selecting not in my library. Select the songs I want and click Import

  • Home sharing? two different sign on's on same computer

Can you share music from two differents windows log on accounts on the same computer.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Certainly it is. You can use different ID's for iTunes and home sharing.
Just make sure that you are all logged into iTunes with your own ID, but that you use the same ID (doesn't matter who's it is) on all devices when setting up home sharing.

  • Home Sharing Music iOS7

    iTunes 11.1 and iOS 7.0.2.
I can see my Shared Libraries from my desktop Mac, but when I try to play a group of songs the songs fly by without any sound after less than a second.  I can confirm that home shareing works just fine by trying to connect with a Mac Mini, which streams the songs just fine.  The Mac is wired to the router, but both the Mini and the iPhone are on the same wifi network.
Perhaps a bug?  Or is there an IPv6 issue?  I can't see any way to force iOS7 to use IPv6, which iTunes is using.

I spoke too soon.  It solved the issue for a day, but after waking the desktop from sleep it no longer works.
Restarting iTunes, restarting the iPhone, signing in and out of AppleID all don't have any result.
    Haven't restarted the desktop yet.

  • Resolving Apple TV 2 & 3 Home Sharing Issues

I see that there are many users reporting problems with home sharing.
Unfortunately the problems are there to stay home sharing is actually not functional in full in certain scenarios so I thought I would give a summary of my experience
First of all airplay and home sharing have nothing to do with each other so the fact you have issues with airplay or that airplay works does not warrant any behaviour for home sharing
My set up is as follows
    Apple TV 3
    iMac
Set of iOS devices iPhone 5/5s/6 iPad 3/Air
    Netgear NightHawk 7000
I have the largest iTunes library on the iMac running the latest Mavericks OSX.
In general everything works fine when all devices are awake however the moment the iMac or AppleTV goes to sleep this start creating problems
For who does not know the Apple TV 2/3 has a functionality called bonjour sleep proxy, the AppleTV is always visible on the network and retains and IP address even when it is in sleep mode. The other devices like iMac or MacBooks instead may disconnect from the network and loose their IP going to sleep. So before going to sleep the register with the AppleTV so that the apple Tv can wake those up if needed.
This is the theory so if you then launch remote app or go onto the AppleTV menu and look for computers you should see the shared libraries.
    But you don't!
In the remote app the library disappears and when you go into the AppleTVand press computer it starts loading it and then fails or even better tells you home sharing is not active on other devices
    Solution:
There are two solution to the problem
1, Set the iMac or other computer power saving to never go to sleep. This is not eco friendly but means the network card stays on and so does the link to home sharing
    2. Uss standard power saving settings and use an application like Moka WOL. Register your computer MAC address on this app. When you need your home library go into this app and wake up the sleeping computer. The link to computers will go back to working on the apple TV and all will be normal
I am sorry to say that home sharing just does not work because contrary to what apple says the apple tv (and the extreme routers) fail to wake up any sleeping devices with home sharing on the network although they are aware of the existence once those devices loose an IP address is basically dead end

Thanks to the mod to removing my post but here we go again
This is the initial situation with an Apple TV and home library is my iMac running Mavericks
After sending the mac to sleep all devices disappear from remote
If I go to the apple tv and click computers I get the message that home sharing is off...!
the apple tv shows on the router map with an IP address whilst the iMac has disappeared
Despite the iMac console reports that clients are requesting wake the iMac does not wake
    Oct 12 10:34:30 iMac.local powerd[28] <Notice>: Clients requested wake events: [proc=mDNSResponder request=Maintenance inDelta=7198]
    Oct 12 10:34:30 iMac.local powerd[28] <Notice>: PM scheduled RTC wake event: MaintenanceImmediate inDelta=7198.04
At this point i use moka wake on lan to wake up the sleeping iMac that reappears on the network
The console output is correctly reporting the wake and recreating the iTunes server
Oct 12 10:39:30 iMac.local powerd[28] <Notice>: PID 28(powerd) Created InternalPreventSleep "Network wake delay proxy assertion" 00:00:00  id:0xe00002341 [System: DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp]

At this point the screen of the Apple TV shows the items from home sharing in the thumbnails
And browsing of home library is established
In short wake on demand with bonjour proxy fails somewhere. The wake on demand is successful when using magic packets
I wonder why apple devices running iOS (apple tv and iphones/ipad) don't use magic packets instead of this weird real time clock trigger event that seems not to work

  • ITune home sharing stops working if I enalbe WIFI sync for my iPad

I am using iTune 11.2.0.115 (64bit) on win 7 fully updated to May 28, 2014 win-updates.  After upgrading to latest itune 11.2.0.115,  I have noticed when I enable "Sync over WIFI" in my iTune for my iPad or iPhone,  the iTune home sharing icon just disappers from left side panel and will not share no matter what steps I take.  I have read and followed all the steps for trouble shooting home-sharing for itune.  Such as re-install, disable ip6 etc...
I share my media out of a win 7 and I have another win 7, Mac, apple TV, ipad and iphone which they do not see my main libirary until I un-check the sync over wifi.  However Mac and the Other win 7 can see each other's shared library.
I can re-produce this problem each and every time.

  • Home sharing does not work with iTunes 12

I have been using home sharing with iTunes a lot, mainly to stream TV shows from my Mac Pro (2008) to my Apple TV (3rd Gen). But after installing Yosemite and iTunes 12 it doesn't work any longer. My Apple TV finds the iTunes Library, but can't connect with it. At the same time home sharing worked just fine with my iPhone 5 and iPad 2 (iOS 8.0.2). After installing iOS 8.1 home sharing with my iOS devices doesn't work, too – same problem as with Apple TV: iTunes library is found but devices can't connect with it.
I already tried to solve the problem with the suggestions on Apples troubleshooting page:  Fehlerbehebungsmaßnahmen für die Privatfreigabe
    My setup:
Mac Pro (2008) with OS X 10.10 (14A389), iTunes 12.0.1.26, connected via Ethernet and WiFi
    Router: Fritz!Box Fon WLAN 7270
    iPhone 5 with iOS 8.1
    iPad 2 with 8.1
Apple TV (3rd Gen), newest software update, connected via Ethernet
Any ideas, what the reason for that problem could be and how to solve it?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
BTW: Sorry for my English. I am not a native speaker.
    Greetings from Germany

I had the same problem after updating to iTunes 12 and using my iPhone 6.
I have solved it by doing these simple steps:
    1. Turn off Home Sharing in iTunes. Close it.
    2. In your iOS 8 device, Turn on Home Sharing: Settings/Music/Home Sharing
    3. Open back iTunes
It looks like in one of the updates, possibly iOS 8.1, had signed off Home Sharing completely.

  • Only Part of Music Library Home Shared

Is there any obvious explanation for why only 51 of my 293 albums show up on iPad 2 using Home Sharing?

Just to be honest, I find the FAQs annoying.  Most people I know have already been through all the stuff covered in the FAQs, and that is why they post here.  If the answer was in the FAQ, why post?
Home Sharing is extremely buggy in my view.  For instance, there doesn't seem to be a protocol that designates who the master/slave is.  I can have my iPad set for Home Sharing and my PC set for same.  But if I close down iTunes, the iPad acts as if Home Sharing is still active --- the shared library titles and icons all remain, but obviously you can't play anything.  If you reopen iTunes on your PC, evem though you didn't close down home sharing in the File menu, the Home Sharing link is broken, but yet both iTunes and the iPad have no display that notes that --- both appear to be set to Home Sharing.  Then one must launch into the game of logging out of home sharing on either or both devices and logging back in.  Although not 100% reliable, I've found by exiting Home Sharing on the PC and then signing back in, I can reestablish the link to the iPad.  EXCEPT --- if I have made any major changes in my iTunes library, the iPad doesn't perceive these and operates from the previously shared library settings.  So now you are in the business of getting the iPad to sync up to the new library.
I don't know why or how my iPad only recognized 51 of the 293 albums in my library, but the only way I was able to get rid of that "memory" on the iPad, and get it to sync up to the entire library using Home Sharing was to connect the thing up to my PC, and restore it to factory settings via iTunes.
Do appreciate you offering a suggestion, but I believe Home Sharing needs some monitoring features built in so users can see just what the status is... (I know this is anathema to Apple types, but if it doesn't work 100% of the time without user machinations, you need some ways to see what is going on).

  • Help with home sharing

I've just updated to itunes 11 and can't home share, I don't have an import option, can anyone help ?

Are you possibly referring to Family Sharing and making purchases? Home Sharing is just sharing iTunes content across a shared network. If you are having issues with a purchase, see if this support document provides you with some answers. Family purchases and payments - Apple Support
If not, then contact iTunes support for help. http://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html
