Home movies on ATV (1st Gen).

Under "movies" on my ATV (and on Front Row app.) I have movies and/or slideshows that I didn't add, and want to remove them. Conversely I recently created a movie of family photos with music on iMovie, moved to iDVD then saved as an img extension. I burned DVDs without problems. I would like to move it to "movies" on my 1st Gen ATV for showing, but haven't been able to do it. Can you advise me of the procedure to accomplish this, both removing unwanted movies and adding wanted movies to the ATV. Thank you.

Hi!
Open your project in iMovie. Click on "share" at the top of the screen. When the menu appears, click on "share to iTunes". You will get a menu asking you to pick what size you want. Go for the large size for the ATV. When it's done sharing, (may take awhile depending on how long the movie is) if your ATV is set to auto synch new content, it will copy over right away. If not, you can manually synch it, or just stream it. Hope that helps!

  • ATV 1st Gen keeps shutting down - can I swap drives?

Some months back I bought a 160GB ATV 1st Gen to replace my 40GB model. Now, sometimes when I come to use the 'new' one, I often find I can't switch it on and it's dead. When this happens I have to pull out the power lead, re-insert and let it boot up again when all's fine. Until the next time.
Has anyone any idea what could be wrong?
If the problem's terminal for my ATV and it may be a power supply problem or other non-HD problem, can I try salvaging things by 'simply' taking out the 160GB drive and fitting it into the 40GB model which works fine?
    Thanks.

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.] It is app and data safe!

  • How do i transfer movies from ATV 3rd gen to iMac?

how do i transfer movies from ATV 3rd gen to iMac? help!

    You don't - AppleTV 3 store nothing.
Instead (assuming th efeature is available in your country), you download from the internet in iTunes.
Either on the iTunes store home page or in the Movies category you should find Purchased Quicklinks on the right side of the screen - redownload movies there.  Set download quality in iTunes Preferences.

  • HT1498 What has happened to movie rental in 1st gen Apple TV as the option has  disappeared ?

Apple TV now only shows my movies and trailers. Does not seem to want to connect to iTunes Store. Is this Apple shutting down 1st gen Apple TV ?

I suspect what you are ssing is a symptom of a wide-spread issue with ATV's right now [though looks to be primarily Gen 1 units].  There's an existing topic here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/25524317#25524317
Another thread suggested to click "I have this question too" in the thread above, and identify the generation of your device in a reply (As it may affect other generations as well.), so that it's all collected in one place.I was aslo suggested to submit the bug via the feedback page https://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
Looks like Apple sent out a Bad Easter Egg for us 1st gen'rs, but they appear to be working on it. At the very least they are aware of the issue. I doubt it was deliberate as there was no official notice of discontinuation of support.

  • HD videos on ATV 1st Gen?

I have the 1st Gen ATV downstairs and the 2nd Gen ATV upstairs.  I have been succesfully streaming video from my PC to both my ATV's without a problem for well over a year.  Just recently I purchase a GoPro Camera which shoots video in 1080p as an MPEG-4 Movie.  My 2nd Gen ATV plays the content just fine but my 1st Gen cannot seem to reconize the video at all.  The videos definetely exist in the iTunes library but the 1st gen won't even show them as an available movie to play.  It's simply not there.
All other videos from my iTunes library are streaming just fine to both ATV's - it's only these new videos from my GoPro camera that are the issue.  The only difference, from what I can gather, is that these videos are shot at 1080p.

  • ATV 1st gen use with a DVI monitor?

I am trying to use my old 1st Gen Apple TV as an digital announcements unit at my church. It looks like the ATV only allows 480p, 720p and 1080i resolution. I am trying to use a 17" monitor with DVI & 1280x1024 resolution. Any suggestions on how to make it so that the screen doesn't come through squished? I'd rather not have to buy a new monitor/tv if I can avoid it.

if the monitor is displaying a "squished" picture then it means that the monitor does not support what is being sent to it (which is expected as it not a widescreen monitor).
there will be nothing you can do other than use a display that is widescreen (or a 4:3 display that supports widescreen signals).

  • Watching home movies on ATV?

I download all my captured video from my digital camcorder to iMovie. I do not really make DVDs but just go to iMovie and watch selected clips from the Event Library Tab on the left side.
    1. How can I watch these video clips on ATV? Do I have to transfer the clips to iTunes?
    2. Do I actually have to make a DVD project and import to iTunes?
    3. My goal is to select a bunch of movie clips and show my relatives the video on my TV versus everybody huddled around my iMac....how do I do this?
Sorry for the newbie question but thank you for any responses.

I am pretty sure you will need to create a 'project' under iMovie. However, that shouldn't be too difficult if all you really want to do is watch raw footage. Just create the project and dump all your clips into the project and that's it.
Now, to get it to Apple TV from iMovie is nice and easy, sort of. Select your project and go to the 'share' menu option. There is a selection to share, or publish, or whatever, directly to iTunes. Choose that. You're done. Apple TV can then view the home movie from your iTunes library.
Why the 'sort of'? Because publishing to iTunes does not support the full 1920x1080p that many HD TVs have these days. If you want to watch your home movies through Apple TV in 1920x1080, I do believe you're out of luck. In fact, I haven't found a good solution to watch my iMovie projects on my TV in full 1920x1080p.

  • Home movies on ATV via Cloud

A friend of mine is interested in upload his home movies to the cloud, so he can watch on  ATV or iPad.
Is this possible?  If so what file formats are supported?
Can the videos be accessed directly from his windows PC?  If so, how?
    Thanks
    -Evan

The best way is probably by using YouTube.
Upload them to your account, set ot private.  You can even upload videos edited with iPad straight to YouTube using the built-in app, or the web page from your PC.  Set youtube video privacy to private if desired.  Log into your youtube account using the AppleTV.
Can access from anything, Windows PC, Android, iPhones, etc. etc.

  • Watching movies on ATV 2nd gen

I have made about 10-12 movies on FCPX and Imovie 11, and share them and add to itunes. Some of the events are stored on 2 different external harddrives. When I connect the 2 harddrives I can watch the movies in ATV, but if I disconnect them, I can only watch some of the movies. Is there an easy way to make my movies viewable in ATV without having the 2 harddisks plugged in?

Rented movies will not play on a 5th Generation iPod.
Do you have Movies turned on in the View Options in iTunes? (Not sure if you're saying "Movies" doesn't show in the iTunes list or on the iPod.) On the iPod, look for Movies under the Videos menu.

  • What happened to the home screen button from 1st gen iPad? Can't close apps.

I received a 1st generation iPad as a regift. It worked fine until I erased and synced it with my iTunes and other devices. Instead of the home button, it had that little circle in the corner to get you back to the home screen (don't know what that's called). Now that I've synced, that circle/button is gone, and the home button doesn't take me home. I am stuck in whatever app or settings screen I open, and can't close it without a full reboot. I'm not sure what ios it was using before I reset amd synced, but now it is using 5.1.1. Is this the problem? Any fixes?

If the unit has NEVER been jailbroke, first try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...  Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • Will Time Capsule replace an ATV 1st Gen?

Will the Time Capsule act as a replacemnt for my aging ATV1st Gen? It has a large HD capacity and wireless streaming, so will sync with iTunes and stream content to my Airport Expresses?
    Thanks.

No. Time Capsule is a router and back up repository. It will not stream data to your TV.

  • Apple TV 1st Gen not in iTunes devices or preferences

Not sure how many other people have had this problem, but if you find that your 1st gen Apple TV disappears from iTunes devices and preferences this is what I had to  do to get it all back:
In brief I believe this is linked to the email @mac and @me alias's and my inability to keep everything in sync.  If this is obvious to you my apologies, but looking at the threads out there I think more than one person has this problem.
I had a 1st & 2nd gen Apple TV, an iMac with Lion, an iPhone 3GS and iPad 1st generation not talking to each other - they had all communicated perfectly well over the last few weeks and months (post and pre Lion upgrade).
A few days ago (after the latest iTunes update 10.4.1 (10)) my 1st Gen Apple TV disappeared from the devices section of iTunes and so after much reading of communities to find an answer (no joy) I decided to remove it from the iTunes Apple TV sync menu in iTunes preferences.  I then couldn't get it back and it disappeared from the iTunes menu.  Heres how I fixed it:
When Apple changed the mobile me accounts from @mac.com to @me.com I started using both, e.g. [email protected] & [email protected]
My iTunes account on my iMac was set up to my @mac alias but I turned on home sharing with my @me email address.
All my devices listed above were set up for home sharing (except ATV 1st gen) with my @me alias and worked fine until recently
In the last week I have regularly had issues with my 2st generation Apple TV password / email alias not being recognised by the iTunes store.
In addition my iPad, iPhone and iPod touch have also had issues with the remote app with both Apple TV's where they have 'disappeared' from within the remote app.
Today I lost everything on every device.
    Here's how I fixed it:
Factory restore Apple TV 1st gen and set up with @mac.com email address details (not my @me email alias)
As above for Apple TV 2nd gen
Turn off computer, iPad, iPhone, BT Home Hub, Netgear Wireless router, unplug Apple TV 1st generation & Apple TV 2nd generation (mains and HDMI).
Go to shop to buy gin and tonic ingredients
Turn on BT home Hub and when completely booted -
Turn on Netgear router and when completely booted (make G&T during this time) -
Turn on computer and launch iTunes
Plug in Apple TV 1st Generation and select general > computers and the 1st option with the infinity logo
Apple TV 1st gen appears in iTunes (phew, drink G&T))
Register Apple TV in iTunes, rename it (to whatever) and thank goodness everything back to normal albeit with long re-syncing (but that's why I bought a seperate wireless router from Netgear in the first place, so not so bad).
modifyed my home sharing account details in iTunes from my @me email to my @mac email alias
Turned on iPad and changed home sharing account from @me to @mac
Apple TV 1st Gen 'appears' when I select add shared library along with iTunes from my iMac on the iPad
turn on iPhone 3Gs and repeat the above (as per iPad) - again everything suddenly worked again
Plug in Apple TV 2nd Gen and changed home sharing, itunes account to my @mac account from my @me account (NB: I was able to see my iMac in the computers menu on the ATV 2nd gen using my @me email alias before changing it)
2nd Gen ATV appears for the first time in a few days back in the remote app.
    All back to normal.
Now this may be blindingly obvious to you, but just in case it isn't, I thought I'd write it all down in the hope it helps someone.  It may not be the email alias, it may just be resetting everything, but I did try that first before fixing it using the steps above.
    Best wishes.

I assumed that by using time machine to import everything onto the new iMac that the new machine was effectively the "old machine". Maybe not. It was set to sync to the old mac, so will try setting up  the Apple TV again on it's computers tab.
Still worried that I can't find the "find Apple TV's" option in iTunes prefs though.

  • Can you play home movies from imovie on atv?

Can you use imovie to play home movies through atv?  If so, how is it done?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
From the iMovie share menu. choose share to iTunes. Choose an appropriate size for your content (no point choosing an HD size if your content isn't). If you have an Apple TV 1, limit your choice to those options that are designated for the Apple TV, if you have an Apple TV 2, you can select the extra options designated for the iPad.

  • Apple TV 1st Gen not syncing

I've been using my ATV (1st Gen) for years, but shortly after I installed iTunes 10.5 I can no longer sync it.
I tried everything, I even reset to factory defaults, re-installed itunes, reboot router (D-Link DIR-825). My computer (Windows XP) and the ATV are on the same GigEthernet LAN (although the ATV is only Fast Ethernet). I can still rent movies, watch youtube, etc, but I can not sync anything.
When I try to  "Add iTunes Lybrary", I enter the code on iTunes (which not always appears) and i get an error Apple TV is not responding: "Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689" alert in Windows".
I have not changed anything on my PC or LAN (other than installing iTune 10.5 a few days ago). Windows firewall is disabled and McAfee has ports 123, 3689 and 5353 open. Even if I disable McAfee Firwall, I get the same error.
I'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue.
    Thanks!

OMG, I finally found the solution based on this https://discussions.apple.com/message/10041310#10041310
"Apparently this can happen when you watch a large HD movie from the computer on the apple TV it seems to kind of clog it. Nothing to do with firewall settings."
Based on this I went to eddit --> prefferences --> General and unchecked movies and tv shows. After that it worked! Well, at least so far...What is very interesting is that it is still syncing movies, since it is the default setting the first time (remember, I did a factory reset too) I sync the ATV. Unbelieveble how much time I spent ont this.
I hope this helps someone out there.
