Home movies (super 8) converted to DVD - then edit in i-movie
Hello. I think this topic was raised b4, so I am sorry to repeat the issue. I am having super 8 film transfered to DVD, then I want to edit. What file extension should it be saved as? I believe there is a program to convert dvd files to quicktime? If so, which is the best program so that I can edit, add music ect. The folks that are converting the film are telling me the DVD will be closed? I would really appreciate any assistance once can offer.
You want them to make data DVD using the DV Stream format.
They can fit about 20 minutes on a single DVD and any version of iMovie can import it.
Costs more (more discs involved) but you do not want them to make MPEG-2 files of your original footage.

I had old 8mm movies converted to dvd. I then used "rip it" and imported to imovie. In the event library a complete person is shown on a clip. However, when I move that clip to the project the tops of peoples heads are missing in the playback. I have used standard (4:3) because the cut is lower in widescreen. How do I fix this problem?
Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think? -

If these are personal movies and you have the original files (that you created the DVDs from), use those instead. Converting to DVD then back reduces quality.
And as Skydiver119 noted, it is illegal to break the encryption on commercial DVDs, even if you own the DVD. -
Rendering while converting from DVD using MPEG Streamclip or Cinematize
Is there anyway to make rendered .mov file, while converting from DVD to .mov, using MPEG Streamclip or Cinematize for final cut pro?
Thanks.Are you asking if there's a way to export from mpegstreamclip so you don't need to render when you edit with the file in fcp? If so, yes... (sorry couldn't resist).
What format is your sequence in fcp (make the timeline active and hit command(apple)-zero? Note the pixel dimensions, frame rate and compressor settings and set the quicktime options in mpegstreamclip export dialog to match them. You should be good to go.

I want to edit Canon 7D movies on 64 bit system
I would like to be able to edit movies from my Canon 7D, 5D Mark II, and Panasonic ZS3 (espicially the lite movie version). I am mainly a still photographer but from time to time will do film clips. What I would like to do is splice movies together, and remove parts of clips. I am sure the more I learn the more I want to do. I would also like to be able to create one new music file from a few seperate files. I use showit web and the program can only use one music file so the solution for a longer slide show is to join files to create one new one.
I have no movie editing experience. I have been reading a lot of on-line reviews and rarely does the review mention problems with 64bit systems, but posts of uses have made me realize my 64 bit Vista may be a problem. Should the latest version of Elements run on a 64bit system?
One thing that appeals to me about Adobe products is I can usually find books that help me self teach myself. Hopefully there will be books on Elements.

Thanks for your reply. My understanding is the first thing I should do is convert the files then edit. Right now my goal is to take vacation clips and make one video out of them. I am guessing with Quick Time I can convert to one format or would it still help to have Elements for the coversion?

I had all my old home video's and super 8 movies converted to DVD's. Since I will move back to Europe I asked the company to convert them to PAl system. I just got all the DVD's for a lot of money, but I can not play any of them on my MAC book.(I think that is because they were burned on zone 1 dvd's and my lap top works with zone 2.
I wonder how I can make them work on my macbook..? I intended to start editing those movies so I need to be able to play them on my mac. Is there a way to copy them to zone 2 DVD's and or to zone 0 dvd's and where do I get those free zone or zone 1 recordable dvd's?

The Apple TV 2 will play all the content in your iTunes library that your Apple TV 1 does. It can no longer sync any of it but can stream it all just as the older model did. Airplay is a different feature that lets you stream from an iPad/iPhone, the Apple TV 2 has Airplay the first didn't.
You can still sort and search content by genre, it still marks content watched and unwatched and mainly still lets you organise much as the Apple TV 1 did, with one exception. It doesn't do nested folders, so the ability to tag a movie as a show (ie James Bond) and have all the associated movies in a James bond folder has gone and it lists all these movies individually.
It has a similar situation with TV shows. It will put all TV shows in a series in a folder as the older one did, but the new one lists each series separately whereas the older model would put all the series in one folder.
Not nesting folders is a bit of a pain with large libraries and whilst I don't like it, it's more or less the only compromise I have to make and of course I get additional features too. -

I just installed Snow Leopard 10.6I would recommend that you convert the DVDs to Apple Intermediate Codec, then edit your movies, then share the final movie in mpeg4 (h.264). This will preserve the most quality. However, the method I will describe will also work to convert your DVD directly into MPEG4.
1) Download and install the Apple MPEG2 QuickTime Component ($20) - available online from Apple.
2) Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
3) Start MPEG Streamclip
4) Insert your DVD into your Mac. If DVD Player or Front Row starts automatically quit those.
5) Open a Finder window. Navigate to your DVD to the Video_TS folder.
6) Drag the .VOB files from the Video_TS folder and drop then into MPEG Streamclip.
7) If MPEG Streamclip offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes.
8) Use FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME to convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec (or h.264 if you prefer)
9a) Optional: You can deinterlace your footage in this step, if you like
9b) optional: If you know the date and or time of the footage, name your file
clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss
(let mpeg streamclip provide the extension). This will provide metadata that iMovie will use to put the event in the right year and month.
9c) Optional: If you don't want to make one huge clip out of your DVD, you can make smaller clips by using MPEG Streamclip. Move the cursor to the "in" point of the clip, and press i. Move the cursor to the "Out" point of the clip, and press o. Then do steps 8 through 10 and repeat until you have done this for all clips you want.
10) Save the resulting file in a place where you can find it, like your Desktop.
11) Open iMovie.
12) In iMovie, choose FILE/IMPORT/From File and choose the file you saved in steps 8, 9, 10.
13) iMovie will generate thumbnails and you can edit. -
How do I find the chapters within a Homemade DVD when it has been converted via Handbrake to MP4 and editing ready on Quicktime Player. I want to get chapters only out of the movie that has 23 chapters so I can edit one chapter at a time. . If you included the chapter information originally contained on the DVD as part of your HandBrake conversion, then it will be located in the "Text" track of your converted file. Did you actually check the "Chapters" tab in HandBrake before converting the DVD content to ensure the chapters were to be included in final export? I.e., not all HandBrake presets automatically include a "Text" (Chapter) track. -
Hi apple users, I am in need of your expertise. I have a mov file and mp4 file which I need converted to DVD. However IDVD quality is terrible and wondering if anyone can help!?
I created project in iMovie then exported it to MP4 and also MOV file at highest definition possible + I added it to iDVD and had a number issues about encoding errors regarding the mp4 file. MOV worked but the quality was terrible.....

I have updated iDVD and iMovie.
I even bought the iSkysoft app from the mac store and that was terrible too.

On both a MacBook Pro, an Acer laptop and my Mac Tower. I would love to think that it is a problem with the playback system, and that if I merely send the file off to the duplicator they won't have the same problem. Maybe that is the case...I don't know if I have a choice rather than sending it off to see. But it happens in the same spots, in the same way, on all three of the players so I'm a little reluctant to have faith.

Of course, but in the case there is no more 'original project.' It is gone like the wind, stolen along with his computer and backups.
I think I am stuck using one of two files as my master: a DVD he burned where I only see the stutter/vibration/jitter once, or the mpeg2 file where I see it three times. Hopefully, the duplication house can rip if off of one of them and not see the jitter. I know that in audio, my personal filed, you can do a lot to enhance already existing sound--EQ, compression, tape saturation emulation software, etc. I guess I'm hoping there is some kind of analog to the video world that address jitter after a source has been printed--if indeed the source has been printed to be jittery.

I am trying to edit a home movie on iMovies on a mac book air. The movie is on a dvd but when I try to import the movie onto iMovies I get a message saying there are no importable files. I've downloaded the macx converter software but I can't seem to download the movie into that either.
Chris , thanks for the prompt reply. The dvd was produced by a third party that I found on line . I had a number of old mini digital video cassettes from a Sony Handycam. I can play the DVD's on my laptop but I can't edit them on iMovies to delete a lot of the rubbish on them. I have five DVD's and three downloaded without any problem but the last two are according to iMovies non importable.

I read the thread question differently than you did I think. I did not think the DVD in question was a commercial DVD. However, you have much more experience in this discussion board than I do. You probably have seen this question many times and assumed (apparently correctly) that it was a commercial DVD.
I was answering the question based on it being a DVD created within a work/home environment that is needed to be put on the iPad. I have been toying around with that exact process in the past week. Work training videos etc, that I have created, put on DVD then downloaded to my iPad for travel and display.

After creating a new slideshow I export it with the setting HD 1080p it is then saved as a .mov i then create a dvd in idvd and the quality is not as good as the original photo's when viewed on the monitor or a TV, am i doing something wrong?
DVD's are only 640 x 480 (interlaced), so yes, the quality is not nearly as good. You should probably create your .mov in DV format to best match the DVD format

Why does my IMAC super drive recognize data dvd's but not movies?
My 27" Intel Imac recently stopped playing dvd movies. The drive still recognizes data disks but not movies. When I insert a dvd movie the drive makes noises for 30 seconds then eject the disk.
Have you changed region codes on movies? It will only change for a total of 5 codes.

You can store just what you want on the external. Just set up folders for what you want. I have a music folder, movies and TV shows, and pictures folders. I also have mine partitioned for OSX and Windows. I have a few files I need if I am running on windows so I keep them on the windows side. I always keep a back up of my documents and a few other files it is a pain to download on the external.
You can also copy every folder and file on your machine to the external if it is big enough. This is a true copy not a back up file generated by a back up program. I like to do this if I get adventuresome and plan to do some major experimenting with my software. Saves having to reload everything if it crashes.
