Home Network and accessing all hard drives on the network

In 10.4, when connecting to another computer on my network, I was able to connect to any disk drive that was connected to any computer on my network. With 10.5, it seems I cannot do that. All I seem to be able to connect to is the home account (in my case, frankmlinar). Did something change or is there a setting I do not know about?
One of the reasons I ask is that I serve my own web site, which is located at .../library/WebServer on one of my computers. I want to be able to access the files from wherever I am. I also like access to all files at any time without running all over the place.

It sounds like you are logged in as Guest (which only has access to each users home directory and drop box). If your navigating to the server via Shared in the sidebar, it should say the name of the user you are logged into that server as. It defaults to Guest. If it is Guest, click the Connect As button and log in as the desired user. You should then be able to see the share points (hard drives etc) you expected.
{quote:title=frankmlinar wrote:}My definition of persistent for use below is: When logged on as a registered user, the computer remains logged on and does not revert to Guest when clicking on various computers or drives in the finder and then returning to the logged on computer in the finder.{quote}
So this is the behavior you want. Correct? You want to only log in once and not have it revert back to being logged in as Guest if you navigate somewhere else and then back again? Correct
So, what you are seeing is this:
Step 1) Click on the server in the sidebar. It automatically, by default, logs you in as Guest.
Step 2) Click on the Connect As button and an Authentication dialog will appear. Login as another user (say Bob).
Note: You should be able to see the share points with no problem.
Step 3) Click on the "Desktop" entry in the sidebar
Step 4) Click on the same server as in Step 1 in the sidebar
Expected results: It will log you in as Bob.
Actual results: It will log you in as Guest.
This is behaving correctly (and is how AFP works). If you want it to remain logged in as Bob after Step 4, either create a keychain via the authentication dialog in Step 2 or before Step 3 you double clicked one of the hard drives listed for that server (or single clicked if your in Column View) to mount it.
Just logging in to an AFP server creates a temporary/soft connection with the server, you have to mount something to make it a solid connection.

  • Office 2010 & 2007 - Excel and Access File Locking Out On the Network With Multiple Users

This is also posted in the Office 2010 - IT Pro General Discussions, but was suggested to repost here, since a definitive answer was not found.
    Hi,
An issue that's happening is that Excel and Access files are locking on the network. We're currently using Office 2007 and 2010.
Here are some different scenarios that are happening:
When opening the file it is locked out by “User X” which is the person that has the file locked out and no one else can open the file.
When opening the file it is locked out by “User Y” which is NOT the actual person, but is locked out by “User X” and no one else can access the file.
When opening the file  it is locked out by “…another user” which is generic and no one else can access the file.
The two more common events are incident 1 and 2 with 3 happening the less common.
This message will continue until the sessions are closed through computer management on the file server.
The file server is running Windows Server 2003.
This does happen on both Windows XP and Windows 7 clients.
This does happen for users using Office 2007 and Office 2010.
There are two sets of Office 2010 Users when it comes to patches. Everyone has the most current patches with Office 2010 SP2 while anyone that has Microsoft Project 2010 is using all the current update before Office 2010 SP2.
All users that are using Office 2007 have all the current patches and service packs.
Another variable is that we have users that will leave a file open on the network for 3+ days and after a while it will lock the file out.
Also we have Shadow Copy that runs daily on the system which I'm not for sure if that impacts anything if a file is opening during that time.
Any ideas on how to mitigate the lock out issues would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Binary Process
Edit November 12, 2013: This issue can occur if and if not another person actually has the file open. If the person doesn't have the file open then there is a hung connection which needs to be disconnected by going to the Computer Management of the File
    server.

    Hi Binary,
I know that the description of the hotfix does not relate to the issue. The purpose is to install it for upgrading SMB related file.
A similar issue I encountered before:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/b7fcc59b-52d9-4a02-863a-1a529bcb8cb1/temp-doc-etc-files-dont-close-after-a-file-closes-this-causes-locked-files?forum=winserverfiles
It is resolved by upgrading SMB files so maybe it will help on your case.

  • I can't see my external hard drive on the network.

I can't see my external hard drive on the network. I have a WRT160NL router with USB. I plugged the drive in the USB and set up a share in the router config.

Did you map the drive? It won't show up in Explorer automatically like a jump drive or an external drive plugged directly into the PC will.
You didn't mention the OS you're running, but what you want to do is choose "Map a network drive" and you'll see the router listed as a network device. Click on it and you should see the external drive listed. You can map it from there.

  • How to access my hard drive over the internet?

    Hi,
I would like to be able to access my hard drive while I am away from my desk. I am not running OS X Server. How can I do this?
Also, I am behind an Airport Base Station. Which ports would I need to open up?
Besides my Firewall and my Administrator password, how else can I secure the access?
    thank you....

VPN does not allow you to control your computer remotely, you are probably thinking of VNC. A VPN essentially extends your local network so that you can access it remotely. You can control your host computer to more than you can control any other computer by accessing it over your LAN.
I still think a VPN is the best option, but it's not easy to install (MacOS X server has a VPN with a GUI built in). OpenVPN is a great option, and there are several GUI interfaces for it (look for these on www.versiontracker.com). This is best because it is secure and will allow you to access your entire hard drive.
Like I said in the last post, WebDAV is also an option. This is what a .Mac iDisk is. This will only allow you access a specific folder (or set of folders) that reside in the Apache (var/www) directory. Although you can always make an alias to the apache directory and keep it in your Documents folder.
A third option that I didn't state before because it's probably the least best is to use NFS to access your home computer. This will allow you to access your entire hard drive. The downside to this is that there is no encryption, nor a password. For security, it uses IP or domain addresses. So this is not an option unless you will to accessing your hard drive from a computer (or a few computers) with (a) static IP address(es).

  • Can you share a USB hard drive over the network through an Airport Express?

After asking a few individuals at my local Apple Store, I have been consistantly told that I can plug in a usb hard drive into the bottom of my airport express and share it over the network.
However, after making sure my airport express has the latest firmware (6.3) and even donwloading and installing the airport disk utility I still am not having any luck getting my HFS (journaled) usb 2.0 hard drive to be visible on the network.
I have also noticed that when following the instructions on this apple support document (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AirportUtility/5.1/en/ap2108.html) that when I get to step 3, the option to click disks is grayed out. I assume this supports my theory that the airport express won't share hard drives, can anyone confirm?
Am I doing something wrong? Or were the reps at my store mistaken and the only hardware that can share a hard drive is the airport extreme not express?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the swift reply.
Continuing my investigation I started to come to the conclusion you just mentioned. I am surprised none of the staff at my store realized this. However, at least I know now.
The basis for me looking to this is... With leopard on the eve of its release, I wanted to get a large network accessible storage solution that would allow my wife's and I's Macbook pros to use time machine on the network drive when we were at home. Since we rarely use our laptops while sitting at a desk connected to an external drive, I figured this would be a great idea and started to look into various NAS solutions.
Surprisingly, most generic (netgear, western digital) network drives require you use proprietary software to connect to them, and are only compatible with windows xp. After seeing the options the airport extreme opens up in terms of network storage I figured it would be the best bet.
Do you have any other suggestions besides getting an airport extreme? I would rather not have to buy a full blown mac that I have to leave on 24/7 to share the drives. Or do you see any possible pitfalls to this idea? Such as, would time machine forget to use the network drive after a while since it wouldn't always be available to it when away from home?

  • Could I use a USB hub to connection both a printer and an external hard drive to the time capsule?

I am planning on purchasing a new router.  The Time Capsule looks amazing.  However, I have Macs and PC's in my how.  So, I need to know if I can connect a printer (for all computers) and external hard drive (for the PC's) by way of a USB hub on the Time Capsule.  I've read that you can do this with the Air-Extreme.

    Couple of comments:
You will need to use a powered USB hub to connect multiple devices to the USB port on the Time Capsule
The hard drive for use with the PCs will not be compatible for use with the Time Capsule if it is currently formatted for Windows NTFS, which it likely may be if you have been using with the PCs.
Same info applies to the AirPort Extreme.
The following hard drive formats would be supported:
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    MS DOS FAT32

  • How do you connect a usb printer and usb external hard drive to the airport extreme, as it only has one usb port?

I'm thinking about upgrading my old 802.11g router for a new airport extreme. Can it connect to a usb printer and external hard drive at the same time and acutally work. It only has one usb port on the back.
    thank you!

To add multiple USB printers and/or HDDs, you just first need to connect a USB hub (powered prefereably) to the AirPort's USB port, and then, add the USB devices to the hub.

  • Leopard  - how do I share a USB Hard Drive on the Network

Hi All, All my media is on a USB2 hard drive on my iMac (bedroom PC). I'd like to share the videos with a mac mini running Leopard, which is in the living room. I've shared the folder, enabled file sharing in system preferences, but for some reason, am not being able to see the shared folder on any of my other macs.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I totally agree. It was frustrating that it would add to the sharing list just like any other folder and say it's shared but then not appear on the network on other computers.
Another thing I have noticed when I share a folder on a fat32 drive is that the permissions it displays are different. It will display "Daniel Read & Write" twice and then "Everyone Read", while when I share a folder on a MAc OS Extended (Journaled) drive it displays "Daniel Read & Write", "Users Read" and "Everyone Read". So perhaps this has something to do with it. I did have a quick play and change the permissions to read & write for everyone and still no joy.
I also tried connecting to my imac from my macbook as Daniel which gave me network access to every folder on my imac (even if not shared) but still the FAT32 drive did not appear, but the Journaled one did. I will carry on playing with this but I do think it is a bug in the OS. I never got round to trying this on Tiger, do you know if it was fine there?

  • Backup my external hard drives through the network.

I have a small network at the house. Three computers hooked up to the airport extreme router. Then I have a usb hub connected to the input of the router. To the hub I have 4 external Maxtor 1tb hard drives. Everything works beautifully.
I would like to have two of the external hard drives back up the other two externals.
I tried time machine, special software, Maxtor sync manager nothing works.

I'm having similar issues to that. I have a Maxtor 500GB external drive that I would like to be able to attach to my Airport Extreme and access it that way. I am part of a three computer home network, but I'm the only one running Leopard, and I want the other two computers to be able to use the drive for simple drag and drop backup, rather than TM. However, after much searching, I haven't really got anywhere in figuring out how to set it up. How did you set up your drives going through the network?

  • A Printer and a USB hard drive at the same time

    Hi all,
I currently have an airport extreme (g) but I'm thinking of upgrading to the newer version Airport Extreme mainly because it allows sharing a hard drive. However I noticed that there is only one USB port. I would ideally like to use it to share a printer and a USB hardrive for time machine backups over the network.
An apple salesperson at the Apple store told me it was possible to connect both using a USB hub, but I would like to know if anyone on the board has attempted to do this and if it works properly.
I know there is the time capsule option but I generally don't like all in one boxes.
Thanks in advance for your responses,
    - Dan

I have had a 2.0 USB hub connected to the USP port on my AEBS for almost a year for a printer and a HD. Initially I had intermittent connectivity to the HD but never the printer. As Apple upgraded the software/firmware for the AEBS, the problems have stopped. Reliability has been 100% for several months. Go for it.

  • I want to share my external hard drive over the network

I found a lot of threads and discussions about this, but no answers.
I have a WD My Book External Hard Drive that I'm looking to share over the network. However, when I add the volume to the "Shared Folders" or even a folder within the volume and the "Users:" are grayed out.
When getting info on the volume, Sharing & Permissions says, "You can read and write"
    Any ideas?

    Hi Keith,
Thanks for your response; however, the first screenshot is through the Sharing settings in the System Preferences.

  • How to access external hard drive on the mac via airport TC

I Just bought airport TC 2TB and completed setup. Wi-fi and wired connection are working properly. I can access the Airport TC 2 MB HD from mac mini  but   I haven't seen  that I plugged in 640 MB external samsung hard drive to USB port.
File sharing is active on the Airport Utility
    Airport base station fw: 7.7.3
Anybody has an experience how to solve this issue please share with me. Many thanks in advance

The Samsung needs to be formatted the same as the Time Capsule.......in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    Is it?

  • I trying to add a hard drive to the network

Below is the message that I got.
Advertising a service globally using Benjour requires an area wide hoist name. You can configure your Bonjour settings by clicking edit button in the AirPort Extreme pane of AirPort s settings.
I can't find the edit button.
    Please help

Can you tell us where exactly it is, so that we too can find it? I have looked, and looked and looked. Is it the "Edit" on the menu bar? If so, that was useless... No setting for Bonjour. I am trying to setup my external/Time Machine hard drive, with no luck.

  • Download iOS 8 once to Mac Mini Server and upgrade all iOS devices in the network

Is it possible to download iOS8 only once to the Mac Mini Server and use it to upgrade all eligible iOS devices (iPhones and iPads) in the same LAN?
I tried the following methods and they are just not working:
    1. Connect an iPads Mini with Retina Display to the iTunes on Mac.  I chose Download Only. Once downloaded the iPad Software Upgrade, I upgraded the connected iPad to iOS8.  Then I connect another iPad (used to be on another Mac) to the same iTunes.  I had to download iOS 8 again.  It's not using the same downloaded iOS 8 file. (I did the same thing for an iPhone.  Same result.)
    2. I turned on the Caching Service (not Software Upgrade Service, i.e. for Mac Software) on the Mac Mini Server from the Server app.  I then repeat step 1 above and got the same result.  It seems that the Caching Service does not cache the iOS 8  Software Upgrade like what it does for other apps.  (I think I may need to use some Apple Scripts but I have no such experience.)

Yes, it should work that way.  However, I was told by an Apple Support that there was a problem and thus Server 3.2.1 was unable to do so.
I paid for Server 4 and it better provides the expected Caching Services for both iOS Software and Mac Software through the iOS and Mac App Stores.
