  • Lost folder named "Home" after Leopard upgrade

    This may seem ridiculous but I actually had a personal folder called "Home" on OS 10.4 and when I upgraded to Leopard it disappeared. I thought that it might still be on the computer but that the directory structure might have been corrupted. I used DiskWarrior and was happy to see that the Home folder was still present and had all of the original subdirectories and files. But after rebuilding the directory structure using DiskWarrior the folder still doesnt appear. Can some one help me in transferring the subdirectories and filed to a new folder ... that I will obviously not name "Home"?

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
    Not ridiculous at all. In fact it was rather common back some months ago.
    Apple has a document that should help you fix things:

  • Remote Desktop Connection won't work from Leopard to Windows XP

    Hi, folks:
    I'm unable to connect to my work XP computer via my home iMac (Leopard 10.5.7) using Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection for Mac. The XP settings are correct, I'm connected on my work network VPN, and I don't believe I have any router firewalls causing the problem --- the reason I know this is because I also have an MacBook running Tiger (10.4.11) and it has been connecting to my work PC without any problems. So, this must be a Leopard firewall setting?
    As far as that goes, on my iMac I've got Screen Sharing, Remote Login and Internet Sharing turned on. Again, work network VPN is on.
    I'm getting this error from Remote Desktop Connection:
    "The Mac cannot connect to the Windows-based computer
    This problem can occur if:
    - The Windows-based computer is not set up to accept remote connections
    - The Windows-based computer is not turned on
    - The Mac, or the Windows-based computer is experiencing network problems
    Try connecting to the Windows-based computer again, or contact your administrator"
    Anyone know of a fix? I'd greatly appreciate it!
    Thanks.

    What Firewall setting do you have on your Mac? Try setting it to allow all connections. At least as an experiment.
    Do you have any Proxies set in System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> Proxies? If yes, then is it possible that "Bypass" list is not covering the XP system.

  • Sync with Leopard ical

    Reading the requirements for the new iCal/MobileMe app, it says that Snow Leopard is required.  Does that mean that other computer on my network need to be running SL to access/sync with the new format?  I've been reading the support articles resolving initial problems I had, most were just that I didn't read the directions close enough - but all is well on my MobileMe Calendar and my SL MacBook Pro Calendar.  But I have an older G5 on my home network, Leopard 10.5.8, which can't have iCal upgraded on it, but was wondering if any problems syncing it with MobileMe would happen.  I hope this will resolve the duplicates in iCal that have plagued my iPhone 3GS for a long time (once I sync it).
    Now I wish there was an easy way of cleaning out my Address Book Contacts so what is synced is usable.  Between AOL, Entourage (now Outlook) and I presume Mail, every mail address added to my contacts (especially the ones added when you accept incoming images and it's added to the contact list) has been syncing to my iPhone - making it almost useless.  Many mail lists, etc., have been put into it and I don't want them on my iPhone.
    Oh, and kudos to Apple Support for articles on the iCal changes that helped me resolve my problems.  My main iCal, like I said, is on my MBPro and was having problems but it's all fixed now.  Hope the other devices do as well.
    Tom

    iCal on Macs running Leopard cannot read the new MobileMe calendars until an additional process has been carried out, described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4330
    As to Address Book: the entire contacts list will sync everywhere. You can't partially sync. The only way to remove the unwanted contacts is individual deletion, whereupon they will disappear from every device which is successfully syncing.

  • Boot "Lion" of a usb then use it as i would use "Snow leopard"

    Hey there, this may sound horribly stupid and amature, so sorry in advance
    Im running "Snow leopard" right now and i love it, i dont want to upgrade ( it just works for me )
    BUT!
    i need to use certain software thats only available to "Lion"
    So, is it possible to Boot "Lion" of a usb then use it as i would use "Snow leopard"  in the sense of like, installing software, music and all the stuff like that
    when the usb is in ?
    Then when i turn off the laptop pull out the usb, and boot normally im right back into my familiar home "Snow Leopard" and nothings Changed ??
    Cheers in advance, any help/ suggestions are appriciated !

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    If what you want to do is to install OS X Lion (or Mountain Lion) onto a USB drive and install apps there, you can use it. You just need a USB drive with the space for OS X Lion and your apps. Note that OS X takes about 10 GB, so add the size of your applications.
    First, you have to format the USB drive by using a GUID partition map and "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as "Format" > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
    Then, your USB drive is ready. Now, if you haven't purchased OS X Lion yet, call Apple to purchase it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 They will give you a redeem code you have to insert in the Mac App Store.
    When the download finishes, the OS X Lion installer will show up, so follow its steps. In the window where it asks you for the partition to install OS X Lion, choose your USB drive and the installation will start.
    By default, your Mac will always start up from the USB drive. As you are going to unplug it, after installing Lion, open System Preferences > Startup Disk, and choose the Snow Leopard disk. Then, when you want to start up from OS X Lion, hold the Option (Alt) key while your Mac is starting, and select your USB drive

  • VNC setup in Leopard

    I have an iMac at home running leopard and connected to my Airport extreme base station (new model) through an ethernet cable. I would like to remotely connect to this iMac with my MacBook from school over the internet. I know i must configure a VNC connection but I am a bit confused as to how to do it. From what I gather, these are the steps to take:
    1. Enable screensharing on iMac through systemprefrences\sharing and allow VNC viewers to control with password.
    2. Configure Airport Extreme Base Station port mapping to allow "apple remote desktop" connections.
    3. Use Chicken of the VNC to remotely connect by typing the ip address of my home internet connection followed by the port number....example: 89.94.4.292:5900, enter password and click connect.
    When I do this, Chicken of the VNC does not connect and it gives me error. what am I doing wrong? Do I have to enable "Remote management" under systemprefrenses\sharing also or is it a firewall problem? I would appreciate step by step instructions or a link to a website with instructions for doing this with Leopard. (I've found some but they're outdated). Thank you.

    Enable "remote management" then under settings, enable "VNC Viewers can...."
    Screen sharing is for local network, unless you have .Mac and can use Back to My Mac, in which case you would not need VNC.

  • Networking on leopard

    I am not very good at networking but it seems harder than ever to network with other computers at home with leopard. I can see the computers on my home network and file sharing is on but I cannot seem to connect to them. Can anyone advice me on this? Is this due to the very confusing firewall that now comes with leopard?
    Thanks

    I am having the same problem. Networking on Apple systems has always been very easy, but with Leopard is does not seem to be so easy. I have three computers on a gigabyte ethernet network with a macbook on a wi-fi connection. With Tiger there was no problem accessing and connecting to other computers. But with Leopard, it is very slow or not at all. I can see the other three computers that I should be able to connect to. When I select one of them and click on Connect As, nothing ever happens. Even if it is connected to the computer, it is extremely slow showing me the items on the computer that I can access. There seems to be some major bug or problems with Leopard networking. Anyone having similiar problems or found a solution for it?

  • Partitioning Strategy for a New Hard Drive?

    I just got a FirmTek SATA controller card and 250GB hard drive for my MDD. Now it's time to format and partition it, so I was wondering what considerations should be made in deciding on a partitioning strategy.
    I'm running Tiger OS and associated apps, but I also want Leopard on the drive for future use. I have a database application (DEVONthink Pro) and data for my research that will be expanding in the future (maybe to 50GB). I also do some photo-editing with PhotoShop Elements and image files that may grow to 80GB.
    No music or video files. My OEM ATA drive will be my emergency boot drive and I have an external firewire drive for backups. Thanks for any advice on this.

    OK, now that I think of it, my question is a lot like asking what color car should I buy.
    So, with my minimal experience in what works best in the work-a-day world relative to hard drive partitioning, I have come up with this:
    Go with 3 partitions;
    Partition 1 -- 100GB, Tiger OS and everyday applications
    Partition 2 -- 66GB, Future home for Leopard OS and Leopard specific apps.
    Partition 3 -- 66GB, Database app. & data, PhotoShop Elements & image files
    Would the Tiger OS run faster in a partition by itself? Then put apps in another? Thanks.

  • New installation -v- upgrading

    Would I be better off doing a clean install of Snow Leopard instead of upgrading on my iMac and MacBook Air, both 6 weeks old. As I am new to the world of Mac I already have my documents on a 3rd party disk drive, so I have no issues other than installing a few programs such as iWork.
    Would I benefit more to clean install?

    akcarrington wrote:
    Would I benefit more to clean install?
    You should know that Apple recommends the default install method, which is not what most users call a "clean" install unless the target volume has no OS on it -- for instance, if it is erased or reformatted. Among experienced Mac users, there is no consensus of opinion if a 'clean install' is better or worse, prudent or a waste of time, or whatever.
    My own opinion is that among those that recommend a clean install of some sort, many are basing their opinions on the old (& no longer entirely applicable) install methods of pre-Snow Leopard installers or on vague ideas about "old bits & bytes" that should be purged from the drive that would otherwise somehow cause problems with the new OS. Some just seem to prefer a "hands on" approach or trust their own skills & understanding about what to install more than they trust the programming built into the new installer. Many just don't like the idea of any unused files taking up hard drive space.
    However, some reasons are more specific, suggesting a clean install is necessary in certain circumstances, for instance when the HD has formatting or file system problems, & that in effect it is better to be safe than sorry, since users might not know these problems exist.
    If this was all there was to it, then it would unquestionably be the best general advice. But it isn't.
    For one thing, the new installer has built-in features that depend on a previous installation to decide what to install, such as Rosetta, QuickTime Player 7, & some print drivers. For another, the installer will move certain incompatible applications from an existing installation to an "Incompatible Applications" folder. It also checks the target disk (much like Disk Utility's "Verify Disk") & "phones home" for Leopard-to-Snow Leopard compatibility updates. These steps can be done separately by knowledgeable users & to some extent can be considered no more than conveniences, but that is what many users like about Macs vs. PC's, so that should be taken into account on a user by user basis.
    More importantly, a clean install requires recreating or migrating existing system & user settings & such, sometimes manually, & this is both time consuming & potentially a source of errors or unnecessary hassles, especially among less knowledgeable users.
    My advice is to consider both the pros & cons of a clean install & decide what is best for you.

  • SSH change default port via ssh.plist

    I have to change SSH default port on Snow Leopard server. There's a hint that works with my home snow leopard but don't work on server why?
    This method edit ssh.plist
    <key>Sockets</key>
    <dict>
            <key>Listeners</key>
            <dict>
                    <key>SockServiceName</key>
                    <string>ssh</string>
                    <key>Bonjour</key>
                    <array>
                            <string>ssh</string>
                            <string>sftp-ssh</string>
                    </array>
            </dict>
            <key>Listeners2</key>
            <dict>
                    <key>SockServiceName</key>
                    <string>22022</string>
            </dict>
    </dict>

    Right after the IP Address, I enter a colon followed by the port to which I'm connecting. This works great. I also downloaded an application called CoRD which works really well.
    As an aside I have to say that I'm disappointed at the Apple community for not responding to this post. I'm a long time Windows user (since there was a Windows) and I've always had posts in the Windows Forums answered within 24 hours. I've had questions in the past on other Apple related issues which also have gone un-answered. If this is the de-facto standard .. I'm beginning to get nervous.

  • Total sync environment

    Hey,
    the company I work for is thinking about integrating a mac server in our in environment, now I should search for some information and I hope maybe you can help.
    The general problem is different versions of all kind of data, so the aim is to sync.
    For example:
    I use a Macbook Pro, so what we want to do is totally sync one account on this machine. So wherever I edit a file it is synced on the server as well as on the mobile computer, you know like .mac or now mobil me. But we do not want to go with one of these we want it stored locally. For sure we also want to sync contacts and all those things and like the ability to have apache install, calenders and so on. By the way you should know we plan to use the mac server as an remote desktop server via VNC over SSH so our workers can connect from nearly every computer no matter what operation system they have. They get there desktop just like they left it. (this is just a testing environment, we already know we have to add more servers and xgrid to complete such a project for a larger number of employes but for the testing there are only 8 testers.)
    The second point is backup on the macbook Pro I have a 30 GB partition for time machine so those folders I work with, especially the desktop is backed up instantly because I am that kind of person that likes to replace a old file and later on notices that there was something in the old file which is necessary for the today work, but the file is replaced .. that is what I use time machine for. Now the hole hard disk should also be saved as a backup to the server (just you know incase of an hard drive issue or something). But I am not sure if time machine does what I want because I only want weekly backups and replace the old backup completely.
    And the last point is iphone integration I saw the great keynote about the sync between mobile me and the iphone and I really liked it, but cause of privacy issues our company can not host there files on mobile me, therefore the question is how to do it with a mac server.
    These are my questions and I hope you can help me to answer them.
    Regrades Snoop1990

    I'm not certain it will address all of your points, but you should definitely look into Portable Home Directories (available in Workgroup Manager on your server.) Portable Homes in Leopard will allow you to sync your machine to a server or alternatively, using an external account, a hard drive based account (not specific to any machine) to a server.
    You can also do Time Machine backups to a server, but probably not first to your local drive, and then to a server... I don't think it's that flexible.

  • Mail app issues

    This is more of a Mail app issue, and I've posted the question on that board, but I thought I'd post it here because I'm hoping some admins might have dealt with a similar issues:
    Is anyone having success with clients on Network Homes using Leopard's Mail.app and an IMAP server?
    Things used to work on the same client machines under Tiger, but after upgrading them to Leopard, Mail.app flat out refuses to work.
    Users with portable homes seem to have better luck.
    Some symptoms:
    after working fine for 15-20 seconds, preview pane gets stuck on a "Loading" message. Double-clicking the same email opens it just fine in a separate window.
    auto-fill of addresses in the To: field doesn't work. (The little circle on the right just keeps spinning.)
    Mail.app does not pull any new incoming messages.
    Mail.app refuses to quit cleanly. Force-quitting is the only way to make it quit
    Mail.app randomly needs to "Quit or Quit and Rebuild" the database.
    Thanks.

  • Another Canon HF100 Issue

    Hello All,
    I spent 2 days searching HF100, FXP, 1920X1080 , FCP 6.0...with no solution !
    I recorded .mts files using Canon HF-100 (PAL) at FXP which is 17MB/sec and 1920X1080, Cinema mode.
    In simple english please (no shortcuts) How can I can a beginner like me START configuring - editing - playing these files on Final Cut Pro 6 (iMac intel / Tiger)?
    I copies the entire PRIVATE directory from the camcorder into my computer.
    How do I need to set the easy set up and/or other settings? what are the steps ? at the moment any file ends .mts is not available to be opened nor imported.
    Thanks in advance !

    This is what worked for my system. All that I needed to do after the fix was start Log & Transfer and point it at the directory containing the AVCHD files - BTW, you really should start a new thread with your problem.
    On my home system, I could load the video into iMovie08, but FCP would not recognize the AVCHD files. Sometimes reported an error in directory structure. However, at work, they were recognized just fine. Biggest difference between home and work? (They were both running same revs of QT and FCP) Home is Leopard and work is Tiger. But that turned out to be a red herring.
    At home I created a new user, logged in as that user, fired up FCP - Log and Transfer worked just fine.
    Moved the User Data to my main account. Now my main account could use Log and Transfer. Tried to track it down further and one by one tried getting FCP to replace each file in User Data, but it didn't help.
    Bottom line - Go to ~/Library/Preferences (where ~ is your home directory). Rename Final Cut Pro User Data to Final Cut Pro User Data Bad. Rename com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist to bad.apple.FinalCutPro.plist.
    Do them both, then fire up FCP and Log and Transfer should work fine. Now if you have keyboard layouts or window layouts, you can move them from Final Cut Pro User Data Bad to your newly created Final Cut Pro User Data.
    Try it and post back,
    Patrick

  • How can I reset Keychain password?

    We have a MacMini at home running Leopard. My daughter somehow reset her keychain password and can't remember it, so Mac Mail is unable to log in to her Gmail account. I have admin on the computer, but I can't figure out if there is a way to reset her keychain password so that her Mail will work again.

  • Apple USB modem issues

    I use an Apple USB modem on my G5 Quad to send/receive faxes.
    From Apples Apple USB Modem FAQ: "It is not recommended to attach the Apple USB modem to the USB port of an ADC display or to an external USB hub. This modem works most reliably when connected directly to your computer."
    Yes it does and it did for me for about 2 years with Tiger.
    But with Leopard I get the following errors while booting, when the modem is directly plugged into the USB port of my Quad:
    kextd[10]: IOKitWaitQuiet() timed out waiting to write kernel symbols
    configd[14]: InterfaceNamer: timed out waiting for IOKit to quiesce
    The boot process stalls for about half a minute at these errors.
    And the Quad doesn't shutdown any more. Just displays the desktop wallpaper without icons and menu bar until I do a force power down.
    If I connect the Apple USB modem to an USB hub, these issues and the error messages are gone.
    So I think something is seriously wrong with the driver for the Apple USB modem in Leopard.
    Peter

    I'm sitting at a G4/DP800 at home running Leopard (I have a Mac Pro 2x3 in the office so don't feel bad for me!). The internal modem (info below) simply will not work (modem errors), though it worked fine under Tiger. Thankfully I already had an Apple USB modem on hand (purchased to use with a laptop), and tried it out. It works more reliably, though I've had a few system freezes and I wonder if the modem is involved (see crash log below where it is mentioned).
    I just read on this thread about not using the USB modem attached to the Apple 17" display, which I have been doing; I will try it on the back of the CPU next.
