Home plug question

Hello Guys
I'm not very experienced with home plugs and have a pair set up and running that came with my vision box.
My question is if i want to connect my PS3 via home plug/s do i need another pair or just the 1 plug?
Best BT india advice i have seen yet on these forums:
Q: Someone has hacked my wireless network
A: Try plugging router into your test socket.

Great stuff, thanks for that.
Just one final question, will i need to match it to the exisiting model i have or will any one do?
As stated you just need 1 more plug.
For ease of use/setup you would be better off getting a homeplug to match the ones you have.

  • WRT120N problem with home-plug "TL PA101"

I have bought a WRT120N few days ago.
I have one PC is connected to the router though home-plug "TL PA101".
But I find that the router cannot detect the home-plug in the GUI ->status->DHCP client.
And also the "network magic" ->add device or network map.
But the LED on the router port (home-plug) is twinkle.
The PC cannot access to Internet.
By the way, the connection is OK if I directly plug the cable into the router port.
Can anyone help me about this question?

Did you connect your computer directly to the ethernet slot on the router.. and then check if you were able to go online or not.. then you can also check the DHCP client table (For a valid ipaddress).

  • Can I use the PLEK500 Powerline Home Plug AV2 to cascade two EA6700 routers, plus?

Can I use the PLEK500 Powerline Home Plug AV2 to cascade two EA6700 routers?  In otherwords, can I connect my “main router” to a PLEK500 on the third floor . . . then plug in another PLEK500 in the basement (same power lines) and use the Ethernet socket on the PLEK500 to plug into the second EA6700 in a LAN to LAN cascade?  And, if so, can I also use that second EA6700 to run an Ethernet cable to an access point at one end of the house and a different Ethernet cable underground to an out building where I can connect a third EA6700? Finally, from there to a second out building by connecting an Ethernet cable from the third router, underground again, to a 4th EA6700 in the second out building?  All connected LAN to LAN to the main router?  My problem in a nutshell: the main router is on the third floor with no way to run Ethernet cable to the rest of the house.  If I can make the first cascade via the PLEK500 to the basement router, I have access to run an Ethernet cable, via underground pipe, from the basement to the first out building and from that building to the second out building.  I need wireless access to the lower floors of the main house as well as the two out buildings.

Yes, that is theoretically possible. You just need to make sure that you are using the same circuit for those two power lines to work. Connect iPhone to Wall Charger and Reset, hold both home and power buttons until the iPhone begins to start, this can take about 20 seconds of holding both buttons. If nothing, this means your iPhone has a hardware fault, most likely and hopefully battery.

  • Help.....BT Home Hub question

Hello, I am a new member and hope someone may be able to help me.
I have a BT Home Hub 2 but unfortunately the wireless signal is not making it around the whole house, and this is even with a wireless extender fitted in another part of the house.
My question is, as I have 2 old routers, a netgear DG 834 and also a Speedtouch 330 (USB modem) is it possible to hook up two routers/adsl modems to a single BT line in order to get signals in different parts of the house. If this is possible, I would plug my wifi extender by hardwire into the second router and hopefully sort the problems I am suffering with. I am not very techie, but know a little.
    Many thanks

  • Home Sharing Questions

    Hello,
I have two questions regarding home sharing while I am on vacation. I understand that if I am not on the same network, I will not have access to my files on my iMac or my PC, however, I do have two questions:
    1. If my iMac and my iPad are signed into the same VPN, will home sharing work if I am on vacation? Both my iMac and my iPad will be signed on to the same server.
    2. I have Xfinity as my Internet provider, and they provide hotspots all over the country that are free for me to use. Since my iMac/PC are on thee Xfinity newtwork, if I sign into the Xfinity hotspot while, say in Maine and my equipment is in Florida, will home sharing work?
My fear is that I must be logged into the same network ID, and they will not be available to me. However, I do have two Network ID's (one is a 2.4Ghz and the other is a 5GHz and they have different names, and Home Sharing does work if my AppleTV is on one and the iMac/PC/iPad is on the other.
The same questions I guess will apply to my AppleTV device, however, if I can get access to my Home Sharing on my iPad, which along with my AppleTV device, I will be bringling with me, I can always change the airplay to play on the AppleTV from my iPad.
Even though I have a WIFI Seagate drive that I use as both a backup and storage for my photos (I am a professional photojournalist) I have all my iTunes files backed up on that device (good thing because if an artist pulls their work from iTunes and you store it Apple's Cloud, it will be deleted) and had I not had a backup, all the Celtic Woman concert videos (close to $60 worth) would be gone
Anyway. thanks for taking your time to read this and considered answering.
    George McGinn
    Venice, FL
PS. These questions are important for me as I plan to spend 3 months every year traveling throughout the country doing street photography and travel photography as I also shoot stock for Getty Images, so if my movies and music are especially my Home Movies (I have instructional videos and PDF files in iBooks that I may need access to) are not going to be available, I would hate to drag my desktop with me. I will take my WIFI drive and use its player to play my music, as while I can change the directories on my iMac to point to the external drive, I do not know of a way to do this on my iPad.
If I get a travel trailer to use instead of staying in hotels, I may just bring my iMac with me. But I really would like to leave it save in my house.

The answer to both questions is no.
It only automatically syncs new purchases from the iTunes Store between devices, and even then only tracks purchased after the option has been turned on. It won't do a catch up sync to start with.
Non iTunes Store purchased tracks have to be imported manually.
You can view all the tracks that are in the source library but not in the target library.
Then select them all and hit the import button.
All that will do though is transfer the music, it will not move playlists, etc.

  • Setting up a home network questions

I have a router/modem that is DHCP that my IP provided me with. I have purchased two 5 port switches. One switch is 10/100/1000 the other is 10/100. I plan to hook eight computers together. Please tell me if I am planning this out correctly. The modem/router will hook into the 10/100/1000 switch. My computer will plug into this switch as well as my son's emac G4 as both computers can utilize the speed. The 10/100 switch will also hook into the 10/100/1000 switch and then will have several computers hooked into it. Does this sound right?
The computers are not all in the same room, so we plan to run wire through the wall. I don't know what kind of wire to purchase or jacks. Advice here would be appreciated. Thanks.

As Jeff provided, it is called CAT-5 and there are electrical cover plates to install where the cable is drawn thru the wall - just like an electrical outlet. The cable behind the wall connects into the back of the plate and the front includes an Ethernet insert to connect an Ethernet cable from the router.
Regarding the potential of people stealing your wireless connection, a neighbor must be within 150 feet or so of the wireless router and in addition, you can password protect/encrypt the wireless network so no one can steal your wireless network/internet connection.
I currently live in a nice "Apartment Home" community with an Airport Base Station (Snow) used for my wireless network and my network is password protected and encrypted which is easy to do with an Airport Extreme Base Station or Airport Express. You can also enable a "closed" network which is not broadcasted to others. Some of my close neighbors also have wireless networks - a couple are password protected but a couple are not.

  • S.M.A.R.T. support and plug question on new Quad drive?

    Hello.
I just installed a second hard drive in my Quad for my media files and before I transfer all my data to it I have a couple questions--
First, here's the drive info: Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 ST3400832AS 400GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive with NC
    1) I installed it in the lower bay so I plugged it into the last/terminating connector with the boot drive being plugged into the first one. Does it really matter which drive is connected to which plug? I know that on my old G4 it did matter, but that was a parallel ATA, not a serial ATA like the Quad.
    2) When I installed the drive, I zeroed all the data and formatted it as Mac OS+ (Journaled). I'm not exactly sure, but I think before I reformatted the drive it did show s.m.a.r.t. support. Whether it did or not, it now says "not supported" at s.m.a.r.t. status. Is there a way to enable this? Does anyone know anything about this?
    Thank you.

it doesn't matter which bay you place the drive(s) in. SATA channels are each separate and their is no master/slave relationship (there actually never was, but that's a different story).
As far as SMART goes, seagate sometimes ship their drives with SMART disabled. Then they include a software application to turn it back on as well as do some testing. As you can imagine the software is Windows only (though I think they have a version for Linux). You can check on the seagate tools at:
    http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/
However, I think OS X should have been able to enable and read the SMART status from your drive, so I'm not sure why it isn't working. I have no Seagate drives in any of our Macs, so I can't check for you, perhaps someone else can.

  • Home Page Question

    Hi Guys,
Appreciate your help on what I assume is an easy solution and probably is a stupid question. There are items on the home page that I would like to delete or move from the 2nd page to the 1st (or vice versa). Can't figure out how to do that. Any advice is appreciated.

By holding any icon for a short while, all icons will appear to wobble, then they can be dragged about to be ordered in any way you wish. By dragging an icon to the edge of the screen the iPhone will allow the icon to be placed into the next home screen.

  • Home theater question

    Good evening!
I've posted this question here because I'm not sure where else to put it. It's quite possible the Mac forums isn't even the right spot, but here I am. If a mod feels this needs to be moved, go ahead.
Anyway, our house has speakers built into the wall in all the different rooms. These wires (the old fashioned speaker wires where you clip the bare wire into the back of your stereo) come out of the wall in a bundle and go to a room selector switch.
In the past we've had our stereo plugged into this and we used a 400 cd jukebox to play music. However for christmas we received a 2tb external drive and a PS3. We've now got all our music on the external drive. The drive is plugged into our intel Mac. The PS3 wirelessly connects to this and plays our music through our tv (the tv is connected to the PS3 with an hdmi cable but has available rca jacks).
So the question is, how can we hook this hodge podge setup into our built-in speakers on-the-cheap? (I'm a teacher and my wife is currently unemployed...)
    Thanks so much!

If the speakers are connected to a receiver, stereo or some type of amp then sure that's pretty easy. You would can setup an air tunes system with a Airport Express (get them from the Apple Refurb store) and stream the music wirelessly from the iMac to the AEX which is wired to the the amp or receiver. Here is a link to the Airport Express so you can get a more clear concept.

  • Simple Home Sharing Question

I'm sure this is a basic question but I can't seem to find the answer.  Please any help us MUCH appreciated!  Here's the deal... I'm a long time iTunes and iPhone user and have a large music & apps library.  My wife has her own computer and recently got an iPhone... so I set her up using my Apple ID so we could home share.  This worked okay but with the release of iOS5 and iCloud... I'm confused.
My question is... how does iCloud play into this now?  We now have multiple comptuers and iPhones using the same Apple ID... so how does Find My Friend & Find my iPhone work?  How does syncing with iCloud work?  Will it seperate our contacts?
Last question... how would YOU set this up?  I don't want my wife have to repurchase the same music and apps... but she has her own laptop and iPhone.
    Thank you!

I assume that if you are actually using the laptop to stream photos or music to the ATV, then it won't hibernate?
The details of that issue depends on whether or not you've got "wake on network access" enabled. Here's a cut and paste of the info from the relevant troubleshooting document:
    8. Cannot access my library when my computer is asleep
In order for Apple TV to access your library while the host computer is asleep, "Wake for network access" must be turned on.
Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and check (enable) the "Wake for network access" option.
In addition, the network that the host computer and the Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) is connected to must support Wake on Demand feature. This works by partnering with a service running on your AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule called Bonjour Sleep Proxy.

  • Home Theatre question

    Hello!
I need to know what is needed to hook up my computer with Xtreme Gamer to my 42" LCD TV. The TV? has a Sony 5. surround with RCA hookup. I don't want to buy a computer-speaker system.
I heard you can get 3.5mm to RCA coversion cables, but will this work? Most cables I see are a single 3.5mm to two RCA.
    Please help out a noob!!

You would use all the output jacks on the back of your sound card IF you were connecting it directly to a set of 7. surround sound speakers designed specifically for computers. The difference between computer speakers and home stereo speakers is that computer speakers are self-powered, meaning just how it sounds. You'll notice on desktop computer speakers they have a power cord tha runs to them. Any amplification happens independently of the sound card or computer that they're connected to. Where a home stereo speakers are powered by the amplifier or receiver that they're connected to. Home stereo speakers (except some powered subwoofers) only have a left and right chanel wire going to each one, and no power cables. Any amplification is done by the amplifier/tuner/receiver, not by the speakers.
Sorry, I got off track a little bit.
So, you would connect your 3.5 phono plug to one of the outputs on your sound card. (Generally, the green one is the one to use for a single cable. Not always, but usually.) Then, find an empty input on your Sony receiver. Red goes to red, the other color to the other color. Some use black, some use white. But they all use red. (Because the R in Red goes with the R in Right. Makes it easy to remember.)
Then, you can either use the virtual 3D settings in the Creative Console to adjust your listening preferences, or use whatever controls your Sony receiver has to adjust the sound how you like it.
This won't give you true surround sound, though. If you want true surround sound, you either need to buy/borrow/steal a set of 7. or 5. surround sound computer speakers, or your Sony receiver needs to have RCA inputs for front left/right, rear left/right, center, and subwoofer.
Usually, home stereo receivers won't have that many inputs for surround sound. They'll use a single optical input. But your sound card doesn't have an optical output, so that doesn't help anyway.
The single cable connection is easy though. And it's cheap...that cable should be under twenty dollars, maybe even under ten dollars. Try it and see how you like it. Unfortunatly, if you're like most people, you're going to have parents/room-mates/a wife/children/neighbors who don't want to hear the gunfire and explosions of Call of Duty at two in the morning, and you'll end up using a headset anyway.
