Home Share Question

I have Home Share set up on my laptop as well as my husband's laptop and I have transferred songs in the past from his computer to mine. Currently when I launch Itunes on both computers, Home Share is active and my computer 'sees' the list of his songs and his computer 'sees' the list of my songs; however it won't let me drag/drop from his list into my music? I am not sure what is going wrong here?

I'm not sure if I know what you mean when you say, quote 'my library'. Is that the name of the library on your remote computer?
Some people have found home sharing a little particular about how you drag and drop. E.g., you drag from remote computer to local computer (and not vice versa), and you drop it anywhere in the "LIBRARY" section of your local computer:
Open up the share library by clicking on the drop down arrow next to the shared computer's name in iTunes (and, as mentioned above, the shared library has to have the icon next to it). See my "Living Room Library" in the screen snapshot below.
Select the tracks on the remote computer you want to copy to your local computer (in my case from the "Music" section of the "Living Room Library").
Drag a song from the panel on the right (in this example, Santana's Oye Como Va, on that remote computer) from the shared library into the local library (you'll see the library visually highlight when the dragged music hovers over the library). You don't need to get more precise than that, because when you drop it while the library is highlighted, it will figure out where to put it.

  • Home Share questions....

I've never used Home Share before & I'm trying to get all my stuff from my old laptop to my new laptop.
I turned homeshare on both of the laptops & I have a ton of purchased stuff that was obviously purchased before turning on home share. I know Apple says you can manually transfer purchases made before home share was turned on but it's not letting me do anything. I click on the purchase I want to move into share & it wont let me do it.
I want to transfer all my music & all the TV shows I have but I'm not really having any luck.
Is there something I need to do differently?
    Thanks.

I have the same problem.  My Mac Mini is being used as my server.  Oddly, my iPhone works as always but the iPad stopped working - i believe about a week or so ago when I updated the firmware on my Mac Mini.  There was another update available today, however, to no avail.
I had previously, conistently had a problem that required going to settings on both my iPad and my iPhone and turning off Home Sharing in Music then restartig Home Sharing.  This always resolved the problem of a small percentage of albums and artists showed up. This doesn't resolved the inability for the iPad to connect.  I turned off Home Sharing on the Mac Mini and turned it back on, rebooted the computer, loaded OS X 10.8.3.  Nothing works.  I just get an endless rotating circle - for hours.  So... it appears to be trying but can't load the database.  I think it is a software bug introduced on the second last update of OS X
Hopefully Apple will recognize the problem and come up with a fix.
I just updated the iPad to 6.1.3 and that didn't fix the problem.
I also updated my iPhone today and it still works and was working prior to the latest update to 6.1.3
I am using an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express as my wireless network.
Airport Utility shows all devices are connected and have Excellent connections.
The IP Address on each device shows up on Airport Utility.  Just as a check, i rebooted everything - Airport Express, Airport Extreme, iPad, Mac Mini.  Logged off of Home Sharing on all devices and logged back in.  Still nothing.
Bottom line - the problem seems to be tied to the Server's version of iTunes - can't say for sure, but everything else seems to be fine.

  • HT3819 home share setup question

i just enabled home share for the first time (on my new iMac) but received the message that 4 of 5 devices are allocated (i am guessing that the list may include old iPods?) where can i review / edit the list of devices that are candidates for home share?

    mewallen wrote:
thanks. that has allowed me to reduce the number to one. ideally, it would have been possible to see what devices had been authorized
Mot of the time it is the same computer which has been authorized mor ethan once.
This happens if you do not deauthorize it and you reinstallthe OS, change the hardware somehow (different HD or add more RAM).

  • ITunes 11 Stops Responding to Bonjour Discovery Multicast Broadcasts, Why?  This stops the the Apple TV 3 from being able to start a new stream from the home share and the iPad remote app can no longer see the home share too.

I'm having an issue where my Apple TV 3 and all our iPads periodically seem to loose connectivity to an iTunes home share on a Windows 7 PC.  Using a network protocol analyser on the PC I have identified that the point of failure corresponds to the ATV3 sending a bonjour discovery request and getting no reply from iTunes.  Why the ATV3 'forgets' where the home share is is possibly another issue but the root cause of the failure is that iTunes, or more specifically the mDNSResponder service, is not responding to the UDP multicast port 5353 broadcast discovery packet sent by the ATV3 or iPad.  The mDNSResponder service does start responding again after iTunes is restarted thus making the home share accessible once more, however, this frequent drop out is unacceptable and often happens after only a single TV show has been watched from the home share making the solution unworkable for a family, we simply cannot be restarting iTunes constantly it ruins the user experience completely!
The nature of this failure indicates that the ATV3, the iPads, the host PC and network are all working correctly and the point of failure here is the lack of response to the bonjour discovery protocol with the net result of either a spinning 'connecting to home share' message or the home share just disappearing from the computers section.
If there is a configuration fix for this please let me know as I haven't located a fix!  Otherwise this seems very much to be a code flaw in iTunes 11 or the mDNSResponder and I would appreciate some input from Apple!  Going on other questions in these forums it would seem the problem is not limited to Windows PCs but also Macs too.  NB: This is not a TCP issue, when the ATV3 or iPad knows the IP of the iTunes server all works flawlessly, it just periodically they seem to refresh the list of home shares and at this point they loose the information about the home share they have just been using because of the non-response to the UDP multicast discovery broadcast packet, that is arriving at the host PC and isn't being blocked by the firewall.
    Many Thanks!

In my case there was no import from a former mac.
My problem (at least mine) is that no app that offers media sharing works properly. Neither itunes home sharing nor AirVideo nor EyeTV sharing.
So I'm pretty sure that this is network issue.
Adding another user on my mac and sharing a new library works not also. But sharing from another laptop in my WiFi works. So this has to be a network issue on my mac, not only my user, but an issue of the whole system.
But I'm not willing to reinstall MacOS X for that if I don't have to.

  • Can I use home share across multiple accounts on the same computer?

we all use one computer and have one music library in a public folder. Can we use home share so that when one of us makes a purchase (and adds it to our library) others can easily see it and have the option to add it to their library too (without duplicating the file)?

Based on my HAZY memory of a previous question like this, what you would need to do is...
Log out of one Cloud account (MAY need to restart your computer, not sure of this... hazy memory) then log in to your OTHER Cloud account

  • How to do Home Share with 2 different Apple ID's? Spouse and I

How do I set up the Home Share when there are 2 different Apple ID's? Spouse and I. We each have accounts but are trying to share music. Is this possible? Can I reset my Apple ID and Password?

    Hello HopeFloat12,
Thanks for the question. Depending on the circumstances, and what you wish to achieve, there are a couple of options:
    A) Home Sharing
    B) Music Sharing
    C) iTunes Match (Subscription $24.99/yr)
The following article outlines the differences between Home Sharing and Music Sharing, I have also included a link to the marketing page for iTunes Match:

  • Will iTunes 10.6.1 on a 2005 iMac be able to home-share with iTunes 7 on a 2008 iMac and a new iPhone 5?

On the iPhone page I was told the iPhone 5 will work with iTunes 10.7, so maybe I shouldn't upgrade to iTunes 11 since a lot of people don't like it. Nobody here seems to know how to combine my two iTunes libraries on the same account but different-aged iMacs.
So the question is, if I upgrade my 2008 Intel iMac to Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion and iTunes 10.7, will it and my new iPhone 5 be able to access the 80GB library on the 10.6.1 version of iTunes on the older white 2005 iMac?
I appreciate any help anyone can give me.  I currently have home sharing via a WiFi network, to rephrase in case my previous unanswered questions haven't been clear, I'm wondering if I will be able to home-share between 10.6.1 and 10.7, and if an iPhone 5 would be able to access a home-shared library on the older 10.6.1 version?

Thanks for the link, Niel.  I'm kind of disappointed with Apple that they're making us buy an upgrade to her OS to get all of her Apple products to work together.  It seems weird that we could have any old Windows machine and this would work great, but the fact that she has a MacBook is screwing this up.

  • Home Share has stopped working in iTunes (10.5.2.11)

My iPod touch Remote no longer works to find the library on my Windows XP computer. It has worked for some long time here prior to this newest version of iTunes. (It doesn't work on my iPad either.)
If I turn off the Windows fire wall it works very well! So there must be some ports that need to be enabled. The question is what ports.

Home share uses the following: Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries --- this according to Apple. I had previously opened UDP port 5353 to solve another problem. Opening TCP 3689 solved the home sharing problem.

  • Moving files with home share?

    Sorry for the silly question.
I have never used the home share.
On my mac mini is a drobo with the main library on.
Back on my imac I have just imported a CD.
I can see the minis home share so select it and my music from the drobo appears, but I was under the impression I would be allowed to copy over the cd I imported on the iMac?
there does not appear to be a way to do that?
    Cheers

  • Simple Home Sharing Question

I'm sure this is a basic question but I can't seem to find the answer.  Please any help us MUCH appreciated!  Here's the deal... I'm a long time iTunes and iPhone user and have a large music & apps library.  My wife has her own computer and recently got an iPhone... so I set her up using my Apple ID so we could home share.  This worked okay but with the release of iOS5 and iCloud... I'm confused.
My question is... how does iCloud play into this now?  We now have multiple comptuers and iPhones using the same Apple ID... so how does Find My Friend & Find my iPhone work?  How does syncing with iCloud work?  Will it seperate our contacts?
Last question... how would YOU set this up?  I don't want my wife have to repurchase the same music and apps... but she has her own laptop and iPhone.
    Thank you!

I assume that if you are actually using the laptop to stream photos or music to the ATV, then it won't hibernate?
The details of that issue depends on whether or not you've got "wake on network access" enabled. Here's a cut and paste of the info from the relevant troubleshooting document:
    8. Cannot access my library when my computer is asleep
In order for Apple TV to access your library while the host computer is asleep, "Wake for network access" must be turned on.
Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and check (enable) the "Wake for network access" option.
In addition, the network that the host computer and the Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) is connected to must support Wake on Demand feature. This works by partnering with a service running on your AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule called Bonjour Sleep Proxy.

  • Second Apple TV won't Home Share

    Hi everyone.
    Here's my current setup:
    Windows 7 on PC.
First Apple TV 3rd gen connected to my main wireless router which is a D-Link DIR-825. No issues with connectivity and streaming. No issues with accessing / using home share functionality.
Second Apple TV 3rd gen connected to an Amped SR300 High-Power Wireless-300N Smart Repeater. No issues with connectivity and streaming. But I can't seem to get this second Apple TV to connect to my iTunes home share.
I've reset both the Amped repeater and the second Apple TV and still can't home share.
Any ideas or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
    Cheers!

My apologies, as I've provided the wrong info.
Both ATV3's are running on software version 5.1.
So this begs the question as to why one ATV3 is home sharing without issue and the other isn't?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Cheers!

  • What happened to home share apps?

What happened? I used to share my Grocery IQ with my DH's computer. Now when I open home share on DH's computer my music is still there but my apps are not. I'm not about to buy another app just for his iPhone when I have a good one for my iTouch. Can anybody help?

Actually, I did notice this and comment on it in another thread on this subject:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1731324&tstart=15.
Curiously, you never specifically mentioned this either. I also didn't "complain about those who ask questions" in either of my posts in this thread. In fact, I don't particularly care for these App Store changes either. I simple provided an explanation that was posted elsewhere. Apparently, the only explanation you're willing to accept is that Apple did it out of complete incompetence and/or greed.
If your definition of "Apple Worshiper" is someone who doesn't have a blatant personality disorder compelling him to flame and attack anyone who doesn't support cluelessly hostile attitudes, you are 100% correct. If you think I'm a mindless Apple drone, you're 100% wrong.
So, what did I "complain" about that might have set you off? Maybe it was that sarcastic quip about limiting forum membership to actual iPhone owners. Must've hit a raw nerve there...

  • Does logging out affect home share?

Just bought a mac mini to serve as a home share "server" for my AppleTVs and iTune content. While I'm waiting for it to arrive, I plan on creating a user account on the mini to publish the iTunes library.
My question is, do I need to keep that account logged in on the mini in order for the home share to be active or can I log out of the account, leave the machine running, and still have access to the share because the mini is acting more like a server hosting the content in "background mode?"
Second question -- if the account needs to remain active, does iTunes have to be open in the session? Not necessarily the primary application as far as desktop is concerned but just open?
    Thanks

the account needs to be logged in with itunes running in order for the home shared library to be accessable.

  • Itunes doesn't show Home Share words or list of other authorized computers

I have "turned on" Home Share. I have authorized a second computer. When logged in to the second computer, the Itunes screen does not show the option Home Share, or show the names of the authorized computers. So, no sharing of music is possible. What is the fix for this, please? The Help catalog does not answer the question.

I don't know if you've done this already, but you need to:
    Turn on "home sharing" turned on all of the relevant computers;
    Make sure the computers have to be on the same network;
You just turned on "Home Sharing", some people report that they had to quit iTunes and restart it before "Home Sharing" worked; and
If those previous steps failed to solve the problem, you might want to check the firewall settings on each of the computers to ensure that UDP Port 5353 (which allows the computers to see each other and appear in iTunes on the other computers) and TCP Port 3689 (which allows the actual "Home Sharing" features to work) are both enabled.
See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1601 for how to configure the default Windows firewall. If you're running a third party firewall (sometimes part of your antivirus software), the particulars of opening the appropriate ports on the firewall may differ.
If you think the problem may be a firewall issue and you're not 100% comfortable with how to "open ports", a quick test would be to temporarily disable the firewall on both machines, restart iTunes on both machines, and see if it works. This is just a test to see if the firewall is the problem, but you should promptly turn your firewall on again and if "Home Sharing" worked while the firewalls were turned off, you just need to proceed with the particulars of opening these two ports on both machines. I've also seen people open the port in their default Windows firewall, but neglect to realize that they might have two firewalls (e.g., neglect to check their antivirus software's firewall). Unfortunately, the particular instructions on how to open the firewall ports will vary from one firewall software package to another. But if you have problems, let us know what firewall software you're running and someone can probably help. (Or just check with your firewall vendor.)
    Hope this helps.
