Home Sharing & Airplay limitation ?

Hi,
Can someone let me know if this is limitation due to stronger copyright constraints on movies than on music :
I'm using home sharing between an iMac, 2 MacbookPros and an Apple TV 3rd generation.
I can perfectly airplay a movie from my iMac iTunes library to the Apple TV.
But when I try to airplay from my iMac a movie of a "Home Shared" library that I have access to (an iTunes library from one of my MacBook Pros), it's not possible as the Airplay icon is not shown anymore.
However, when I do the same for Music (airplay from my iMac a song of a "Home Shared" library that I have access to), I'm perfectly able to do it (the Airplay icon is still there).
So, bug or limitation imposed by Apple due to movie copyright constraints ?
Waiting for your precious input,
Regards,
DDA

  • Trouble with Home Sharing/Airplay from Mac

I am having an issue trying to access my computer through 2nd gen Apple TV. The software on the device is up to date. I am running OS X Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro with up to date iTunes. I am trying to watch a video in my iTunes library but it will not let me access my computer with home sharing. I have made sure that both devices have home sharing turned on and using the correct account. I am also unable to access my iTunes library with my iPad or iPhone. I have done this successfully in the past so I'm not sure what is causing this. Oh, it also wont let me airplay from iTunes on my Mac to the apple tv.
    Thanks,
    Matt

Same here. iPhone, Mac Mini and Apple TV3 are all up to date. Logged in and out on each device and home sharing and airplay still don't work at all. Nothing shows up in the remote app. They're all on the same network and have been. The only thing I can think of is the most recent ATV firmware update, but why would my phone be unable to see my computer??
    Any secret commands to try?

  • Home  sharing / airplay

    Hi there
I am having trouble setting up home sharing and then using Airplay on my IPAD (IOS 4.3.3). I have no trouble using airtunes from my MacBook. I have an apple ID which I have used to log this question. Note my ID for iTunes store is different.
When I go into itunes preferences on my MacBook and try and set up Home sharing I get an error message 5506. How do i find out what this is?
On the iPad when I go into settings>iPod and use the same apple ID everything seems OK but I do not get the Airtunes symbol when I load up the iPod applications.
I also have trouble with authorisations when I look to backup my apps from my iPad to my Macbook Pro.
Suspect all this is linked in some way.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    regards

    Me again !
I seemed to have fixed the iPad Airtunes issue. All is working now and the error 5506 no longer appears.
I will look into the authorisations issue again when I get chance and repost if still an issue.
    thanks

  • Internet Sharing & Home Sharing

I have a MacBook Pro sharing hotel Ethernet over wifi.  Meaning the machine is serving as a wifi router because the wifi here is completely choked by all the people using it....but Ethernet is blazing fast..so I'm making my own wifi.
One interesting thing, Apple provides Internet Sharing which is awesome.....but it's NOT serving DNS.  My iPhone, iPad, Apple TV all connect but can't see the internet without me specifying a DNS server on each client.  That really stinks, but isn't the reason for my post.
The post is mainly because iTunes Home Sharing (Airplay) doesn't work over Internet Sharing.  WHY?
If my MBPro and Apple TV are connected to hotel wifi airplay won't work, but if I connect an Ethernet cable from the MBPro to the AppleTV, BAM home sharing works.
So, in theory shouldn't Internet sharing with the firewall turned off work with AirPlay?  Why is it blocked?  How do I unblock it?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • Home Sharing and Airplay: fall 2011 major trouble in iTunes to APTV, IOS devices - detailed run-through.

Dear all, and dear Apple - as you know flagged trouble regarding Home Sharing to devices and to APTV has grown exponentially this fall and it is high time Apple calmly regained control over the situation. Get a grip, this is a fundamental "it just works" reputational issue.
Having read lots of community posts I am struck by how many crosschecks I have done and still cannot get Home Sharing to ´just work´ anymore.
    Symptoms of my troubles include:
    (1) In iTunes the Home Sharing house icon is nowhere to be found on the left hand side even though I have turned it on several times.
    (2) Airplay icon was visible in the lower right corner of iTunes for about two minutes last night but then vanishes.
    (3) My iPhone4S cannot find my shared library (under "More" or anywhere else).
    (4) And APTV will occationally load my Mac library to play a purchased tv episode but is highly unstable. 1 in 4 attempts succesful.
Ah, you say, "this all sounds like your home network is either faulty or the signal is not strong enough", or "you have not set up Home Sharing right".
    OK, let´s see...
The Airport Extreme station is right next to APTV, and is itself connected via ethernet to my router - and besindes my Mac can still find a strong signal via wifi. I access internet on my wifi-only iPad2 easily throughout the house, nice and strong signal. The APTV menu tells me the signal strength is excellent, and, most importantly - it worked a couple of weeks ago with no change in settings. I played my iTunes Library on my iPhone via Home Sharing, and I watched APTV TV episodes streamed from my Mac upstairs.
So far I have triple-checked the following settings:
Home Sharing on my Mac turned on under Advanced? yes. (House icon appears - until I press the "Done" button, then it vanishes).
Even though the House icon is nowhere to be found, is Home Sharing still "On" under iTunes Advanced setting? yes.
Under Preferences, Sharing, all ticks are carefully turned on? yes.
APTV Home Sharing: the same ID details, correctly entered?  yes. And for a little while, or on occation we have access to my library on APTV (but not the other mobile devices). Then it vanishes again (Computer menu on APTV telling me to turn on Home Sharing with ID etc.)
Mobile devices, under Settings/Music, are the Home Sharing details the same as those on your Mac/iTunes? yes.
All software on APTV, iTunes, OIS and Lion up to date? yes, as of 18/12 2011. For iTunes I have 10.5.2 (11)
I also reset Factory Settings on my APTV, which enabled us to watch a TV episode last night, but this morning it is gone again.
Within limits of how many devices I can share my library or iTunes with ? yes, 2 computers are authorised on my ID, and 3 devices are authorised on iCloud (iPad2, iPhone 4S and this Mac).
Have you tried the degrading, not-up-to-Apple-standard way of unplugging APTV/Airport Extreme/Mac power, and restarting your iPad/iPhone4S? Yes.
Does Airplay work from devices to e.g. APTV? yes it does.
Can I access the internet or rent a movie on APTV? yes.
Is this a strength issue with my Mac? Is my Mac fast/strong enough? Yes; it is a 3.06Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, running 8GB/1067 MHz/DDR3. 100GB of available harddrive space.
Dear community - what have I forgotten to do, please? Any ideas?
And Apple: please help your repeat customers with these issues - clearly there are some room for improvement here!?
Regards and best wishes for the Season.

I seem to have a similar problem.  I have a Macbook and a PC, both running the current version of iTunes.  On the APTV (also running the current software version), only my Macbook library shows up under "computers".  Home Sharing is turned on for both and my Macbook library shows up under "Shared" on the PC, but the PC iTunes library doesn't show up on the Macbook or the APTV.
My question then is: How is it that my Macbook iTunes library can show up on the PC and on the APTV, but the PC iTunes library doesn't show up on either?  If the PC can see the shared libraries, doesn't that mean it's on the same network?  Along those same lines, "Shared" libraries do NOT show up on the Macbook.  Again I ask, how is it that I can see the Macbook library on the PC, but the Macbook doesn't show any Shared libraries?
All of this worked just fine before the upgrade to iOS 5 by the way.  I had no issues seeing any library on any devices and the APTV found both computers.
Please help.  This is really annoying!

  • Apple TV (2nd and 3rd Generation) - Home Sharing Not Working but Airplay Does

    Hi everyone,
This has been a bit of a ongoing problem, so I'll provide a bit of background.
I am running a Mac Mini (Late 2012) Running Yosemite 10.10.1 as a media server running 10TB of Movies, TV Shows and Music off a NAS Drive. Running iTunes 12.0.1.26. Main hard drive is a 256GB SSD.
I also have 5 Apple TV's in the house, 2 are 3rd Generation (running iOS 7.0.2), 3 are 2nd Generation (running iOS 6.2.1).
The goal is to watch the TV Shows and Music through Home Sharing.
Home sharing works perfectly through the 3rd Generation Apple TV's, as does Airplay. I never have a problem with these. Mac Mini (or any other device for that manner) has no issues accessing the NAS.
The 2nd Generation Apple TV's are a continual source of frustration. They are connected to the network, can access the iTunes store, can accept Airplay signals from the Mac Mini, iPads, iPhones, etc. Can even detect the other (2nd and 3rd Gen Apple TV's). But frequently, when I try and connect to Home Sharing, I receive the error message "Cannot connect to Home Sharing", even though if I jump on the Mac Mini, I can airplay the content to that Apple TV just fine.
Is this just a 2nd Generation Apple TV Issue (to make us go an upgrade all our Apple TV's to 3rd Generation)?
I have completed the following troubleshooting steps, to no success.
    1) Reset the Apple TV's (Multiple Times)
    2) Sign out of Home Sharing\iCloud\iTunes Account, reset, and sign back in.
    3) Restore the Apple TV to the latest firmware and set up again.
    4) Test the device on Wireless and Wired Network.
    5) Reset all network infrastructure.
    6) Power Cycle the Apple TV's for 15 minutes.
    7) Reset iTunes.
    8) Sign out of Home Sharing\iCloud\iTunes Account in iTunes, Reset the Mac Mini, and Sign back in.
    9) Reinstall iTunes.
    10) Reset the Mac Mini and NAS.
    11) Reformat the Mac Mini and update to latest operating system (Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.1).
    12) Try home sharing from a Windows PC (Windows 8.1, x64).
Literally out of ideas. Am I chasing a Unicorn on this one? Would love some help.
    Thanks!

Good to know your Apple IDs are fine.
So I've been experimenting with de-authorizing and re-authorizing computers and devices and the symptoms you are experiencing are reminiscent of devices and computers unable to authenticate with Apple's servers.
What I would do is try de-authorizing and re-authorizing computers and devices to see if things return to normal. Start with the computers first. You can quickly de-authorize the computers by logging in to your iTunes Store account and using the 'Deauthorize All' button. After clicking the button wait a few minutes for it to propagate. You will know that the computers have been de-authorize when the Account Information page says "0 computers are authorized to play content purchased with this Apple ID." Other devices like Apple TV and iPads and such do not count on that list.
Once de-authorized, re-authorize them from the 'Store' menu in the iTunes app. You will know all three computers have been re-authorized when the Account Information page says "3 computers are authorized to play content purchased with this Apple ID." Now try and play your content with Apple TV. If it still doesn't work turn Home Sharing off on the Apple TV and then re-enable it using your Apple ID.
Hopefully this brings back your Home Sharing functionality.

  • Can I watch a rented movie from Itunes (iMac) on my Apple TV 3 without airplay and home sharing?

I recently download a rented movie from itunes store in my iMac. My question is, if I can watch my rented movie in my apple tv without Airplay or Home sharing? The reason is because I don't want to turn on my iMac every time that I want to watch a movie.
    Thanks!

If you rented the movie from Apple TV, then you can't watch it on the iPad.  The screenshot below is from Here

  • AirPlay and Home Sharing are no longer working.

Recently, Airplay and Home Sharing stopped working completely from my iMac. There just seems to be a miscommunication- AirPlay is showing up, my Apple TV and Airport Extreme are selectable, but then they wont connect. I've been trying to fiddle around with netword settings to try to fix it but no luck. Still works from my iPhone just fine.
Maybe someone who's Airplay and Home Sharing are working could tell me what their Advanced Network Settings look like?
    Thank you for any help!

Yes I did all the easy stuff first. I even re-installed Mavericks incase a special file was missing. I've totally reset my AirPort Express several times. It's what's transmitting my WiFi and it's super close to my iMac.
It's deffinitely a problem with my iMac seeing as it's not working with both my AirPort Express and Apple TV, also can't access Shared movies on my iPad via Home Sharing so yeah... definitely my iMac. All those other things communicate to eachother just fine.

  • HT204291 My apple tv is not airplaying to any of my devices - the airplay icon is completely gone!  I've reset apple tv, checked home sharing is on, checked my wifi connection is active but still no luck? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated:)

    - the airplay icon is completely gone!  I've reset apple tv, checked home sharing is on, checked my wifi connection is active, no firewalls, but still no luck? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated:)

What IOS and OS are you using Elissa.  I think from your post it used to work but has dropped off, is that correct or has it never worked?  If it did wotk has anything changed?  Check your wifi use with sopmething like istumbler to see if it is being used by neighbours etc?

  • Home sharing won't play but airplay will.

    Setup:
PC (Win 7) running Itunes 11.0.1.12 over WiFi N (2.4ghz)
3rd Gen Apple TV Ethernet connected directly to router.
I've got the ATV to see my home sharing just fine.  When I go to play a movie/tv show it sticks on the loading screen for over 5 minutes with no change.  At which point I go to the TV show I want to watch on my iTunes library, play it on the computer, and switch it over to AirPlay to the ATV and it loads and plays instantly without an issue.
What am I missing that I cannot get it to play through the ATV without using the AirPlay feature?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply vazandrew,
I've heard people say that Apple employees rarely answer questions here, but I'd have to think they at least peruse these forums, no?
Anyway, I can play to AirPort/stereo now from computer to computer, but not via a (4.1) iPodTouch. I'm considering upgrading the Touch to get AirPlay, but I don't do OS upgrades unless they're absolutely necessary and I'm quite confident it's not going to screw things up in some unforeseen way (yes, I've been burned over the decades, sadly). Unfortunately, I need to run my Touch JB'n to use some custom software, so that makes every OS upgrade on that device a very thoughtful decision. I hope it's not a problem to mention that here, but it's a fact of life when you need to use Terminal/network tools.
Thanks again for your reply, and if there's any other helpful thoughts you have, please let me know.

  • Home Sharing Limitations

Are there any plans on lifting the 5 device limitation for Home Sharing?  Even by means of a licence purchase?
Seeing as Apple products "Just Work" - I have come to a cross roads with running iTunes Home Sharing.
Everyone has their own music/video/apps library on the Mac Pro, and I have another shared Library with other music (the albums you may not want with you all the time etc.), some movies and TV shows - most purchased through iTunes.
4 people in the house (2 adults, 2 kids) - 3 iPads, 2 iPhones, 2 iPod Touches and an AppleTV (possibly 3 Apple TV's in the future) - this 5 device limit is causing me to look for other solutions like TVersity, which may not work as well, but do not impose as many limitations.
Even a 5 concurrent user limit would be better.

According to the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions I read the limitations are based on what is termed 'Associated Devices.' The limits are based on 10 Associated Devices, provided no more than 5 are iTunes-authorized computers. Also, Apple TV is not considered an 'Associated Device.'
By my count you have a total of 8 or 9 Associated Devices:
1 Mac Pro and possible another computer
    3 iPads
    2 iPhones
    2 iPod Touchs
1 Apple TV (does not count against your limit.)
Regardless the limitations are believed to be based on licencing restrictions imposed my the media companies. It's possible that if it were up to Apple there would be more liberal restrictions.

  • Airplay/home sharing question

Is it possible to bounce movies contained in my desktop itunes library back and forth from ipad and apple tv?
Say, for instance, I'm on the couch watching a movie and would like to start dinner in the kitchen. Can i take the movie with me on the ipad, picking up on the ipad where i left off from the apple tv? And then pass it back to the apple tv when I'm done cooking to continue watching on the couch again?
I tried doing this the hard way. I would stop the movie on apple tv, browse the shared library from ipad and find the movie and it would start just fine from where i stopped it. But strangely, I'd stop the movie from the ipad, browse apple tv for it and start it again only to find that it's not picking up where i left off from the ipad. It picks up where i stopped the apple tv to begin with, so i need to fast forward through the part that i just watched on the ipad in the other room to get to where i left off on the ipad.
Certainly there must be a better way to just pass the feed from itunes back and forth between multiple devices.
    Thanks,
    Jeremy

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    - When I play music in ITunes on my computer, I want the same thing to play on the Apple TV.
You already seem to know how to do this.
    - When I play my itunes music on the Apple TV (via Home Sharing or AirPlay), I want the same thing to play in iTunes on my computer.
    This isn't possible.
    - I want the pause/play/next track buttons to work on the Apple TV.
    Works fine for me.
But if I select a new track on the Apple TV, it goes out-of-sync: the old track continues playing on the computer, and the new one plays on the Apple TV
That's because you can't use your Apple TV to control your computer.
