Home sharing always fails

home sharing always fails

well...the PPPoE connection doesn't affect the file and printer sharing between the networked devices. PPPoE is an authentication method to get an internet connection from the ISP.
In case of file and printer sharing , you need to the devices are able to ping each other. If not able to ping then the firewall on the computers should be disabled. After the firewall is disabled check whether the devices / computers can ping each other ..

my home sharing continually fails between mac and apple tv 2, even during watching a movie.  I go to the mac to re-turn on home sharing but it is still on.  Any tips?  I also have to turn off and back on at the mac every time i switch on my apple tv.

Sharing Stopped working again over night.
I went to Apple Support Artical TS2972
As soon as I did this Home Sharing started working
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972
    Firewall Section
    5. Check Firewall Settings
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries.
In addition, Apple TV and Mac computers will use port 123 to set the time automatically. Incorrect date and time on either the computer or Apple TV can cause errors for Home Sharing and connections in general.
If you are unsure whether your router has a firewall or the required ports open, test additional devices or another network to help isolate the issue. If the devices tested work on another home network, it is your router or network configuration.
For Mac OS X, you don't have to edit the port addresses, but make sure the firewall in Apple () menu > System Preferences > Security > Firewall are not set to:
    Block all incoming connections
    Allow only essential services
If you use another security/firewall software on your computer or router, follow this article or contact the manufacturer or check the documentation on how to open TCP ports 123 and 3689 as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353.
It made sense to me, but its still puzzling me after restarting a router would (in my first attempt) resolve the issue for a day.  This this time I applied the port forwarding TCP and UDP ports and saved the settings in the DLink DIR-655 and both my iPad2 and iPhone 3GS were now again finding the share. My ATV2 is also now accepting the Share.
Tommorrow will be the true test.

  • When importing files from desktop to laptop using home sharing, files fail to copy "An unexpected error occured (-50)"

So I'm trying to copy my library from my desktop computer to my laptop. I'm using the import feature when browsing the other library through Home Sharing. Some files wil copy, anywhere from 6-150 songs then it will fail. I have 6000 songs to copy, so I really don't want to babysit my way through this. I'm having to use my wireless network (no external drive available), but it is pretty sturdy. It hasn't been giving me any grief to stream the music, just to copy Is there any fix for this?

The following comes from the LaCie web site but is applicable to any other external drives whether home brew or commercial.
Getting error -50 when copying data in OS X.
Some drives ship out formatted FAT32 so they will be ready to use on either a Mac or a PC. If you are getting error -50 when copying to a drive formatted for PC, it is because of the following:
Certain characters that can be used in a Mac OS X filename are not allowed in MS-DOS filenames. This can prevent the file from being copied, and can occur when a filename contains non-printing ASCII characters, or any of these characters: ? / \ < > " | > *.
Either copy the data off of the drive and use Apple's Disk Utility to erase the drive in Mac OS Extended format, or change the filenames of the documents that cannot be copied.

  • Home Sharing / Authorization Failing

I have three apple TVs.   A Mac Mini as a Media server. Allwith the latest software.  I typically have no issues, however recently Ihad to de-authorize all my machines for the iTunes account and then re-addedthe active machines (including the Mac Mini server).  Even though the MacMini is authorized, the my Apple TVs say that I need to authorize it.  Itried my laptop and the same issue.  Keep in mind the Apple TV is workingotherwise and able to stream music from the Mac Mini but I am unable to playvideo content (with Apple's DRM).
    Anyideas?

    Hi megsix,
Here is an article that will help you troubleshoot this issue with Home Sharing:

  • The home sharing always turn off when i try to see movie on my apple tv

Home sharing turns off when i try to watch movies on my apple tv

If your Apple TV is connected to your network via wi-fi, it could boil down to a range / signal quality issue.  Are you able to stream any other services to the Apple TV without issues?  If possible, connect the Apple TV with ethernet cable and see if that resolves your issue.

  • Home sharing with iTunes 10.7, iOS 6 and A-tv 5.1.1 fixed

I have finally resolved all the issues I was having with home sharing after installing iTunes 10.7, iOS 6, and Apple TV 5.1.1.  Everything with home sharing was failing; movies would never load, music would start plaing but then start buffering.  None of my Apple devices were working. I have been trying to resolve this for weeks now.  My solution was the 5 GHz WiFi on a Linksys E3200.  I disabled the the 5 GHz and everything started working.  I the went through every wireless setting but nothing worked with the 5 GHz turned on.
    I hope this helps,
    Laz

I just don't understand why it's so hard for all of us to acknowledge the simple fact that Home Share (and Match) simply don't work. They don't, that's all. Apple is great for hardware, but lousy on software (see also me.com, Final Cut, etc.)
Why in the world should I spend my time trying to fix something that someone else has made, without gettin paid, when the same team who created it isn't able to fix it? I just don't understand.
Every few days somebody comes up with a fix for Home Share, only to repost a few days later with a "wrong, it stopped working again".
I really don't mean to be offensive, and I really appreciate other fellow's hints and helps in this forum,I try to give my help as well when I know of a solution, but when it doesn't work we should just drop it. iTunes is a lost case, sadly.

  • Home Sharing setup for 2 pc, 2 iPhone & an iPad

    Hello everyone!
I am really hoping someone can help me. My mom and I just got iPhone 5s and I would like to be able to share my iTunes music with her, but I am not sure how to set this up. I have reviewed many posts here, but they are all different depending on the devices and what each person would like to do. So I am adding my questions to the mix so that maybe someone has a similiar setup and can offer step-by-step instructions to make it work. We have 2 pcs on Windows XP, 2 iPhone 5s and I have an iPad. Does iTunes Home Sharing work on XP without using iCloud? Can sharing my iTunes music happen without sharing our contacts, calendar and email? Please let me know if this is not possible and I am wasting my time. This message is my last attempt to make this work. I have spent much time trying to make this work.
Thank you for your time and energy!

Okay, so here's what I've found so far:
So I've done a number of tests on both my Apple TV's - the bedroom unit worked fine - it wirelessly connected to a cheap wifi-N AP (netgear $20 refurb from Microcenter) and it was upgraded by plugging directly into my Mac using a USB cable.
My living room unit, experiencing this issue, was plugged into an ethernet port and was upgraded through the IOS update feature.  Any movie played through Home Sharing would fail after 2-3 minutes.  In some cases, like with ******* 3D, I couldn't even finish watching the titles of the film before losing the connection.
This was happening on all my Home Sharing setups - both on the PC and the Mac that have libraries their share - both before and after upgrading to the latest iTunes on both.
I tried resetting the living room unit by plugging it into the iTunes and doing a factory restore.  Once it was done, I put it back online - and connected it to the same WiFi as the bedroom unit.  All tests passed.  Was easily able to play things that couldn't stream before the latest update.
Once I plugged in the ethernet cable, it shut down the WiFi link and then started exhibiting the connection drop once again.
I then unplugged ethernet, re-connected to that AP and have been working since.  Nothing in the packet capture I have shows what happens to the connection - I see lots of DAAP protocol going back and forth - then out of nowhere, the Apple TV starts pouring out a pile of RST packets and that's when the connection drops.  In order to look at this more closely, I'd have to put a sniffer on the LAN and run this through a network switch that has packet capture abilities - not something I possess at the moment.
For now I'd advise that folks run wireless or wireless through a third gateway if you can.
    Cheers!

  • TS2972 Since upgrading Apple TV to 5.1, home sharing works for 2 minutes

My setup has been working for ages, but ever since I upgraded my living room Apple TV to 5.1, it looses it's connection to home sharing after 2 minutes.
    Running OS-X 10.7.3 with iTunes 10.6.  Netgear N600 (WNDR7300 v2) router on Comcast.
This is happening with newly ripped as well as older ripped movies that I've purchased and converted using local tools, all stored locally on my Mac.
I first started experiencing this with my setup today, where I'd play a movie and then 2 minutes later, it would quit and my computer would no longer appear in the Apple TV computers list.  I then go to my Mac, turn off Home Sharing, then turn it back on - and viola, it's back again - for two more minutes.
I had updated my Netgear from 10.0.0.8 to 10.0.0.12 recently, but have since reversed that upgrade - the issue remains.
I've tested this also by using my remote app from my iphone, and again, the connection appears okay until I start using it - then after 2 minutes of playback, it loses its connection.  Is iCloud cutting off my iTunes on purpose? is Comcast? I have no idea what's going on to cause this.

  • ATV3 Home Sharing Randomly Dropping

I've had an Apple TV 3 for about a week now. I really like it but...two days ago, it began randomly dropping home sharing with my MacBook Pro at random times. I've been on calls with phone support twice to correct the problem (with two different solutions). And then this morning, it decided, while I was watching something, that I didn't have Home Sharing on.
I really don't understand what is going on. I'm almost religious about keeping my software up to date, so I'm running the most recent versions of iTunes, OSX Lion, and the Apple TV software.
Any suggestions for a lasting fix? Because I really don't have the time or patience to keep running around resting the router, MacBook, and the ATV (Including reinputting all of passwords for the wifi network, iTunes, etc.)
(Oh, and as I was typing this, it randomly dropped while I was watching something I had running on the ATV coming from my iPhone 4)

Well add me to the list of frustrated ATV3 owners. I have 10 ATV3s on a large local network all hard wired and connects to server to share Movies and Music. The ATV will lose connection with server often and iTunes reset will fix it most of the time, but have a couple ATVS that just can't connect to server.  Internet access works perfect on all units it's the Home Sharing that fails. Completely unreliable.  Called Apple support and they said that they are aware of the problem and are not sure why it started having troubles. Older iTunes worked fine until a recent update. The Apple name is getting a bad rap now, and as an AV installer, I can't recommend products that fail to work. Pretty simple, Apple needs to step up and spend the cash on fixing this problem. Not sure why we all have to resort to a discussion forum.

  • I SET UP THE HOME SHARING ON MY COMPUTER, AND i CAN STREAM MY PHOTOS AND SEE ALL THE VIDEOS AND LISTEN SONGS IN MY ITUNES, BUT CAN NOT DO HOME SHARING, ON THE TV, ALWAYS SHOWS "TURN ON HOME SHARING ON YOUR OMPUTER WITH YOUR ID WHICH I DID BUT NOTHING HELP

I just bought my apple tv yesterday and SET UP THE HOME SHARING ON MY COMPUTER, I CAN STREAM MY PHOTOS AND SEE ALL THE VIDEOS AND LISTEN SONGS IN MY ITUNES, BUT CAN NOT DO HOME SHARING, ON THE TV, ALWAYS SHOWS "TURN ON HOME SHARING ON YOUR OMPUTER WITH YOUR ID WHICH I DID BUT NOTHING HAPPEN. WHAT'S WRONG? WHAT SHALL I DO NOW?

I have found with AppleTV that it is the IPV6 on the computer you want to access is the problem.  The issue is that Homegroup on Win 7 or Win 8 requires IPV6 to work, but AppleTV won't work with IPV6.  (So maybe double check you have IPV6 turned off)
So you have to make a choice - Homegroup or AppleTV.... but you can't have both, until Apple brings ATV up to date. (crazy that it does not recognise IPV6 - c'mon Apple!)
You can set up sharing individually in Win 7 or 8 and have the ATV access files that way.
Having said that, there is always the exception.. I have an old HP home server running Win8 and it services ATV - but is part of the Homegroup... have no idea why it works on both, but no other machine on the home network will talk to both ATV and Homegroup at the same time!

I rented a movie. I want to see it using different user on same mac for security reason. How can I do this? Home Sharing fails to do this, so far.

Copy the movie from the current library to the correct library.
iDevices can only sync to one library at a time.

  • HT3819 How can I disconnect a failed (no longer accessible) computer or iPod from home sharing?

I have two computers authorized to my home sharing set up, but their hard drives have failed.  I can't access them to due authorize them from home sharing.  How can I get around that hurdle?

    Hello harp_n_run,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with Home Sharing.
If you do not have access to the authorized computer, you can deauthorize all computers in your iTunes Store account settings.  You can then go back and authorize the computers you have access to.
You can follow these steps to deauthorize all your computers:
To deauthorize all computers associated with your Apple ID
If you need to authorize your new computer and are unable due to already having five authorized computers, you can deauthorize all computers by doing the following:
Click iTunes Store on the left side of iTunes.
If you're not signed in to the store, click the Account button, then enter your account name and password.
Click the Account button again (your Apple ID appears on the button), enter your password, and then click View Account.
In the Account Information window, click Deauthorize All.
Note: You may only use this feature once per year. The Deauthorize All button will not appear if you have fewer than two authorized computers. If you need assistance on using this feature, please contact iTunes Store support via email (http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/).
After deauthorizing all your computers, you can follow these steps to authorize the computers you do have access to:
To authorize a computer using your Apple ID
    Open iTunes
From the Store menu, choose Authorize This Computer. (In earlier versions of iTunes, access this option from the Advanced menu).
When prompted, enter your Apple ID and password, then click Authorize.

  • Home sharing fail

I have activated home sharing on two computers and yet the "shared" list and computers are not showing up.  Please help!

+I have waded thru many help topics like this, all with suggestions that do not work, all from people other than Apple techs+
This is a user-to-user forum. Hence, no replies from apple techs.
+which worked a while ago before some updates, now no longer works. If it it turned on, as soon as "Done" is clicked, the little house on the sidebar vanishes, never to be seen again.+
The disappearing after clicking DONE has almost always turned out ot be a firewall blcoking the updated version of itunes.
