  • Home Sharing with Apple TV2 Broken After 4.2 Update

It looks like I have some company with at least similar issues. This is very frustrating and support was no help.
ATV 2 worked just great with Windows 7 64-bit and iTunes library until the 4.2 update was loaded. Now ATV 2 keeps telling me to turn on home sharing on a computer but it's already on and iTunes is running, I'm using iTunes 10.2.1.1 and Apple TV2 with latest update 4.2 (2060) and connection over WIFI. Home Sharing is enabled on my computer and ATV2 using the same Apple ID and password. I can get to YouTube and the iTunes store from my ATV 2 without issue.
I've attempted many solutions from what I could find online but no luck:
    1. Turned off/on home sharing on both the Apple TV 2 and in iTunes (multiple times)
    2. Re-entered my Apple ID and password on both ATV 2 / iTunes
    3. Restarted iTunes and ATV 2
    4. Restarted the DSL modem/router (ZyXEL PK5000z)
    5. Turned the firewall completely off (Norton Internet Security - firewall is off in router)
    6. Restored ATV 2 over WIFI
    7. Reinstalled iTunes
    8. Changed my Apple ID and password then reset in iTunes and ATV 2
    9. Renamed my itunes library
    10. Disabled QoS upstream/downstream protocol in my DSL modem/router
    11. Restored ATV 2 through USB connection in iTunes. This worked for a few minutes but after I turned off ATV 2 and later tried again it was back to it not working...
    Any other ideas?

Well, I tried a few other things and one worked but again just the first time I tried connecting to the desktop PC with iTunes. I flashed my router with the latest update and the ATV2 could see the iTunes library and I was able to play media. Later in the day I was going to show off to my daughter that I had fixed it and, to my dismay, no go. I tried opening the suggested ports but no luck.
I then tried loading iTunes on a Win7 laptop and it works perfectly with the ATV2. Both the laptop and the ATV2 are connected to the router wirelessly while the Desktop is connected to the router by Ethernet. Not sure if this is part of the issue as it sounds like this didn't work for others. The only other difference between the laptop and desktop is that the desktop has Win7 SP1 loaded while the laptop does not; now I'm scarred to load it though I don't think that's the issue. All in all, a very vexing situation. Hopefully Apple comes up with a solution soon.

  • Performance issues home sharing with Apple TV2 from Mountain Lion Server

I have a Mac Mini which I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion Server from Snow Leopard Server.
I have noticed that the performance of Streaming a film using Home Sharing to an Apple TV2 has degraded compared to the Snow Leopard setup. In fact the film halts a number of times during play back which is not ideal.
I have tested the network between the 2 devices and cannot find a fault.
Has anyone come across this problem before.
Are there any diagnostic tools I can use to measure the home sharing streaming service to the AppleTV2 device.
    Any help much appreciated

  • Home Sharing and Apple IDs

I apologize in advance if this doesn't make sense or has been answered elsewhere - it is nearly 1am and I am so done with research.  I'd have given up by now except that this is important to deal with before I dig myself into an even bigger hole.
My daughter got an iPad mini.  She didn’t have her own Apple ID (since she is only 7), so I synced it up with her older brother’s iTunes library/Apple ID on our PC.  She had been playing games on his iPod and downloaded some of her own favorites using his account.  Now she's gotten progress built up on her iPad and even had big brother buy her some games under his Apple ID just for her use.
I have an Apple ID and iTunes library but only download music (no apps) since I don’t have any Apple devices.
Now, I recently got her her own Apple ID so she can use iMessage.  She has been getting iTunes gift cards for her birthday, so I was planning on letting her use her own account for downloads too.  This way the accounting between the 2 kids will make sense (they can’t use up each other’s gift card balances and I don't have to keep track of it).  Since there is a 13-year age limit I suppose the question is moot – I shouldn’t even be trying to do this.  But the question will come up in 6 years anyway … or sooner if I come to the dark side and give up my Blackberry
I would like to share the music and apps that we have purchased instead of having to spend money again to put them on both of their devices.  She is also worried that she will lose progress in the games she plays that she got from her brother.
Q1: If I re-purchase the games under her account and then sync with her library (iTunes tells me it will wipe her iPad before syncing to this new library), will she lose progress even though the game will be removed and re-installed right away?  I suppose I could ensure I have a good backup of her iPad using his iTunes library and then try to sync it up with her library.  If it loses her progress, I could just restore using his library and try something different.
Q2: Would home sharing help? I read about it and am still confused. Is it just so I can use multiple machines to host my library (all with same Apple ID) or can I use it to share content with my family members’ libraries (even though we have different Apple IDs)?
This is so frustrating. I am a technically literate person (I work in IT), but don’t have unlimited free time to spend becoming an expert in all things Apple just so I can get these devices working the way I expect they should.  It shouldn’t be this difficult or time consuming.  I’ve wasted hours I don't have reading articles, going into the Apple store (which is not convenient), and still feel unable to make a decision because the wrong one could get me into an even more confusing/costly situation.  Sorry I am whining.  I'm so tired

    Hi JustTired,
OK, so to answer your first question - if your daughter's iPod is sync'd with a new iTunes library, then even if you do purchase games to reside in that library, the games she was playing that were purchased under a separate Apple ID will not "transfer" her progress. Essentially, you are loading a brand new game on her device.
For your second question - to the best of my knowledge, Home Sharing will not help you to share multiple iTunes libraries that live on the same physical computer under separate Apple IDs:
Home Sharing requires a computer using the latest version of iTunes,* and one or more of the following devices on the same home network:
Another computer using the latest version of iTunes.* You can use Home Sharing with up to five computers.
An iOS device with iOS 4.3 or later
Apple TV (2nd generation) with Apple TV software version 4.2.1 or later
    Apple TV (3rd generation)
*Additionally, you should install any available updates for your version of Windows or Mac OS X.
Home Sharing requires all computers, iOS devices, and Apple TVs (2nd generation and 3rd generation) to use the same Apple ID.
Home Sharing is designed to share iTunes libraries on multiple computers (and devices), not mulitple libraries on the same computer.
You can, however, share your iTunes library with your daughter. To do this, you would sign on her Apple ID to "your" iTunes and Authorize the computer for her ID. Then you would sync her device as new with your iTunes library. This would require you to be logged on to the computer, but it would be her device (and Apple ID) that were syncing with the library. Based on how you then set up her device profile, she can sync anything in the library to her device.
The only thing you would need to keep in mind is that anything purchased in iTunes under your ID would be linked to your ID. That means that your daughter would not be able to re-download, say an App that accidently got deleted, wirelessly. She could re-sync it using a USB cable, but would not have access to your iTunes purchase history to be able to actually re-download it. Also, future app updates would require that she know your Apple ID password.
Now, if when setting up her Apple ID, you are also going to set it up with a Credit or Gift card so her purchases can be done with her ID, then that last caveat would not apply. In that scenaio, she would sign into "your" iTunes library (you logged onto the computer), and then do her purchases through the iTunes store. Your purchases and her purchases would live in the same library, and you would control what gets sync'd where via the individual device profiles.
Hope this helps and provides a viable answer for what you are wanting to do.
    Cheers,

  • Home sharing and Apple TV?

Apple TV 3 and iMac.  All latest updates includign iTunes  11.0.1
When setting up home share in iMac i get "Shared" on left side bar  but as soon as i hit done it vanishes and does not reappear.  Also doesn't appear on TV.
This is such a simple process i cannot see what i may be doing wrong.  Simple wifi network - everything else works.  and yes AI am using apple id and password correctly.
    Any suggestions?
    update:
I got it to work.   The only i did that ws different was to de-authorise and the re-authorise the computer using itunes\control.
This SW needs more disgnostic information if that was all there was to it.

    Latest iTune on windows laptop
    Apple TV ver 3
Connected on same LAN & using the same apple TV
Computer is not visible in apple TV. Many hit & trial, home sharing off & on ... And suddenly it appears. Tries apple tv reset as well but no set pattern to resolve the issues.
No reason. Facing issue from last 5 months. Finally writing to find the resolution.
    It works intermittantly.

  • ITunes Home Sharing with Apple TV2, works with one Win 7 PC but not with the other

Hopefully someone out there can help with this, I have gone through all of the troubleshooting procedures that Apple provides, and have spoke to thier 'fast track' technical services department and we cannot resolve this.
My probelm is that Apple TV does not recognize my Win7 PC that has itunes running in Home Sharing mode.  In order to test my router, network configurationand the Apple TV, I put iTunes on a laptop on my network running Win7 as well, and the Apple TV had no problems sharing with that computer.  I have opened all of the ports in my firewall that Apple recommended, and tried to make it work both with and without my anti-virus software, but still no sharing of iTunes with this computer.  We are working with the latest version of iTunes and Apple TV, both updated today.
Has anyone run into this problem?
    Thanks
    S McD

Yep - have had the same problem, especially since IOS5 came about and no solution has worked.  I've fought this one for a while, I come back to it every once in a while when I see something that might be a new tack but no joy.  I've also tried all that stuff, but none of them fix it.
I can tell you a couple of things I have found out along the way:
First off, there is some kind of issue with the Apple Mobile Service that causes it to not stay working.  If you stop the service and start it you may be able to make the sharing show up for a bit, but it will eventually disappear.
Secondly, there may be a network routing factor to this too.  Apple doesn't like to use the same kind of protocols as many sharing schemes do, instead preferring something known as "Bonjour".  Bonjour uses multicast routing, and appears to either be programmed badly or in a non-standard way - or maybe there just is no standard.  In any case what you find is that it just doesn't work, and there is no current fix.
Keep trying though, maybe you can figure it out.  If you do, please come back and post what you did, I'd be very interested.  Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but I can at least tell you that you're not crazy, there are others out there having the same problem with the same bleak outlook.  By the way, mine used to work until iOS5.

  • HT4352 problem sharing iTunes with new Apple TV.(model MD199LL/A. I have iTunes and Apple TV set up with same address and passwords, enabled iTunes and Apple TV for home sharing and still nothing? I have latest iTunes and Apple TV update. Any other sugges

Have a problem with Home Sharing with Apple TV and iTunes. Have latest iTunes and Apple TV downloads. Have both items set up for home sharing with same address and passwords. AppleTV running fine for everything else. FYI, my library is about 60gigs. AppleTV model is MD199LL/A if that matters. Really want to hear my entire music library and not just Purchased items. Thanks for any help!!!

I have an older PC with Windows XP Professional on it. I updated to the latest iTunes and I am able to access the photos, etc. on it. However, my Windows 7 PC still does work (since last Apple TV update). Apple TV does not recognize that Home Sharing is turned here. The latter PC has all my current photos on it which I would like share with others on my Apple TV. A fix would be appreciated.

  • I have an Apple TV and I can only see Home Sharing and Settings, NO YouTube

I ran an update on my Apple TV last month, when it restarted I could not see anything apart from Home Sharing and Settings. I can see the option of YouTube and have racked my brain but can’t get to YouTube from my Apple TV.
If I search for a video on my iPhone then I can play it Via the Apple TV but I can’t directly access YouTube. Please help me out if anyone has any clue how to fix this.

    Did it - didn't work.
I can access the internet from every other apple device that is connecting to the same router as the Apple TV.
Please don't tell me it's a "network" issue. The AppleTV is the only one that can't seem to "see" the internet.

  • My Apple tv is stuck on the home sharing and settings screen

For some reason my apple tv is stuck on the home sharing and settings screen. Ive already unplugged it and let it reset but its not even giving me the option to go to the home scene..HELP!!?

That is the main menu, however you are not properly connected to the network so that is why the other apps are not appearing.
Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)
Check that location is set correctly via settings
    If on wifi try ethernet
Make sure router is up to date and has port 123 open (refer to manual if unsure)

    Morning JJFH,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If after setting up Home Sharing, you cannot access your shared iTunes library over your home network from your Apple TV, take a look at this article:

  • I just hooked up my apple tv and have done the home sharing  and I started watching a movie and it keeps pausing to load. Why is that?

Why does the movies pause when watching on apple tv from home sharing and it said it would be two hour before i can watch one from the cloud

Where are you trying to access them on Apple TV?
If under the Movies icon, that will be accessing the cloud. Load times are dependent on your Internet connection.
You need to be under the Computers icon to use home sharing. If it is having trouble loading here then it would be a local network issue.
