Home sharing broken with 12.0.1.26 update

Today I updated both my computers to the latest version of iTunes, 12.0.1.26. Previously, Home Sharing was working properly, but with this update they are unable to connect to each other
With iTunes open on both computers, I can see the remote computer name within iTunes, but when I try to open it I get the message "Loading <computer>" and then nothing happens. The loading just keeps going and it never actually connects to the remote computer.
Both computers are signed in to the same Apple ID and have Home Sharing enabled, and as I said everything worked perfectly before this update. I ran the diagnostics on both computers and everything is good there. Here's the output from the diagnostic tests in case it comes in handy
Desktop Computer Diagnostic (Server)
Laptop Computer Diagnostic (Client)
The only thing I could think of would be if the update changed the ports that home sharing uses, but I have no idea for sure. Has anyone else experienced this issue and/or have a solution for it?

Hi Sterling, thank you for your reply
I've went ahead and have gone through those troubleshooting steps, however the problem still persists.
I thought the firewall would most likely be the problem, so I opened the incoming ports on both computers, however that didn't change anything.
Next thing I tried was configuring Connection Security Rules on both computers, allowing my entire LAN (192.168.1.0/24) as accepted endpoints, this also failed.
Finally I tried disabling the whole firewall temporarily on both computers, and when this didn't fix the issue I ruled out the possibility of it being a firewall issue
However, I have noticed that creating a Home Sharing connection from my desktop (server) to my laptop (client) actually does work, and I can see a playlist I created. So that's some progress. However, connecting from the laptop to the desktop (which has all my music) still doesn't work.
After this I went ahead and decided to use Wireshark to capture the packet stream of both the successful and failed connections. What I've noticed is that iTunes home sharing uses a series of HTTP GET requests to establish the connection to the remote computer. Connecting from my desktop to my laptop I see that 23 total GET requests are sent and are all ACK'd. However, connecting from my laptop to my desktop, only one GET request is sent, and it is also ACK'd. Here are two screenshots of the TCP streams. The first is the successful connection and the second is the failed. You can see in the first screenshot's HTTP header, I've highlighted that 23 requests are being sent. In the second screenshots HTTP header, only 1 request is being sent.
With this is mind, I believe I can rule out any network issues on my end, since iTunes is actually only sending one GET request from my laptop and it is successfully delivered, however it hangs there and doesn't continue. I believe this to be an issue with the iTunes software and I hope the iTunes development team can look into it. I think my next step will be to re-install iTunes to see if that resolves it.

  • Home Sharing Broken With Update- what version will restore go back to?

Like others my AppleTV loses home sharing when waking from sleep and I have to restart iTunes for it to see my content. If was thinking about restoring the AppleTV to the original settings. Will that revert back to the OS version it came with or the latest OS?

I too am experiencing this issue. I love the ATV2 and like you everything worked flawlessly until 4.2. Now my friends just laugh when I attempt to show-off my ATV only to be greeted with the now infamous "no content" message.
Also, the only "workaround" that works for me every time is restarting iTunes. Toggling Home Sharing (on either the ATV or my Mac) only works some of the time. It's particularly annoying as my Mac is in another room and the whole reason I bought an ATV is so I wouldn't have to get off the couch (to pop a disc in) when I want to watch a movie.
    Please Apple, fix this soon...

  • Will home sharing work with multipul apple ids?

I am trying to set up a home sharing network with several macs in my home all having their own apple id. Will this work?

This site http://www.apple.com/support/homesharing/getstarted/ just specifies the computers need to be running iTunes.  It does mention iTunes for Mac and Windows.

  • HT3819 Will home sharing work with 2 itunes accounts on the same computer?

My husband and I share a laptop.  Can we use Home Sharing to share music with each other? I have an account for each of us on iCloud and the computer has us each set up as users.

No, home sharing will not work for two different users on the same computer on a Windows based system as it requires iTunes running.  It is not possible in Windows for both users to be running iTunes at the same time.
Instead, simply use the File > Add Files/Folder option in iTunes to add the content you want to your iTunesLibrary.  Do the same for your husbands iTunesLibrary under his user.

  • Home Sharing issue with multiple iTunes libraries

I'm hoping someone out there has a suggestion to help solve the problem I'm having with the new iOS 4.3 Home Sharing.
I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro both running the latest system and iTunes versions. Each has an iTunes library with Home Sharing turned on. All works fine between them -- each iTunes library shows up on the other computer's as a shared library. We also have a 2nd gen Apple TV that sees both computers correctly, e.g., both libraries show up under computers on the Apple TV.
The problem is with my iPad and 4th gen iPod touch. Both have been updated to 4.3. I signed in to Home Sharing in the Music setting without a problem. Everything is on the same local WiFi network. The problem is that only one of the iTunes libraries shows up as a Shared Library. And it's not consistent as far as which one shows up, the laptop or the iMac. Sometimes it'll be one, sometimes it's the other. Never is it both of them so I can select which one I want to access. This doesn't really make sense to me, as they both do show up on the Apple TV. Both of my iOS devices have this problem. Is it really supposed to function this way?
    Any suggestions?

I'm glad to hear that it's not just me. I have iTunes libraries on a Mac Mini and on my Macbook. They show up in the shared section in iTunes on the opposite machines, as well as on my 2nd Generation Apple TV. They even show up in the Remote app on my iDevices. However, only one shows up in the iPod music app on the iPhone 3GS and iPad, as well as the iPad video app.
Hopefully, this gets fixed soon. I keep my podcasts on my Macbook and that's the library that's not showing up on the iDevices iPod app.

  • Home Sharing Broken.

I'm running a home share on a Mac Mini running 10.7.1 and iTunes 11. I use an airport express to bridge my Linksys router. My iTunes library is fairly large, but I would hope that wouldn't be an issue.
I don't have any trouble seeing the home share, but it rarely works properly.
None of my iOS devices can reliably connect to and access the home share. A number of things happen:
    1) the iOS devices hangs up trying to connect to the home share.
    2) the iOS devices hangs up trying to read a playlist
    3) the iOS device shows me a playlist, but then doesn't play any audio — the player just skips over songs like they don't exist.
    4) When it does work, audio is about is skip prone as a bad CD.
The funny thing is, when I first installed the Airport Express it worked without a hitch and I was elated. In the weeks since, performance has degraded to this point and I'm not sure what recourse to take.
I've restarted the router, restarted home sharing on all the devices, restarted iTunes on the Mac Mini.
To my knowledge, there are no alternatives out there, either. If there are, I'd be willing to hear about them. Though it seems silly to go pay for something that Apple is providing for free, this frustration has gone beyond "free" into severe opportunity costs for me. It is just as silly to me to continue to try to use something that is obviously so flawed. I wonder how Apple continues to sell Apple TVs and such with so many people having this issue — it's false advertising!

Thank you Ian. You've inadvertently answered another question, which is how do I send music and videos to Airport Expresses and Apple TVs. That's the Remote app? Rather than the music and video apps.
My library is actually 67GB with 6300 songs. Not massive I don't think. And it's only going to grow.
It looks like I am going the same way as you: Mac mini server, with Airport Expresses for music and Apple TVs for videos, so actually the music app would just be a stop-gap while the rest of the hardware came and the Remote app solved all my problems. That said, now that I know Home Sharing is so flakey I'm reluctant to make the investment.
(However, the only way to get mobile music around the house with a bluetooth speaker is with the music app.)
I'm playing round with Plex at the moment. Will play around with Plex and docking stations/bluetooth speakers for music, and Plex and Chromecasts for video. Then maybe a cheap Windows PC for a media server.
    Thanks for your reply Ian.

  • Home sharing sync with other computers

I have two computers with iTunes. They are logged into my account with Home Sharing setup. We have downloaded asps on the main PC but they don't appear on the other. I assume Home Sharing can make it where both PCs show the same apps. Isn't that right? Is there a setting I'm missing?

    Hello naremaka,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please ensure you have Automatic Transfer enabled, as it is disabled by default.
    Setting up Automatic Transfer
Automatic Transfer can transfer your newly-purchased apps, books, music, TV shows, and movie purchases to your other computers set up for Home Sharing.
To automatically transfer content between computers, click the Settings button in the lower-right while viewing a Home Share and select which content to transfer. Automatic transfer of iTunes Store content is off by default.
Note: The Settings and Import button aren't present if you're using Music Sharing, which is different from Home Sharing.
Automatic transfer applies to new purchases from the iTunes Store whenever they are made. However, updates aren't transferred (such as those from the App Store).
Automatic transfer only applies to iTunes Store content you purchase or download after enabling Home Sharing.
Previously downloaded or non-iTunes Store content can only be manually transferred. It may be necessary to authorize iTunes Store content for playback on other computers.
Audiobooks purchased through the iTunes Store can be automatically or manually transferred.
Home Sharing can't transfer or stream audiobook content purchased from Audible.com. See Audible.com for assistance in using their content on multiple computers.
In addition, rentals from the iTunes Store can't be streamed or transferred to another computer using Home Sharing.

  • IOS Remote and Home Sharing problems with iTunes 10.6.3

I'm having a problem with Home Sharing and the iOS Remote app accessing iTunes since the 10.6.3 update. I have the following:
2011 Mac Mini Server running Lion 10.7.4 and iTunes 10.6.3
    IPhone 4 running iOS 5.1
    iPad 2 running iOS 5.1.1
    Latest model Apple TV
The Remote app on both the iPhone and iPad are unable to connect to the iTunes library on the Mini (the app will just sit there trying to connect but never make a connection). The Apple TV is showing the same behaviour: when I go into 'Computers' it tries to connect to my library without success.
    I've tried a few things:
    1) Turning off and re-enabling Home Sharing on the Mac Mini
    2) Deleting my library in the iOS app and then re-adding it
In both cases this seemed to work at first, but then after a while I was unable to connect again.
I have since discovered that if I quit and restart iTunes on the Mac this seems to resolve the issue on all of the other devices. But again this is a short term fix and after a while they are once again unable to connect.
The Mac Mini is always on and is set to not sleep (although I have to enter the password again after an hour).
At first I thought this might be time related, and that if the Mac had been idle for a while and the drives were 'sleeping' then the issue would occur. However, if I have left the Mac for several hours and then go back to it and login and start something playing in iTunes the other 3 devices still cannot connect even though iTunes is active and reading from the drive. As soon as I restart iTunes they can all see the library again for a while.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    thanks
    Mark

Same thing here except I'm not running server software on the Mac Mini. The Apple support person said that iTunes is the same, server or not. He recommeded setting sleep to never, but I get the same connection problems. I also automatically restart the Mini and relaunch iTunes on startup every morning at 6 AM. And, as with your experience, the only temporary solution is to quit and restart iTunes at the time that I want to connect. Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad all have the same connection problem. My only hope at this point is 10.8. I have to say, 10.7 has never behaved better than a beta release. I hope they took a little more time with Mountain Lion.
Sorry I don't have a solution. I wanted to add my name to the list and hope someone out there has some insight to share.

  • Home Sharing issues with iPhone 6 Plus

    Hi guys,
I'm having problems with streaming music and video on my iPhone 6 plus from my Macbook Pro (mid 2010 model) using iTunes' Home Sharing . I am able to stream without any issues using my iPhone 4S and my Apple TV, however.
I am using iTunes version 12.0.1.26, iOS 8.1.2, and OSX 10.9.5.
Using my 6 plus, I am able to connect to my iTunes library, both music and video. Album art shows up for music but no cover art for the videos. So, all in all, I am able to see the contents of my library.
However, when I try to play songs, a couple things may happen. First, nothing plays for about 10 seconds; then a second or two of the song plays followed by silence again, appearing as if it's buffering. Second thing that may happen is that a second or two plays immediately followed by silence. If I press next to play the next song, what usually happens is that nothing plays, although the song title does appear.
As seen in this video, I don't have any issues with my WIFI connection or internet speed, as demonstrated using the iPhone 4S and Apple TV.
I have no clue as to why this is happening.
Hopefully someone could shed some light with this issue. Please feel free to comment. I'm open to and appreciate any suggestions while Apple tries to find a solution. Thanks.

    UPDATE
So, after working with the guys at Apple, they we were to provide a solution.  Now I have no problems using Home Sharing with my iPhone 6 Plus!!!
(I should add that I have the Linksys Advanced Dual-Band N Router (E2500))
The issue was fixed by giving one of the wi-fi channels a different name, thus splitting the channels into 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.  Then, I connected my iPhone to one channel (2.4 GHz) and my MacBook Pro to the other channel (5GHz).  In this configuration, I have had no issues streaming my music and video.
It seems that the problem is some kind of interference between both devices when using the same channel (i.e., when both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channel share the same name).

  • I believe I found the fix solving home sharing issues with Windows 7

I was having a problem with my Windows 7 PC while trying to connect iTunes home sharing and my Apple TV.  While speaking to Apple support, the tech told me that home sharing uses port 3689.  I searched the web and found this link explaining how to open a port on your PC.  The issue seems to be with Windows firewall, or the anti virus software controlling the Windows firewall.  I use Norton anti virus so when I opened the Windows firewall selection in the control panel, the Norton window opened and the fix was identical to the one shown in this link.  http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-7/open-a-port-in-windows-7s-firewall/
Follow the instructions on the page and for step #7, enter 3689.  When you get to step #10, I typed in "Apple TV Home Sharing" so I could identify the port later on.  I made these changes, rebooted the computer, started iTunes, turned on the Apple TV and everything worked.  Try it and this should solve what seems to be a common problem.

Solved - at least all good so far.
I had to add rules to my firewall software (Symantec Endpoint Protection) for Bonjour (UDP 5353) and DAAP (TCP 3689).  Once I did that, the other librares were shown in SHARING and the Apple TV reliably connects.
What I don't understand was why it worked at all without the rules in place.

  • Can home sharing work with the ipad2?

Does home sharing apply to the iPad2?  I'm looking for alternates to syncing since I am having trouble with syncing
the device from my computer.  Itunes begins to freeze shortly after syncing begins-even the apple senior tech was confused?  Any ideas?

It works with the first gen iPad, and I can see no reason why it wouldn't work on the second gen (there is info on how to enable home sharing here http://www.apple.com/itunes/inside-itunes/2011/03/itunes-102-and-ios-43-extend-h ome-sharing-playback-to-your-mobile-devices.html)

  • Apple TV home sharing broken.. again.......

I just updated Apple TV and iTunes because yet again home sharing wasn't working.  This has been a constant on again off again problem since I purchased my Apple TV over two years ago.  A new fix will come out and it will work, then a new update will come out and it stops working again...
Currently I get homesharing enabled on both my PC in iTunes and on AppleTV and go to my music library.  I can see my library and play one song.  After the single song plays and it doesn't matter which song as I have tested it multiple times it advances as if it will play another song then just stops working.  In order to get it working again I have to disable home sharing on both iTunes and AppleTV and enable them again only to have it play one song and rinse, repeat.
I know this is a known issue in the past as I have seen many complaints in the past two years.  Can you guys please just get this fixed and leave it fixed and stop jacking with it.  It's a real pain in the a$$ to have this $90 brick on top of my entertainment center.  When it works, I love it, when you guys "fix/update" it again it ****** me off to the point that I want to walk into the Apple store and destroy it in front of everyone for the piece of crap it currently is.
    Please address this issue ASAP.
    Thanks!

Home sharing has nothing to do with Netflix.
Power cycle the ATV if there are issues with the device not displaying the home screen properly.

  • Potential Solution: Home Sharing issues with iTunes 10.6

TL;DR: On a hunch, I changed the power settings of the ATV to never sleep. Since then, I have not had any issues. Granted, it's only been a couple of days, but it seems to have done the trick.
    Folks,
Wanted to share my experience with Home Sharing issues after upgrading to iTunes 10.6. These forums a rampant with reports of the issue, so I'll defer to the search field above if you don't know what I am talking about. In short: iTunes 10.6 seems to have busted Home Sharing.
For those who do, here's what I found:
For some reason, is saw a very large number of established sessions from my Apple TV (ATV) into port 3689 on my Mac. This is the port that ATV uses to query iTunes to see what's available via Home Sharing (e.g.: what movies, songs, pictures, etc are available for display on the ATV).
A sniffer cap and some observation of the power indicator on the ATV indicated that while it was sleeping, the ATV was querying iTunes. It would power on for a sec (wake on LAN, maybe?), issue some queries, then sleep.
When this happened, the TCP sessions created were never town down. As such, I would eventually see 200+ established sessions on port 3689. I don't know exactly how many it took to make this happen, but when I saw this, iTunes stopped accepting new connections.
Of course, bouncing iTunes would remedy the issue for a while, but it would return.
On a hunch, I changed the power settings of the ATV to never sleep. Since then, I have not had any issues. Granted, it's only been a couple of days, but it seems to have done the trick.
I would be interested to hear if it works for others.
    Happy viewing,
    Chris

    Thanks for posting this.
I've been searching for an option of how to approach this problem.
I picked up the new AppleTV when it was released, but it has made iTunes fairly useless from a Home Sharing standpoint.
I also observed the massive number of TCP connections being opened against iTunes, but never closed.
As expected, I could manually kill a few of these connections, and then could connect again, even without closing iTunes.
I performed most of my testing with Windows 7, but while troubleshooting I had the same issue with iTunes on an old Mac Mini I had sitting around.
I will try your solution, which makes a lot of sense, but it would be nice if Apple fixed the real problem.
    Thanks again.
