Home Sharing - controls?

I have a 1st generation IPad and a 2nd generation IPad along with an Iphone 4.
I have setup each of these on the home sharing though Itunes however my 10 yr old uses the 1st IPad and I do not want her to have access to all of the movies which I have in ITunes.
Is there anyway to do this?
I have the Sharing Preferences set to Share over Local Network and share only selected play list (with a password and with out password) but when I opened the shared Library on the ipad it has access to everything in ITunes
I have confirmed that the sofware updates are current on the computer (mac mini) and the ipads and iphone.
Have looked in online fourms but could not find an answer.
Also once I click done on the Home Sharing setup (done) the Home Sharing Icon disappears so I cannot see or adjust what the sharing folder contains

I've been experiencing almost the same issue since "upgrading" to iOS 6.  I'm using the newest version of iTunes on my Mac and I have a 3 Gen. iPad.  If I do not constantly keep the video controls onscreen when watching a video the player locks up and I can't pause, stop, or use any of the other on screen controls (actual volume controls still work). When I press the home button the audio still continues to play - sometimes even after I've fully shut down the video player app.  This then requires a full reboot of the iPad to correct.  This only happens when I'm watching videos through home sharing and not when the videos are actually saved on the iPad.
The above issues is accompanied with the home sharing library being completely messed up when displayed on my iPad.  Some TV seasons are missing and others are displayed multiple times. There are even movie titles and album covers from my music collection that show up on the TV show list (they do not respond when touched).
Is anyone at Apple even working on a fix?  Is there any way this issue can be directly sent to apple tech support? Does anyone from apple read these forums?
This issue has seriously impacted my enjoyment of my Apple devices.  Couple this major glitch with the maps fiasco (i gotten lost while using) and the loss of the YouTube app and I'm starting to think that it might be time for a change.

You can't, you will need to get a new remote.

  • Can't control what gets Home Shared?

    Hey gang-
I have Home Sharing enabled on my desktop iMac as well as on our brand new Apple TV. Works great- except that I want to Home Share only my Music from iTunes- not my Movies or TV Shows. In the iTunes Preference Pane, under Sharing, I have chosen "Selected Playlists" and only "Music".
But on Apple TV under Computers it continues to display all my Movies and TV Shows- in addition to Music. Is there no way to control this? I rebooted both my Mac and power-cycled the Apple TV, but no help.
    Thanks!

Same problem here. I went away for a few days and came back to find ATV2 not connecting to network...despite the network being clearly visible and connected in the setting menu. ATV2 would say its not connected and not be able to access the Itunes library.
I reset everything, re-entered all the info and finally decided that the ATV had gone wrong, went out and bought a new one (i need 2 anyway) got home to find that the original one had now decided to work ok. Sadly it only did so for about an hour now its gone off again.
Bloody frustrating. I updated it hoping it would fix the problem but to no avail.

  • Cannot check the box "only allowed paired or home sharing remotes to control itunes"

I cannot connect my home sharing so I go to Edit>Preferences>Devices>check box only allowed paired or home sharing remotes to control itunes> Then click OK. After that I go to see whether the box is checked or not and I found that it is not checked. I don't know how to deal with it because every time I check the box, it's unchecked so cannot check box only allowed paired or home sharing remotes to control itunes. Is this the problem that causes the home sharing problem?

Hmmm, sounds weird. If someone else has experienced this maybe they will jump in here, but if not, you can always call Nike+. Surprisingly they answer their phone quite quickly.
Anyway, here's my shot at it:
I will assume you have downloaded the Nano updater ( http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ ).
I would eject and disconnect the Nano (perhaps restarting my computer) and close iTunes, then reopen iTunes, reconnect and see if the box is available.

I switched on home sharing on My computer And on appleTV, but still cannot Control AppleTV with My ipad

    Hi Wikowiko!
If you want to be able to control your Apple TV through your iPad, you will want to download a free app from Apple called Remote. An article we have published online can help you understand more of the features of the Remote app, and can be found here:
About Remote app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!

That is why I said to restore via iTunes, did you check the link?
This will put it back to factory settings and you can set it up with the new ID once you reconnect with your HDTV. This is not done via ethernet, as per the link you need to connect to the computer via micro usb. You cannot bypass home sharing.
FYI: An Apple ID cannot be deleted so the old one would still exist (even if you no longer use the email account it is associated with).

  • I've turned off home-sharing but remote still controls computer and itunes at the same time as the TV. What gives?!

I've turned off both home sharing and turned off the link from my computer to my remote via AppleTV but when I hit play on my remote to control appleTV, my itunes always opens and starts playing on my Macbook Pro. Has this happened to ahyone else? I cannot get it to stop. The only solution right now is to completely turn off my computer if I want to use appleTV.
    Thanks

default then remotes control all devices unless you bind it to a device you do that in settings
and home sharing don't have any impact on remotes

  • How can i connect home sharing and the control app with 2 IP addresses?

i am using my macbook pro at school and i also take it back home, and when i'm home the home sharing with my iPhone 5's Remote app works perfectly fine, just that when i'm back to res at school it doesn't work for some unknown reason. i've checked everything including the firewall and stuff and itunes home sharing is turned on, i even tried using another home sharing apple id but it still doesn't work. somebody please help!!!
    thanks!

If you use eithernet for your main connection then just plug the TC bridged into the network.
If you use wireless for your internet connection then you can use the TC isolated from the network by ethernet.. but this is really only convenient on a desktop Mac.
The instructions I put in this thread with screenshots.. see near the bottom.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30
It is a bit tricky so if you have questions ask back here.
Just to say a USB for firewire external drive is faster and more reliable than a TC.. cheaper to buy as well.. although since you already have the TC that is not a concern.. but you can ebay the TC and buy a bigger and better external drive with the proceeds.

  • HT3819 Home Sharing - Parental Control ...

Is it possible to restrict what your children can watch from their iPads whilst accessing your itunes library via home sharing?

    iTunes preferences.

  • Home Sharing is not working following update to iOS 5.1 and iTunes 10.6

    First, the problem:
I am not able to see any shared libraries  when using the Music and Video apps on my iPhone 4.
    Next, the specs:
iTunes 10.6 on MBP running Mac OS X 10.7.3
    iPhone 4 runinng iOS 5.1
Wi-Fi connections for both MBP and iPhone 4
Both connect to same network using same SSID with static IP addressing and UPnP enabled.
MBP connects using 5 GHz N-Only anntena.
iPhone 4 connects using 2.4 GHz NG-Mixed antenna. (Hopefully next iteration of iPhone supports 5 GHz.)
    Third, what I have tried:
Everything in "Troubleshooting Home Sharing" (KB Article TS2972 - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972).
Re-entering my Apple ID credentials for both Music and Movies in iOS Settings.
Re-entering my Apple ID credentials for Home Sharing in iTunes.
Setting up Port Forwarding for both the iPhone 4 and MBP in my router for the relevant TCP and UDP ports (just in case). However, this did not help.
    Finally, what I have noticed:
My Remote app on the iPhone 4 works without issue and can control iTunes running on my MBP.
My Air Mouse app on the iPhone 4 works without issue and can control my MBP.
My wireless printer connected to the network via the 2.4 GHz antenna (it only supports 802.11g) is usable - I can print to it and access its embedded web server management tool.
So, in the end, Home Sharing no longer works on my iPhone 4 after updating both IOS and iTunes (all other apps and software updates are current for both the phone and the MBP). I believe I have ruled out any issues with which antenna is being used for which device. I am out of ideas on how to get Home Sharing to work again.
Any suggestions or possible solutions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you gurus in advance!

Spoke to a "senior advisor" in the Apple TV department.  Her suggestions:  change channel in router to minimize/eliminate wifi interference from other users; move router away from any metal - i.e., DVD player, phone modem, etc.; keep router away from wireless 2.4 gH phones, which are "notorious" for crashing wifi routers.  So she confirms that the problem is one of connection to router suddenly dropping out.
My own feeling is that none of these fixes will do the trick, because it seems pretty clear that there is a hardware component here - the timing of the drops seems like an overheating issue.  It takes 35-40 minutes for the box to warm up enough for the first drop; then each consecutive drop happens quicker than the one before, as it heats up more.  Each time it drops, its tiny brain gets a little more scrambled; last night it finally wouldn't start up again at all.
My suggestion is that everyone who is experiencing this problem, please call Apple tech support and ask to speak to a senior advisor in the Apple TV department.  Make them aware of this problem!

  • Home Sharing no longer works between iTunes and Apple TV.

I've been through all the forums, tried all the solutions provided and I have come to the conclusion that Home Sharing just no longer works between iTunes on a PC and my Apple TV.  Does anyone know if this issue will be addressed or should I list my Apple TV up on eBay?  (along with my iPad, iPod, and iPhone, since all system no longer sync together as before.)
    My issue:
My iTunes library is no longer listed under "Computers" on the Apple TV.
The airplay icon no longer shows up in iTunes. (Version 11)
I cannot play music/content from my iPhone or iPad via remote that is stored in my iTunes library through my Apple TV.
I can however play music/content that is stored locally on my iPhone and iPad through my Apple TV.
My firewall settings are allowing access to Apple TV.
After logging into my router, I see no issues there.
I've logged in/out, turned home sharing on/off, de-authorized/authorized, and restarted my PC, Apple TV, and Router.
All devices are logged into the same iTunes account, and are on the same wireless network.
    Time for a solution Apple.

If you turn off wifi on your  Computer and connect it to the apple tv using an ethernet cable can you see your library under computers in Apple TV.
If yes the issue is with your wifi not the Apple TV
You may want to try the troubleshooting article
    I also found this article
    iTunes Home Sharing Not Working
Not working and sometimes when it is working, it cuts out in the middle, or when you click on the computer name, the focus goes away from the library.  In other words, really weird.
    What it is
iTunes has a feature called "Home Sharing" - it basically allows you to share your entire or part of your library with other instances of iTunes in your home network.  It requires you to login to your iTunes account on both computers.  A typical scenario is to enable Home Sharing on your desktop machine and then access the library from your iPad, Apple TV, iPhone, Mac, etc.
In my case, I have iTunes on my desktop machine running Windows XP in the attic with Home Sharing enabled and then I access the library from my Macbook and Apple TV, depending on what I want.  How to use Home Sharing can be found here.
    Symptoms
Home Sharing machine not showing up in Apple TV or the Macbook
The Macbook home sharing not showing up on my desktop
    Home Sharing working intermittently
    Connections getting cut of intermittently
Usually, restarting iTunes or the desktop computer will make things work.
Sometimes, restarting the Macbook or the Apple TV will make things work.
    The "working" doesn't last long
The FixOn the desktop computer where the Home Sharing is enabled, I disabled the "QoS Packet Scheduler" from the network connection:
    Open Control Panel
    Open Network Connections
Right-Click on your connection (in my case, it was "Wireless Network Connection 4"
    Select Properties
    Uncheck "QoS Packet Scheduler"
    Click OK
    Restart iTunes if necessary
After doing the above, Home Sharing worked like a charm.

  • ITunes and Windows 8 Home Sharing (Possible Fix)

If this fix has been posted elsewhere then I apologize, but I wanted to share what I stumbled on as a possible for for iTunes Home Sharing and Windows 8. I did a lot of port forwarding, both on my router and my Norton firewall, but nothing seemed to help. After a few minutes my Apple TV and iOS devices would stop seeing my iTunes library. The only way to fix it was to reboot the router.
On a whim I looked in my Device Manager and found under Network Adapters a device called Microsoft Kernel Debug Network Adapter. I disabled this, rebooted my computer, and have since no issues with Home Sharing. It's only been a few hours, but that is the longest I've gone since installing Windows 8. I'll look in the morning to see if it still works.
So give this method a try and see what happens. Hopefully it will fix your problems.

Here are the three steps I took to get Home Sharing working successfully on Apple TV. This has worked for the better part of a week so hopefully it will work well for others.
In your software firewall create two new Inbound Rules. Open port 3689 (TCP) and port 5353 (UDP) to All Programs.
If your hard drive goes to sleep after a certain period, be sure to change to something greater than 30 min. (Control Panel -> Power Options -> Change Plan Settings -> Change Advanced Power Settings -> Hard disk -> Turn off hard disk after -> Setting)
On your Apple TV change when it goes to sleep. I changed mine to 10 hours.
This seems to keep the connection alive. On occassion it will look like it gets stuck loading, but just let it go. At some point it wil kick on. If you generates a connection error just try loading the media again and it should start.

  • Home Sharing will not work with my Windows 8 64bit with new itunes.  All of my Apple TVs will not see my library and my iphones will not function with the "Remote" App.  They all did before.  Only thing that has changed is new PC/itunes.  Any Ideas?

Installed a new Windows PC on my home network.  PC is Windows 8/64bit. with latest version of itunes 11.1.4.62 for 64bit.  My itunes works, but I can not get Home Sharing to function now.  None of my Apple TV's can see my computer library and prompt me to turn it on.  All of my iphones, pods, pad, can not use the "Remote" app.  When you prompt your phone in Remote App to "add library" and you get the code....iTunes doesnt give you the remote screen where you can enter the code.  I have reloaded iTunes, reset my router, updated all devices.  You can turn on "Home Sharing" on iTunes, but then it closes and doesnt seem to link my devices like it use to.  Also, when the new version of iTunes is up on my PC, you can see the other devices to AirPlay to like you could before.  However, I can send items from my iphone to stream to an Apple TV, I just cant link them all like I could before and control the music playing to multiple Apple TV.  Growing fustrated.  Any ideas, would be helpful.

    Cunning1_
You are a legend!!  I have spent countless hours uninstalling, reinstalling itunes, playing with firewall settings, reading articles on this problem!!  I only have to un-sync my iphone 5 and then the airplay icon magically appeared!!!  Maybe I have too many devices syncing via wi-fi, or maybe it is the Iphone syncing??
Whatever - one step and now I can enjoy my music through my house again!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you

  • Remote not working on iPod touch, Home Sharing

I returned home to school over winter break and tried to play music from my laptop (Windows) in my iTunes library, like I did normally with school. The only change that would affect this was the wifi network.
Anyway, I clicked on the Ramote app on my iPod, and it had a blank scren and read "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer or on Apple TV" using my account. It was already on, and enabled, but turned it off, and back on again just to make sure. Still didn't work. On the blank screen on Remote, I clicked the Settings symbol on the top right, and it prompted me to "Add an iTunes Library" so I tapped that. Next I had to type in a passcode, and it said I would need to type it in in iTunes after selecting my iPod under the devices list. I selected my iPod on the Devices list in my iTunes, but nothing popped up for me to type the numbers into. So, I typed the numbers with the iTunes window open, which obviously didn't work.
I looked on the forums and tried closing and reoppening iTunes, turning on and off the wifi on both my iPod and laptop, deleting and reinstalling the Remote app, turning off wifi sync, repairing Bonjour, doing a hard reset on my iPod, going to edit-->preferences-->sharing and turning it on and off, under preferences under devices I selected to only allow paired remotes but when I went back to it the check mark was gone, I don't have iTunes match on, and under my "Devices" only my iPod shows up (not one with the remote button). I'm clueless. I have the mose recent version of iTunes, and iOS 6 on my iPod.
    Help please?

Under Edit > Preferences > Devices, did you check "Allow iTunes audio control from remote speakers"? I checked that and "Share my library" under Edit > Preferences > Sharing, I'm not sure which one worked but it did.  I opened the Remote app on my iPod, and the name of my iPod showed up on the iTunes list on the left, with a little remote icon. I clicked on that and it opened up the spot where you can input your 4 digit code from the remote app.

  • ITunes sharing among iPhones with different Apple ID's one computer WITHOUT home sharing, shared folder, etc...

I feel like I am losing my mind, here. A few things I want to clear up before you read my question:
No, I am not new to Apple. Yes, I understand that Home Sharing works for any group of devices authrized with my Apple ID. Home Sharing is not my issue.
    1. My wife and I have different iPhones with different Apple IDs.
    2. We only have one computer, on which iTunes is running under my Apple ID.
    3. My iTunes library is far too large to paste into a shared folder. I keep my source folder on a 1TB external hard drive (not enough space on my iMac).
I just want her to be able to plug in and copy music onto her phone from iTunes. Home sharing is great while she's at home on the wifi, but not when she leaves. I created her own user name on my computer, set her iTunes (under her Apple ID) to pull from my library source file, and she can play everything fine, except that she cannot click and drag files onto her phone.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

iTunes Match is associated with one, and only one, iTunes Store Apple ID and country-specific store. The service cannot be shared between Apple IDs.
    Indy Apple Guy wrote:
If we sign up for iTunes with the one account with the majority of the songs, is Home Sharing no longer available to the other two accounts?
Of course it is. iTunes Match has no affect on Home Sharing.
    Indy Apple Guy wrote:
    A.  What happens to the songs on the other two libraries?  Can we never use them?
It is possible to consolidate the tracks from the other iTunes libraries into one and use that for iTunes Match. Make sure the one computer that hosts the library is authorized to play any protected content.
    Indy Apple Guy wrote:
    C.  If we purchase songs/albums while in iTunes Match, and then decide not to use Match in the future, do we lose all our music?
Of course not. Any purchases go to the purchase history for the Apple ID that bought them and as long as the tracks are downloaded and backedup you'll have them as long as you maintain them. Keep in mind that iTunes Match is a service; you don't do anything "in" iTunes Match. It simply "is" in the background.
    Indy Apple Guy wrote:
    D.  If we associate our child's iTouch, will it still keep the parental controls in place so it won't play certain songs that are not appropriate f
Yes, parental controls should continue to work as they have. Although I do not use them, perhaps someone else with experience will weigh in.
