Home Sharing doesn't respect Sharing Prefs in iTunes

It might be worthwhile to note - Home Sharing *DOES NOT* respect the sharing prefs in iTunes.  When you enable Home Sharing for several computers in your household, that means all users can access ALL content in your library.
This may not be what you are intending.
For example in my household I have a dedicated mac mini as a media server. From it, I wanted to share movies and music to my Apple TV, as well as personal computers in the house.  I thought Home Sharing is what I wanted.
Well, yes and no.
I have some content on my personal desktop machine that I may not want the kids having access to - Rated R comedy albums, movies, etc.  I didn't them want to even SEE them (which parental restriction DOES allow, just not playback).  I thought setting the Sharing Preferences in iTunes would set what is available when Home Sharing is enabled. THIS IS NOT THE CASE.
In my instance, you need to enable both iTunes Sharing AND Home Sharing on the media server and turn OFF Home Sharing on all the other computers. This will allow Apple TV to be able to access your media server (it requires Home Sharing). It will also allow other computers access your media server library.  But if you do not want to share everybody's personal libraries, DO NOT enable Home Sharing on the individual computers.
Rule of Thumb:
If you DO NOT have content you want to restrict from younger members of the household, then Home Sharing is the way to go.
If you DO need to restrict content from individual machines, then use iTunes Sharing instead. (Use BOTH if you are using a centralized media server setup and/or AppleTV)
I hope this helps anyone else running into this sort of scenario.

Tallon321 the lack of names is a "feature" of IOS7.  In the new release they eliminated the name caption for the VIDEOS app in both the "Movies" and the "Home Sharing" views.  They did leave the captions for the new "Home Video" view (you can set the Movie Kind to "Home Video" and downloaded "Home Videos" now have their own view on your device).
Bottom line, your options are:
1. Add artwork (with the movie name) to each movie
2. Change the Movie Kind to "Home Video" and download
Note option #2 doesn't help when using Home Sharing.  Home Sharing now never shows the name caption.  I am not sure why this is considered and improvement.  To me the simplest solution would be to always display name captions for videos without artwork, regardless of which view is being presented.

Home Sharing is designed to work on your local network not across the internet/cloud.
Stuff is accessed under the Computers column where your local iTunes library on a local computer would appear.
Home Sharing would share your iTunes content (i.e. stuff stored in itunes on the computer, not in the cloud) with AppleTV or an iPad etc on the SAME network.
AppleTV2 will not be able to see itunes content on the work computer over the internet.  It's not designed to.  if the work computer was on the home network it would.
iCloud is in it's infancy and is not a mature product - iTunes TV Show purchases appear on AppleTV, but currently music does not unless you are subscribed to iTunes Match. I find this rather odd to be honest, along with the inability to buy music on AppleTV2.  Movies purchased in iTunes are not authorised for iCloud viewing currently either.
Maybe it has something to do with iTunes Match 'getting in the way' - i think they assume you'll use that whereas you really want to be able to access Purchased music from the cloud without subscribing to itunes Match which is overkill for some.

    Hi, Dave.
If you're using the BlackBerry browser, you can't configure anything to bypass the RIM servers.  I believe you may do so by using the Opera browser, but I haven't tried it myself so cannot comment with authority.
I hope that clears up the issue for you.

  • HT3819 What's the difference, other than the 24.99, between Home Sharing (free) and iTunes Match (24.99)?

What's the difference, other than the 24.99, between Home Sharing (free) and iTunes Match (24.99)?

Home sharing allows you to share content between computers and devices on your wifi network - so if you have your library on your computer's iTunes and you want to access it on your iPad then both your computer and iPad have to be turned on, iTunes open on your computer, and both need to be connected to the same wifi network.
iTunes Match will upload your music library to the cloud (including music copied from CDs and from other sources) allowing you to accces it from your computer or iPad without requiring your main computer to be on - and if you have access to a network when not at home you can download or stream music from it. It's also acts as a second backup of your content (you should still maintain your own backup of your library).
    iTunes Match, from http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/ :
Once your music is in iCloud, you can play it from any of your devices. Just browse the complete list of all your music stored in the cloud and tap to play to it. You can store up to 25,000 songs in iCloud (more if songs are purchased from the iTunes Store), but only what you play or download is stored on your device. Tap the iCloud download button to download music from an artist, album, or playlist. So you have immediate access to a huge music library without having to worry about the storage space on your device.
But whether it's worth it only you will know. Personally I don't use it, I keep and maintain my own backup of my content and sync it to my devices so that I don't have to rely on being online to access what I might want to listen to,

  • Using Home Sharing to transfer itunes library from old computer to new but connection keeps timing out...anyone have a solution?

    Hello everyone,
I am attempting to use Home Sharing to import my itunes library from my old computer to new (as per instructions on this site), but the connection keeps "timing out" and so the import gets cut short.
Both computers have the new itunes (I updated them last night), but only seem to get about 5 minutes (or 100 songs in) before the connection error occurs.
I have an external hard drive and would use it to transfer my library (which is ~45GB) however my old computer isn't recognizing the hard drive so I thought Home Sharing was a good option...perhaps I was wrong?
    Help Please!
    Thanks

You might need to make sure neither is going to sleep (System Prefs > Energy Saver)
Also check your settings under System Prefs > Security. My sisters new laptop kept logging off due to some setting there.

In Home sharing, I select the songs I want, but the 'Import' button doesn't ever seem to come up. Any help with the new iTunes 11.1?

Are you definately 'home sharing' and not simply 'sharing'.

  • HOME SHARING ISSUE ON ITUNES 11.0.4

    Hi
I cannot connect to Itunes library anymore from external devices (appleTV or from Pioneer AV2 controller via IPAD). Also Itunes doesn't recognize these appliances anymore (on the Imac). Sometimes it does recognize them, but cannot connect to them if you click on it to connect. If you then restart Itunes, Itunes doesn't show these appliances anymore.
I've used Itunes for a long time to stream music to my Pioneer VSX from itunes library; stream music via ipad to my television (via receiver pioneer) or stream movies via Apple TV.
It all worked fine in version 10 of Itunes. All of a sudden it doesn't anymore. I've resetted my router, checked that my network still runs as it should, firewalls are off, homesharing network reinstalled, reinstalled Itunes, etc... nothing seems to fix the problem
I believe it is a bug in Itunes 11, if so: please fix this.
    thanks for your sollution
    kind regards

    Hi Allen
Many thanks for the links, although i was aware of the sleep proxy and its uses. The problem i'm having does seem to be related to this, although the key difference between what i am (or was) experiencing is the definition of 'occasionally' as mentioned on the page you linked to.
What i was experiencing was the mac mini would go to sleep then 60 second later it would stir, as if being woken to reregister its services with the sleep proxy, then it would go back to sleep. Then around 60 seconds later it would do this again, and so on and so forth until it was fully woken in one way or another.
Now i do seem to have made progress after digging around a little further. I did figure out that it was a bonjour service/ or device that was causing the mac mini to stir And as i mentioned in my previous message this behaviour would cease if itunes was closed or home sharing was turned off. So the only thing on the network that was connected to this was my 2 apple TVs. As a test i unplugged both boxes and put the mini to sleep again. Then i waited and waited and the mini stayed soundly asleep.
I have since plugged the 2 ATVs back in, one at a time, and the mini now seems to be sleeping for around an hour before it wakes, presuming to do the sleep proxy service thingo.
i'm just running another test to prove to myself that it is actually back to a more normal state with both ATVs plugged in, so fingers crossed.
if anyone knows, does this now sound like a normal setup with the way the sleep proxy works?
i suppose i should have done this at the start, but i have 1 airport extreme, and 2 ATVs (and few ipads, iphones and the like all onthe network), if that helps.

  • Home Sharing with multiple iTunes accounts

I have set up Home Sharing between our iMac and our AppleTV2 using my wife's Apple ID. The AppleTV sees my wife's iTunes library and plays music from it. However, my wife has songs in her library purchased under both her iTunes account and my iTunes account. Our computer is authorized for both accounts, and all the music plays fine on the computer. However, when AppleTV tries to play a song purchased under my account, it puts up a message that says "Authorization is required" to play that song. Is there any way to get AppleTV to play music purchased under both iTunes accounts? As it is, Home Sharing is useless because anytime it encounters a song purchased under my account, it stops playing music. I would even be happy if it would just skip songs it can't play, as long as it would continue on to the next song that could be played.

I've been trying to thing what might be different about my set up versus yours in case (which may be likely) you are correct and your wife's library is authorised and plays your content in her iTunes application.
I deliberately chose my wife's music to check my set up because she pays for her own iTunes account, whereas my children have their own accounts but I give them an allowance and send them gift vouchers from my account (which I thought might just be relevant). I later realised that my wife's library is also on our homesharing ID (which again might have been relevant), so I've now tried it with my youngests purchased and protected content because his library is using our homesharing ID.
    I'll keep thinking.

  • 5 apple tvs home sharing the same itunes library on minimac, does it work?

    hi everyone,
I have 5 apple tv and 1 macmini with my itunes library (music and movies).
is it possible to turn on home sharing in all of them in order to share the macmini library ???
I'm suspicious that it works just for 4 apple tvs, not for 5.... is that correct?
    thanks in advance,

  • Can You Home Sharing Between Two iTunes Accounts

    Hi,
My Dad has a vast amount of music on his itunes account and my old iPod used to be linked up to his account. But recently I got a iPhone 4 and I created my own iTunes account. I would like to be able to listen to the music on my Dad's account as well as the few songs I've purchased on mu account. Can I use home sharing (or something similar) so that I can listen to his music and my music on my iPhone?
    Thanks in advance!
    Surfista36

Simply enable Home Sharing with the same iTunes account info on all devices.
You still make purchases using your own iTunes account.

  • HT202213 Trying to activate home sharing with new iTunes update, says error #5506, any ideas?  Worked great before this update!

I'm trying to use home sharing with the latest iTunes update.  Keep getting error message 5506-any idea how to resolve this error and share at home?

Well, I tried a few other things and one worked but again just the first time I tried connecting to the desktop PC with iTunes. I flashed my router with the latest update and the ATV2 could see the iTunes library and I was able to play media. Later in the day I was going to show off to my daughter that I had fixed it and, to my dismay, no go. I tried opening the suggested ports but no luck.
I then tried loading iTunes on a Win7 laptop and it works perfectly with the ATV2. Both the laptop and the ATV2 are connected to the router wirelessly while the Desktop is connected to the router by Ethernet. Not sure if this is part of the issue as it sounds like this didn't work for others. The only other difference between the laptop and desktop is that the desktop has Win7 SP1 loaded while the laptop does not; now I'm scarred to load it though I don't think that's the issue. All in all, a very vexing situation. Hopefully Apple comes up with a solution soon.

  • Home Sharing between 3 itunes accounts on one Mac?

We just brought home a MAC computer and our family has 3 itunes accounts. We would like to be able to access all 3 accounts on the home sharing feature for our apple tv's and our iphones. Is this possible?  If so, how would I set it up?
    Thank you!!!!

To keep 3 iTunes accounts you will need to use 3 user accounts on the Mac. Yes you can use home sharing with all of them but you must use the same ID for homesharing (not iTunes) on all of them. You can only home share with the active account at any one time.
