Home sharing dropping on MacBookPro Retina

Dear Forum,
Ever since Mac OSX 10.9 and iTunes 11 I've found home sharing to stutter, and then halt unexpectedly for my laptop.
My files are all on a 2011 iMac, connected to an Apple Airport Extreme via 1Gb ethernet.  The Airport then connects to my laptop via 5GHz WIFI.
Both computers are running latest 10.9 OS.  Both iTunes 11.x (latest).  I can see the sharerd library, and can find my TV shows.
The shows start almost instantly on the laptop, but after 7 or 10 minutes the show just stops.
Monitoring the network traffic shows no problems with transfer speeds 4-5 Mb/sec, until all of a sudden the show stops.  Network traffic drops to zero.
If I exit the TV show and double click the episode again it starts up and the show runs for 10 or so minutes.  Network traffic continues, but It then hangs again.
Restarting iTunes, rebooting the router, rebooting the computers.....no luck.  Tried turning off Time Machine backups...no luck.
Now the interesting part is my kids iPad can watch the same shared files no problem.  Our Apple TV sees and runs the shared files no problem.
I would think it's a hardware issue with my laptop except that it worked before OS 10.9 and iTunes 11.
Any ideas or suggestions what to check, reset, preference to delete?
Thanks,
Ryan

I have the extact same problem.
My setup consist of a MacMini Server 2011 that share its iTunes library via Home Sharing. Streaming to my Apple TV2 and my iPad Air work just fine but when streaming to my MacBook Air 2013 the video content stops after around 10 min or so.
All my devices are running the latest software 10.9.1 and 7.0.4.

  • ATV2 Home Sharing Drops Since Mountain Lion Upgrade

I've found some stuff close to my issue, but really nothing addressing my issue.  I have 3 Apple TV 2's.  When running my 27" Mac on Lion, everything streamed wonderfully.  I have a BIG router capable of handling movie streaming, so the network should NOT be the problem.  After installing Mountain Lion, all three of my Apple TV's have been getting dropped from Home Sharing during the middle of a media stream.  It happens with regularity with music and movies.  Even Netfilx streams drop because Home Sharing drops out.  The only way to fix it thus far is to disconnect and re-connect Home Sharing at the 27" Mac, where the streams originate.  I'm certain this problem is due to the Mountain Lion upgrade.  Is there a fix or do I need to wait for Apple to push something out to us?

For anyone else having the "white screen" issue with youtube, and/or yahoo issue. I seemed to have repaired the issue. I turned the parental controls off for both of my kids accounts, restarted my Mac, and the problem vanished.
I also turned the parental controls back on after this, restarted the computer, and the problem came back.
*** This is 100% a Parental Control/Mountain Lion glitch. Hopefully Apple knows and is working on a solution. The sooner they fix it, the sooner I can turn the parental controls back onto my kids accounts.

  • Home sharing drops out about once an hour

Hi I have a brand new, week old 3rd Gen Rev A Apple TV and about once an hour the home sharing drops out stopping whatever we are watching.
Router is a netgear cg814wg v3 located about 15-20 metres away from the Apple TV, Computer is running iTunes 11.4.0.18.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • Home Sharing Drop solution

Installed apple-TV(2-nd gen) and faced a problem many users do. Home sharing drops after few minutes, requires itunes or apple-tv reset, works another few minutes, drops again. I tried to identify the problem but didn't receive an answer from either apple support team or my internet provider. I know for a fact that there is a bug with 2-nd gen apple-tv software, and here is the only solution which finally worked. Since apple support team doesn't have a solution to this problem, I offering it due to goodwill. Whats causing the issue is the separation between wifi network and Ethernet network. Here is exactly what I did step by step:
Log into your router page. Go to the Connected Devices. To the right of each connected device is an edit tab. Click edit and at the edit device screen, de-select DHCP and give the device an open available IP address. Not sure what static ip is available? Go to the Connection/ Local IP Network and change the DHCP ending address from 255 to say 250. You now have IP addresses 10.0.0.254, 10.0.0.253, 10.0.0.252, and 10.0.0.251 free to use as static IP addresses. If the router gives your device a hosted name of "unknown", Put the name of your device in the comments field so that you can see at the connected devices page, what your static ip address is assigned to. While not necessary, it helps. Once you give the devices the IP address, click save.
Lastly, click the "advanced" tab on the routers main menu to the left. Click on port forwarding and click on enabled. Click on "add port forwarding". Under service name, give a name like "AppleTV123". Under service type, for port 123 choose "TCP". Under Server IP address, enter the static IP address your gave for the Apple TV device ( i.e. 10.0.0.254). At the start public port, enter 123. Do the same for end public port and private port. Click save. Do this for each forwarded port that Apple suggests and that I listed in my previous post. The important thing is that port 3689 is UDP and not TCP. This is what made it work for me. Once you have all the ports in, Click on port triggering under advanced and make sure it's disabled.Do the same for DMZ and device discovery under advanced tab.  Finally under the "trouble shooting" tab, click on "Restore/reset gateway" tab.  At the top is "Reset" press the reset button to restart the gateway. Click on that and all your lights on your router will turn off except the power button. Based upon other conditions, your router will reset within a few minutes , maybe faster.
I'm not sure what computer you are using but Mac under settings date and time, it allows you to choose the time zone and to sync the date and time automatically. I accepted this and just made sure the Apple TV settings for date and time are set to manual but have the same time some as the computer.
My Apple TV has gone to sleep and regained the Home Sharing connection. I have had zero drops since I performed this.
I really hope this method will be taken into consideration, and software fix will be implemented.
    Thank you!

Hey spma3 and everyone who is reading this post: originaly this solution was offered by spma3. I do apologize for posting this as if if was my solution. I didnt mean to claim it to be mine, please do not misunderstand me. The purpose of reposting it was to make sure that more people find it and solve the problem. Ideally, I would love apple support team to look into this, make changes, and roll out a successfull software update in order to solve it. I personaly spent hours to find this solution and implement it. The problem is: apple team is probably aware of the issue but no solution is offered at this point. Its obvious that there is a bug, however somebody has to make apple team pay attention and implement solution asap. And thats the only reason why I started this post and also submitted it as a feedback to known issues. My purpose: take it to apple team, and make them react promptly. I very often find bright individuals who find solutions but without taking further step its known to a few. This just doesnt cut it. As a person who invested in device, and has to now make research in order to make it work, I feel obliged to do it when I know that somebody discovered possible cause of the issue. Very often we do very little when we can do more. I do admire and appreciate your hard work ant time spma3, however I am taking one more step in order to bring it to attention of apple team. Once again, please do not judge me for presenting spma3's idea as my own. I am not the one who thought this thru. I am simply trying to make sure it gets to apple team attention.
    Thank you!

  • Home Sharing drops when I move from one router to another on an extended network???  HELP.

I have an airport extreme as my main router.  I bought an airport express to get a stronger signal across the house.  The express is set to bridge mode.  When I start playing a movie using home sharing near one wireless router and move to a location near the other router, the home sharing drops.  I have to return to my computer and close itunes and reopen to get it to work again.  Very frustrating.  I have to reset iTunes constantly.  Please help.
    Thanks,
    JOE

Ahhhhh. I was running in circles not being familiar with MacOSX. However, I seem to have accomplished what I wanted. I hadn't noticed that I could delete the other account by clicking the lock icon. Once I deleted it the migrated account became the default autologin account and all is well now. Cool. Pretty simple.

  • Apple TV & Homehub 3 Home Sharing Drop Out

Good morning all and my apologies for posting this in the BT Vision section but I didn't know where else to go.
I've had BT Infinity for a few months now and been generally happy with the service.  I'm a Mac user and at the weekend I decided to purchase an Apple TV 3.  One of the main things I wanted to do with the ATV3 was to be able to use Home Sharing from my iTunes on my Mac.  I set everything up and it was all looking good, within minutes I was happily streaming video to my Apple TV.  5 minutes into playback however it dropped out.  It said on the Apple TV that Home Sharing needed to be enabled, I went back to the Mac, Home Sharing was enabled but I reconnected it again and it started working again.  5 minutes later again it disconnected.
I'm no network/router expert but even then I knew something was wrong.  I started to trawl the Apple forums looking for people with similar issues and found a LOT!  Problem is that everyone has different routers, issues, fixes and none of the solutions I tried seem to work for me, such as changing the channel on the router, reboots etc.
Basically I'm just really stuck now.  I'm not the most technical of people (but I do know some stuff) but I'd love some advice if anyone can help.  At the moment the Apple TV is practically unusable for me and I really would love to be able to have this working as when it does work for those brief few minutes it works really well and does exactly what I want it to.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I should add I found the following on the Apple forums although this seemed to be quite an old post (2 or 3 years) and was for an older Home Hub as when I checked I couldn't seem to add the Port Maps in the same way as this post and got confused
    Solution:
    1. Update the software on Apple TV (Settings | General | Update software)
    2. Perform windows update (Start | All programs | Windows update)
    3. Obtain the latest release of iTunes software. Run iTunes. From the iTunes menu select About | Check for updates. I am running version 9.1.1.12.
    4. Check that you can view movie trailers from Apple TV. If you can't then you the apple TV has not connected to the BT home hub wireless network. You need to enter the BT home hub wireless key (which is found on the back of the bt home hub) as you password when you connect your apple TV to the wireless network. Check again that you can view Movie trailers. Don't proceed until you can.
    5. Enter the BT home hub manager (Start | All Programs | BT Home Hub | Hub manager). Select Advanced. Enter admin as the username and your password to your hub. This is either a password you entered when you first set up the hub or the S/N number printed on the back of the BT Home Hub. Click continue to advanced. Select Application sharing. Select Create a new game or application.
Enter MyAppleTV against Name. Select Manual Entry of Port Maps.
Enter this Information one line at a time:
Protocol | Port range | Translate To ... | Trigger Protocol | Trigger Port
    TCP | 123 | TCP | TCP | 1
    TCP | 3689 | TCP | TCP | 1
    UDP | 5353 | UDP | UDP | 1
    TCP | 80 | TCP | TCP | 1
    TCP | 443 | TCP | TCP | 1
    TCP | 53 | TCP | TCP | 1
    6. In BT home hub manager navigate to the devices menu, just above application sharing. And select MyAppleTV from the drop down menu and assign it.
    7. Turn the power off on the Apple TV, BT home hub, and PC. You must turn the BT home hub off.
    8. Turn on Home hub, PC. Wait for your network to return. When it has turn on apple TV.
    9. Open up iTunes. In the menu select Edit | Preferences | Apple TV. Check that Check for Apple TVs is selected.
    10. In iTunes under Library and Store, Devices should appear and within Devices Apple TV should appear.
    11. If this does not work then phone Apple support and do not let them fob you off by offering you a replacement Apple TV.

  • Apple TV Home Sharing dropping out

Does anybody know, who speaks English not silico valley cyberspace talk, how to fix it. When I start to watch a movie after 3  mins the movie stops and I am asked to jojn home sharing, as it is already on I have to reboot. the smae thing happens in another 3 mins.

My host Mac is in the room directly above my Apple TV. I tried most everything and still could not keep a solid connection. I was just getting ready to run a hard line ethernet cable through the wall from the host Mac to the Apple TV when a friend suggested I try a powerline device.  I bought THIS ONE and it works perfectly!
You get two devices in the box.  You plug one into a wall outlet near your host computer then run an ethernet cable from it to you computer.  Plug the second one into a wall outlet near your Apple TV and run an ethernet cable from it to the Apple TV. Once both are pluggin in and wired, you have to press a button on both devices to link them.  The whole thing took about 10 minutes get running.  Apple TV finallly works without drops and I diddn't have to run wire through the wall!
    Two things though:
    1) The devices must be plugged into a wall outlet. The insructions say they will not work from a power strip.
    2) I found that the "Remote" app on my IPhone will not work since the system is now hardwired.

  • Apple TV2 Home Sharing Drop Out after 25mins of playback

    iTunes: 10.5
    Mac 10.6.8
    Apple TV2 - 4.4.2
    Home Sharing a Libary
    Everything wired ethernet
After I watch a movie - let's say Dark Knight from the shared itunes Libary using Home Sharing at about 25 minutes the movie will stop and the Apple TV goes back to the main menu screen. I can then browse to the shared library under computers and start watching it again. After about 25 minutes or so it will do the drop back to the menus.
What gives? Until the 4.4.2 update I could watch anything for hours. It is also dropping back to the main menus when playing songs after 3-4 songs.
I've restarted all the network and t

I too upgraded to all the latest software (iTunes 10.2.1, iOS 4.2 on my Apple TV2) and am now experiencing drop-outs on home sharing every 10 minutes or so.
I can force Apple TV to re-recognise iTunes by quitting iTunes and then reloading. I have however noticed that my iTunes library will intermittently return to the Apple TV "Computers" menu.
Unlike others who have fixed the problem by merely disconnecting a wired ethernet link, I am running over wireless ('N' exclusively - is this anything to do with the problem??) This problem is quite irritating since my Apple TV/iTunes worked pretty well before the recent upgrades ...

  • Re: Home Sharing drop out with Apple TV2

I, too, am having a similar problem, but it seems to be slightly different from what most people here are experiencing. When I go to watch purchased content, my computer shows up but my it registers nothing in my library. Then, on my mac, I turn +Home Sharing+ off and then on again and everything shows up again for a while. However about five to ten minutes into watching the show, it stops and everything seems to have disappeared from the library again. Stop+start +Home Sharing+ again and it comes back.
    Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
I'm running iTunes 10.2.1, OS X 10.6.7 and the latest iOS on the ATV. My wireless network (which everything is on) is managed by an Airport Extreme.

Had the same issue this AM trying to stream tunes from iMac to TV2... dropped the connection about 3 songs in and kept skipping to the next song, would play it for about 45 seconds then skip to the next song. Very weird, but in searching the forum, I found a guy that said if you turn off the screen saver (set it to NEVER) and the sleep option (again, set it to NEVER) then all should be fine. So far so good... playing thru and has been for the past hour. Until an update comes out, this is the best fix for me...

  • Why does home sharing drop from ATV after short time?

I've been having the same trouble with my ATV and itunes homesharing. The connection fails after a short time and I have to restart the homesharing in itunes to get it to work again.

Thanks for the many many replies, Apple User Community. Apple seems to have removed this requirement with the latest software update (7.0.1) for the Apple TV .

  • Apple TV v2 culprit in dropping Home Sharing

I have had similar probles as others in the community: I have a MediaServer (Mac Mini connected to a DROBOServer (hosting a 1.68TB iTunes folder) connected wirelessly to a TimeCapsule (1TB) Base Station). It streams to my Apple TV in our bedroom (@ 25ft away) The Wireless Connection is NEVER dropped but Home Sharing drops from the MediaServer all the time. For the longest, I thought the problem was with my MediaServer & iTunes (based upon other User input in these forums).
Last night, while watching a movie, I was having a horrible time - movie would play for 10 min or so then Home Sharing would seemingly drop (the ATV would display the error message that I needed to connect to MediaServer and enable Home Sharing). Well, after about 3 times of getting up and fiddeling with restarting iTunes and enabeling/disabeling Home Sharing I had had enough!
On the 4th drop, out of frustration, I rebooted the Apple TV (either via the menu or by holding the Menu+Play/Pause keys - I used the remote method). POOF! Home sharing was restored in every case (the ATV lost Home Sharing 2 more times after I discovered this 'work around'
This should have a HUGE implication for Apple: Something is either electronalially defective with the ATV OR there is a bug in their software coding. I do not care which I just wish Apple would fix this - it is SO un-Apple like (My wife joked last night "so, this is what it is like to use a Windows Machine?" - referencing the BSOD)
Please Apple, get on a fix ASAP!

I have an appletv version 2 upgraded to 5.0 and a appletv version 3 with 5.1 using Windows7
I find I am having problems with Homeshare and having to come out of, and go back into Homeshare within Itunes to be able to Homeshare for sometimes 5 minutes and sometimes 45 minutes.
I have a friend who has appletv version 2 using 4.4.4 and he can Homeshare on this with no problem.
We have different internet providers and we wondered whether this was the problem, but after setting up around his house I had the same problem and he had none.
So it appears that the problem is with appletv with versions higher than 4.4.4.
Could people having this problem please state what there appletv is running on?
I feel that when Apple upgraded to 5 and above we started having trouble sharing.  This could also be working in conjuction with the latest upgrade of Itunes

  • Home Sharing Videos Mark As Watched

Greetings! I recently purchased an iPhone 4S and an enjoying the Home Sharing features, but I have noticed some issues noted in other discussions, namely the dropped connection with the AppleTV 2.  I have also noticed issue with the Home Sharing dropping on my 4S, especially in the middle of the night as I play music through my Home Share on my iDevice.
I wanted to direct this discussion to something I think is related but admittedly may just be more of an annoyance to me.  I can bring up my Movies and TV Shows on my 4S through Home Sharing just fine, and can watch both without issue.  I have noticed that if I start watching a show over my ATV2 and stop it halfway, I can later find it marked as such on my 4S with the blue half moon dot.  However, if I complete the program on my 4S, the dot for the show or movie doesn't clear like it does in iTunes, but rather resets as if I've never watched it.  I've tinkered with the iTunes settings, using other discussions as guides; I can get the play counts to register when I play something over my 4S, but can't get the dot to clear to Mark As Watched.
Again, this may just be an annoyance limited to me, and I admit I'm rather meticulous about how I maintain my iTunes library.  I like to see shows and movies I've watched marked as such.  I'm also looking at purchasing an iPad in the near future; curious if any iPad users notice the same issue.  I suspect it may be related (in a minor way) to the other Home Sharing issues that have arisen from the latest updates.  Any help would be appreciated!

  • Need to restart my system to get Home sharing from Windows working

On the second start-up of iTunes on Windows, it cannot see my two AirPlay devices on my network and other devices on the network cannot see the shared library. All of this works the first time I start Windows after system start-up. If I reboot the machine, things start working again.
This is very inconvenient. Has anyone else experienced the same problems? and found a solution?
Windows 7 64-bit with iTunes 10.5 64-bit. AirPort Time Capsule router. All devices are connected with Ethernet. ESET Antivirus and Windows firewall. I have tried temporarily disable both security products to troubleshoot the problem. No difference with the product disabled.

Hi, all - I will post this in both my discussions... I HAVE SOLVED MY ISSUE with Home Sharing dropping!!! I hope this helps someone else!
I said earlier i had two machines both Win7x64, both running iTunes x64 - only one worked without dropping the home sharing connection. I sat down and compared entries in both firewalls for both machines. It appears there were duplicate entries for Bonjour in the PC that WAS NOT working. Once I changed the firewall to match that of the other - IT WORKS.
Here are brief steps and my settings that are working for Win7x64. (I expect this could be a similar issue in Win7x86(32bit) and MacOS).
    Click Start
In "Run" type: (no quotes) Firewall
    Select Advanced Firewall
    Select "Inbound Rules"
Select "Sort by Group" so there is no grouping (this will bring Bonjour and iTunes entry to the top, most likely
Match my settings which Ive included below so there are only 4 Bonjour entries and 1 iTunes.
Delete any duplicates for Bonjour (I had 4 set to Public and two set to Private) They should all be on your private network -
There should be only one each of a TCP and UDP entry for C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe
    AND
Only one each of a TCP and UDP entry for C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe

  • Home sharing crashes.

I have had an issue with Home Sharing dropping out while playing music. This only started with the last iTunes update 10.6 (40) 64bit. Before that I was able to play music all day with no drops. The one thing I noticed, the song tries to load and you will see the song replay loop icon suddenly display dots, instead of the normal loop icon. The iTunes program then crashes.
Note: I do not have the replay loop selected (blue) to play back. I do have the play random selected (blue).
Also note, the crashes do not happen at the same point, or number of songs. When it crashes I can restart and play the song that had crashed with no problems.
I have this issue on both my iPhone 4s, iPad 2. Both are running the latest iTunes software as well as my MacBook Pro.

Check if you have firewalls disabled on your PC.
