Home Sharing Enabled Playlist No Content

I recently had a problem with Home Sharing not working at all for my remote devices with the exception of my Apple TV.  I got by that by launching iTunes as administrator.  Here is my setup and my problem:
Windows 8.1 64-bit
iTunes for Windows 12.1.0.71
Home Sharing enabled
Edit > Preferences > Sharing - Share my entire library is selected
Apple TV 3 - No problems accessing content
iPad - No problems accessing content
iPhone - When I launch the Music app., I can click on More.  I select Playlist > My Shared Library.  It looks to load very quickly, which I feel is odd because my library is large.  I goto Playlist and it says No Content.
Wife's iPad -  Same behavior as the iPhone
Everything is on the same wireless network and home sharing is using the same apple ID.

Good day Derek,
If you are having an issue with Home Sharing not funtioning as expected, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

Help... Have ate in living room & bedroom & I could works fine on iPhone4 as well as ipad2 wifi. I have home sharing enabled on all but when I rented a movie it was all good & charged but the download took over 24 hours & only in the bedroom.... Please help

The remote app can either automatically find libraries available on a network (with home sharing available) or if you haven't got home sharing enabled, you can manually pair an itunes library with the remote app (using a number that is generated by the app and then typed into the itunes library).
That is why I am so confused, as it seems to be the home sharing that is the problem!

  • I have home sharing enabled but still can't get my library to show up on my newly authorized computer, I have a lot of songs imported from CD's, never had to use itunes match or before, please help if you can

I cannot get my library to show up on my newly authorized computer, please help if you can.
I have home sharing enable on old computer and new one.
If I try to sync --I  get the message that ipod can be synced w only one computer and if I sync with this library (which only shows new purchases from itunes)   it will replace everything that is currently on ipod

Why can't the songs be transferred to the device?  Is it because they are not authorized?  Were these 25 tracks purchased/downloaded with the same account you have used to authorize the PC/new iTunes library?
Have you seen this article yet?

Have done both suggestions, still not working. Could it have somehting to do with my local network? I am using a wireless Internet provided by my apartment building so not sure if apple tv and my computer are not technically on the same "local network?"
apple tv and main computer are connecting to Internet fine. Just cannot see my itunes on apple tv.
any other advice? My itunes is turned on to home sharing. i entered the same apple itunes account into aple tv. but appletv keeps saying my computer's home sharing is not turned on...but it is.

  • I have itunes folder on Sony Vaio that has died. It has home sharing enabled.I need to transfer the library onto this new computer.I have i cloud but want the muin folder transferred to this computer. I have part of my i tunes folder on 2 back up drives.

I have itunes folder on Sony Vaio that is seriously unwell. I can start up in safe mode but that's all.  It has home sharing enabled.I need to transfer the library onto this new computer before it completely gives up the ghost.I have i cloud but want the main folder transferred to this computer. I have part of my i tunes folder on 2 back up drives.
    Can anyone help please

If the computer only starts in safte mode, it is highly unlikely that network functionality works.
Copy or move the ENTIRE iTunes folder (and any other personal data you want) to an external drive.

  • Suggestion: Home Sharing and Playlists - Import the playlist, too!

I recently installed iTunes 9 on my MacBook Pro and my Windows XP PC, which acts as my main "library" for iTunes since it has more drive space. Since 10.6 freed up a few gigs on my MBP, I figured I would copy over some music onto it.
I set up the Home Sharing feature, and it works well - I was able to copy music without a problem. Thank you!
Something I did note, though - when I clicked on a Playlist on the remote library, and imported the music, it imported the individual tracks, but not the list itself. I needed to go to the remote computer, export the playlist, and import it manually into the laptop if I wanted to keep the same playlist on both computers.
Would it be possible to add an option / feature to bring the playlist itself (rather than just the music in the list) over using Home Sharing?
    Thank you!

" ... Would it be possible to add an option / feature to bring the playlist itself (rather than just the music in the list) over using Home Sharing? ... "
I don't know if telling Apple this would help. It such a common sense thing that's missing from iTunes. I mean, c'mon... who ISN'T annoyed that when you share your playlists in iTunes they all dissappear into one long list on the other computer all muddled together instead of being listed to the left as a list... you know, playLISTs???????
Probably one of the biggest annoyances I have with iTunes bar none. I thought for sure they'd finally fixed this GLARING ommision when 9 came out with home sharing... but it STILL puts all your separate playlists all muddled together in one big list on the other computers you share them to.
    LAME, Apple... LAME.

  • Home sharing enabled, not showing up in itunes menu

I have two pcs and I have enabled home sharing for both and made sure I am signed in under the same apple id for both, but "Sharing
" does not show up in the menu on the left side of my itunes.  What am I doing wrong?

I found that switching homesharing off and then turning it back on for me cleared the issue.

  • Why can't my apple tv 2 see my macbook itunes libraries with home sharing enabled on both devices?  Same Apple id.

I cannot see my macbook pro snow leopard 10.6.8 itunes libraries on my apple tv 2.  i have disabled and re-enabled home sharing on both devices using the same Apple ID.  I used to be able to see it but not anymore.  There has been a router upgrade to Linksys E2000 but i haven't been able to find anything that would inhibit home sharing.

Switched back to the old D-Link and all is available.  Looking for solutions from Linksys.

  • Home sharing suddenly stopped working. All devices have home sharing enabled, all devices are using the same network but cant see each other

I've gone through all the Googling and support forums I can handle.. They all tell me to the same things. I have done everything required and quite honestly Home Sharing was working for quite some time. So I don't think I changed anything.
The only culprit I can think of is the wireless network. We had to call Comcast and reset our service, and they gave us a new modem. Our router is also new.
Is there a setting in a router that lets multiple devices connect but blocks each of them to each other? That seems to be what's happening.
Apple TV2 can see our connection no problem and can download trailers (downloading movies never works though!!!), we have two Macs and two iPhones and all are on our wireless and none can connect to one another using Home Sharing.
Please help!! This is an odd one!!

I believe this is true. Alas, I wrote this a while ago and the link is dead. I can't totally remember what the issue was.
But, looking through the PDF for the Linksys e2000, searching for 'filter multicast' I see this:
Filter Multicast The multicasting feature allows for multiple transmissions to specific recipients at the same time . If multicasting is permitted, then the Router will allow IP multicast packets to be forwarded to the appropriate computers . Select this option to enable the filter . This option is disabled by default.
And in my settings it's been enabled. So maybe try that.
Filter multicast is under Securtiy>Firewall after you log in as admin.
Why it's disabled by default I do not know.
Good luck! Hope this is the solution!! Apple should warn people of this feature conflict to Apple TV buyers.

  • Our family has multiple apple ids and we are setting up a new apple tv. Does it matter which apple id we use if we have home sharing enabled?

I have an apple id from my mobile me account; I also have the apple id from my itunes account (with which I purchase content for my powerbook); and my husband has an apple id for itunes which he purchases content for his itunes library on his PC.
Does it matter which apple id we use to set up our new apple tv?
what issues are caused by my multiple apple ids?

You cannot merge apple ids, but you can sign out of the apple id and sign in under the other one either on your phone or your mac. On your phone, go to settings, itunes and appstore, tap your apple id, tap sign out, then go back to home screen, then back into itunes an appstore and sign in with the apple id you want to use.

  • Hi, is it possilbe to have home sharing enabled without loading itunes?

Hi, I quite like the homesharing, but is it possilbe for me to home share my music without loading itunes. As I use winamp for playing my music on my desktop computer and don't really like itunes loaded as well, i.e. is there a mini version of itunes I can use that doesn't appear in the task bar? I'd like a service to run at my computer start up that just runs for homesharing also as I find itunes clunky to use (sorry macheads). I hope this question makes sense.

There is some logic to what you say but it looks unlikely Apple will do this. The nearest you can get to what you want is to run 'Firefly' in the background.
Active support for Firefly has long been discontinued. The same software however is still being used on various NAS boxes and has been tweaked on those to still work. You can try downloading a copy for Windows from here http://soundbridge.roku.com/support/dwnld_firefly.php
The version available at the above location may or may not work with iTunes clients still, it however will definitately not work with iOS or Apple TV devices.
There is a successor called forked-daapd but this is only available for Linux, it does however work with iOS and Apple TV devices.

  • Playlists not working in Home Sharing

My setup:  iTunes 11 on Windows 7 PC, Home Sharing enabled, Apple TV 2 with latest firmware, Remote app on iPad 3
Initially I couldn't get Home Sharing to work at all, then discovered it was an issue with my Verizon FIOS Actiontec M1424WR router.  Solved that problem by going into Advanced settings for the router and disabling the IGMP Proxy.
Now when I start the Remote app on my iPad I can get to my library, but I'm having problems with playlists and podcasts:
    1.  The playlists won't play at all.  I can play individual podcasts but not playlists.  Anyone know how to get playlists working?
    2.  Within playlists the podcast order is changed.  Anyone know how to get Home Sharing to stop changing the podcast order?
    3.  Home Sharing is also changing the order of podcasts within the podcast itself - for example if I have NPR All Things Considered as a podcast, it changes the order of the individual stories.  This is very annoying - anyone know how to make it stop doing this?
    Any help is appreciated.

OK still having the same problem but now I'm using a workaround.  From iTunes on my PC, I select Apple TV from the speaker list, (via the icon that has a triangle within a rectangle) then start the playlist from there.  The podcasts start playing and can then be controlled, e.g. paused, from the Remote app on my iPad.  Also on the iPad in the list view up at the top it shows the upcoming podcasts and they are in the right order.  It would be nice if Apple fixed this so that the podcast playlist could be started from the iPad instead of having to start it from the PC.

  • Home Sharing no longer works between iTunes and Apple TV.

I've been through all the forums, tried all the solutions provided and I have come to the conclusion that Home Sharing just no longer works between iTunes on a PC and my Apple TV.  Does anyone know if this issue will be addressed or should I list my Apple TV up on eBay?  (along with my iPad, iPod, and iPhone, since all system no longer sync together as before.)
    My issue:
My iTunes library is no longer listed under "Computers" on the Apple TV.
The airplay icon no longer shows up in iTunes. (Version 11)
I cannot play music/content from my iPhone or iPad via remote that is stored in my iTunes library through my Apple TV.
I can however play music/content that is stored locally on my iPhone and iPad through my Apple TV.
My firewall settings are allowing access to Apple TV.
After logging into my router, I see no issues there.
I've logged in/out, turned home sharing on/off, de-authorized/authorized, and restarted my PC, Apple TV, and Router.
All devices are logged into the same iTunes account, and are on the same wireless network.
    Time for a solution Apple.

If you turn off wifi on your  Computer and connect it to the apple tv using an ethernet cable can you see your library under computers in Apple TV.
If yes the issue is with your wifi not the Apple TV

    iTunes Home Sharing Not Working
Not working and sometimes when it is working, it cuts out in the middle, or when you click on the computer name, the focus goes away from the library.  In other words, really weird.
    What it is
iTunes has a feature called "Home Sharing" - it basically allows you to share your entire or part of your library with other instances of iTunes in your home network.  It requires you to login to your iTunes account on both computers.  A typical scenario is to enable Home Sharing on your desktop machine and then access the library from your iPad, Apple TV, iPhone, Mac, etc.
In my case, I have iTunes on my desktop machine running Windows XP in the attic with Home Sharing enabled and then I access the library from my Macbook and Apple TV, depending on what I want.  How to use Home Sharing can be found here.
    Symptoms
Home Sharing machine not showing up in Apple TV or the Macbook
The Macbook home sharing not showing up on my desktop
    Home Sharing working intermittently
    Connections getting cut of intermittently
Usually, restarting iTunes or the desktop computer will make things work.
Sometimes, restarting the Macbook or the Apple TV will make things work.
    The "working" doesn't last long
The FixOn the desktop computer where the Home Sharing is enabled, I disabled the "QoS Packet Scheduler" from the network connection:
    Open Control Panel
    Open Network Connections
Right-Click on your connection (in my case, it was "Wireless Network Connection 4"
    Select Properties
    Uncheck "QoS Packet Scheduler"
    Click OK
    Restart iTunes if necessary
After doing the above, Home Sharing worked like a charm.

  • Legality questions about Home Sharing

I have some legality questions about Apple's Home Sharing technology.
As I understand it, you can share (that is, copy it from one computer to another) your music, movies, applications and other iTunes-managed files amongst five computers. The only 'trick' is that each computer must have an iTunes Store account and must be logged in in order for it to work.
My question concerns the copying aspect and the legality of it. For content that was purchased through the iTunes Store I can see how Home Sharing can provide a limitation on content sharing, since all of the machines would need to be connected to Apple's servers in order for the validation process to happen. But what about content that was added to iTunes through other means, e.g., ripping my own CDs or converting my DVDs? These items can still be copied via Home Sharing and as there's no DRM on them there's no way they can be protected against "illegal" or "unauthorized" use.
It was my understanding that if I gave a copy of a song to someone else, that's illegal. Apple's Home Sharing technology seems to facilitate this action. If I rip a CD or DVD into iTunes and someone copies it out, isn't that making an illegal copy? Can I be held liable for distribution of content?
And how far does this extend? If I live in a house with four unrelated people, are they legally (?) allowed to copy music and media amongst each another? Is there a perceived or actual difference between using Home Sharing to copy a movie versus, say, using a USB flash drive? And what if one of them moves out? Am I legally obligated to go through that person's hard drive and remove content that they copied from me before they leave the building?
Does Home Sharing somehow retroactively change the copyright application on a given CD or DVD? Most of my CDs and DVDs contain notices and warnings against distributing copies. Can these warnings now be ignored, or at least amended with "...unless you're using iTunes Home Sharing" at the ends of them?
I am not trying to stir up a hornet's nest here. I'm only trying to better understand the legal issues surrounding Home Sharing and particularly how they relate to unprotected content. It seems very contradictory that the RIAA and MPAA would be fighting so hard against peer-to-peer services like BitTorrent and Gnutella while apparently allowing peer-to-peer services through iTunes Home Sharing.
Furthermore, I also understand that the intention of this system was to allow families who are living together to have common access to all of the "household" music, but my issues aren't about this. I envision, for example, a college dorm building where there's several hundred people living together on the same network subnet, and all of them have Home Sharing enabled and everyone is copying thousands and thousands of songs to/from one another. Is this now legal?
Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks.

If I rip a CD or DVD into iTunes and someone copies it out, isn't that making an illegal copy?
RIPping of commercial, encrypted DVDs (most of them) is illegal to begin with. Or rather, breaking the encryption on a DVD is illegal and in order to RIP the DVD, you must break the encryption. SO you have already "broken the law" by having a copy on your computer.
Most of my CDs and DVDs contain notices and warnings against distributing copies.
Most of your DVDs have a notice about even simply making a copy, not only distributing copies.
Much of your post has been cussed and discussed by many, many people (lawyers, corporations, organizations, individuals, etc.) and no one has come (or likely ever will come) to a complete agreement.
Generally, "sharing" in the same house hold amongst family members seems to be okay. Outside the same household/family is almost always not okay.
I envision, for example, a college dorm building where there's several hundred people living together on the same network subnet, and all of them have Home Sharing enabled and everyone is copying thousands and thousands of songs to/from one another. Is this now legal?
    No.
This is exactly what Napster was and why they were sued & shut down.
I imagine Apple lawyers have done their homework as well as consulted with the labels to discuss these exact issues.
And it's called "Home Sharing" to indicate that it is not "Dorm Sharing" or "Workplace Sharing", or even simply "Library Sharing"etc. even though it may be possible to use it in other places than the Home.
Users on other computers need to know your iTunes ID and password to enable it Home Sharing. Likely this is how Apple got the lables to be okay with it.
Are you gonna give (and get) dozens/hundreds/thousands/any other users your iTunesID & password?
