Home sharing EXTREMELY slow!

I just bought my first Mac computsr ever on Friday, a Mac Mini, and I love it.  I put some episodes of The Sopranos on it and wanted to setup "Home Sharing" so I can watch them from my iPad.  I set it up well, I think, and when I find the video on my iPad it wont play.  It just says "loading" and that wheel churns and churns.  It's taking forever.  Not sure if I did something wrong or what, but any help provided will be appreciated.
I updated all software so EVERYTHING is current.  I have RoadRunner Internet (which shouldn't matter) and a new Netgear router.  All my equipment is relatively new.  Not sure what the problem is.

  • Home sharing is slow

    Scenario:
    1. Apple TV 2.
    2. Apple TV 2 hard wired with Ethernet.
    2. External USB hard drive plugged directly into router with videos that have been imported to Itunes library.
    3. Home sharing enabled in Itunes on a laptop computer
    4. Videos in External USB show up just fine in Apple TV 2 menu
    5.  PROBLEM:  Videos from USB device load extremely SLOWLY via Home Sharing in Apple TV 2.
    6.  SOLUTION:  PLEASE HELP with solution!!!!!

Thanks both of you for the tips.  However, doesn't seem to be it.  I have a Belkin Router and also a range extender.  I have 2 iPhones, an iPad, and iMac throughout the house and all work just find.  Get this...even when I have my iPad and iPhone next to the Apple TV I can get the videos to play on those devices just fine so it can't be the range or interference.  I've also tried both the 2.4 and 5ghz bands.  In addition, I can play Netflix, Apple Purchased Movies, Trailers, etc.. just fine on the Apple TV so the signal is ok.
I might for the heck of it move the Apple TV as you suggest which would only confirm one thing....that the Apple TV wifi reception is not the same as the iPad and iPhone (as I mentioned above those work at the same exact location).
I'll keep trouble shooting and also look through the URL provided so thanks.
If you have any other suggestions or thoughts please let me know.

  • Home Sharing - bad & slow interface

I was looking forward to the home sharing functionality in 4.3, but I think it is a big disappointment. The interface on the iPad is very slow, mainly because it takes ages to get the artwork (and there doesn't seem to be any caching, like on the Apple TV). Also the TV shows seem randomly ordered.
Apparantly it is not just me (http://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/g3j8e/theshared_videos_interface_in_ios_43_forthe/), but I'm still wondering if some issues can be solved, like the TV show order?

    Mr Al 2009 (and OP)
I was having the same issue, when I clicked on "shared" on my iPad, it would take forever to load (if it did). The fix for me was to go into iTunes preferences on my Mac and under the "Sharing" tab uncheck "Share my library on my local network". This was the "old" way of sharing music, this is unneccesary if you are using Home Sharing. But might be still necessary if you want to share you music around a company or school perhaps.
Once I wasn't sharing my media "two ways", videos loaded in about 30 seconds.
Hopefully this will work for you and everyone else as well.

  • Video sharing extremely slow over network

Hi Everyone, I've had a quick search through the forums to try and see if anyone has been having the same problems with me when trying to share videos (music videos, tv shows, movies etc) over a network. In itunes 7.5 I used to have no problems sharing my music or videos, now it seems like the videos are extremely slow to stream or simply won't stream at all The library shows up and music streams perfectly, but videos just seem to take forever to load, if they even load at all! As you can imagine this is a little annoying, especially if I want to sit in my theatre room with my mac mini and watch a movie streamed from my macbook pro. I've tried changing the network on my mac mini from its usual cabled network connection to using the airport, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
Has anyone else suffered with similar issues, and if so, is there any way to resolve them?
    Thanks in advance,
    Best Regards,
    Oliver

You already made that point. The issue is that is not helpful if you want to use Front Row and/or a Mac as a media centre. Your workaround is fine but it is klunky. The one suggested of downgrading to QT 7.3.1 is elegant but very slow as unless you can get Pacifist to work (which I could not) it means an archive and reinstall of Leopard, and downloading all the patches again with the crucial exception of QuickTime. The good news is that Leopard does this much, much better than any previous Mac OS X and all your settings and even third party preferences should work fine. The 7.3.1 installer is still available online of you Google "QuickTime 7.3.1 Leopard". This will work perfectly unless you are renting movies.
So, the choice is klunky, or an hour or so of re-installing.

  • Home Sharing iTunes to Apple TV, Songs Buffer Slowly

    Hello,
I need help I'm stuck in a dead end right now. Whenever I try to play music from my iTunes to my Apple TV (I believe it's the newest one in a small black box) through Home Sharing, the songs tend to buffer for a pretty long time. Even when I play an album, getting the next song to play takes a while to buffer. I know for a fact that it's not my wi-fi signal strength, my internet speed, and connecting the Apple TV through an ethernet cable makes no difference at all. I've also went into my router and changed some configerations as well by turning off firewall and adding Home Sharing as a virtual server, so it will bypass any interference. I'm using a Belkin N600 router by the way.
Also, what I found interesting is that, when I configure my router, enabling IPv6 seems to make playing songs from my iTunes to my Apple TV through Home Sharing extremely fluid and seemless. Yet, the downside seems to be whenever I want to play a song from my iPhone through airplay, the song will be come extremely choppy. When I disable IPv6, playing songs from my iPhone become seemless, yet Home Sharing seems to take forever to buffer the song.
Anyone have any ideas, or have similiar problems?

    Update: I found the problem.
All I had to do is go in my router and put these ports and TCP/UDP into the virtual server list on my Belkin router:
-TCP port 123 is used to communicate with a network time server.
-TCP port 3689 is used to communicate with iTunes while using the iTunes Library Sharing feature.
-UDP port 5353 is used by Apple TV for automatically finding computers with iTunes on your network using Bonjour.
I believe that many people experiencing home sharing problems is due to their router. Especially Belkin routers. It seems to cause conflict with many Apple TV users who want to use Home Sharing when restarting the computer and Apple TV doesn't suffice. The way that the router talks to the computer and talks to Apple TV, the router can't seem to bridge the connects together. For me at least, by opening these ports in my router, everything seems to run fluid and no more laggy, glitchy, or dropped songs playing via home sharing.
    Also: turn off IPV6

  • OS X 10.8.3 leads to VERY slow home sharing for Apple TV

Everything was fine, but as soon as I upgraded to OS X 10.8.3 Home Sharing on my Apple TV became unusably slow.
Internet is fine (I have a very speedy 40Mbps connection) on both my Mac Pro and my Apple TV (for example movie trailers streamed over the internet work fine). The issue is the Home Sharing connection between my Mac Pro and my Apple TV.
    Some Tech Specs:
    Mac Pro (Mid 2010)
    24GB Ram
    OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)
    Connected via Ethernet
Apple TV 3rd Generation (three weeks old!)
    OS "up to date"
    Connected via Ethernet
    Virgin Media Super Hub
    Cable Modem
Connected to Mac Pro and Apple TV via Ethernet
Problem: viewing movies streaming from the Mac Pro, which until I updated to 10.8.3 worked flawlessly, now stream SO slowly, that the Apple TV is now useless for this purpose.
    - Tried using Wi-Fi on the Apple TV. Same issue.
    - Tried turning off Firewall on router. Same issue.
    - Tried using Pro gigabit switch between Apple TV and Mac Pro to see if Cable Modem was at fault. Same issue.
    - Restarted the Apple TV countless times, resetting the network settings on the Mac Pro, renewing the DHCP leases on Mac Pro and  Apple TV. Same issue.
Curiously, I tried using Nullriver's MediaLink UPnP server to try and stream content from my Mac Pro to my PS3 so I could try and watch content that way. However, the content seemed to suffer from the same extremely slow download... Clearly something has changed with the network settings and it's made my Apple TV a useless lump of black plastic as I bought it for the sole purpose of streaming content from my Mac Pro to the TV downstairs.
Anyone else have this problem? Any comments or solutions would be welcome.
    J

I just updated to 10.8.3 today, and my computer and Apple TV won't even recognize each other now.  I have absolutely no advice, but wanted to throw this in so you (and Apple) know you're not the only one.

  • Can i have two internet connections connected to two airport extremes separately without disturbing the home sharing option.

can i have two internet connections connected to two airport extremes separately without disturbing the home sharing option. i want to have both the airport extremes to use a single imac for streaming music or video to my apple tv's at different places where one apple tv is in the range of one airport extreme.it's not a problem if both airport extremes have different wifi id's with separate internet. The imac which i use for streaming the music and videos is only in the range of only one airport extreme.is it possible if i can stream music or videos to my apple tv which is not in the range of same airport extreme which i use for imac but in the range of other airport extreme.
Finally what i need is i want to use two internet networks as my highest possible internet bandwidth is about 1mbps.and i know that i cant mix both the networks and make it as 2mbps.

Yes, that is possible. Please check out the following Apple Support article for details on how.

  • Illustrator 15.0.2 extremely slow on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Illustrator has been working nicely on my computer up until the 15.0.2 upgrade.  Now it chugs along at a snails pace and locks up/hangs frequently when switch between tools or windows.
    My system specs are:
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Intel i7 Q720 processor
    6GB RAM
    1GB ATI video card
Is anybody else experiencing extremely slow performance with the 15.0.2 upgrade?

I am having a suspisciously similar issue and I would like to elaborate a bit..
I too have this odd issue where Illustrator works ok (though screen redraw lags) but as soon as I go between programs, whether Notepad, Acrobat or similar simple programs - Illustrator freezes for 5-10 seconds. I go back and forth a lot - looking through documents (pdfs etc.) when I draw so the annoyance is simply unbearable.
I have used Illustrator for ages and roughly 6 months ago I bought a new PC to use at home. Its specs are:
OS: Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
    PROC: Intel i7 930
    RAM: 12 GB OCZ PLATINUM
    GFX: ATI RADEON HD  5870
    MOBO: P6X58D
These specs thrashes my specs at work by far and yet Illustrator BOTH CS4 and CS5 runs smooth and hazle free at the old worn out computer at work, while being close to useless at home. I have googled my eyes out and found no solution. Tried clearing the prefs, etc. - which made no difference. Disabled Aero and all other gfx consuming stuff - with absolutelu no improvement. I have even tried flagging Illustrator CS5 as Large Adress Aware... didn't help
I can run all other Adobe CS4 and CS5 (master edition) very good!
Can someone help - I am desperat

  • TS2972 Slow streaming home sharing

In my configuration, I purchase and download TV shows on to my Mac mini. I then stream to my iPad or APple TV using Home Sharing. Everything was working fine until I upgraded OSX on the Mini. Despite all my devices being on the same network and all having HS enabled and logged in to my Apple ID, I couldn't get anything reconnected to the mini.
I was finally able reconnect following innumerable restarts and disconnecting and reconnecting Home Sharing. Works fine on the Apple TV but iPad is still impossibly slow....ANY ideas?? I had no idea Apple products could be this difficult?!!?

I figured it out...I switched to 5ghz in AirPort Utility under wireless options.  No issues now, and I'm running twice as fast as before.
Should have thought about it before I asked.

  • My new ipod is extremely slow, but i have full strength wifi. Works fast at others homes.

My new ipod touch 4g is extremly slow in my house, but i have full strength wifi. Works fast at others homes. When i try to connect to the internet it gives me a server error. All other ipods and laptops work fine in the home. Does anybody else have this issue?

Have you tried powering off and then back on your router?
    You can try:
    - Reseting the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
-Resetting network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network settings.

  • After 10.5.7 update, extremely slow home sync

After updating the server to 10.5.7, the 'full' sync at login/logout has become extremely slow. On a sub-spec Leopard machine like a 500MHz G4 it actually took 30 minutes to log in because of slow syncing. On a MacBook (Core Duo) it takes 15 minutes. It takes long checking, it is very slow syncing, and finishing takes another 4-5 minutes.
On 10.5.6 it was OK. Both clients have been updated to 10.5.7 client. Multiple login/logouts do not change anything. Logging out (15min sync) and immediately logging in results in another 15min sync.
Most of the time seems spent syncing of Library/PubSub. It may be just 1.5MB or so, but it takes ages.
I am using server side file tracking.
Anything I can try to do to make this usable again?

I first removed syncing ~/Library/PubSub but this did not help too much.
I removed the contents of ~/.FileSync from clients (2) and server. Since the clients have FileVault home dirs that requires being logged in everywhere.
The old SQLite db in ~/.FileSync directory was 16MB, the new one 1.8MB. After that, I have seem an improved responsiveness. Still not something extremely fast, but good enough.
It would be good if there was some sort of 'reclaim' functionality in the SQLite db that underlies home syncing, just like there is for FileVaulted home directories.

  • My Apple TV is slow and disconnects after the latest update (5.1). It seems to effect both home sharing and through the net. Is there a known problem?

My Apple TV is slow and disconnects after the latest update (5.1). It seems to effect both home sharing and through the net. Is there a known problem?

    Hi Scott.
There is a problem - but Apple have not acknowledged it. Many people on these forums are experiencing the same issue.
To get something done, you should report it here. The more of us that tell Apple about it, the more likely they are to fix it. You could also send a short email headed 'Apple TV update problems' to

  • AirPort Extreme home sharing

Can I use home sharing/access my library by connecting a hard drive with my music library on to my AirPort Extreme?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can use content from a network drive, but it must still be listed in your iTunes library and iTunes needs to be running on your computer.

  • Home sharing is very slow

I'm not sure when this happened and obviously I don't know why... all my devices are up to date. My homesharing from my imac to appletv is insanely slow and I can't mirror at all basically. I need help!!
i believe its a 3rd gen apple tv and a 2011version imac... trying to watch my home movies on the big screen.
    THANKS!

Well, I spent long time with Apple Phone support, they made me delete the library, move some iTunes file from Library folder on my MBP but that didn't help.
I also did reset my Apple TV, and did all the settings again. No change.
I read somewhere on this forum itself I think to remove "Share my Library on local network" option from iTunes preferences, under sharing. As per the suggestion, this is an old option, and when you have home sharing on, you don't need this to be checked. More over it causes sharing to be slow. So after I unchecked it, I ATV3 and my MBP on for about an hour, and when I came back, it was all just perfect!
