Home Sharing Folder Empty on all client PC's on Home Network

I have Home Sharing 'on' on all my local PC's (3 of them). I can see the Shared Folder on each of my PC's in iTunes, but when I click on the folder from a non-host PC, NO songs, movies or TV Shows appear! Folder and sub folders (music, movies, TV shows, etc,) are all empty.
Home Sharing DID work just fine for a year. But sometime within the past month or two - perhaps after an iTunes "update" - it no longer works. All settings checked - "shared" my Library in Preferences, turned on Home Sharing on each PC, all are on the same simple home network. And again, the Shared Folder IS visible on each PC - there is just no content in the folder! I am offically stumped. Please help.
Thanks in advance.

Hey ArnoDWG,
Thank you for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you are having issues with home sharing, and that these issues are isolated to your PC. I also want to thank you for providing information about your security software, as this may be the cause.
For more information, see the following resource:
Troubleshooting Home Sharing
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972
While the entire article provides great help, the most relevant information may be Section 5: "Check Firewall Settings":
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries.
In addition, Apple TV and Mac computers will use port 123 to set the time automatically. Incorrect date and time on either the computer or Apple TV can cause errors for Home Sharing and connections in general.
If you are unsure whether your router has a firewall or the required ports open, test additional devices or another network to help isolate the issue. If the devices tested work on another home network, it is your router or network configuration.
If you use another security/firewall software on your computer or router, follow this article or contact the manufacturer or check the documentation on how to open TCP ports 123 and 3689 as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353.
Thanks,
Matt M.

  • Home Sharing not indexing properly on client devices

Just installed updated to iTunes 11 on my WinXP box (I know, I know get with times.) I turned on Home Sharing for use with the iPads in the household. I can see(and I think play) all of the songs in my libary. The problem I am having is indexing. The iPads and iPhones only recognize about 1/50 albums and 0 artist tags for sorting purposes. The artist sort is empty. If I sort by songs and click on a song (again, all songs are there) they do in fact have album artwork, album and artist. But if I sort songs by artist, all but 1-5 sort under A (as if they had no artist tag).  If I browse the songs the computer everything is behaving properly.  All client devices appear to be getting the same index, which means problem is the host?
I am not sure whether it was working in iTunes 10 or not.
    I have done the following:
Turned Homesharing off then back on on the host
    Uninstalled/reinstalled iTunes
    Repaired Bonjour
    Deleted and re-added the library
    Reset all devices including routers.
    Any ideas?

Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.  Home Sharing is rife with problems when transferring media.

  • My Home Sharing is Empty :(

So I succesfully set-up the home sharing, but its empty how do you add music and stuff like that?

not sure what you think "turning on home sharing" does, but here's a standard reply - just pick from it what you need:
what you want to see in iTunes is this (view from my iMac's iTunes seeing the library on my Mini)
clicking on the little triangle on the left of the home sharing icon will provide a "list view"
once the homeshared library has loaded, two buttons will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes window, being settings and import.
now you should be able to import any content from any shared library by selecting (highlighting) it and clicking the import button.
via settings, you can select which newly purchased content is transferred automatically to homeshared libraries
the "Show" pop-up menu will reveal the options to display all items of the homeshared library or those "not in my library"
in order for home sharing to work:
    (a) iTunes on all machines must be authorized for the same iTunes store account (Apple ID)
    (b) all machines must be on the same network
    (c) all machines must have access to the internet.
if none of the above makes a difference, try turning home sharing off on all computers, then turning it back on.
these reads may prove helpful: one and two.

    Hi,
I tried everythink, but same as before!
    - droppings ot the main screen
    - loosing Home Share
    now even on iPads !
    Frustrating!
I'm now more than convinced that this is caused by the latest iTunes version.
As some others stated in other threads .... it seems that Apple doesn't really take care of this problem. So what if, if we could make them feeling the same pain as we do. ... Just by dropping them a mail as soon as we have the problem again. Not more often, we don't want to be unfair, but everytime it happens.
I found this feedback site http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
I will start now with this.... maybe this will help to rise a little bit of attention
    Tweety
This is the mailbody I always use
    Hello all,
Since the last update to iTunes Version 10.6.1 (7) streaming content (Movies and TV shows) to Apple TVs and iPads has two major problems:
    - Home Sharing is lost during streaming (streaming stops even if a large portion of the content is already preloaded)
    - streaming stops and the main screen pops up (Home Sharing still available)
This happens sometime after some minutes, sometimes after several hours, but it surely happens.
I followed every advice I could found on this support website. There are now a lot of threads following this issue.
Sometimes it seems getting better, but hours later the same isues occured again. Watching content on this enviroment is a real pain and very frustrating.
As many others I'm now convinced that the latest update of iTunes caused this problem.
Our family enviroment contains the following Apple products:
    - iTunes on a Win7 32 bit Noname PC (all content)
    - second iTunes on a iMac with OS 10.6.8 (all content)
    - third iTunes on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8 (daughter, only selected content)
    - fourth iTunes on a Win7 32 Samsung Notebook (son, only selected content)
    - all iTunes sharing the same Home Sharing ID
    - 2 Apple TV second generation
    - 1 Apple TV first generation
    - 2 iPod touch (bought last year)
    - 2 iPads (second generation)
all firmware or software are on latest available patchlevel.
At this moment, I can not recomend to others to buy this products.
I will drop this feedback everytime my famiily and I facing this problem... just to help you to get a better feeling of the urgency of this issue.
Thanks for every effort in advanced.

  • How do I allow users to create folders in a shared folder where we all then have read/write access to those new folders?

I have three users who need to access a particular folder on one of our other Macs. The folder resides on the desktop of that particular Mac and it is set as "shared" with all of our accounts set to access the folder. When a user creates a new subfolder in that shared folder, the permissions are instantly set to allow the creator read/write access but the other users are only allowed read-only access. Is there a way to set the permissions so that any new folder created in that shared folder automatically gives read/write access to all accounts who are authorized access to that shared folder?

You should be able to take the permissions you have set and "apply to enclosed items." I am trying to attach a picture of what this looks like so my apologies if it does not work.
Highlight your folder you want and go to File>Get Info or command+I and at the bottom where it has Sharing and Permissions, click the lock button to authenticate. Click the gear and click "apply to enclosed items". See if that works.

  • Home Library folder was moved, all settings are now gone

    Hello all-
I'm having a serious dilemma, and could really use some help. My MacBook Pro has been having some issues lately: running slowly, constantly kicking me out of Safari for no reason & all together just acting "wrong". About a month ago after reading several posts on this and other forums I decided to download OnyX to keep my system in good order. Upon first running OnyX it told me that my start-up volume needed to be repaired before it would proceed. Scared to do this for fear of screwing something up worse, I stupidly ignored it and went about my life. Then last week my favourite freeware app, xPad, all of a sudden stopped working. This reminded me about the volume issue and I checked the volume with Disk Utility and yes, there were problems. I was told to fix it by using the install discs. I had planned on doing it later that night (though I wasn't sure how) but I thought it would be beneficial to have a copy of my "Home (Shortname) folder" before doing so, in case I screwed something else up. This is where my real problems began.
I made a burn folder of my "Home folder" but realized that the "Library" folder was somehow not in the burn folder. I can't be certain what happened from here. I know I freaked out. I put the burn folder in the trash and restarted my computer. Probably a stupid thing to do, but I admittedly have never known what to do with a burn folder if you don't want it any longer. Well, upon restart it was obvious that I had mucked something up because I was shown the blue apple screen instead of my regular desktop picture, my Dock had several question marks and everything was back to the original settings instead of my brushed metal settings. Though most of my icons were still there and the applications and documents folders seemed unharmed. I began Safari and it too was all amuck. I then took the burn folder out of the trash along with anything I found in "Recovered Files" folders, of which there where several and put them on my desktop. It seems that my Home Library Folder was indeed in the trash along with my Documents, Macintosh HD, Public and several others, plus the Burn Folder with all of the aliases to those folders minus the Library folder (if that makes any sense) & they are now all on my desktop. So now after that long rambling preface, for which I apologize, my questions are as follows:
    1) If I move the Library Folder on my Desktop back to the Home(Shortname) folder will everything be all right again? i.e., applications will run correctly and find their data and life will go on as planned? Or is there something else I need to do instead?
    2) After fixing this dilemma what do I do with all of the folders that are now on my desktop? Particularly my Macintosh HD, Documents, Public and Burn Folder? It seems that trashing them was where the real problems began.
    3) Is it then safe to automatically try to do the reinstall via Disk Utility?
I suppose we should just start with getting this Library matter settled first. Any suggestions are welcomed and greatly appreciated. It seems I know just enough about my Mac to mess it up. So I will gladly take all the advice anyone can give. I thank you all in advance for your help.
    -Angela

Thanks for the quick responses you guys, sorry it took me a while to get back. I did as you suggested bdkjones and all seems to be well. Unfortunately, xPad is still not working and I had hoped that the Startup Disk Repair would solve whatever issue that was, but alas it did not. I'll write the creator of that specific program to see if he has any suggestions, unless anyone else does in the meantime. But as for my prior predicament, though I haven't checked everything folder by folder yet, things seems fine so far. I truly appreciate the help. I pretty much knew what to do but just needed the encouragement of someone saying "Do this. You're on the right path. You won't ruin everything." And don't worry I'll be taking care of any future repairs as soon as I know about them from now on. It was really quite a scare for a while there.
Once again thanks and if you or anyone have any other morsels of info you feel like throwing my way about system maintenance or anything in the Mac realm you feel I should know please feel free. The last few days have made me realize I'm at that dangerous level in computer knowledge where I seem to know just enough to muck something up but not quite how to fix it.

  • IPad Music and Videos apps - Home Sharing is empty

    Anyone else seeing this?
Cannot see anything in Videos app - Shared (No Videos You can download videos from iTunes).
Music app - More Shared - My iTunes library, Music app is blank (no music) except for top and bottom
Yes, Home Sharing is enabled on the iPad and the Mac mini.
    Restarted everything, turned off/on everything.
Worked fine previously under iOS 4.3.5. Maybe with 5.0 (don't recall specifically) and now not with 5.0.1.
It is showing the option to slect teh Shared library but no content is being passed to the iPad.

This is only viewing shared music/videos from iTunes through the Music/Video apps, not copying items to the iPad.
    David Smith_Netwanderer wrote:
I am getting this too - minus I have my music and it is just Videos which are not showing up.  They show-up in iTunes on the iPad but not when I actually open the Videos.app.  The space available also indicates that the videos are on the iPad but just are not showing up.
With Home Sharing, they should not take up any space on the iPad since they are streamed from iTunes on the computer. They are not on the iPad.
I also tried searching for the videos in spotlight and they don't show up there either.
Since they are not on the iPad, they won't (and should not) show up on the iPad.
I have a hunch that it is something to do with the 'matching' process and since it does not process the videos (as it shouldn't) it assumes there aren't any videos and stops showing them.
I don't have iTunes Match so it has nothing to do with this.

  • My Home Sharing become invisible on all gadgets

Recently, my Apple TV 3, iPhone 4 and iPad 2 do not display my Home Sharing from iMac and MacBook Pro. But on MacBook Pro is displayed HS from iMac. Help!!!

  • When accessing shared folder - 'You might not have permission to use this network resource" .. A device attached to the system is not functioning

On a Windows 2008 R2 server that had been working fine, all of a sudden some shared folders became inaccessible.  Clicking on them returned the following: "<Folder> is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network
resource.  A device attached to the system is not functioning."
If I create another share with a different name for that same folder, it works fine.  If I delete the original share then recreate it with the same name, I get the same error.  However, if I right click on the problematic share and select 'map
network drive' that works.  So this would not appear to be a permission issue.
I discovered this problem because the path for mapping the home folder as a property of their AD account stopped working.
I have tried most of the common things found on the internet.  I've tried accessing via IP, same issue.  While I only have a couple 2003 servers, those can access this resource.
At this point, I'm pretty much out of ideas.  Any help would be appreciated.  I also have some reports of potential issues with some printer mappings too which I will have to investigate in the morning.
If anyone has a solution to this I would be extremely grateful.  Thank you.

    Hi,
Can you access the shard folder locally? Is a specific server cannot access the shared folder? Please try to Boot your server in Clean Mode to check if some third-party software cause the issue.

  • The home share folder does not show up after turning on home share program?

After turning on Home Sharing in iTunes on my desktop the 'share' folder never shows up?

You need to make sure all devices are connected to the same network. If you have a guest network set up for other users, your devices need to be connected to the same network.

  • I have a similar question to the one Brendan posted a day or two ago. My wife's MacBook Pro will find my library for home sharing, but my ACER will not even display the home sharing icon. Home sharing on, latest version on iTunes.

I want to get some music from my wife's MacBook Pro via Home Sharing. We both have Home Sharing turned on. Her's displays the Home Sharing icon, and recognizes my library. My ACER will not display the Home Sharing icon, and I cannot access her library. I have verified I have the latest version of iTunes, I have turned Home Sharing off and on again, and still no icon.

  • Can't access itunes store or home sharing on apple tv, apple tv 2 keeps saying that network time needs to be set.

Cant acess itunes store or home sharing on apple tv 2, keeps telling me that network time needs to be set. When I go to time zone section on apple tv - I chose a city...but still no luck. Apparently, can't do anything without the time being set. How do I set this up?

Yes, I did (turning off and then on again is a way of life for any windows user!). Actually, through a process of trial and error I have fixed the problem although I'm not very comfortable with the fix. For some reason, the OS X firewall is to blame. By relaxing the firewall settings to their most lenient, the iTunes store is now fully accessible via iTunes, and so is the whole of the apple website. Another added side effect has been that general web browsing is now lightning fast.
I'm therefore left with the (temporary) conclusion that my iMac's internal firewall is only capable of blocking access to the web resources of the people who created it, and slowing my web browser to a crawl.
