Home Sharing: Half loading and skipping problems

Hello all
Firstly, thank you to those that are reading this with a view to helping, and to those that will, hopefully, reply.
I am looking at getting my iTunes library shared in my home. My current set up is simple: 2011 MBP, iPhones, iPad, all music on the MBP and all devices using the same iTunes account (although, there are different iCloud accounts on the devices, but I assume this is not a problem). All devices up-to-date. Approx 80GB of ripped/iTunes purchased music. The first thing I want to acheive is my iPhone having access to my music library so I can plug the phone into a dock and play what I want.
I believe I have set up Home Sharing correctly. When I use the Music app on any iOS device I can see the library on the MBP, but one of two things happens:
- Mostly, the library half loads (exactly half, it quickly gets to half and stops), or
- The library does eventually load but when i try to play a song it skips/cycles through every song without playing, until it comes to the end of the playlist/album
Both of the above seem to be reasonably common problems, with no solution.
As a troubleshoot, i set up the Remote app; this works flawlesly. I can control iTuines from an iPhone with no problems at all. "It just works." I therefore assume that I can mostly rule out router problems and me not setting things up properly.
So, the question: Is there a real solution to the above?
Many thanks

  • Home Sharing Between MAC and PC Problem

    Hello all,
I am having an issue with home sharing between my iMac and PC. Here is the setup:
IBM x61 tablet with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit- I run itunes and see the iMac's itunes library just fine and can import perfectly
iMac with Snow Leopard- iTunes can see the IBM's library but can't load the library; it gets hung up. Also, the icon next to the library from the x61 is a music symbol and not the home icon so I know something is wrong. I have tried everything in the troubleshooting section of the apple support page besides opening the ports. It seemed to have happened witht the latest iTumes update.
Should I try port forwarding? I use a d-link 815 router and have avira anti-virus. Has anyone had success with windows 7 firewall and the ports?
Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.
    Diggs

I'm not 100% sure of the terminology used by Windows or any other Windows firewall programs but in essence what you want to do is allow those port to pass through. Forwarding sounds correct to me. Do you only have one firewall active? I know Windows has its own built-in firewall and some security software also install firewalls and I know some people don't realize that they are running two and should turn one of them off. Not sure if you amy be running into that problem.
Here is a thread where someone shows what they did with their firewall settings to get things to work.

Also, I wrote this for someone else. It explains how sharing in iTunes works. Maybe it can help you to troubleshoot your problem.
Home Sharing is enabled by selecting Home Sharing from the 'Advanced' menu (see screen shot below) and entering your Apple ID and password. Home Sharing allows unrestricted access to the shared iTunes library from computers on the network as well as from iOS devices. Home Sharing is required for access by iOS devices, they do not work with Library Sharing. Home sharing also allows you to copy media from one computer to another, something you can't do with Library Sharing. Home Sharing overrides Library Sharing if both are enabled.
Library Sharing is enable by selecting 'Share my library on my local network' in iTunes Preference (see screen shot below.) Library Sharing does not work with iOS devices. Library Sharing only allows for the playback of media from shared libraries. You cannot copy media from one computer to another using Library Sharing. The 'Status:' indicator will display a count of the number of computers that are connected to your library using Library Sharing. Home Sharing connections will not be indicated here. You can also restrict who can connect to your library using a password. This password restriction has no affect on Home Sharing connections. They are authorized and controlled by the use of Apple IDs.
How to tell if you are connecting to a library shared by Home Sharing or Library Sharing (see screen shot below.) A Home Sharing library icon looks like a house with a musical note on the side. A Library Sharing icon looks like a stack of CDs with a musical note on top. They are both labeled by the name of the shared library as configured in iTunes Preferences.
I think I've covered everything and hope this helps people understand the difference between the two types of shared libraries and how to configure each.

You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before.

  • HT4527 I want to move all my iTunes from old PC to new PC but Home Sharing on both and it works.  At Step 11, I clicked Home Sharing Import button doesn't work.

Help!  I want to move all my iTunes music, podcasts, etc. from an old PC to a new PC. I set up Home Sharing on both and it works.  I followed the steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 to the letter.  At Step 11, I clicked on Home Sharing on my new PC, then Edit > Select All so I could then import everything to the new computer.  No matter what I try, the Import button doesn't work.  There are two buttons on the lower right hand side of the iTunes screen - one for Settings and one for Import.  The Settings button is clickable but the Import button isn't even live.  In other words, I can see it but not click on it.  I have double-checked my firewall and it is not the problem.  How can I get the Import button to work?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • Can't sign in in to iTunes (home sharing) after reset and update apple tv3

can't sign in in to iTunes (home sharing) after reset and update apple tv3

I'm experiencing the exact same thing. Netflix, Youtube and everything else works perfectly, but I'm unable to wirelessly stream anything from my Mac, iPad, or iPhone. All on same wireless channel, all new updates, all have home sharing turned on. Never had a problem the last 2 years.

  • Can i use home sharing if me and my wife have different apple ID accounts?

can i use home sharing if me and my wife have different apple ID accounts?

    Yes.
You need to sign into home sharing using ONE Apple ID. So either pick yours or hers, use the same one for home sharing on the computers. Once they are signed in on both Macs you can access media that the other user purchased.
Click the 'Shared House' for her library (if you have the sidebar enabled) when you are in your iTunes to access her media & vice versa, both iTunes needs to be running & awake.

I have 2 apple tv's but my playlists only show up on one; can I get them to show up on both? I have home sharing turned on and itunes match.

If you are attempting to share to both at the same time, you can't.
Are you selecting the second AppleTV in home sharing options on the MBP. Are all devices signed in for Home Sharing with the same AppleID?

my iPad does not show the Airplay icon.  The software is iOS 7.0.4, I have home sharing turned on and have an Apple TV. What should I do?

If you don't see the AirPlay icon in the Control Center:
    1. Turn off router, Apple TV and iPad
    2. Turn on router and then wait 30 seconds for it to complete start-up process
    3. Turn on Apple TV and then wait 30 seconds for it to complete start-up process
    4. Turn on iPad (wait 30 seconds) and test AirPlay

My new Apple TV won't be recognized by my IPhone Air-Play. I made sure the home sharing is on and that both Devises are I the same network. The IPhone see the other two Apple TVs at my house, but for some reason it won't see the third one I just added.

Check to see if AirPlay is actually turned on.  (in Settings on the ATV)
Also, make sure it's not sitting directly next to your router; interference

  • I rented a movie on my apple computer but it won't play on my apple tv.  i have never had a problem until a month ago.  Home sharing is on, and internet is fine.

I rented a movie on my apple computer but it wont play on my apple tv.  never had problems till 1 month ago.  internet fine, home sharing on.

The movie must fully download to iTunes.
If you have an AppleTV1, have you downloaded a 1080p movie rental as it can't handle that, in which case alter your Preferences for downloads to 720p, contact iTunes Store support and see if they can re-enable the download or refund so you can rent again at 720p.
If you have black model ATV2 or ATV3, then I assume you are looking under the Computers icon where a new Rentals row appears in order to play rentals downloaded to iTunes.

  • Home Sharing on Itunes, Shared network loads and then closes

When trying to share two librarys from my pc and mac, I will try to open my shared network and it will begin to load but before anything shows up it closes and goes back to my music library. Please help!

Thanks for the link, Alix.  Yes, firewall is disabled for iTunes and the specific ports are open.  Thanks for the link.
I also checked my power settings and confirmed that my computer is not going to sleep, hibernating, or powering off..
On last use this afternoon, home sharing cut out after just 10 minutes of connectivity and needed to be reset.
Then, I left ATV running and trying to connect to iTunes.  After 25 minutes of the 'wait' icon, it suddenly reconnected itself.  This is getting more and more puzzling!

  • I cancelled my home sharing half way through and now it won't give me the option to transfer the rest of my songs over... help!

I am trying to transfer all my songs (1400 of them) from my old laptop to my new MacBook Pro. I thought I could just pop in my appleID and it would all appear! I have iTunes Match and thought that may help. None of this seemed to work, so I started the Home Transfer. Then it looked like my iTunes Match was allowing me to access my songs so I cancelled the Home Transfer. Now I'm stuck with only 349 of my songs but when I tried again, my old laptop only has that same 349 songs on the Home Sharing option too. So it seems I can't get the rest on!
I am not very techy and very confused!
    Help!!

Why will it not let you add them?  What specifically are you trying to do, please provide steps.
Frankly, the only thing that should need to be done it restore the iTunes folder from the backup onto the computer.  There is no reason to add or import anything.

  • Home Sharing Between Mac and PC with Windows Vista and Wireless Ethernet

    Hello.
I want to ask if anyone knows what is the problem.
I have Home Sharing Activated in my two computers and File Sharing Activated too.
My MacBook Pro has iTunes 10 and Snow Leopard all updated and my PC has Windows Vista and iTunes 10.
My MacBook Pro is connected to my network wirelessly and my PC is connected by the Ethernet Cable.
    Anyone can help?

since you don't describe the problem in detail, see if something here helps:
what you want to see in iTunes is this (view from my MBP's iTunes seeing the library on my Mini)
if you then click on the house icon, it will change to this and the shared library will load. at that point, two buttons will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes window, being settings and import
now you should be able to import any content from any shared library by selecting the content and clicking on import.
if the icon looks like this , home sharing has not been set up correctly.
in order for home sharing to work
    (a) iTunes on all machines must be authorized for the same iTunes store account
    (b) all machines must be on the same network
    (c) all machines must have access to the internet.
if none of the above makes a difference, try turning home sharing off on all computers, then turning it back on.
these reads will be useful: one and two.

  • Why won't my iTunes home sharing library load in iTunes 10.5.1 on OS Lion?

Home sharing isn't working for me anymore, my shared library just continues to sit in the 'loading' phase and I cant see the my homeshare on any other idevice. C'mon Apple whatever happened to 'It just works'?

So many views on this post yet no helpful reply says that there is no good answer to this problem yet. I've gone through similar threads and tried ALL the suggested fixes. Nothing has worked. My ringtones are missing from my iphone now too. I was looking forward to upgrading to OSi 5, but I can't upgrade until I can backup and sync my iphone!  Come on!  Help!

  • ITunes 9 - Using 'Home Sharing' between Windows and Mac libraries

I have my main iTunes music library stored on my Windows 7 PC. It is currently around 200Gb in size, so pretty large.
I want to be able to use 'Home Sharing' in iTunes 9 to access this library on my Macbook over my home wireless network.
I don't, however, want to copy the music files themselves over to this laptop, but simply access the library over the network, and play them via either iTunes 9 or Front Row.
I would appear that the Windows and Mac 'iTunes Library' xml files are incompatible. I can't 'Alias' the Windows library on the MacBook for this reason. Does 'Home Sharing' eliminate this problem? Is there a way of accessing the library on the Windows PC without copying all of the files over to the MacBook?
I want to maintain a single library (which is often changing with new podcasts etc), rather than 2 libraries which I have to keep in sync.
Does anybody have any ideas on this one? I'm sure I am not alone in having this problem.
    Here's hoping...:)
