Home sharing icon not visible

I have two computers in my home and i am trying to share files between the two. but when i try to use home sharing it doesn't work. home sharing is on and it has the look for shared libraries checked and everything but the home sharing icon on the left side bar isn't visible. help!

the following is for iTunes 9 but, except the colors, applies to iTunes 10 too:
what you want to see in iTunes is this (view from my MBP's iTunes seeing the library on my Mini)
if you then click on the house icon, it will change to this and the shared library will load. at that point, two buttons will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes window, being settings and import
now you should be able to import any content from any shared library by selecting the content and clicking on import.
if the icon looks like this , home sharing has not been set up correctly.
in order for home sharing to work
(a) iTunes on all machines must be authorized for the same iTunes store account
(b) all machines must be on the same network
(c) all machines must have access to the internet.
if none of the above makes a difference, try turning home sharing off on all computers, then turning it back on.
these reads will be useful: one and two.

  • HT202213 home sharing icon not appearing

Although my home sharing in my apple tv was working up until we had problems with our internet (now fixed), I am now having problems!  Although it says turn on home sharing there is no icon in my itunes library to turn on!

If the Home Sharing icon is not visible, choose Advanced > Turn On Home Sharing from the menu bar. (You can disable or enable Home Sharing for your computer using the Advanced menu.)
Note: After enabling Home Sharing, the Home icon representing your computer is no longer visible.

  • Home sharing icon not showing up.

I enabled home sharing on my Dell desktop, HP laptop, and my MacBook. The home shring icon isn't showing up on the sidebar on both my Dell and HP. It is showing up on my MacBook, but that doesn't really help because I want to transfer the music from my Dell to the MacBook and HP. I tried the troubleshooting, including downloading the lastest version of iTunes and turning home shoring off then on, but nothing worked. Any ides or suggestions?

more often than not, this issue is due to network and/or firewall settings. check out these links:

and, last but not least, see this discussion concerning bonjour being the culprit.

  • Home sharing is not visible on one laptop, but the other one is fine.

I need some help.  I am trying to home share between 2 laptops.  Should be simple right?  Laptop A has all the media.  I want Laptop B to be able to access it.  I am using the same itunes ID for both computers and each computer has authorized that account.  Under preferences the sharing in enabled for both laptops.  Laptop A that has all the desired media can also see Laptop B under 'Sharing'.  Laptop B cannot locate laptop A.  There is no sharing icon at all.  I have read through the support, tried authorizing and sharing under preference etc.  Logged in and out multiple times.  I have even updated Bonjour, but I am still unable to view Laptop A or see any sharing icon at all.  The sharing icon simply disappears after I log on to home share.  I am on the same network and there is only one router.  If someone could offer some insight I would be eternally grateful.

  • HT202213 Have newest version of ITunes and a new AppleTV. ITunes File Home Sharing only shows option to turn off home sharing.  No home sharing icon and Apple TV claims home sharing is not turned on.  Where is this advanced menu?

Cannot get home sharing to work with my new apple TV.  Have the latest version of ITunes and the apple TV is connected to my wi-fi network.  The instruction page says to go to the Advanced menu option of ITunes and choose Home Sharing.  This option does not exist.  The closest I can find is under the File option>Home Sharing where my only option is to turn off home sharing.  There is no home sharing icon and Apple TV insist that the home sharing is not turned on.
I must be missing something obvious here.

  • I have a similar question to the one Brendan posted a day or two ago. My wife's MacBook Pro will find my library for home sharing, but my ACER will not even display the home sharing icon. Home sharing on, latest version on iTunes.

I want to get some music from my wife's MacBook Pro via Home Sharing. We both have Home Sharing turned on. Her's displays the Home Sharing icon, and recognizes my library. My ACER will not display the Home Sharing icon, and I cannot access her library. I have verified I have the latest version of iTunes, I have turned Home Sharing off and on again, and still no icon.

  • Home sharing is not work on either of my computers. What can i do to fix this. I am trying to import my library to my new computer.

I have two computers. One that is running windows XP and the new one that is Windows 8. I have tried several times to import my music Library from the old computer. I have installed and uninstalled Itunes. The Apple's help desk had me to re-install. they sent me an email to import my music. The Home sharing  will not stay on after I hit done. what can I do.

A broken logic may also prevent the firewire startup to work; do you actually see a firewire icon moving on the old MBP?  If not, then you logicboard is probably unable to startup in firewire mode.
Your only other option will be to get your harddrive out to place it in an USB enclosure in order for your new laptop to mount your previous drive.
If you have some technical expertise, you may find instruction in how to do this here: http://www.ifixit.com/.  But you could also find a technician to do this part.

  • HT202213 There is NO Home Sharing ICON?!

I just installed the latest version of iTunes on both of my computers, and setup/turned on Home Sharing on both of them.  I also signed them both into the iTunes store.  I cannot share anything! The tutorial says to open iTunes, and click on the Home Sharing icon on the left of the screen.  I do NOT have an Icon, or anything that references Home Sharing.   My only option is to turn it on/off, and is fun for awhile, it quickly gets boring.  Being able to easily setup and share music between my computers would be much nicer!

  • Home sharing icon disappears on PC and Mac

In my house, we've been using home sharing between a PC (Windows 7), a Mac (OS X 10.8.2), and two iPad 2s with no issues for several months.  It was working as recently as 23 Dec 12. Now, two days later, it is not working on the PC or the Mac, but it is still working on the iPads.  When we turn home sharing on, the home sharing icon shows in the sidebar, but as soon as we put in the login and password and click "Done," the home sharing icon disappears.  The Mac and PC are linked up, as we can see the shared library in the "Finder" on the Mac, but it is inaccessible from iTunes.
We've tried all the trouble-shooting we can find online, including disabling the IPv6 on the PC, but still nothing.  Any suggestions  to get this working again would be appreciated!

How do you access the HD from both Mac and PC?
I do this but only by network not direct hookup.
If you are plugging the HD into one or the other I may have a solution for you.
I have all my photos in folders organized the way I want them.
Then I set iPhoto to NOT import the files when I add them.
Preferences > Advanced > make sure the selection of "Importing: Copy items to the iPhoto Library" is not selected.
That way the photos (files) will stay where you put them and the data in iPhoto will still organize and do it's thing on them.
And if you modify a photo with say Photoshop the new file seems to automatically update in the preview of iPhoto.
    Works great for me.
Here is what I have been doing...
    1. When I got my MAC, I copied all of my pictures from my PC onto a portable HD (WD passport).
    2. Then I attached it to the MAC and used iPhoto.
    3. I added new photos only to the passport HD and edited them in iPhoto.
What I was _planning / hoping_ to do is move those photos back to the PC for use in other applcations. But apparently the editted photos aren't on the HD anyway, but on the MAC (in the iPhoto library.)
But I understand that using a referenced library is not a great idea.
(Also, initially I did copy some photos into iPhoto and apparently having a both managed AND a referenced set of files is DOUBLY bad!)
So what I need to do now is fix whatever I "broke" and get a plan to go forward!

  • Can't see the Home Sharing Icon

I can't see the home sharing icon on the left hand itunes menu despite having activated the home share in the advanced settings tab. Can anyone help?

Hey I had the same problem,
Thanks to you I found it.
It's not supposed to be there, once you activate it it goes away.
If you want to see it, go to the advanced tab, click turn it off, then turn it back on, but don't say DONE on the last step or it hides it.
If you go to other computers or laptops it should probablly be there if that's how you configured it...
    hopefully that helps, (:

  • Cant find the home sharing icon on my ipad

The support page tells me to enter a file name but not where to enter it I cant see a home sharing icon on the iturnestore page

Look in Settings > Music > Home Sharing. What is required is your Apple ID.
Home Sharing must also be turned on in iTunes on your computer (File Menu > Home Sharing) and iTunes must be running.
