Home Sharing only HD TV shows. Possible?

I have a large (800GB+) iTunes library on one dedicated Mac mini. I have another, older Mac mini hooked up to one of my TVs as a makeshift AppleTV (my AppleTV video card died of heat failure - white spots). Since the older Mac mini only has a 250GB hard drive space is at a premium and when I transfer TV shows over via Home Sharing I tend to manually go through and delete the (unused) standard definition copy of the shows to save a little space. This is time consuming and wasteful (network time, hard drive read/writes, my time) and I'm wondering if I'm missing a setting.
For shows that I want to move to the smaller Mac mini is there a way to tell Home Sharing to only move the HD and not the SD version of the show? It seems like this should be there somewhere but I'm not seeing it and I'm not seeing much discussion about it anywhere.
As it is now, when a new episode comes out it is automatically downloaded on my main library and then through Home Sharing HD and SD get transferred to my current media library. I then have to remember to go hunt up the shows that still have the SD version and delete all of them (sometimes freeing me up 4 or 5 GB a week).
Thanks for any help or advice.

I experienced the same problem trying to stream TV shows to my iPad via Home Sharing. I found iTunes didn't download the SD version of the TV shows when I purchased the HD version, so I downloaded all the SD versions by unchecking the "Download HD When Available" checkbox under iTunes "Purchased" section. Now my iPad can stream all of the TV shows. My AppleTV was already able to stream all the HD versions normally. I do have a few home movies which have buggy artwork, but I think that is fixable by updating metadata, etc...

  • When using home sharing, will my messages show up on the other devices?

I added another device to my I Tunes account, but I want to know with Home Sharing, will my messages show up as a new message on the other device? And will my alerts for my games show up there too? How can I stop my phone from ringing when someone is facetiming the new device?

We want to share the iTunes account, but when his son calls him on FaceTime, I want that to be just on his device. I want him to have all his own stuff and not be bothered by my candy crush notices or other game notices... Or when I get a message? I have my own IPad, and iPhone. He just has an IPad. Is that possible? I created an Apple ID for him and his own email address so far.

  • Does Home Sharing only work over wi-fi?

This may seem like an odd question, but I think it may be the root of my problem. I have a network that uses three Devolo mains network extenders in various rooms (the house has very thick walls). All three Devolo mains plugs connect (via the ring main) to the router. An iMac, laptops, an Apple TV, iPhones, etc each connect wirelessly to these very happily.
However, no two computers (say an MBA and an iMac) in the same room, or different rooms, can 'see' the other in the normal way - i.e. by having the other device appear in the left hand pane of the finder window. They can, however, if I enter the IP address of the other machine manually. So this is irritating but not insurmountable.
What does appear insurountable though is that, in a similar way, iTunes cannot 'see' any shared libraries across the network. Because of the issue described above, I had assumed that both problems were probably being caused by some sort of issue with the way the Devolo boxes are configured. But then I realised that, even though each device is connecting wirelessly to the Devolo boxes, I don't actually have a wi-fi network in the same sense that I would if I had an Airport-based system...and if Home Sharing only works over wi-fi, this might explain why it doesn't work for me.
Apologies for the rambling question, but given the increasing popularity of these mains network-extender boxes, I feel I can't be alone in experiencing these issues. Can anyone shed any light?

The quick answer to your question is no, for example Home Sharing works over Ethernet as well. Strictly speaking Wi-Fi is not required and iTunes doesn't care either way.
However, I understand that the Devolo mains adapters have problems coping with this. If I had to guess, the problem might be an inability to carry the required bandwidth. The reason for this is that Airtunes is fairly demanding of bandwidth and if your wireless network's performance is degraded due to any number of variables, Airtunes is the first to suffer.
You didn't say what kind of computer or OS you are using but Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP ports 123 and 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries. Those ports need to be configured in whatever firewall or security settings you may be using. If you are certain you have those ports open on your shared computers then concentrate on the Devolo adapters. Perhaps they are in need of a firmware update or modification of some configuration setting.

Does home sharing only work if you're connected to the wi-fi? Im having very sporadic results with this. I thought Apple products worked. Home sharing is not working from my windows operating system to my iPhone 4S nor my iPad.

  • Home sharing only sharing SOME apps

    Hi all,
I recently started using Home Sharing to share libraries across three machines in our home network, and just noticed that not all of the apps can be shared.
First off, this is not a "how do I enable home sharing" post! I got Home Sharing up and running successfully across all three machines in the house (or so I thought). All three are running iTunes 9.2 and OS 10.6.4, and all are logged into Home Sharing using the same account info.
Machine A currently has 45 iPhone apps in its library. Home Sharing is setup with machine B's account info, but B is authorized to use A's music and apps. When I look at A's library from B, I only see a list of 39 apps available. (That's with "show all items" selected, not just "show items not in my library".) So why the missing 6? I'm unable to see any pattern to the six that don't appear. (It's always the same six, I just don't see anything in common across the set of six.)
I tried turning off Home Sharing and quitting iTunes across all machines. I restarted iTunes and this time set up Home Sharing using A's account across all machines. From A, when I try to drag one of the 6 "missing" apps to B's library (Vector Tanks, for example), it won't let me -- the red "1" icon indicating that I'm dragging one item doesn't find a "home" in B's library.
    I'd be grateful for suggestions!
    Thanks,
    Brad

Home sharing really does seem to be a bit flakey. I've been digging around a little. As you;ve probably already read, there are two files in your iTunes library.  One ends in .itl and the other .xml.  The .xml is human readable.  The /itl file contains details of all your songs and playlists according to the Apple site.   But it looks to be in binary as there is nothing in ASCII that I can see.   The .xml file IS written in ASCII and so readbale by us humans.  According to the Apple website, it contains similar information to the .itl file but the webopage does not say where it is different.
Anyway, I created a new iTunes library and gradually added a few CDs to see what happened in the .xml file. My reason? Well, like you, my iPod Touch does not show up all the artists. It drops some. Out of four artists I can see 3. It is weird.  I started off with the blank library and added a CD of Berlioz.  The iPod Touch showed up Berlioz as the artist (I should add that I use the Artist data field for composer since Apple, in their infinite wisdom, decreed one could not search on composer.   So one entry in the library and it was visible on the iPod.
Import a second CD .  Berlioz disappears and the new composer is visible. In fact, this CD has three composers on it. All three are visible. Import a third CD - again Berlioz - and Berlioz still does not appear.  The music is there in the Album listing but not in the artist.
As I said, HomeSahring is flakey.

  • Apple TV Home Sharing only detects Macbook Pro but not iPads

    Hello
My Apple TV (2nd gen) will only detect my Macbook Pro on Home Sharing. I have two iPads (1st gen and iPad Mini) both updated to the latest iOS but they just wont show up on apple TV home sharing.
    Any thoughts?
The software on all devices is up to date, and all devices are connected to the same network.

Your first generation iPad is only capable of basic AirPlay, instruction for basic AirPlay are:
Assuming both devices are on the same network and that AirPlay is not turned off on the Apple TV, then simply tap on the screen when you are watching content you wish to stream to your Apple TV, then tap the airplay icon that appears in the control bar, choose the Apple TV from the menu that appears.
Your problems on the iPad mini, indicate a network problem at your end, perhaps the distances are too great or you have interference on your network.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • Home sharing only available for a few minutes

    Hello everyone,
So I have a strange problem and I'll do my best to explain everything I've tried and my current setup.
Origonal setup (Was working then just completely stopped)
Windows Server 2008 (non R2) on an old computer (Currently offline)
System was Domain Controller, DNS Server, DHCP server and File server as well as running iTunes
New setup (Thought it would fix the issue)
Windows Server 2003 (fully updated and freshly installed for the sole purpose of iTunes home sharing)
Different system then the 2008 and only runs iTunes and AirVideo Server (not joined to domain, never was)
Linksys router handling DNS, DHCP again since I found out about the .local bonjour "bug" so I shutdown my Domain Controller to test
I have a Linksys smart Wi-FI router (my old router was dropping wireless connections around the same time so I figured it was the router) with dual band wireless (Cortana and Cortana-2.4). The 2003 ("MediaCentral") is connected via a known good ethernet cable directly to the router. My Macbook Pro (Late 2012) is connected wirelessly to Cortana. All devices (including my parents iPhone 4's) are authorized under my Apple ID and signed into home sharing.
I start iTunes on my macbook and my iPhone 5 sees the library no problem. I start iTunes on server and my macbook and phone both see it. The server, however, does not see my macbook's library. (which isn't really a big deal anyways). I can connect to the servers library and start watching a movie, heck I can watch the entire movie, faster forword, rewind pause all that stuff. As long as I don't disconnect it seems to work fine. The movie I currently have in the library is Transforms: Dark of the Moon bought on the iTunes store. My parents iPhone's never see the servers library. Our Apple TV see's it the same way my phone does and also sees my macbooks library.
Here's where things really go weird: If I didn't connect to the servers library within a few minutes of starting iTunes, it will disappear or fail to connect and then disappear (I guess the only reason it didn't disappear earlier was because of like a cache or something) and the only way to make it available again is by restarting iTunes on the server. Those first few minutes are like the golden time frame I guess you can call it. I don't know exactly how long until it stops working but I know it's not a long time. Probably less then five minutes.
So there's my situation, can anyone provide any guidence or suggestions to help me solve this?
I will be setting up a new domain controller under server 2012 but with a different domain name (matrix.dustinschreiber.com probably) as to avoid the .local bonjour problem.

Same issue exactly.  Best thing to di is contact Apple so that they become aware of this regression.  Below is what I have been posting:
Home sharing with the new Apple TV / iTunes update is just broke.  Only works for a bit unless you restart iTunes or disable / re-enable Home Sharing.  Use to work great until the last updates.  This is not a network (router, firewall, ...) issue - just a (bad) regression in Apples software.  Hopefully they fix this soon, hard to believe its been broke this long already.  The Remote app update also fails to connect to Apple TVs (but does connect to iTunes) for many people as well.  Poor QA all around. :(
I have yet to see any suggestion that actually works other than reverting to previous versions of fwr / iTunes - which is a pain / joke to do.

  • I disconnected someone from home sharing but it still shows up. how do i get rid of the other library?

i have my brother's library shared with mine through home sharing, but i hate having all of his songs show up in my library and he hates having my songs show up. we both turned off home sharing in the advanced tab and disconnected each others' libraries from our itunes but they won't go away!

Try Deauthorize This Computer... under iTunes menu Store.

  • Home Sharing option is not showing up?

I have a desktop running Windows Vista and a laptop running Windows 7, both with the latest version of iTunes. I have Home Sharing turned on on both of them but the option for it is not showing up in iTunes. It worked once a few days ago (not sure why, as I can't remember doing anything differently) but I haven't gotten it to work since. I've tried turning it on and off on both computers, but no luck. Any suggestions?

Never mind, I figured out what I was doing wrong. You have to go to Edit, Preferences, Sharing, Share my library on my local network, and hit okay. And I think that iTunes must be open on both devices for it to work, but I'm not sure about that and it's too late at night for me to test it.

  • Apple Tv no photos. Home sharing only lasts for one session

My Apple Tv only shares photos for a while then my computers name disappears from head list I can only access Music after subscribing to I match and using I cloud. Have tried some ideas suggested by others with similar problems; and 4 calls with Apple TV support culminated in in 2 responses "we are not trained to assist with entering access ports in port forwarding. " Try calling BT re your home hub. Bt check out all ok with set up . Final response from Apple support "must be your Dell computer (only one year old and all is well!! Other people seem to feel abandoned by Apple. I had a response to an email as a last resort which was full of meaning less platitudes and attached 3 links to Apple support pages. Have now spent about 30 hours on this and next step is return to Amazon to see if they will exchange or refund. I do thinkl that Apple tv is a great concept. Why is it the Itunes store and paid for purchase areas always work fine. Am I being uinkind? If not please let me know of same problem and any fix that works because I am pretty fed up with it.

  • Home Sharing Problem: Import Button & "Show" Dropdown menu are missing?

    Hi Everyone,
My wife and I are both running iTunes on Macbook Pros and we are both logged into eachother's iTunes libraries through Home Sharing accounts. However, the Import button on the bottom has disappeared, so has the "Show" dropdown menu that is typically to the left of the Import button on the bottom of the screen when you are in the other person's Music Library. The Show dropdown memu typically displays the options: All and Not in Library. We can play and listen to each other's music, however we can't Import songs. Can anyone help me troubleshoot this problem??
    Thanks,
    Patrick

To clarify as I have this problem repeatedly here is the description and the cure.
Sharing is enabled in the sharing tab.  Other computers can see this computers library but cannot import.  The icon for the home sharing doesn't show the "house" - it just shows some musical notes.
This means that home sharing is not enabled.  JUST SHARING.
In Itunes 11 use: File/Menu/Home Sharing/Turn on Home sharing.
    But you are not done.
When home sharing shows up now in the left panel - click it. The right panel will present a sign on for your apple ID.  Sign on and enable home sharing.
Then you will be able to import form the target computer again.
It gets disabled with OS upgrades and sometimes with iTunes updates.

  • HT202213 Home Sharing icon does not show up after hitting "done" when following steps to set up homesharing

After upgrading to new itunes application I attempted to set-up home sharing between my macpro lap top and my imac. Used same apple id on both machines.
When I turn on home sharing the icon shows up in menu. When I hit "done" icon disappears and there is no way to use home sharing. At no time did I have access to the itunes library in the other machine.

    Hiya!
Well first off... I'm baffled that you succeeded in setting up personal email without a data plan.
You need a data plan to access the BIS network which allows you web browsing (off wifi), email, BBM and the like.
