Home Sharing suddenly stopped working from iTunes

I've been running Home Sharing from iTunes so that I can watch movies on the Apple TV for months now without problems.  Within the last week, I noticed that the two were no longer connecting despite the fact that both products indicate that Home Sharing is enabled.  I came across a possible solution when I discovered that if I connect my desktop to my router using a wireless connection, I'm able to see my shared library on the ATV and my iPhone.  Once I disable the wireless connection, going with a wired connection instead, the shared library is no longer accessible.
I'm running XP, iTunes 10.6.3 and using the router that came with my Verizon Fios service.
While I can use a wireless connection to use Home Sharing (for now), I'd prefer to switch back to a wired connection if possible.  Anyone have any ideas whats wrong?

No. This has been an ongoing issue and restarting the the computer or the router has no effect.  Reinstalling iTunes didn't help either.

  • Why did Home Sharing suddenly stop working for PC libraries?

BACKGROUND: Ecosystem consisting of one PC with medium-sized iTunes library (7,000+ songs and 3,000+ photos), 2 Mac Minis, two MacBook Airs, Apple TV 2, Airport Extreme Base Station, Airport Express in extender mode, Windows Home Server 2003 with iTunes server module, iPhone 4s and iPad 2.
All the latest updates installed. Airplay, Photostream, iCloud and Home Sharing all installed and everything working happily, as advertised. I've had other issues, like everyone else, but Home Sharing has worked pretty much without fail for as long as I can remember -- years.
THEN,  SUDDENLY: On the evening evening of Sunday October 23, 20011, Apple TV stops seeing "Arthur's Library" -- my main library, located in the latest update of iTunes, on my PC.
AND IT VANISHES ELSEWHERE: I click on "Arthur's Library" and the B&W "wheel" ground for about ten seconds -- then the library disappeared. Figuring it might be an Apple Tv issuem I opened my Air, loaded iTunes, attempted to load "Arthurs Library" and the same thing happened. Library just disappeared.
So I go to my PC and fiddlewith iTunes.
Turn off home sharing, reboot for the heck of it, turn home sharing back on.
And the library reappears on Apple TV and other home share devices...
Only to DISAPPEAR when I tried to load it, exactly as before!
So I dutifully go through all the other trouble-shooting steps suggested by the oft-quoted Apple Support article, plus some others:
    1. I turn off photo sharing, because I had been doing this over the weekend, just prior to failure of home sharing. No dice.
    2. Power off both routers. Wait. Restart. No joy.
    3. Check firewall settings. All as they should be,
    i
    * I kind of doubt it's a router issue, because home sharing works just fine with the Macs.
    * Kind of doubt it's an interference issue, because Airplay from my iPhone and iPad to the Apple TV works like a charm.
    * Can't think of any updates of any kind installed in between "all systems go" and "FAIL"
ANOTHER CLUE? The little "Airplay" icon that normally appears in the bottom right-hand corner of ITunes on my PC has disappeared. So maybe the issue is BONJOUR? Okay, I go into Services, and Bonjour is running. I stop it, restart it, then restart iTunes on my OC, ditto on my MacBook Air. No joy. And now, as I'm writing this, I notice a...
SECOND MYSTERY! Suddenly, my Mac can't load the library from my Windows Home Server 2003 installation, which has NOTHING TO DO with Home Sharing. This thing has ALWAYS worked everywhere before. Now the wheel just grinds endlessly, whenever I try to load the library on my server.
I'm out of my depth, guys. HELP! And thanks in advance for your time and advice.

Well, the first problem resolved itself just as mysteriously as it arrived, spurred perhaps by yet another Windows patch or Who Knows What. The second problem persists. Suggestions?

  • Home sharing suddenly stopped working. All devices have home sharing enabled, all devices are using the same network but cant see each other

I've gone through all the Googling and support forums I can handle.. They all tell me to the same things. I have done everything required and quite honestly Home Sharing was working for quite some time. So I don't think I changed anything.
The only culprit I can think of is the wireless network. We had to call Comcast and reset our service, and they gave us a new modem. Our router is also new.
Is there a setting in a router that lets multiple devices connect but blocks each of them to each other? That seems to be what's happening.
Apple TV2 can see our connection no problem and can download trailers (downloading movies never works though!!!), we have two Macs and two iPhones and all are on our wireless and none can connect to one another using Home Sharing.
Please help!! This is an odd one!!

I believe this is true. Alas, I wrote this a while ago and the link is dead. I can't totally remember what the issue was.
But, looking through the PDF for the Linksys e2000, searching for 'filter multicast' I see this:
Filter Multicast The multicasting feature allows for multiple transmissions to specific recipients at the same time . If multicasting is permitted, then the Router will allow IP multicast packets to be forwarded to the appropriate computers . Select this option to enable the filter . This option is disabled by default.
And in my settings it's been enabled. So maybe try that.
Filter multicast is under Securtiy>Firewall after you log in as admin.
Why it's disabled by default I do not know.
Good luck! Hope this is the solution!! Apple should warn people of this feature conflict to Apple TV buyers.

  • Home sharing does not work with iTunes 12

I have been using home sharing with iTunes a lot, mainly to stream TV shows from my Mac Pro (2008) to my Apple TV (3rd Gen). But after installing Yosemite and iTunes 12 it doesn't work any longer. My Apple TV finds the iTunes Library, but can't connect with it. At the same time home sharing worked just fine with my iPhone 5 and iPad 2 (iOS 8.0.2). After installing iOS 8.1 home sharing with my iOS devices doesn't work, too – same problem as with Apple TV: iTunes library is found but devices can't connect with it.
I already tried to solve the problem with the suggestions on Apples troubleshooting page:  Fehlerbehebungsmaßnahmen für die Privatfreigabe
    My setup:
Mac Pro (2008) with OS X 10.10 (14A389), iTunes 12.0.1.26, connected via Ethernet and WiFi
    Router: Fritz!Box Fon WLAN 7270
    iPhone 5 with iOS 8.1
    iPad 2 with 8.1
Apple TV (3rd Gen), newest software update, connected via Ethernet
Any ideas, what the reason for that problem could be and how to solve it?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
BTW: Sorry for my English. I am not a native speaker.
    Greetings from Germany

I had the same problem after updating to iTunes 12 and using my iPhone 6.
I have solved it by doing these simple steps:
    1. Turn off Home Sharing in iTunes. Close it.
    2. In your iOS 8 device, Turn on Home Sharing: Settings/Music/Home Sharing
    3. Open back iTunes
It looks like in one of the updates, possibly iOS 8.1, had signed off Home Sharing completely.

  • Internet sharing suddenly stopped working - please help!

I have been sharing my internet for weeks from my computer but this morning it suddenly stopped working. I've tried changing the password, changing the channel number, and changing the Network name to a simple one, but it is all not working Apparently the authentication server is not responding? How can I fix that?

I'm having the same problem. I had internet sharing set up on my iMac from Ethernet via AirPort, and received quite well on my MacBook and iPod Touch, and then one day, it just stopped working. I'm assuming that some update or other caused this problem, but I have no idea which (I mostly use the internet on my desktop machine, so it may have been several days before I noticed the problem). I've tried with-and-without a password, and also tried sharing from my MacBook to the iMac and iPod Touch, and I can't get any bandwidth (I can connect to the 802.11 network that I create, but I can't get any internet through it).

  • Home Sharing no longer works between iTunes and Apple TV.

I've been through all the forums, tried all the solutions provided and I have come to the conclusion that Home Sharing just no longer works between iTunes on a PC and my Apple TV.  Does anyone know if this issue will be addressed or should I list my Apple TV up on eBay?  (along with my iPad, iPod, and iPhone, since all system no longer sync together as before.)
    My issue:
My iTunes library is no longer listed under "Computers" on the Apple TV.
The airplay icon no longer shows up in iTunes. (Version 11)
I cannot play music/content from my iPhone or iPad via remote that is stored in my iTunes library through my Apple TV.
I can however play music/content that is stored locally on my iPhone and iPad through my Apple TV.
My firewall settings are allowing access to Apple TV.
After logging into my router, I see no issues there.
I've logged in/out, turned home sharing on/off, de-authorized/authorized, and restarted my PC, Apple TV, and Router.
All devices are logged into the same iTunes account, and are on the same wireless network.
    Time for a solution Apple.

If you turn off wifi on your  Computer and connect it to the apple tv using an ethernet cable can you see your library under computers in Apple TV.
If yes the issue is with your wifi not the Apple TV
You may want to try the troubleshooting article
    I also found this article
    iTunes Home Sharing Not Working
Not working and sometimes when it is working, it cuts out in the middle, or when you click on the computer name, the focus goes away from the library.  In other words, really weird.
    What it is
iTunes has a feature called "Home Sharing" - it basically allows you to share your entire or part of your library with other instances of iTunes in your home network.  It requires you to login to your iTunes account on both computers.  A typical scenario is to enable Home Sharing on your desktop machine and then access the library from your iPad, Apple TV, iPhone, Mac, etc.
In my case, I have iTunes on my desktop machine running Windows XP in the attic with Home Sharing enabled and then I access the library from my Macbook and Apple TV, depending on what I want.  How to use Home Sharing can be found here.
    Symptoms
Home Sharing machine not showing up in Apple TV or the Macbook
The Macbook home sharing not showing up on my desktop
    Home Sharing working intermittently
    Connections getting cut of intermittently
Usually, restarting iTunes or the desktop computer will make things work.
Sometimes, restarting the Macbook or the Apple TV will make things work.
    The "working" doesn't last long
The FixOn the desktop computer where the Home Sharing is enabled, I disabled the "QoS Packet Scheduler" from the network connection:
    Open Control Panel
    Open Network Connections
Right-Click on your connection (in my case, it was "Wireless Network Connection 4"
    Select Properties
    Uncheck "QoS Packet Scheduler"
    Click OK
    Restart iTunes if necessary
After doing the above, Home Sharing worked like a charm.

  • Home sharing does not work in iTunes 9??

I have spent hours going through this and conclude there must be something up with home sharing in the latest iTunes - I had no problem with it previously.
I have everything checked that should be checked, my iMac and MacBook are on the same local wireless connection and it's fully functional. I can manually transfer files if I want.
File sharing is on, home sharing is on in iTunes and "share entire library". "Look for shared libraries" and "share libraries on local network" is checked in both computers. I am logged into the iTunes store on both computers.
But there is no shared list in either machine, and in iTunes > Preferences it says "No users connected" - even though both computers are connected to the network. And it makes no difference if I log in to one or both computers and mount the volumes or not. Nothing will make it work. Rebooting, quitting iTunes, switching home sharing off and then on again, clearing out all my old passwords in Keychain... nothing. Any suggestions welcome.

    HALLELULAH!
Well thanks to everyone that tried to help with this. I can't believe it has taken me two whole weekends to sort this out. And yes I did go to my local Apple store but they said that everything I had already done was what they would have suggested - they were interested to know as well.
Pretty sure this is not any fault with iTunes. What I had to do, finally, was completely wipe the HD of my MacBook, clean install the original software, register it, update it, reinstall all the other software I needm register and update it, reset iSynch, Mobile Me etc. etc. Finally, after everything else was done (about 12 hours work), I imported all my music and playlists into iTunes, fired it up - and the Home Sharing worked straight away first time!!!!!
Peculiar thing is that in iTunes > Preferences > Sharing at the bottom of the window, it still says "Status: no users connected" on both computers". Even though the Home Sharing is on and running and the shared libraries are all visible and working. Unless that's something to do with password settings, I don't know (I don't use any password setting on iTunes sharing as it just "I, me and myself"). But I don't care, IT WORKS!!!
Along the way I also reset my router a couple of times, but I think the route of the problem (no pun intended) was not that. What I would definitely very strongly recommend to anyone is, whatever you do, don't use Migration Manager to copy all of the stuff on your desktop computer onto your laptop (which is what I did a week ago after installing a new drive and more ram so I can run Logic Studion on the MacBook). Doing that caused the most incredible problems, of which Home Sharing turned out to be the least. All kinds of weird stuff was going on and the MacBook became increasingly degraded in performance, the network was going nuts, until I was forced to take the drastic steps above. The solution was to start again (NOT with Migration Manager) installing everything from DVD or manually dragging it across item by item, registering and updating... hence the ludicrous amount of tme I have just spent on this.
    It's great when it works

  • Home Sharing No Longer Works in iTunes 11

Ever since iTunes 11, the home sharing to my two Apple TVs, iPhone and iPad has been disabled.  I've checked the firewall and iTunes is listed as having an open port, adjusted the compatibility settings on iTunes for Windows 7.  Apple fix this.

Home Sharing works once after I start iTunes on the Mac.
Next time I want to watch a film, it justs hangs and says it cannot connect to my iTunes library.
I have the same issue on 5 ATVs round the house (some wired some wireless), I have tried fixed and DHCP IP addressing, I have moved the Mac to be on the same switch as one of the ATVs and  the problem is still there.
I have tried a different Mac running Mountain Lion and the same thing happens.
At the moment in order to watch a film I have to use Remote Desktop to log onto the Mac and stop and start iTunes then the ATV sees the library. Watch film. Move to other room, fire up ATV no library, use Remote Desktop, rinse and repeat....frustrating isn't the word.

  • Home Share has stopped working in iTunes (10.5.2.11)

My iPod touch Remote no longer works to find the library on my Windows XP computer. It has worked for some long time here prior to this newest version of iTunes. (It doesn't work on my iPad either.)
If I turn off the Windows fire wall it works very well! So there must be some ports that need to be enabled. The question is what ports.

Home share uses the following: Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries --- this according to Apple. I had previously opened UDP port 5353 to solve another problem. Opening TCP 3689 solved the home sharing problem.

  • Web sharing suddenly stops working

    Hello there!
I'm using web sharing all the time to stream content from my mac to my ps3. It was always working flawlessly with no issues whatsoever. Today there's no way I can connect to from my ps3 and any other device as well. It's not a password error message I'm just getting a "could not connect to the server" error.
I opened up the apache 2 server log and I'm getting a variety of errors. I'm not really sure though what they mean.
If anyone has any ideas please let me know!!

  • Sharing music stops working after iTunes 6.0.3

I have a Maxtor network storage drive with a bunch of music on it. With iTunes 6.0.3, the server shows up automatically on my list of Playlists and I can play any of the music on the drive. No fuss, no muss, works brilliantly.
My wife upgraded her laptop to iTunes 6.0.4 and then to 6.0.5 and on HER machine, she can't play the music. The server still shows up on the list of Playlists, but clicking on it only gets a quick "barber pole" in iTunes and a message "Loading Server" that quickly goes away. The focus then immediately goes to Library.
If I double-click on the server playlist, I get a brief separate window, which then goes away, once again back to the main window, defaulting to the Library.
Sounds like Apple changed something after iTunes 6.0.3 that disallows connecting to the server...but iTunes can still SEE the server and put it in the playlists.
Any ideas how to fix this, short of downgrading everything to 6.0.3? Right now, I'm worried about losing this functionality for good if there's a new, needed update. I guess I'm hoping that maybe it's an incompatibility on some of the other machines?

I have exactly the same problem - never been able to get this to work. Maxtor NEVER replies to any support questions... So i guess I bought this thing - and it doesn't work - and Maxtor wont support it. please - if anyone has this working - post.
    thanks

  • X220 tablet - sound suddenly stopped working from speakers and headphone (but not bluetooth)

X220 tablet (about 2.5 yrs old, out of warranty) was working completely fine last night; this morning, no sound is coming from the laptop, either through speakers or through headphones (audio jack).  I am, however, able to get sound through a bluetooth-connected speaker.
I had hoped this was a software issue.  Tried uninstalling/installing all sound devices, updating BIOS, updating drivers, system restore to previous date, rebooting a million times, etc.  No joy.
When I run the sound troubleshooter, it says that no speaker, headset, or headphone appears to be plugged in.  The sound icon has a little red circle/white X next to it.  When I try to plug in headphones, nothing happens -- does not seem to detect the event.  When I press the mute and volume buttons on the tablet, no response.
Also, under Device Manager -> Sound, video and game controllers, it lists only "Bluetooth Hands-free Audio" and "Intel Display Audio".  I don't think either of these is the normal X220 audio driver, is it?  What else should be there?  I downloaded the Conexant Audio Software from Lenovo's site (this is what came up when I searched for audio drivers for the X220 tablet), and tried to install it, but halfway through, it said the install failed because it couldn't locate the device for the driver.
This sounds like it's a hardware problem -- any way to verify?  Also, which piece of hardware exactly?  Is it the sound card (that's presumably integrated into the motherboard --> no easy fix)?  I'm guessing it's not the speakers themselves since the headphone jack is also affected, but what is my best line of testing at this point to confirm that?  If it IS the sound card, any suggestions on the best fix?
    Many thanks in advance!
    Solved!

I was wrong - I did upgrade to a 3 yr warranty (had forgotten about this) so hopefully it's covered!

After the last up-date several weeks ago, Home Sharing has stopped working. Have tried re-booting WiFi server, Reset and Restore Apple TV, re-loaded iTunes and nothing works. Any suggestions ?

I had this problem and do have have this same problem every time iTunes updates. What works for me is this.
1: reset windows fire wall to default which removes all apple software for the list of allowed programs. 2: go to programs and features on the control panel, select bonjour and click the repair button to reinstall it. 3: restart your pc. 4: once up and running go back to your firewall and re ad all apple programs(iTunes bonjour iCloud etc.)to the allowed list for your private home network. Exit out and open iTunes. I did this this morning and every part of home sharing is now working flawlessly for me across all devices.
