Home Sharing - Transferring Ratings

Okay, my problem is that I need to also transfer my ratings to my other computer on which I am using Home Sharing. I've read a couple of posts which suggest that you can export a playlist from the main computer, then import it on the second computer and the ratings and play counts will update. However, I've tried this a few times with different playlists (Library, smart lists, normal playlists, etc.) and have not noticed any results thus far.
So, my question is does anyone know any way to complete this task which doesn't involve a roundabout hack (like making a playlists with all the five stars and then bulk rating them)? I'd appreciate any help, thanks!

That's funny, I'm also trying to do this on my ATV server. I'm using a PowerMac G4 tower with a 1TB drive to serve my movies and music to my ATV, and I want the ratings to sync. The only way I can really figure out is to make a smart playlist on my main library with all 5 star songs, export it as .txt and import it in to my other machine. Then select all of the files in that playlist and group edit those files. Then, do the same thing for 4, 3, 2, 1 stars. It takes a bit, but it's the only round-about way I can think of for now.

  • Home sharing transfers

I just enabled home sharing on my MacBook pro and my iPad, the remote is working great to play music on the MacBook controlled by the iPad. I seem to be at a loss of how to actually transfer music from the MacBook to the iPad. Do I need to do the old way with cords and syncing? I thought there was a way to transfer with the home share feature.
    Thanks for the help!

I'm afraid so. You can stream content to an iOS device via home sharing, but you can't transfer/sync content to an iOS device. (At least, not at the time that I'm making this post.)

  • Home Sharing: Transferring files

    Hello,
I am in the process of transferring files (songs) from one computer to another over a WiFi network at home. It seems rather slow. I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, but can I connect the two computers directly -- instead of over WiFi -- and have the files transfer quicker? If so, what is the best way for me to do that?
    Thanks!

You can preserve such metadata - worth an initial trial on simply moving as outlined - if metadata is lost you can reinstate by accessing the itunes library .xml file, to force itunes to read it you would need to clear the .itl file (if essential this will work but it is best avoided since it requires iTunes to rebuild your library from the .xml file).

  • HT4527 I would like to transfer music from iTunes on the same computer (two different users). Can I do that with home sharing? If so, how?

I see many discussion about transferring between two different computers but not one with just one computer. My husband and I use one Macbook, have two iTunes accounts and want to share some recently imported music.

    many thanks.
Actually, Home Sharing should work in your situation, because iTunes for Mac supports Fast User Switching. (You're better off in this regard than us over here on the iTunes for Windows side.)
The basic trick is that iTunes has to be open in both user accounts at once. Set Home Sharing up in your husband's account. Now switch over to your account, launch iTunes and set up home sharing there. You should be able to see his library now. Transferring from his library is now as per the standard instructions for Home Sharing transfers.

  • How do I transfer my iTunes library to a new computer?  I have transferred purchased music but wish to transfer the rest of my library.  Home sharing isn't responding and the computers are going to be in different locations.

How do I transfer my iTunes library from my old computer to my new one?  I have successfully transferred purchased music but not my library of CDs.  Home sharing will not work, and isn't working in fact, as the computers will be in different countries.

Assuming your library is in the default location and all of the media is stored within the library's media folder then this is what you need to do:
Copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source computer to <User's Music> on the target computer.
You can do this directly over a network (making use of shared network folders) or by making a copy on an external drive, moving the drive between computers, and copying again. Any way that works is good. However if you say that you cannot use Home Sharing (doesn't work properly anyway) because the source and target are not on the same network then method 2 as I describe it won't work either.
Your playlists, play counts, ratings etc. are stored inside the database iTunes Library.itl which is inside the iTunes folder and a successful migration includes all of this information, not just the media files. I recommend method 1 from the earlier link as it sets you up with a backup mechanism to use in future. All hard drives fail eventually and often without warning, or at least a warning that is noticed and then heeded.
If the initial assumption is wrong, or you need help checking, just ask.

  • HT202667 Hi - My daughter was using her Apple TV until recently when she got a Smart TV.  Now the Apple TV is not needed so she passed it on to me.  How do I get it transferred over from her Home Sharing account to mine so that I can use it with my PC?

Hi - My daughter was using her Apple TV until recently when she got a Smart TV.  Now the Apple TV is not needed so she passed it on to me.  How do I get her Home Sharing account transferred over to mine so that I can use it with my PC? Thanks!

As  Winston Churchill wrote, however you might want to do a factory reset on the Apple TV.
This way all information pertaining to your daughter will be removed from the device. Specifically if see was sign into any of the streaming service, Netflix, Hulu, etc. her credentials will still be associated with this Apple TV, doing  a factory reset will remove all that and make it as if you purchased the device and just plugged it in.

There is no need to import anything or use Home Sharing.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer, everything will be exactly as it was.

  • I would like to transfer a playlist and associated music from one computer on a home sharing network to another without transferring the entire library.  How?

I would like to transfer a playlist and associated music from one computer to another in a home sharing network without transfering the entire itunes library.  How would I do that?

you can transfer playlists using home sharing but it won't copy the actual music files within to the other machine.
however, i believe TuneRanger can do that.

  • HT202213 How do I undo automatic transfers set up on home sharing?

How do I undo automatic transfers set up on home sharing? After I set up home share to automatically transfer music from one computer, that library does not show up under the sharing tab, and I can't get it back to change the settings. I tried turning home share on and off, but that does not bring the library back. Also uninstalled and reinstalled itunes; that didn't work either...

  • HT4527 Copying ratings via home sharing

    Hi,
is it possible to get the ratings across as well when importing via home sharing? I use smart playlists so I'd like to be able to transfer the ratings of the songs as well. Many thanks. I'm assuming that's in the XML. Note I don't want to import the whole library, rather, selected albums from time to time
    Cheers
Not this is using macs. For some reason I can only pick iTunes via windows in the drop down list

  • Hard crash when transferring film over Home Sharing

I've discovered an issue with my late 2010 iMac and Home Sharinh
When, using Tunes (10.4) and transferring a film from my Mac mini's shared Home Sharing library, the iMac always experiences a hard crash (OS X locks up telling me I have to power off and on again).
At first I thought it was an issue with the iMac's OS, but found it's specific to my iMac itself.  I discovered this as:
Issue occurred when using a Lion OS on external hard drive on iMac (OS 1)
Issue occurred when using iMac's hard drive's OS (OS 2)
Issue didn't occur on MacBook Pro (OS 3)
Issue didn't occur when using the Lion OS from external hard drive on MacBook Pro (OS 1)
As you can see the issue seems specific to the iMac as when trying a different machine (using either that machine's OS or an external hard drive bootable OS that had issues on the iMac), the issue doesn't occur.
All machines are using OS X Lion and fully up to date.
Copying large files over AFP and FTP doesn't have this issu.
Just when copying larger files via Home Sharing, and only on my iMac, no matter if I use it's own OS or one that works fine on other hardware that's on an external hard drive.
Any ideas on what to do?

Here's the crash report, seems to be the Airport that's causing the issue:

    Can anyone help please

If the computer only starts in safte mode, it is highly unlikely that network functionality works.
Copy or move the ENTIRE iTunes folder (and any other personal data you want) to an external drive.
