Home Sharing vs one library?

Hi all -
I just bought a new MacMini, which I plan to add a ThunderBolt Raid drive and stick in the closet as an itunes Server for my Music and Movies.
My question - do I simply use iTunes sharing? Or can I point my MacBook to the new shared library? Which is preferred.
Also, do I keep my iphone/ipad apps on my MacBook for syncing, or should they live on the MacMini? Never done this before so any advice helpful.
Thanks!

"It is possible to listen the music stored on your laptop  on Iphone or Ipad by dowloading on Appstore the free app "Remote"."
The Remote app allows you to play iTunes on the other computer. It does not allow you to listen to music from the remote computer.
With Home Sharing enabled, you can open the Music app or the Videos app and listen to or view the library on the other computer.

  • Switching home sharing between one apple ID and another

If I turn off home sharing with one apple id, will I lose all the music linked to it in my itunes library?

but I would like to be able to dowload content to the Ipad as well.
I'm afraid that you can't sync content to an iOS device via Home Sharing (you can only stream it to an iOS device via Home Sharing).

  • Can I use home sharing to import library changes from one library to another, on the same computer without duplicating the song/movie?

I have two imacs, each with multiple accounts.  The itunes source data (music videos etc) is stored in the shared area of one imac. What is the best way of keeping each account on each imac up to date with any changes/additions in the source data?  I felt that Home sharing could be a solution, and it works well by import the library onto the second mac and I can also see if there are any changes by using the "Show items not in my lbrary" function.  However, this only works well for one account on the second mac, for the other accounts it will re-import and duplicate the data .

Locate them in the Windows Explorer, move or copy those files as you would any other, and drag them into the open iTunes window when the second library is loaded. If you're using two iTunes libraries on one user account, you only need to locate the files; otherwise, they need to be put in a shared area.

  • IPhones can't access Home Sharing w/ One Computer & Multiple iTunes Libraries

I have a Mac Pro that I am using as a iTunes media server for my home entertainment network. This computer has two user accounts. Each user account has it's own iTunes Library. One is for my kid's movies and the other is for my wife and I's movies. I have both of the libraries setup for Home Sharing and for the most part this works perfectly for viewing with Apple TV and the laptops that we have. Both libraries are available for use on these devices.
Where I am having trouble is with iPhones. My wife and I have iPhone 6s and when we open the Videos app it shows that only one library is available. Her phone might show the kid's library as available and mine will show the other library or visa versa. The libraries are not available at the same time on our iPhones. As I stated, our other devices are fine and are able to access each library when desired.
As an example, Jack's Library & Jane's Library are available under shared, seen in the inserted image. In my situation, only one of the libraries would be available even though both libraries are setup for Home Sharing.
I have tried the following (none resolved the issue):
    Close/Re-Open iTunes
Turning Home Sharing off/on for each of the iTunes Libraries
Turning Home Sharing off/on for each of the iPhones
    De-Authorize/Re-Authorize my Mac Pro
    Reboot Mac Pro

  • ITunes 9.0 home sharing with one computer with two accounts

is it possible to use the home share option using only one computer that has two iTunes accounts on it? i used the same user account for both accounts as stated but can not access the files. any info is appreciated.

You can set up Home Sharing to copy media from iTunes on one computer to iTunes on another computer, you will need to log in with the same iTunes Store account on both machin. Have a look at this article for more info
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3819
If however you want to move the entire iTunes library from one machine to another, then using Home Sharing is not the most efficient way.
    does this answer your question?

  • How do you use home sharing if Itunes library is on external hard drive?

How do you set up home sharing if IPhoto and Itunes libraries are on external hard drive?

You might want to start with a new instandce of iTunes - instructions on how to do this is on the web depending on whether you're running Windows or Appls Software.  The below URL is one site you can use.
    http://ipod.about.com/od/advanceditunesuse/ss/Multiple-Itunes-Libraries-One-Comp uter.htm
Set up your iTunes to utilize the music files on your external Hard Drive.
On iTunes pull down menu select Preferences.
Click on the advanced tab and set the iTunes Media Folder location to your External HD
Click on the File pull down menu and import the folder containing your music into iTunes.
Turn on Home Sharing on your computer  - Click on the File pull down menu and click on Home Sharing.
Turn on Home Sharing on your other device(s)
On Music on iPad or iPhone, tap on the More tab and if you set things up right, you will see your Library name.  Click on this and if things go as they should, it will connect to your library and you will see your albums, artists, playlists, sogs etc.
    Good luck.

Home Sharing is for something else - sharing media between 2 computers, not one.
There aren't any instructions for home sharing for two accounts on one computer, because you can only have itunes open in one windows user account at a time.

  • Can't copy from Home Sharing to new library on an authorized computer.

    Hi,
I'm trying to copy my itunes library via home sharing from my old PC to my Macbook pro. Both computers are Authorized. I've de-authorized and re-authorized the destination computer (the Mac) a couple of times. I was able to successfully transfer just over half of the songs. The error message i get is: _ could not be copied because the computer is not authorized. (which it is)
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thank you,
    TL

i am interested in this solution as well... i never de-authorized or re-authorized, just tried doing the same thing and it won't let me copy the music from one to another?!? my son is using my old dell laptop and he wants music off of my macbook and his mom's laptop... but we can't seem to get the music to transfer without copying the folder onto an external and then letting him copy it onto his laptop?!?!
that just defeats the whole purpose of having the SHARING feature???

  • Using home sharing as default library

I just moved my library to another computer on my network to save on hard drive sapce.  This computer is my dedicated media server for my TV.  I am using home sharing to share my library to two macs and an iPad.  I want to add music to my library for the first time since setting this up, but it's on my personal mac and I am not sure how to do it.  I would like to add the music to the library on the media server without adding it to my hard drive on my personal mac.  Is there any way to add music directly to the home sharing library without importing it into my local library?  Or, do I need to move the files to my NAS and import it on the media server itself?  My goal is to keep all music off my computer and have all files stored on the media server.  So I don't want to import then add it to the media server if possible.

I finally got the computer to download the library, 6800 songs. I had to turn off my mcafee real time scan & firewall for 15 minutes on both machines. I them hit import and for the last day and a half it was copy the library to my laptop I thought. I had one pop up at the very end that said it couldn't download one song which wasn't a big deal so I thought I answered it correctly that it was fine to skip it. It was done copying them but they aren't on the laptop, so I am now importing them again what do you suggest I do after it finishes importing this time? Again I wasn't thinking and did a select all instead of just one album but it is going much faster so I believe the songs must be on my laptop.

  • Home Sharing Windows 8 library to iMac

Currently I have my iTunes Library on a PC (Win 8.1).  Unfortunately this library is composed of media purchased using three different Apple ID's (self, wife, kids).  I have a new iMac and will eventually transfer the library to this machine.  In the interim, is it possible to share the entire library residing on the PC with the Mac using home-sharing/other or am I limited to sharing one Apple ID at a time?

    Hey geekymary,
In order to use Home Sharing in iTunes you need to have all devices using it updated to the latest version of iTunes. See this article for reference -
iTunes: Setting up Home Sharing on your computer - Apple Support
    Specifically -
    Home Sharing requires:
    The latest version of iTunes.
You can download the latest version from this page -

  • Home sharing on one pc?

My hubby and I share one PC using different desktops. I would like to set up home sharing so I can copy across some of his iphone apps, but even after turning on home sharing on both our itunes accounts (using my email and password) I can't see his itunes. So three questions...
Does home sharing only work if using two different PC's?
Why can't I open his itunes on his desktop if itunes is open in mine?
And lastly if I can't get home sharing to work, how can I access his apps?
    Thanks!

expand all the sections and pay attention to the part in "To listen to another account's music files" that says
+Repeat these steps for each account that is listening to shared music.+
+When another user of the computer has imported new music from CD, repeat steps 6 through 8 to add the music to your library.+

  • Apple TV no longer sees home sharing from one computer

I have a desktop computer with Windows 7 OS, and a laptop with windows 7 OS
Up until about a month ago I could   do home sharing  separate libraries from either computer with either one of my (2) Apple TVs
Now both Apple TVs only recognize home sharing from my laptop but not from my desktop (where of course the library is more extensive.)
I have tried rebooting my modem, router and computer, rebooting both Apple TVs, rebooting I-Tunes, de-authorize  and re-authorize my desktop computer, uninstalling and reinstalling my I-Tunes, undo home sharing and re-do home sharing my library - All on several occasions and absolutely nothing works,
I even brought one of the Apple TV boxes in and hooked it up with a micro USB as someone suggested and reprogrammed it back to factory default settings.
Does anyone have any other ideas that might possibly work to get my desktop library back on line for Home Sharing???

    Brian,
    Thanks for responding.....................
No, it just shows the Laptop computer when you click the computer tab box when you first open Apple TV - ie NetFlix, Hulu, Computers
If you go to settings and then computer - it just gives the option to turn home sharing off, it does not mention any specific computer there.

  • I can see the library on the 2nd computer using home sharing but the library will not load

I have home sharing on both of the computers, I see the library on the machine I was to bring it to but when I select it says loading but then doesn't ever bring in all the music.

  • Home sharing apps - one computer with multiple accounts & itunes libraries

Hi, Three family members (mom, dad & daughter) now have iphones. We have a single imac and each has his/her own account on the imac and his/her own itunes library.
Is there a way to share apps or sync apps from different itunes libraries with each other on the same computer in the same family? Can we do it without sharing itunes login information?
And, does Home Sharing work for apps?
    Thanks.

If you want a truly global accessible iTunes music folder to share on a Win 7 multi user account setup then I have found this to be the best way. You may find other methods online, including Apples own method of moving just the media folder but to me its not the best way. The way I configured mine allows all users to access the same iTunes library completely. No need for moving just part of the files, consolidating or duplicating files.
    1.Browser to C:/ users /your_username/
2.Right click on My Music folder and choose properties
3.Select the location tab and choose MOVE
4.Set the new location by browsing to C:/ users / public / public music
5.When asked if you would like to move files choose Yes
6.When asked if you would like to make this the default location choose Yes
    7. Log in to each user account and do the same thing as above
Now when you install or start iTunes on any of the accounts modified as above, iTunes will automatically use the Shared Folder for music, apps, etc.. No need to have duplicate files.

  • I have Windows 7 main library, iMac with additional library and Apple TV that I want to use home sharing, but windows library doesn't show as a computer on Apple TV.

I have music and movie library on an external drive connected to a Windows 7 machine. I also have home movies and other content on an iMac that I use.  I want to turn on home sharing for both and connect them to Apple TV for display, music and podcast.  They are all on the same wifi home network, but the Windows library doesn't show up on the ATV device.
I turned off all Windows firewall and I tried to configure port forwarding, but that didn't help.
I will say that this did work at some point, so a patch or an update, or some configuration change has caused it to stop workin at some point in the past six months to a year.
