Home Surveillance

I would like to set up a couple of cameras outside my house for surveillance due to some incidences that have occurred recently. I know that places like Costco have those high-quality camera systems with a hard drive recorder for like $1,200. But I would like to install something more affordable, something under $500 if possible with my Mac. What I need is to have night vision cameras but also the software is important. I need 24-hour recording. The hard drive on my iMac is nearly full so I could get an external hard drive if necessary. I also have an old iMac G3 with a 120GB hard drive running 10.3.9 Panther, so I could hook up that computer too. So what kind of cameras and software do you recommend I purchase? Thanks.

I need to design a flash widget for MySpace that reads an rss feed and just shows the latest entry. I have seen flash rss feed widgets before but they show all the listings. I need it to check every day at 1:00am for the new one and load it automatically from a third party site (feedburner). I have some knowledge of flash but none in actionscript. I use the Creative Suite CS4. I am a fast learner so please explain in depth so I get the concept.
Thank you in advance for any help.

  • Ports blocked

I have a  Verizon DSL with Model 6100 modem and a Linksys WRT160N router. Recently, I decided to install a home surveillance cameras to monitor my home while at work. I followed the instructions of setting up DynDNS...and is able to access video with computers attached to the router. But once out of the router, I got a "time out" message.  I ran the port checked and found none are reachable. I am confused whether Verizon or modem blocked these ports or the router was not properly set??
    Thank you for your help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have a very similar issue. I installed a WRT160N and am trying to remote in through it to see check a temperature device I have attached to the router.
I did all the port forwarding and everything seems to be set up correctly but cannot seem to see the router from the WAN.
I am connected to the internet using Time Warner Cable.  Do I need to set this up similar as identified for DSL?

  • IP Cam, iPhone, WPA?

I'm probably dreaming but here goes:
Is anyone aware of a reasonably priced IP cam (or other home surveillance solution) that is Mac and iPhone compatible and _also supports WPA_? I really would prefer not to downgrade to WEP just to hook up an IP cam. Many thanks in advance for your thoughts.

You may want to look at the Linksys (Cisco) WVC200 webcam. By default, the images won't work on a Mac but I changed the video format to be MJPEG and it worked via Safari and my iPhone (images didn't refresh as well on the iPhone but it worked) and it supports WPA-Personal.
It worked well overall but I ended up returning it because I was looking for something that could work with infrared. It supposedly has an infrared filter (you need an external illuminator) but I couldn't find an illuminator that worked. Cisco's support was basically non-existent for the device but other than the IR issue I had, I didn't need them.
    Hope this helps.

  • When I add media from my dLink surveillance camera, the avi files always land in audio instead of the video area. Why, and how can I get them to land as visual?

I am trying to edit some of the surveillance videos taken from our dLink camera of the dogs playing when we are not home, but when I import the .avi files, it always just goes to the audio portion (of Premiere Elements 11) and nothing shows up as video. What am I doing wrong? Please know, I am completely new at this program, since I bought it for the purpose of playing with my dLink home camera videos and haven't been able to do a single thing with them as of yet due to how they are importing. I did "get media" from my Bloggie camera to see if that worked, and it did come across as a video and not just audio, so I am not sure why the other isn't working.

ATR, just to make sure you understand me, all my video clips in my folders appear as the first frame of the video clip when I view my folders as (small, medium, large)icons instead of lists, when saved as .avi files but when saved as .mp4 files, those icons display as a graphic icon of filmstrip with a musical note on it. I do have various other methods to open with (quick time, windows media, winamp or real player) but prefer real player because I like it's quick and easy trimmer that comes along with it, since so many of my videos are just pet antics where you need to clip off the boring beginning and ends of the video.
I did go on a few of the icons and right clicked, Open With, and tried quick time and also Windows Media and it did nothing as far as how the file was saved for display, and they opened the same no matter which player I used...the actual video opens and plays right at it's first frame... but it's the way it is visually displayed in STORAGE that bugs me because it isn't immediately apparent to me what it is a video of (weddings, outside the house, pet antics)... it makes me have to actually title things and read titles where before I let it just be dates because I had the visual of that first frame as a reference. Obviously, this is a problem for unedited videos only, as anything I actually work with, I do give a title along with the date of the video.
I also just realized this seems to be the way ALL videos that are wrapped in .mp4 are displayed, as my bloggie camera's videos appear the same way. Now I know why! My other videos display as .avi's so I see the frame. Puzzle solved. Guess I'll just have to learn to live with it, as it seems to be how things display with the various formats.
Now I need to watch some tutorials to learn how this Premiere program works! It's all new to me, since this is the first time I've been able load any of my videos onto it. I haven't even been able to figure out how to trim on it yet!

  • What is the best way to secure and harden a Macbook Pro against unwanted surveillance?

What is the best way to secure and harden a Macbook Pro against unwanted surveillance? Tor, VPN, Little Snitch, etc. This would be for that latest version of Mavericks.

Nothing specific, just speaking in general. Ex-wives, governments, bad guys...anyone really. I'm just looking to make my Mac a bit more private and secure, especially when on public networks.
Governments and ex's will/may have recourse to the legal process (or in the case of the Gov they can choose to ignore the legal system if they feel like it) when they want to see something of yours, good luck hardening your Mac against that. The best way to avoid the possibility of snooping over public networks is to avoid them but if you can't then Kappy's suggestion will help.
Strong passwords (everywhere) and don't use the same password in multiple locations.
If you really want to secure your home wireless use Mac address connection authentication, do not allow unknown Mac addresses to connect. It's much stronger than a WPA password alone.

  • [SOLVED] Ring file-system for a surveillance server?

In my home, I have a (almost) dedicated (Arch-32) computer to use as a surveillance server. It continuously fetches video from a IP camera using motion and saving various GB of images and videos. Obviously, I have to manually delete older videos when the disk is getting full, but it would be better to have some kind of file-system that overrides the older files with the newer ones when it gets full.
Is there anything like that? Any recommendations?
    Thanks!
PS: If your suggestion/solution could only delete videos (not images), better.

Gracias! I didn't know about find's cmin, it is a great option. Exec gave me some problems so I ended up using more than one command. This is the script actually:
    find /home/user/videos -cmin +4320 > temp
    rm `cat temp | grep avi`
    rm temp
The only thing bad about it, is that when find doesn't produce any output, rm shows a error message because there are no arguments. I know that's not the best way, but it works.
    Any recommendation is accepted.

  • Wireless Webcam for Surveillance?

    Hello,
I am trying to find some recommendations for a good Wireless Webcam that I can use for surveillance in my home. I'd like to be able to move it around, and have it wirelessly take photos and transfer them to my computer / upload them to the web. Obviously I can't use my built-in iSight for this, so I'm looking for a wireless one that is compatible with Macs.
    Do you have any recommendations?

  • Starting a Home Server

I am wanting to set up a home server (at my house) using a mac mini and an external hard drive array. I want to use the home server for a lot of different things including but not limited to:
#1. Backing up computers to the server.
#2. Using the server to store music and movies on for streaming and remote viewing.
#3. Running my mail app on the server 24/7 so rules run instantly on all my devices.
#4. To run a video surveillance software 24/7 using cameras around the house.
#5. Remote view all my files, music and maybe videos if really needed (knowing that download speeds for music and movies might be slower).
#6. Remotely backup my servers information to a external hard drive array at my dads house.
#7. Allow my dad to backup his server to my external hard drive array the same way.
I know this seams like a lot of work and money, but we are not interested in using a cloud service for this.
I guess what I am looking for is some tips or help as i get started.
Is there any applications that people would recommend to make the process easier.
As far as a hard drive array, what do you suggest (8 Bay).
    Backup software?
Will the mac mini be powerful enough to do all this?
One last thing. I haven't boughten anything yet. I am wanting wait a few more months to see if apple releases a new mac min.
    Thanks.

Play with OS X server on your laptop but don't plan on migrating the settings is my advice. (There are tools, but you may be better off learning how it works).  Ideally servers have static IP's, unique names & it makes more sense to me to start fresh when the server arrives.
I'd test on a secondary installation of OSX so that the laptop can still be used after you stop testing OS X server.
As for offsite backup. I'd also suggest you look at Arq - it backs up to Amazon S3 or Glacier.  Chronosync may be another option - it could sync between you and your dad once you have setup a secure way to access his server.
Personally I would ignore Back To My Mac - you need a recent Mac to use it & you end up leaving your Apple ID scattered all over the place if you use it in public (ever noticed how the Apple ID gets into the iCloud settings after you login to one service). Other services like GoToMyPC, LogMeIn can allow remote access via a browser on many OS's.
However since you are also wanting full access to the file shares you may be better suited with a VPN into the network. A VPN joins your device from the internet into the local network, so you can use whatever app or services that work on the local network. So you can use VNC/ARD iOS apps like 'Screens' to control Macs. You can also use the Screen sharing application on OS X to connect once the VPN connection is running into your network. Or VNC on Linux/ Windows machines.
I don't think it is a good idea to setup the VPN for access from the Apple store or Library - you should really think about what level of access you want from these places - it's far safer to restrict to a few devices.
The VPN is probably best run from your router - if you have one that is capable. The server can run it too as a service, however it's better if you are not 100% reliant on the server for the outside access - when it goes off the remote access would go down too.
Seek out posts by MrHoffman in the server forums and there is some good advice concerning DNS on his site… you will want that working correctly if you plan to have outside access.
    http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com
P.S. You seem to want to run Mail.app for your email rule processing - is that correct?
That is a poor idea because the app needs to be running so that means the server must boot, auto login & launch Mail - that is a gaping hole for any server, it does require physical access, but it's not great for security should the server be stolen.

I wasn't suggesting that this was a feature. It is related to usability, and the usability is hindered by these distracting animations. When software doesn't behave as expected, I can say confidently as a web developer with 10+ years of experience, you have a bug. I'm sorry if the creators of these annoying animations are offended, but I'm sure there are better ways to direct their efforts.
Also, the feature feedback form is not public, so there is less transparency. This forum is public, so it is one way for users to get their voices heard, especially when "features" that we don't want are thrust on us without our consent. Isn't that just becoming the "American" corporate mentality towards consumers today?
I mean, come on, who wants this junk on their start page besides the developers who created it? Did anyone out here ask for it? Who wrote in and said, "Dear Mozilla, I switched to Firefox Start to get away from Google's annoying animated doodles. Now, I changed my mind! I want them back, but I'm too lazy to switch my homepage back, so can you please slow down my CPU and distract my mind for me when I begin my web search by copying Google and adding those annoying things to Firefox Start?"
Just like GMO foods, binding arbitration, and surveillance are "features" that Americans have just been begging for.
    Sheesh.

  • Cannot connect to 1 Ghz G4 Flatpanel on home intranet or from INTERNET.

    Here is the set up:
    1) Powerbook G4 Aluminum running Leopard 10.5.1
    2) White iMac Dual Corp Intel running Leopard 10.5.1
    3) 1 Ghz Flatpanel G4 iMac running Leopard 10.5.1
Items 1 thru 3 are HOME networked using an ACTIONTEC DSL modem which distributes intranet addresses WIRELESSLY to all computers running Airport band B/G. DSL service is per Qwest.
    4) White iMac Dual Corp Intel running Leopard 10.5.1 wireless on Office network behind firewall with appropriate ports opened and directed to target computer at home.
    PROBLEMATIC BEHAVIOR.
Prior to upgrade from Tiger, I could remote in from the office using both my desktop, or my laptop which I never have online at the same time since they share the same fixed internal IP address. This could view and control the one targeted computer behind the DSL Modem/wireless router at home. When at home, with the laptop or using the intel iMac, I could use ARD to monitor/view and control any computer in the home intranet.
Once upgraded to Leopard, ARD still works from the office into the home for the intel dual core desktop machine. However, I cannot connect to the flat panel G4 desktop AT ALL. It is visible on my list of computers and shows available (or sometimes Screen sharing avialable). It will not allow me to view with screen sharing over iChat either.
Solutions tried: just about everything I can find on this website / discussion list. Nothing works to bring this flat panel G4 online. And, other than remoting in when away from home to help my wife with her desktop, the G4, used by my teen boys, is the machine I really need to surveil.
Does any guru out there think that an uninstall reinstall of ARD files would help?
    I need this solved definitively.
    Thanks

PS: Yes, ports are open at home and at work. From inside the intranet at home I can see the G4 domed base mac but not connect. If I reconfigure the ports to target the computer from the internet it demonstrates the same behavior: I can see it listed as available but msg: Cannot connect is returned.
Sorry if that was unclear to begin with.

I recently upgrade my home Comcast wireless receiver box and lost connection to my WVC210 wireless video surveillance camera.
How can I fix this problem?

    Hi Eric,
    thanks for replying back.
    1) When you said you upgraded your Comcast Wireless box, do you mean you upgraded the firmware or got a completely new Box?
I got a complete new box.
    2) Are you trying to use the camera wired or wireless?
    Wireless
    3) Are you trying to connect the camera to the Comcast box or a router? What network equipment do you have between the Comcast and the camera?
only Comcast box. It has built in WiFi
    4) If the box is (new or different than the one you originally had) did you copy over the settings from the older one?
No i did not copy over the new settings.  But I will see If can reconnect the old wifi router and copy the old settings.
    5) What lights are showing on the on the camera? What address is showing on the LED Screen?
Only the power light is on and showing a fixed IP address 192.169.1.108

  • Wireless surveillance camera for 350mHz G4

I am looking for a wireless surveillance camera to monitor my home using my old G4. Are there any Mac solutions out there? It seems like the good cameras are only PC compatible.

I don't see why the platform should make a difference if the camera is wireless. If you can use a USB camera, any that support the USB Video Device Class will work without special drivers on a Macintosh. The Logitech QuickCam Pro supports the USB Video Device Class specification.
Panasonic has a wireless camera with a web server built-in, so you don't need the computer at all to use it. I have the older wired model, which allows you to zoom, pan, and elevate from the web interface. Although a lot of sites list them as "for PC", it's a web based interface and has no Windows-specific features.

Both are ok, but neither is really good.
In your scenario, I suggest you use Office 365 to manage all these, which is more recommended:

  • How can a family with multiple existing accounts use Home Sharing?

I'd like to use the new Home Sharing feature, but it appears to be restricted to families in which all of the family members share a single user account.
We already have separate accounts for each family member. Is there some way for us to use Home Sharing without abandoning most of our existing accounts, along with all of the purchases made by those accounts? I don't think anyone in this situation would be willing to do that.

Eh. I am not too sure since I have not messed with it much but I do have a great deal of experience with multiple accounts. Each computer can be authorized for multiple accounts. As can iPods. iPods can sync songs/videos/apps from multiple accounts as long as the computer is authorized with them. What I have set up here, is I buy my stuff I want, my parents buy what they want and so do my brothers. When my bro gets something I want I just move it to my computer. That way all our accounts are separate, but if there is something I want I can get it. Also, since the music no longer has DRM, it won't matter. It will play on any computer. What you should see is if you can just do the shared library with multiple accounts. Then if you don't have videos or such, you can get apps or music. Hope this helps!
