Home Theater centered around PC equipped with Audigy2ZS Plati

Part of the reason I built the computer the way I did was to not only make it an awesome gaming PC, but also so that when I leave college (in year) and enter the real world, it can also be the center of my home theater/entertainment system. That was the primary reason for going for the ZS Platinum over the ZS Gamer.
Now, what I want to know is this: What will I be looking for to complete a home entertainment system? I know I'm a year or so out from graduation, but it doesn't hurt to start looking now and spending time researching and comparing prices and see what's coming out soon (heck, my dad took about a year before finally buying a DVD player, and he spent that year looking at what was available, what he would want, etc.).
I want at make full use of my computer as my DVD and audio center (the video aspect is easier, and not a problem if I get an HDTV monitor), but I want to make sure that I'll get the most out of my sound system.
I have my DVD-ROM dri've connected to my Audigy2 ZS Platinum via the digital audio cable, so that connection is still purely digital. I'd like to keep the source to speaker path having as few A/D conversions as possible. With that said, what should I be looking for in a digital reciever? with a home theater speaker system (thinking of going Klipsh, but that's just one possibility that I'm aware of)? Can the ZS Platinum do Prologic IIx, or should I have it output a purely digital signal NOT already decoded? If the later, should I use the available optical output or the S/PDIF coaxial output? Remember, I'll be getting the reciever and speakers and everything else necessary based on my computer, not simply accomodating to what's out there.
While I'm fairly versed in computer audio, I'm pretty oblivious to home theater audio and such and am essentially a novice at it, while I'm more an experienced amatuer in the purely computer realm.
So, any advice on building a home entertainment/theater system around my computer's sound setup would be most appreciated.

"I have my DVD-ROM dri've connected to my Audigy2 ZS Platinum via the digital audio cable"
No need of this since datas are transmitted through IDE cable since many years now.
" With that said, what should I be looking for in a digital reciever?"
You should not look for a digital receiver if you go for a card such as the ZS platinum.
"or should I have it output a purely digital signal NOT already decoded"
Read the FAQ and you'll see that is the only way to obtain multichannel with already encoded signal.
Creative cards cannot encode signals to AC3-(DD/DTS).
"Can the ZS Platinum do Prologic IIx"
It can do prologic if you use its decoder.
"if the later, should I use the available optical output or the S/PDIF coaxial output?"
When you use digital, it doesn't matter, just choose a good quality cable.
You should know that DVD Audio cannot be output through digital outs for DRM reasons. So you'll need analog connections to listen to DVD audio.
You could also go for a DTS60 to encode the analog signals from the ZS to DTS5. signal, but you'll loose quality when playing ultra high definition audio.

  • Help with home system centered around Mac Mini server and 2 iPads.

Hey guys - sure this question has been asked ad naseum but I could not find too much relavent.   My 2008-2011 Apple suite is slowly kicking the bucket and it is time to invest in all new.
    Current setup:
    1- 4th Gen MacBook - limping along.
1 - 5th Gen Unibody MacBook - good to go.
2 - iPhone 3GS - Soon to be replaced by iPhone 5 in July,  both limping along.
    1 - 3rd Gen AppleTV
    1 - 2009 circa AirPort 802.11G,  limping along.
    1 - 2nd Gen iPad 32GB WiFi+AT&T 3G
    Proposed setup:
    2 - iPad 4th Gen
    2 - iPhone 5
1 - 3rd Gen AppleTV (stayover from previous setup)
1 - AirPort 802.11N - replacing 802.11G due to WiFi speed limitations in high density community.
    1 - MacMini Server
1- External drive to backup the MacMini
So the plan is to ditch the laptops and replace them with iPad accessing items stored on the Mini.  Combine iTunes music through importing and create one account for future purchases.  Purchasing an external drive for backup of the MacMini,  horror stories on the TimeCapsule has me steering clear of that.
In my mind I may be envisioning this to be an easy feat.  Should this be as easy as I am imagining it to be or do I need to be worried about anything else that I am not thinking about?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Can I connect my iMac's iTunes library via wi-fi to my Blu-Ray player so I can listen to the music on my computer with my home theater system?

My music library is on my iMac, located in a different room of the house than my home theater system with a decent Denon receiver and good Infinity towers. I have an iPod connector to the Denon which I can use, but the iPod has a limited library of songs, so I would like to somehow access my iMac music library and be able to play it through the home theater system. Hard wiring the components is out of the question due to length of run through several rooms of the house, no basement and cathedral ceilings. I already have my iMac and my Panasonic Blu-Ray player both connected to my wi-fi, and it seems there should be a way to connect both of them using the wi-fi. The blu-ray player is DLNA, but the Mac isn't, so that is out of the question. Is there any other way to get these components to talk to each other over wi-fi?

There is a DLNA media server called MediaLink that is designed for use with the Play Station 3.  It is not advertised as working with other DLNA clients but it usually will.  I use it to stream audio, video and pictures to a WDTV media player in my bedroom.  Works great, even supports iTunes playlists.  I believe it still has a free trial period so you can see if it works with your player.

  • Connection Error with iPod mini to Bose Home Theater System

When connecting my iPod mini to my Bose Home Theater system, it recognizes that iPod has been connected, but after the "Acquiring Signal" process, it gives me an "iPod connection error. Please re-insert iPod into docking station." I tried several times, but the result is the same.
My iPod mini has been updated with the latest software, and I did a system restore to return everything to factory defaults, but still no luck.
    Any suggestions.

Hi. What you need to do is Launch DVD Player. Go to Preferences. Select Disc Setup tab. In Audio Output under Audio in the second part of the menu, select Digital Out-Built-in-Output. Then click OK. See if this works, 'cause mine does.

  • After firmware update ipod touch not working with my Sony Home Theater DAV HDX287WC any suggestions

Is there a solution to play music from my iPod touch on my Sony Home Theater System DAV HDX 287WC after recent firmware/software upgrade? However, I am still able to play music through my ipod classic, but I am really missing the the functionality of the iPod touch with my home theater system.

    - Check to see if there is a firmware update for the theater system
Sometimes this works but sometimes an IOS update breaks compatibility.

  • How to interface SC-HT800v Panasonic Home Theater with New Samsung LED/LCD 6500 series TV

I don't see how the 14 pin cable coming out of the subwoofer will connect to the new TV or our new Blue Ray player Samsung BD-C5500.  We currently have no receiver since that was in the Panasonic VCR/DVD that we have abandoned.  Can you confirm this & also offer a suggestion of a new home theater system?  Thanks, Susan

Buy a Samsung Home Theater soundbar system. That will fit your needs perfectly not to mention you will be able to control your TV, Blu-Ray, and the sound system with a single remote control.

  • LG - 1000W 5.1-Ch. Home Theater System with Upconvert DVD/CD Player

    I have a question about the LG - 1000W 5.1-Ch. Home Theater System with Upconvert DVD/CD Player. Model: LHT854 | SKU: 8713859.
I plan on purchasing this here soon. i was wondering how long the wires are to the satellite speakers.the front 2 and center will not matter cause they will be right by tv. but the rear speakers i plan on concealing through part of my wall. i need to know how long the wires are so i can make this possible. is there anybody that can help me? its not in the specs

Unfortunately I do not know for sure but usually they provide anywhere from 25ft or 50 Ft per speaker. My JBL system came with 50ft of wire. You should be able to splice additional cable from the front and center to make them long enough if they are not already or pickup some extra speaker wire.

  • Networking with LG Home Theater System

I have an LG 47LW5600 TV and LHB976 Home Theater system. These are connected wirelessly via a Cisco Router to my Dell Laptop running Vista. I can readily access all my shared media files on the PC and display them on the TV. My problem now is that I have just bought a new IMAC running OSX 10.7.2 that is on the same network and none of the folders that I have set up to share on the IMAC will open on the TV/HT system. All of these folders are correctly listed on the TV when I go to the ‘select device or server’ page, so the TV is seeing them OK , but none of them will open. All I get is a message saying ‘a network error occurred’ with an option to either return to the home page or the server list.  I have run a network check on the IMAC and no problems were found.  Anybody out there had similar issues with this LG/IMAC combination? Would really appreciate some help with this as I intend to gradually move all my entertainment media to the IMAC from the Dell.

I believethe problem is your LG TV is probably looking for devices that support DLNA  (Digital Living Network Alliance) in order to stream or view folders, images, etc on the TV.
One easy way to add this capability to your Mac is to use a streaming media server app on your Mac.
I've reviewed the one from ElGato, which is linked above.
Let us know if that helps.

  • Please help with TV and home theater system for very large basement room....

I'm looking to get my boyfriend either a TV or home theater system for the basement.  I know he eventually wants a 3d TV.  Right now he has a set up where he has 2 tv's so he can play video games and watch sports.
The basement that the tv and home theater system will be in is large (I'd estimate at least 15 ft x 30 ft...maybe more) so I want to make sure the home theater system will be enough for the room.  We live in a ranch so basically the basement is almost the size of the house with some of it being storage.
I've started to look at products online but there are so many and technology isn't really my thing.
If anyone could help with recommendations for the home theater system and/or the tv I'd appreciate it!
    Thanks so so sooo much!!!!

What will he be using the HT system for?  Just watching sports or skipping the movie theater and watching them at home.   If you plan to watch them at home your going to be on a tight budget with the home theater system but it is possible.   Spend good money on the sub, that is one speaker you don't want to skimp out on.  With such a big space you have a lot of room to fill and the cheap subs aren't going to cut it.   You will probably need two subs as it is.  The speakers I recommend on a tight budget Polk or Klipsch.  My list includes a Denon receiver as I am a Denon fan but Yamaha, Onkyo, or Pioneer will suffice.
Here is a Option 1 will run you about 1700 with just one sub. You could always go up a model on each speaker if you feel the one sub is enough.  I like an explosion sounding like it happened in front of me so that is why I mention 2 subs.

  • Help me set up my ATV with Samsung Home theater (No HDMI in)

    Hey all,
I have a TV with one HDMI in. My home theater receiver has an HDMI out and no HDMI ins. My apple TV HDMI out to the TV HDMI in works perfectly, but obviously I want to use my surround sounds/theater. I do have an optical cable, and my receiver has an optical jack.
Any help would be awesome! Thanks!

you'll need to connect HDMI to your TV and optical to your home theatre.

  • Home Theater with Mac Mini and Mac book Air

We are currently using our Mac Mini 2GHz Intel with our Sylvania HMDI TV connected with HDMI cable. The only downfall is that our desktop has to be close to our tv. I would like to put the desktop in our bedroom and use the new macbook air for tv watching downstairs. The questions is, how would I get all of my content from the desktop down to the laptop to view on tv.
We will also be using Plex 9 when we get a bigger harddrive. Will we be able to run that on the laptop if it is located on the desktop upstairs?
A run down of how someone else has thier home theater set up using something similar would be great!
    Thanks in advance!

The Plex software bundle you download and install includes two components, Plex Media Server and Plex Media Manager. The former (PMS) needs to be running on your desktop all the time, the latter (PMM) is the client that can find the content on your network. When you run PMM on your laptop, it can see the content on any system running PMS on your network, and stream the content from there. The PMM is the 'Plex' you see in your Applications folder.
For more in depth help with setting up Plex, you should consult the Plex Forums.

  • Apple TV Optical Soundoutput not working with Sony Home Theater System

I just bought a new apple tv. The setup was pretty simple, with the exception that I cannot get the optical audio output to work with my Sony home theater.
If I switch tha optical sound cable from the apple tv to the cable tv converter box I get sound fine in the sound system, so I know the sound system works fine and is setup to take input thru the optical cable.
Any one experiencing the same problem?

    hey buddy,
How old is your Sony receiver? You have to be careful here because receivers that were made about 2 years ago, a lot of the lower range one only does HDMI pass-through. This means that your receiver only passes both the video and audio signal onto the end points, i.e takes the signal from your apple TV and outputs them onto your TV. It does not split the video and audio stream and send the audio to your home theater speakers. So make sure you plug your hdmi and optical out into the same set of input ports. On most Sony receivers, this device is under the Blue Ray class of input, where it takes video from the hdmi and the audio from the optical. If you have them on two separate class, say, HDMI to the DVD in, and optical in to the blue ray, then certainly when you set your receiver to DVD, you get video and audio on your TV speakers. And when you set your receiver to blue ray, you only get audio but not video.
