Home use KVM switch for Ultra60 , Blade 100& Intel Boxes

I have go a Ultra 60, a Blade100 and some Intel boxes at home. Tired of connecting and disconnecting the monitors and keep my desk full of mouses and keyboards. Any one know which type of KVM switch is suitable capable for these boxes and does not cost much? Thanks for your suggestion!

Hello,
<i>... Ultra 60 not easily support I still want to know if there is some option to support the Blade 100 in the KVM as well.</i>
The Ultra 60 and other systems with the single Mini-DIN connector for the keyboard with the mouse attached require a converter to be able to attach a PS/2-keyboard and -mouse. The keyboards are available for different countries with different layouts (mappings). There are DIP-switches at the keyboard, the settings are read by the system to detect the mapping of the keyboard. There are additional function keys (Help, Stop, ..., Compose, Power On/Off, ...).
A PS/2 keyboard lacks these switches and the additonal function keys. These features must be emulated by the adapter/emulator.
You can attach a PC USB keyboard (and mouse) to Suns with USB keyboard port, but these keyboards still lack the addtional function keys and the capability to "tell" the system the national mapping. If the system can't detect the locale, a standard mapping (US) is used.
The keyboard mapping can be forced when the operating system has been loaded. Review the posting by J.Keil on the Sun OS Forum about using a non-self-identifying keyboard.

Ipad2 does not change orientation. I have not used the switch for lock rotation it is used for mute

Is there a lock symbol at the top of the screen next to the battery indicator ? If so, and as you've got the switch set to notification mute, then have you checked the taskbar (the function that the switch isn't set to is controlled via the taskbar instead) : double-click the home button, slide the taskbar to the right, and it's the icon far left.
If you havn't got the lock symbol at the top then try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Cheap KVM switch for Solaris 10 on US and Intel boxes?

Hi. Any one got some idea on which kind of KVM switch is supported on Solaris 10 on UltraSparc as well as Intel boxes? I can only find those expensive ones for enterprise users, but I am just a home user, unable to afford that. Thanks for your suggestion!!

From what I can tell, containers (zones) are supported just fine on the x86/64 systems with the exception of Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 branded zones. Oh, and Linux-branded zones only work on x86/64 systems. Solaris 10 though as a non-global zone works on any S10 host OS.

  • [QEMU/KVM] Use KVM switch to switch mouse/kayboard between host and VM

I finally have my QEMU/KVM setup running and working as I want it, except for one thing. I have a KVM switch (a piece of hardware not the hypervisor ) to switch audio and video. It also offers the feature to switch mouse/keyboard between to Computers. Here is the relevant excerpt from my lsusb:
Bus 002 Device 048: ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver
Bus 002 Device 047: ID 0557:8021 ATEN International Co., Ltd CS1764A [CubiQ DVI KVMP Switch]
Bus 002 Device 046: ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver
Bus 002 Device 045: ID 0557:8021 ATEN International Co., Ltd CS1764A [CubiQ DVI KVMP Switch]
The device named "Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver" is the dongle for my mouse and keyboard. The first problem is that both devices (in both states of the switch they both appear) have the same device id 046d:c52b. This can be solved by telling qemu to identify the device by #bus.#device instead of the id. The problem is that after each switching the device number increases. This makes sense as for the system the switching process is as if the device was unplugged and plugged in in a different usb port. Therefore the device would probably be disconnected from the VM when it was assigned on the VM's startup (is there a way to add usb devices on the fly to a vm without typing an add_usb command in the qemu shell). Do you have any ideas what I could do?
EDIT: Just found about QMP. Would it be possible to save an initial condition (mouse/keyboard is on host) and fetch new devices busses after switching (udev?) and switch the saved sate? If the state is now "m/k should be on the vm" one could send qemu an adequate add command.
EDIT2: I found out that my mainboard's usb is organized using 3 usb controllers (2x2.0, 1x3.0 each with 4 ports). I want to pass one of those PCI controllers to the VM but all I get is a black screen.
EDIT3: I tried the other usb controller and it worked. Well, kind of. I moved the mouse in a circle and made a right click. Than I was not able to use the mouse or the keyboard anymore. Should I consider buying a PCI USB2.0 controller as that might be easier to forward?

This article has someinteresting information in the comments. You don't have to use a kvm switch neccessarily. I for one prefer a software solution.
Okay, so to make things clear: I do not switch keyboard/mouse. I keep them shared between both OS, using Synergy. The host OS runs a web server, and the guest OS runs a client – they exchange mouse position information, so that at any time only one of them receives ‘clicks’. This is great for both multi- and single-monitor setups.
Another story is that I have two video outputs connected to a single monitor, and I would like to switch between them without using the buttons on the monitor itself. For this, I use the I2C that is embedded within HDMI or DP.
Almost all monitors support DDC, but there are scarce apps that can make us of it. There is DDCcontrol for linux, but it is completely outdated, and failed to work with my particular monitor. So I ended up getting to know the VESA DDC standard, reading the source of that tool and several similar ones, and created a simple C program (source) that works in case of my setup. Most likely it will not work elsewhere, but it should give you a nice starting point for communicating with the monitor. The fragile spots are line 41 – you may need to change the i2c bus number the the one correct for your system, and you may need to prepare other data to send to the monitor (68 and 71) if you want to switch between other outputs than I do. Refer to the standard in order to prepare them.
As for how to change his source code to help you, I am not of much help right now as I do not know the DDC protocol. Hope that helps.

  • Best KVM Switch for iMac & PC

I have spent too much time trying to figure out the best solution for my needs, so this forum is my last resort.
I need to know if anyone out there has an iMac and a PC hooked up to a KVM switch using their mac wired or wireless keyboard & mouse.
What is the best KVM switch out there for this setup? What are people using right now that works?
My ultimate goal is to have my iMac, laptop pc, and tower pc that has it's own 21" wide screen display, all linked to the same keyboard and mouse so I can switch back and forth between the three using a hot-key.
    Someone please help...I've become desperate.
    Thanks.

I use one by IOGEAR for my PC and Linux server and it works great.
Barbara, I would love to know how to get RDC to work, but I have yet to. I will start another thread about this someday, but RDC always asks for a password and I do not have a password set up on my WinXP machine.
I agree that it would probably be best, but since I have not actually gotten it to work, I can't say for sure.

  • Can anyone recommend a good KVM switch for a PC/Mac pair?

I want to run my Mac and PC off of the same USB keyboard and mouse and use the same monitor. Naturally, to fix this problem I bought the first KVM switch I could find (how different could they be?) which was a Belkin variety. Worked ok right at first, but by day 2 I was having switching issues - the monitor kept switching between the two endlessly, though the USB seemed to switch ok. The Mac refused to sleep, though. I'm taking the Belkin switch back and trying something new.
Has anyone had any success with a KVM switch? If so, what flavor?
    Thanks.

Personally I love my IOGEAR USB KVMP.
I own 2, both of them are 2 port units
Best part of IOGEAR is they come with all cables & power supply.
Worst part is most models dont have Audio support, so every machine needs their own speakers.
The IOGEAR USB KVMP Miniview #GCS102U http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&Item=GCS102U that I own has ports in front for USB keyboard & USB mouse, in back are 2 USB (A/B) ports with 2 male 15pin VGA ports to connect the 2 computers, also the main monitor port has female 15pin VGA port to connect the Monitor. Cool part is you can use a DVI-VGA adapter without problems which is nice if you LCD or CRT monitor.
2 other USB ports on the back let you share other devices like Printer and Scanner. I am able share my keyboard, trackball, monitor and printer with my newer MDD Dual G4 and an Intel Celeron 2GHz PC I have that runs Linux.
My other KVMP drives 2 other older Macs, a BWG3 and a USB upgraded PM7600.
The front has a button that you push there is less than 2 second delay for monitor and no software needed.
The USB ports are all USB1.1 if I recall so the style is fairly universal if out of date.
they also have a 4port version which I might get http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&Item=GCS634U
Although I have not used one, http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=255941 I love the look of the new Belkin Flip. Apple sells them on the AppleStore for $80 and are touted for PC & Mac mini, although I dont see why i cant be used for any Mac. Its cool feature is it does offer Audio Support too and far as I know it has its cables too. I think it is USB2.0 since its a new product. http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/6314001/wo/0I7xL JNdSeJb3Do7Faa1XvHguGA/1.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.0.3
    good luck.

  • [GeForce 6] Video distortion using KVM switches

When connected through a KVM switch the video quality from my main computer using a 128mb GF6800 from MSI becomes distorted, blurry, and the text very hard to read.  However, my second computer using a GF4 4200ti looks fine.
I thought it was a defective switch but I've tried 2 kvm switches from different manufacturers with different cables both with the same result.
Both computers are at 1280x1040 resolution, 60Hz refresh rate... changing the refresh rate nor the resultion helped.
However, when my main computer is connected directly to the monitor the video quality is fine... which makes me completely lost.  Is there anything I can do besides beating everything with a baseball bat??

was hoping there'd be a way to clear things up after getting use to using 2 computers at once
unfortunately can't fit an oldstyle monitor on the desk where i just moved to and can't afford another lcd :/

  • [SOLVED]Keyboard layout messy after wake up or using KVM-switch

After waking up the computer from suspension or using my KVM-switch, the keyboard layout is pretty messed up.
    "qwertzuiopü+" becomes ".,ñpyfgchl"
    "asdfghjklöä#" becomes "aoeuidrtnsḉ"
    "<yxcvbnm,.-" becomes "<-qjkxbmwvz"
I know the origin of the problem is that XKB is only set by my .xinitrc. But how can I bypass this? How can I set XKB with the German layout by default?

If you mean you want to send video from another computer to the iMac display,
the answer is: NO WAY. iMacs have no video input; the mini-DVI is output-only.
If you want to send iMac video to a shared external monitor, it might work -- if
you can find a KVM switch for a USB keyboard & mouse.

  • Help create VLAN for home use.

I use Cisco switch SG300 and SG200 series. I set my home network as attach picture.
I want set up VLAN with these condition
1.Every port can connect to internet through ADSL router.
2.VLAN10( Home alarm and IP camera ) can access by internat, connect by access point and PC file server
3.Every port can connect the PC file server
I am new for network and fail to try setup myself and not understand static route.
    Thank you.
    Jarey
    [email protected]

    Hi Jarey,
Are you sure you want to do this on the switch as opposed to the router? Are you going to use static IP addresses for the vlans or do you want your router to issue DHCP?
To proceed, using the switch for inter-vlan routing, make sure the SG300 is in layer 3 mode.
    1. If you are currently in layer 2 mode, open a CLI connection and issue command:
    set system mode router
Take note that this will delete your current config and the switch will reboot.
    2.  Create the vlans on your switch under VLAN Management -> create vlan
    3. Go to IP Configuration -> ipv4 interface and assign each vlan a static IP for the switch in the subnet for the new vlan
    4. Vlan Management -> Interface settings. I would leave all the ports as trunk ports, or change the ports to trunk if you have previously changed them.
    5. Vlan Management -> Port VLAN membership. Assign your vlans to the appropriate ports.
    6. When everything is all plugged in, you should be able to see the switch created static routes for you already under IP Configuration -> IPV4 static routes. Make sure all your subnets are there and are showing route type local
    7. You may need to add a route such as 0.0.0.0 with the next hop being your router
At this point, you should be up and running, with all vlans connected to each other and to the internet.
If you want to restrict access across the vlans, you'll have to create access control lists.
You need to first create an ACL (Access control -> IPV4 based ACL) and give it a name. then go over to IPV4 based ACE where you put the actual access control rules.
This is a sample set of rules I made, it will block all access between two subnets (each vlan you created above will have to be its own subnet) and allow certain traffic such as 3389 - remote desktop, etc. You'll need to customize based upon your needs and subnet IPs. So for ex, to allow the Xboxes to access the file server, rather than any - any, you put the xbox subnet or specific IPs as the source, the file server as the destination, and the ports used as source ports. Remember to make the converse of the rule as well.
Then, go to Access Control -> ACL bindings and bind the access control list to the applicable ports.
Hope that helps, good luck with your set up.
    Best,
    David

  • KVM switch and Mavericks don't play well together

I upgraded to Mavericks yesterday, and started having this very annoying problem with my KVM switch, which used to work fine with Mountain Lion. I've been using this KVM switch for my mac mini and PC, in order to share my keyboard and mouse, very stably for several months.
Basically, when switching back and forth, there is a chance that ALL the peripheral devices would stop working in Mavericks. This includes my apple bluetooth keyboard and the magic touchpad, which are not related with USB (or maybe the bluetooth chip is still hooked up via USB inside).
For some reason, screen sharing stops working too, althought the IP I was trying to connect to was the ethernet port.
If I try to do a shutdown -r now via SSH, the system tries to shut itself down, but would get stuck with a spinning animation on the screen.
There is nothing in the system log, no error message.
My KVM switch is an IOGear GCS42UW6. Connected USB devices are: Apple USB keyboard and Logitech G500 mouse.

10.8 worked well with my Mac Mini (2009) connected to IOGEAR KVM model GCS1108. My mouse is from Redmond and the keyboard is a Goldtouch.
Mavericks has a problem with my KVM switch as well. It seems to be a USB problem.
Case 1: The Mini's video is connected to the KVM switch -- mini DVI port to DVI. If the KVM USB cable (known good) is connected, the Mini chimes at boot but no grey Apple logo appears. LCD remains blank white. Boot does not progress.
Case 2: The Mini's video is connected to the KVM switch, as before. If the KVM USB cable is NOT connected, the Mini chimes at boot, the grey logo appears, and boot proceeds normally. Video is fine. I  then connect the KVM USB cable to the Mini and use keyboard and mouse. KVM switching works as expected.
If the KVM USB cable is NOT connected but a keyboard and mouse are connected directly to the Mini, the boot sequence is normal. Video works.
The problem is not the hardware, all of which worked well with 10.8 (Mountain Lion). I would downgrade if Apple made 10.8 available from the App Store.

  • KVM switch w/ usb i/o for keyboard mouse doesn't work [Solved]

    Edit:
This problem appears to have magically disapeared.  I'm still not sure why it happened or why it has ceased.
    Hello Everybody,
I'm not sure why this is happening, but I've got a KVM switch that used to get "automagically" detected as "a no-brand KVM switch" on boot-up that has ceased working.  I don't get this "no brand KVM switch" detected on boot-up anymore, but I can use the VGA part of the switch, at least, however the keyboard and mouse don't work unless plugged directly into the computer.
Below I've attached the result of
    dmesg | grep --context=3 usb
    dmesg | grep kvm
    returns no result.
The most signifcant thing seems to be:
usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 7
    usb 1-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71
    usb 1-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71

usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 10
usb 1-2: device not accepting address 10, error -71
hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 2
I've googled this, and somewhere it was suggested this mean the usb device is not drawing power.  The only thing that has happened that I can imagine as being the culprit between function/dysfunction here is that there was a power outage (circuit breaker tripped), and though my computers were on battery-backup, the monitor is not.  I don't suppose that this could have messed up the switch?
Note this problem is uniform across 3 computers, 2 which have recently run a system update, but the 3rd has not recently run an update, this is not an Xorg problem, "K and M" don't work in either console or X.
Any help would be appreciated.  Below as, mentioned previously, is the output of
    dmesg | grep --context=3 usb
included on the off-chance that someone sees something significant there.

i'm sorry, but this is all software related then. if you haven't already, run disk utility a few times to try to correct the error. otherwise, you should back up your info immediately if you can. if you can access another mac you can do that with firewire target disk mode. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583. the other mac has to have built-in firewire. then you can try to repair the directory with a third party utility like diskwarrior or techtool pro. if it cannot solve the problem, or if you do not want to spend the money on the software, you have no choice but to erase and install your operating system. do you already have your info backed up?? it's always a good idea. keep us posted as to how it's going for you or if you have any further questions. • Recommendations for DVI KVM Switches?

I wish to share the same USB wireless keyboard/mouse, and monitor between my Macbook and PC.
Has anyone tried this with a DVI KVM switch, and can you recommend which one to use? They're a little pricey, so I'd like to get comments from actual users if possible...
    Thanks
MacBook, Black, 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I've gone thru several between work (2 offices) and home and after using different models and having them die or exhibit difficulties with new larger monitors, I've been happy with the Belkin KVMs that I've had for the last couple years. But I foresee a possible problem with the wireless part. I think you'd better put out a call for reports on success/foibles using a KVM and wireless mouse/keyboard. What I'm not sure about is how the computer will react to losing contact with wireless and then getting it back again.

  • KVM switch vs. VNC for MacPro

I have a MacPro and use it as my primary computer. I have need to occasionally access software, residing on my G4, that requires Classic. I am investigating the best way to do this. I've done research and read topics in this forum but have additional concerns and questions.
I'm considering buying the Miniview Micro USB Plus KVM Switch by Iogear since, from my Internet research, it seems to be one that plays well with Mac hardware and does it at a great price. If others using this switch can confirm that it will work for my setup I would be most appreciative.
However, I read in a KVM discussion in the MacPro forum that using VNC (virtual network connection??), a software solution to accessing resources on another computer from the MacPro, is another viable method to access software and data on the G4. This solution doesn't require a KVM switch.
These computers are at my home. Our internet service is cable DSL and we use a router to serve it to multiple computers (PCs and Macs) in the home. It seems feasible that I could use the VNC solution, but I am not familiar with this so I don't know how to find out more and determine if it will work on my home network.
Any advice on these options would be most appreciated.

Can you share a link on the Apple site or elsewhere that would give me a good overview, and specifically for set up for the "remote access via broadband connections" you reference?
There really isn't one although here's the ARD link…
    http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/
… for you to look over. While it's actually intended to be use on a LAN it works extremely well over broadband lines. The trick with this, as with most broadband interconnectivity, is having control over your broadband modem. If you have that then you can pretty much do as you please. Problem is, most ISPs don't like that.
I mostly use it to manage client servers.
Also, I'm intrigued by your statement "While I can use my display as a KVM." How do you mean? Is this without a KVM switch, but with some feature of your monitor?
Well… my Dell 2405 24" display has a multiple input ports (DVI, VGA, component etc) to which I can connect each computer. Right now I have my Mac Pro connected to DVI and my Mac mini connected to VGA. Additionally, there's an in-built USB2 hub and all I need to do to use it as a KVM is to connect my mouse and keyboard to the USB hub. To change video I just use the input selector on the front. As for USB, I just change the uplink to the computer I want to use.
While not as pretty as hitting a button on a proper KVM it's quite a deal cheaper. I do however prefer to use ARD.
