Home wireless network help!

Ok... So I recently moved to a new house, and moved my Internet service. Im with AT&T and I had DSL. I was supposed to have next day installation because I work from home and take classes from home and every day I go without Internet costs me money. However, they told me that DSL was not available in my area. I ordered Uverse and I ended up having to wait a week and a half for them to install that, only to find out that the couldn't because the cable box is too far away from my house... But they said I could get DSL. Anyway, long story short, it's been two months, I had to drop two classes which has cost me almost $3,000 alone, and I haven't had any income because I can't work.
I have Internet now, however the way AT&T set it up mean i had to get a new modem. My old set up involved a 2wire router/modem connected to a time capsule in bridge mode. It worked like a dream and I was able to have my laptop, desktop, ps3, 360, wii and two iPhones connected to it all at once with no problems. Now I have a motorola modem connected to the time capsule. All of my devices are detecting my wifi network, but non of them can connect. The ps3 times out trying to obtain an ip address, the phones connect to the network but continue to use 3G, and my laptop gives me the "another device is already using this ip address" message.
What do I need to do to get everything up and running again? I'm sick of typing and browsing with my iPhone and not having Internet. In my case time really is money... Anything any of you can offer to possibly help would be greatly appreciated....

Resetting the Time Capsule back to factory defaults will not affect your backups in any way, as the reset only affects network configuration settings, not the Time Capsule disk.
I'm not sure if you will be able to make much progress without an internet connection, but if you want to try, here is the sequence of events:
If it's not already, connect the ethernet cable from the modem directly to your Mac
Open your browser and type in 192.168.1.254 into the address bar and press Enter. This should bring up the modem configuration pages, which you have already seen.
Click on the Advanced tab/label on the left
Click on the PPP Location tab/label
Select the option for "PPP is on the computer (router)"
Click Save and the modem will restart with the new settings
Important...if you ever need to return the modem back to its new, out of box configuration, hold in the reset button on the back of the modem for 8-10 seconds, then release. It will restart with original default settings.
Connect the ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN (circle of dots icon) port on the Time Capsule.
On your Mac, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon
Connect Using = PPPoE
Enter your user name (probably your email address with the provider) and password. Confirm password.
+Important...leave the Service Name area completely blank+
Connection = Always On
Disconnect if Idle = Never
Click Update at the lower right and the Time Capsule will restart in 25-30 seconds.
You may need to restart both the modem and Time Capsule again. With no internet connection, you won't be able to test for connectivity, but when the service comes back on, you should have an internet connection on the Time Capsule. Post back on your progress.
You will probably need to reset Time Machine to get backups going again as follows:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
Open Time Machine
Click Select Disk
Click your Time Capsule to highlight it
Click Use for Backups

  • I need help adding my printer to my home wireless network

My printer was shut down for several months. When i turned it on it was not longer connected to my wireless network. It recognizes my SSID and that of other wireless networks in the area. But I cannot get it connected to my home wireless network.
When I enter my passphrase it returns error "passphrase invalid." If I use the Push Button or PIN set-up I get the error message "WPS timed out."
I have followed the instructions useing the HP Printer set-up disc. It worked on one computer today (it printed a wireless network test report). But, then I could not find the printer on the network later. I also noticed the report does not show a IP address for the printer.
I have also been online with my internet provider and we changed my passphrase 11 times and the printer never recognized any of them. I am operating another printer wirelessly on the same system. By the way, shutting the other printer down did not seem to work. But, they both worked on the network previously.I have also added and deleted the printer several times.
The printer I am trying to add is a HP Photosmart Premium Web C309n-s
I am using a Windows 7 Operating System 64-bit on my laptop and Windows XP 32 bit on the other computers on my home wireless network,
    Please help.

  • Home Wireless Network & Backup

    Hello-
Can anyone suggest some helpful resources (e.g., websites) for configuring a home wireless network where different users (e.g., family members) can backup their files via the network instead of having to physically connect their computers to a separate, external drive? Thanks much.

The new Apple Airport Extreme wireless router provides for this - connecting an external USB drive to the router for saving data and/or for backup purposes by anyone with access to the wireless network.

  • Home wireless network trouble

I got a new wireless router, Netgear WPN824 from Newegg, a refurbished product. I set up a home wireless network using the online manual on the Netgear website. The router works well for the wired setup. But I could not connect to wireless.
My wireless network shows up on the list of available wireless networks. I can connect to other wireless networks such as that of my neighbour's. I tried connecting to my network using both unsecured and secure WEP / WPA modes. Except once, I could never connect. That one time, as soon as I could connect and verify that I was indeed connected I thought the problem was resolved and so shutdown my system to see if i could connect again - alas, same trouble again. I use NetworkManager to connect, and here's the output for two networks - jaydoc which is my home network, and linksys, that of my neighbour's to which i can always connect.

Is the wireless router i got a dud, being refurbished i took my chances and maybe i wasn't so lucky..! Or is it something wrong in my network settings..? I tried shutting down everything and then turning the modem, then the router and finally the PC without the ethernet cable connected. Still I am unable to connect.
Any help is deeply appreciated. I am a total newbie in networking...!

So if its still a DHCP problem, it seems to be affecting only the wireless part. How can I make wireless use the same DHCP servers as the wired..? Or is there something else wrong here..?

After upgrading to OSX 10.8.5, my MacBook does not detect any wireless nertworks. My iPad and iPhone work fine, my router has been rebooted, WiFi is turned on, and the ethernet connection is how I am writing this message to you via broadband. There are a half dozen wireless networks in range (according to my iPhone) but the MacBook cannot find the router I am sitting next to. Any ideas on how to correct this issue?

It appears an SMC reset was required:
HT5815 I've just done the 10.8.5 update on my MacBook Pro end of 2008, and WiFi don't work after reboot... Impossible to activate it...
Here is your other post: MacBook can't see my home wireless network after upgrade to OSX 10.8.5
If you reply to it and marked it "solved", perhaps with a link to that post (copy and paste it, or just say you performed the SMC reset) it will help others find a solution. Thanks!

  • I have 2 macs and 2 PC laptops in my home wireless network.  Can I use the Airport/Time Capsule hard drive to back up all 4 machines?  I know that I will have to use different back up software on the PCs, but is it possible over the wireless network?

I have 2 macs and 2 PC (Windows 7) laptops in my home wireless network. (The iMac is hardwired via ethernet to the Airport/Time Capsule; the others are wireless connections using Airport).  I want to use the hard disk drive in the Time Capsule as a network backup drive for all 4 computers.  Is this possible?  Could someone help me by telling me how to configure it?  I know I will have to use different backup software in the 2 Windows 7 Laptops?  Do I need to use the Windows backup software, or can I use a third party program like Acronis True Image?  Thanks in advance for the help

It is your fault, pondini.. all your fault.
I read of all the things that go wrong restoring Time Machine backups.. particularly stupid things like mail, photo libraries don't go back.. etc. And looking through the incredible number of issues people have here, when their Mac finally takes a dive how hard it is to restore.
I restored a test hard disk from a TC.. and it takes ages and ages to even make up its mind to start.
I worked in computer support for ages, but not Macs.. so my experience is ghost.. ghost images.. on large commercial server setups, can stream restore to multiple computers at once.. even doing it computer by computer the image is simple as network boot to restore. But ghost went the way of Symantec.. sigh!! And was destroyed.
A product like clonezilla, Free linux boot cd.
    http://lifehacker.com/5078397/clonezilla-backs-up-and-restores-your-disks
Can backup a Hard disk in just about any format.. yet to try it on a Mac to a TC.. but I will. Boot from CD.. instead of your lost Lion partition which no longer exists (because the hard drive had to be replaced) and the DVD they no longer give you, and restore the entire hard disk in a couple of hours .. to the exact image at the point you made the clone.. in any format, with any partitions.
My bet is that it will kill TM .. but you could be right.
It is just the prospect of all those permission changes, photos and mail libraries etc that worry me.

  • Apple devices will no longer recognize home wireless network

After returning from a week's vacation, I am having difficulty getting my Apple devices (iPads, iPhones, MacBook Pros, etc.) to connect to our home wireless network. I have tried resetting the router and modem numerous times, restarting the devices, resetting the IP address on the MacBook Pro to no avail. At time I do show a connection to the network, however, I cannot access internet, email, etc. This problem also seems to be affecting ALL of our Apple devices, including the ones we left at home. The PC laptop connects just fine, so it does not seem to be a router issue.  Any thoughts?

Have you called the ISP's tech support line and asked for help?

  • Strange - Home wireless network ok, no access Public networks

Ok, I'm not getting this, and I've been around computers for some time.
Got my B570 'round September last year. Worked great on home wireless network ( Brighthouse networks in Florida, with Ubee Wireless modem running Lightning or 40mb.)
Had to move to new place offering a house offering of wifi, had a bear getting that up, but finally did.
Here's the q, and I've seen this on an HP laptop running Vista, but that one died and I got this one.
Go to Starbucks, Panera's, Dennys or just about any other public place, and I can see the routers and even connect, but can't get anywhere on the internet. I get either a limited or no internet, or identifying, but that's it. I know that their router is working because i can make the wifi connection on my phone and browse no problem, and I see other patrons with different computers logged in at the same time.
McDonalds, I can get in, and soon as the network connection comes up, browser will pop up and allow me to accept McD's access rights page and I can connect. I know that Denny's has one too, but it doesnt pop up, and ( I know that this will sometimes happen too ) if I try to connect to a website, sometimes the local accept page will pop up, but usually not for me.
I have Google Chrome as my primary web browser, but even if I try to bring up via IE, no go.
I can connect to the internet via my droid phone usb wired or just wireless, but don't like that to be a regular solution.
I've already tried to update the wireless driver ( Broadcomm ), but computer tells me that i'm up to date. Enabled then re enabled. Flush DNS didn't help either, ipconfig / release and renew didn't do it either. Using Comodo Internet Security, and turned it off, even exited out of program and that didn't help either.
Today was an interesting day. went to Denny's thinking I'd get some work done, and couldn't get logged in. Went to Fedex Store to get some printing done, and logged in right away. Came home and can log into the communities public ( fee based ) network and can log right in. Looked in my bag and found a usb wifi dongle I had used for the HP when the wifi on it died out, but didn't try that yet. I'd rather not, I'd rather find out why the wifi on this laptop seems to be finiky with who's networks I'm using.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    hi Ronjie,
The issue you're facing is a very strange issue. From what i gather ist begging to choose the network it wants to work with. I may need more time to look inot his to see if it is a harware issue. But i would like to try something though. You may want to uncheck the IPV6 in ur Wireless network properties.
To do that you will have to go to your "Network sharing centre" > Click on "Change adapter settings"  on the left hand panel > Highlight "Wireless network Connection" > Right Click "Wireless network Connection" and select on "Properties". Be sure to uncheck the "Internet protocol version 6 (TCP/IPV6)". Then click on and try to reconnect.
Let me know how it goes..
    Regards

  • Setting up HP Officejet 6500A; not sure how to connect to web w/ home wireless network

I have a small home wireless network.  I set the printer up today but it says that I must connect to the internet (fax part is working).  The only desktop I have, I keep off most the time and just use my laptop (which is for work so I can't set the printer up to this).
Is there a way to connect the printer directly to my router?  They are only a few feet from one another; however, I have no clue how to do it and the instructions manual didn't tell me much.  Do I need a phone line?  What would I use to connect the two?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Use an Ethernet cable, available in any tech store, online or even Target will have them.
Plug it into the back of the printer and router.  You should be able to add the printer to your laptop.  Let me know what operating system you have and I can help.

  • Suddenly can't connect to home wireless network

All of a sudden I can't connect to my home wireless network - always has worked perfectly.  Now I get a box asking for the password, and although I type it in correctly it keeps saying "incorrect password."  I thought I'd delete it and re-establish it, but it doesn't show up in the Managed Network settings.  Any ideas what is going on?

On the problem computer, go to Control Panel > Printers and delete all instances of the printer.
Next, print a Wireless Network Test from the front of the printer (Network menu).  Note the printer's IP address.
    1. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to your network. Verify that you can access the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address before continuing.
    2. Click >> Start >> Control panel >> Printers.
    3. Click the Add a printer
    4. Select Local printer
    5. Select Create a new port and select Standard TCP/IP Port and click Next button.
    6. Under Device type, select TCP/IP Device. Under Hostname or IP address, enter the printer's IP address. Click Next.
    7. Select Hewlett-Packard from the list of manufacturers and select and select your printer model. Click Next.
If your printer model was not listed, then select Have Disk, browse the HP CD that came with your printer and select the first file that starts with hp and ends with inf. Click Open then OK. Select your printer model. Click Next.
    8. If you are asked, use the currently installed driver.
    9. It will ask for the Printer name -- enter a new name or use the existing one. This will be the name of the printer that you select from other applications.
    10. You may be asked to share the printer. Choose NO.
    11. The Print Test Page box appears. Go ahead and print it.
    12. Click Finish.

  • MacBook Pro only can't find home wireless network

    Hey guys!
I purchased a 15" retina MacBook Pro by July. It brought Mac OS X Lion with it: I had no problems.
However, more than a month later I upgraded to Mountain Lion, and I started to have the same problem ALWAYS: sometimes I would be connected to my home wireless network, perfectly fine. However, after shutting down, sleeping, etc, whenever I would turn the Mac on again, it wouldn't find my home network wireless anymore, but it would find e.v.e.r.y and other network available. Also, my phone, iPad, and every other equipment, would find it and work perfectly. After several restarts and wake ups from sleeps, the Mac would eventually magically find it and stay connected for an unpredictable amount of times (sometimes it could find it continuously for some days after some sleeps, and sometimes it wouldn't be found again after some hours of it being found again (assuming the computer went to sleep)). But if I try any other of the available networks it connects with no issue!
And I've been in this game constantly! I've tried (almost) all the Mountain Lion wifi-related posts in the Internet, but none seems to solve it.
I have only found a few posts with my related issue, which I recall: the Mac won't find, ONLY, my home network, while any other equipment can, and it can magically find it occasionally, lasting its connection until the next sleep or shut down.
    Help would be really appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Juan

Hum, good point, the problem may lay with the router compability. My sister, who has ML as original OS has been having the same problem of not finding only our home network, so it seems that the problem lies on Mountain Lion compatibility with the router. I just restarted the router several times and we both got internet at the same time. The question is, as always, how long will it last until it won't find it again.
    Now, focusing on the router.
Here, in Portugal (as for the rest of the world I don't know), the Internet provider companeis offer their own modems. Not only that, as those modems are both: modems and routers ( http://imageshack.us/scaled/landing/149/ofibrasjaestaabombar.jpg ).
After writting the above, and re-reading what you said, you lighted me up the idea of entering the modem domain (you know, that url you put and have access to every definiton of the router?)
Well, the password "type" was selected to "WPA and WPA2". What I did was selecting "WPA2" only. So far it seems that it is working. I'll do some restart tests etc etc and I'll let you know! (Maybe the problem may persist, but I'll only know days from know as it may seem, for know, that it is solved.)
I'll let you know, and thanks for the help so far, Sig!

  • Unable to join home wireless network

One of my iPhones wont join my home wireless network.  Keeps saying password is incorrect.  Two other iPhones, 3 iPads, laptop all join no problem.  Tried resetting wireless settings, did not work.

I'm having the same problem, but I have an iPhone 4 and mine won't connect to any network. It always says "unable to connect to network". I looked through all of the support forums but all I can find are people saying that its the firmware and that Apple has to fix it in an update or have to switch it out, and my warranty has expired. All of those forums are also from 2009. I don't want to pay for unlimited Internet, so I new this to be fixed. Please help if you at all possibly can.

  • Can't get two same printers (MG5420) work on same home wireless network

I bought another MG5420 this week and tried to setup it on my home wireless network.  It is on wireless network.  However, canon printing utility seems couldn't find it and it always go to the original one(old).  How do I make both of them work on the same time?
Thanks for your help in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Canon Support,
Thanks for your quick response. I am using Windows 7 and canon printing utility was newly installed on this pc.  If I connect this printer to the PC with USB cable, it works fine(of course). I used printer panel to setup wireless connection through WPS and it seems fine(wireless connection signal on the printer is solid blue). If you need any more details, please let know.  Thanks,.

  • Home wireless network in China using Airport Express ?

I am going to be living in China with my Macbook. I will be bringing my Airport Express with me.
I would like to know whether it is appropriate to connect up my Airport Express to a Chinese cable modem to obtain wireless internet access at home.
Or is it a very different system used in China for home wireless network.

Many, but not all of the same wireless channels in the US are allowed in China. See this Wikipedia Document for some information.
As to whether you will connect using ethernet or PPPoE, etc., that will depend on the provider that you choose.
