Homehub 2.0

Hi can anyone help me PLEASE I have a bt homehub 2.0 which works fine.I have just got a laptop which works fine also on the wireless part of it.So you are asking yourself is wrong.Well I live in a very non standard construction bungalow with dodgy wiring lots of solid brick walls and a metal roof, well I think you get the picture. The internet enters the building at one end which as the crow flies is about 100 meters from the other end of the house. My wireless connection does not even take me halfway without going completely. Can somebody please reccomend something that will definitely work,as I have had different people telling me all sorts of things. All I want is to be able to use my laptop where ever I want in my house. One other thing is I am not very technically minded so I need all the help I can get.
Many Thanks.

Hello,
Well 100 metres is a long way to get a Wireless signal:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11
http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/products/wireless/prowireless_mobile.htm
You just aren't going to be able to make it reach.
So your choices are:
1: Move the Homehub nearer your normal surfing point using a phone extension.
2: Run a CAT5 (aka ethernet) cable from the HomeHub to somewhere nearer your normal surfing point. Then use a Wireless Bridge to allow you to surf wirelessly.
3: Use a Wireless High Gain Antenna on a ADSL router which allows external aerials (not using a HomeHub).
4:  Try using Networking over Mains adaptors aka Homeplug/Powerline Network. If your house wiring is shot, this may not be an option
If it were me, I would be tempted to either lay CAT5 cable or try borrowing some Powerline adaptors/Homeplugs and see if they can cope with your dodgy wiring. Options 1 and 3 can get very expensive.
Hope this helps

  • Question regarding homehub and Open reach router -...

    Hi all,
I had infinity installed earlier this month and am happy with it so far. I do have a few questions regarding the service and hardware though.
I run both my BT openreach router and BT Home hub from the same power socket. The problem is, if I turn the plug on so both the Homehub and Openreach Router start up at the same time, the home hub will never get an Internet connection from the router. To solve this I have to turn the BT home hub on first and leave it for a minute, then start the router up and it all works fine. I'm just curious if this is the norm or do I have some faulty hardware?
Secondly, I appreciate the estimated speed BT quote isn't always accurate, I was quoted 49mbits down but received 38mbits down - Which I was happy with. Recently though it has dropped to 30. I am worried this might continue to drop over time. and as of present I am 20mbits down on the estimate . For the record 30mbits is actually fine and probably more than I would ever need. If I could boost it some how though I would be interested to hear from you.
    Thanks, .

Just a clarification: the two boxes are the HomeHub (router, black) and the modem (white).  The HomeHub has its own power switch, the modem doesn't.
There is something wrong if the HomeHub needs to be turned on before the modem.  As others have said, in general best to leave the modem on all the time.  You should be able to connect them up in any order, or together.  (For example, I recently tripped the mains cutout, and when I restored power the modem and HomeHub went on together and everything was ok).
Check if the router can connect/disconnect from the broadband using the web interface.  Leaving the modem and HomeHub on all the time, go to http://192.168.1.254/ on a browser on a connected computer, and see whether the Connect/Disconnect button works.

  • Upgrade from Homehub 2 to Homehub 3

Just wanted to rant and blow off some steam.
Ive had two Homehub 2's so far as one completley shutdown and the 2nd just keeps dropping wireless signal and lagging.
Usually pressing the reset button resolves this for a day or so.
The blue indicator lights are solid, and even tho ive replaced the wires and microfilters etc.
Nothing near the router to affect it either.
Ive put up with this for a while and now that the homehub 3 is now available I thought how hard would it be to ask Bt to assist a customer !
After my 1st e mail I got a call from an oversea's call centre who passed me to a uk help centre.
As soon as the woman realised im under contract until Dec 11 she said all i Can do is pass you onto the techy dept.
If you were out of contract then I could help you, she said before transferring me.
After a while I was cut off.
No problem I thought they have my details and will call me back.................... well no they didnt.
I e mailed again and got a call from the techy dept from a guy who I confirmed what was happening to my broadband connection.
He told me that he had the homehub 3 and it was not as good as the tv adverts made it out to be and would just have to put up with the drop outs. He could only sell me a homehub 3 for just under £50.
I asked for a replacement homehub2 and he said that would not make a difference.
I did say well I may have to look at other ISP providers and he told me the date when I was out of contract and that bt would provide me with a mac code if required. And ended the call.
To top it all off I got an e mail from a Bt customer service follow up asking for my feedback !
Well feedback is what they got !
Ive been with bt for many many years and would expect a lot more customer service than the feeling I got which was we have you in a contract , so there !
    Rant over................

    Hi.
It's only a few months till the end of your contract. if so there is the possibilty to renew on terms that are more advantageous to you.
Lower monthly payment/Free months, Maybe a new hub.
When your contract is due for renewal, you hold the upper hand, be firm but polite and use a bit of negotiating skill to get some of what you want.
Wireless can be terrible, I have a toughened glass door a few feet away from my router and if the door is open /ajar the glass deflects the wireless signal, so now have wired it up.

  • I have a macbook pro and use BT homehub 3.  can't work out how to connect my time capsule. can anyone help, thanks.

I have a macbook pro and use BT homehub 3.  can't work out how to connect my time capsule. can anyone help?  thanks

Just need to plug the TC in to the hub in bridge mode.. do not try and bridge the homehub.. it is not possible with the setup BT uses.
To bridge the TC.. plug it directly into a computer by ethernet.. no other connection to the TC or the computer.
Press and hold in reset until the front LED flashes rapidly.. about 10sec.
    Release the reset.
Open the airport utility and setup the TC to bridge mode.
The actual method depends on version of the OS and airport utility you use.
    This is version 5.
Sorry I cannot post the v6 as I am on a snow leopard computer now. But you go to the network tab, and choose off bridge mode for method of connection. It will be NAT and dhcp by default.
Then setup wireless.. you have a number of choices here.
Either setup with the same SSID Security and password, as the homehub uses.. or a different name, and password..
Each method works fine.. but you sometimes have issues with wireless channels.. for now leave it on auto and see what happens.. if you have issues lock down the radio channels on both devices.. use one out of the following on each, 1, 6, 11 or 13 in UK.. so say 6 on the homehub then 13 onthe TC.
Update the TC.. unplug fromt the computer and plug it into the homehub.
If you have other issues with the setup tell us what OS you run so we can post suitable screenshots.

  • How do I use AirPort Extreme to extend my wifi network - have BT HomeHub 5

AirPort Extreme is plugged into my HomeHub 5 and I have set it up as extending a network using the Airport Utility, but it isn't finding the network - the light is orange
    Please can someone help me.
    Thanks
    Joanna

Please check out the following Apple Support article on how to configure both devices for a roaming network. The "Extend a network" mode on the AirPort Extreme will NOT work in your setup.

  • Airport Express and BT Homehub - how can I get it to work?

    Hello, can someone help??
I have an Airport Express and a MacBook. My only use for my Airport Express is purely to play ITunes music through my stereo via my MacBook wirelessly. Therefore I only require my Airport Express to join my current network.
I recently changed my phone and broadband network provider from Talk Talk back to BT. My Airport Express worked fine when I was with Talk Talk, I was using a Belkin wireless router for my network connection which worked without any problems. When I got my Airport Express, it was easy to set up - it joined my Talk Talk network without a hitch.
When my connection transferred to BT last week, I tried to connect up my Airport Express to my new BT Homehub. However when I went into Airport Utility my AX wasn't there. So, I read the guide on the Apple Support site and reset it to factory settings. This then seemed to make it 'appear' in Airport Utility, so I went through the process of setting it up as I did when I first bought it. When I got through to the final stage when it is 'Updated successfully and is now re-starting', the AX icon seems to disappear from the left hand side of the box and eventually I get an error message stating 'Airport Utility was unable to find your Apple wireless device after reinstating: The settings for this apple device have been successfully updated but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the airport menu and try again' (Incidentally, this last piece of advice doesn't work)... So, I am not sure what to do. I have tried changing the format of the WEP code I need to enter by adding " in front of the code as well as $ as is the suggestion on the Apple Support site...
Is my AX faulty? Is my BT Homehub (The 'next generation of router' as BT call it) preventing my AX from joining my network?? If anyone can help I would appreciate it, I am not very clued up on these things.... :o)
    Thanks

I have now managed to get AX working on my BT home hub. I took my second non-working unit back to Apple in Solihull and got them to test it in store. They agreed it wasn't working. They then tested another unit in store and that did work so I brought that home. It would be worth you doing the same as I got a 10% discount off my next purchase of anything at Apple for my troubles.
I set my homehub security to None (from WEP - in homehub manager/advanced/wireless/security), plugged in my AX to homehub using an ethernet cable, then ran Airport utility and after a couple of runs it finally picked it up. I was able to set the configurations I wanted and 24 hours later it is still working. I set my homehub security settings back to WEP as soon as the AX was configured.
I also installed airport utility on my son's windows laptop and that is now able to print wirelessly as well. So, finally a result.
I would suggest you take your unit back to where you bought it from and get them to test it. If they offer you another one ask for a Mac genius
to test it in store for you first. Also ask them to run through the installation procedure with you. Don't forget to ask for something for your troubles:)
    Hope that helps,

  • Configuring BT HomeHub 4 on home network with AirPort Express & Time Capsule

I have changed my broadband provider from Sky to BT in the UK and hence from a Sky router to a BT HomeHub 4 router but can't get the new router to work as before with my home network and an extended wireless network running off an AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule.  I had the Sky router with the wireless network off acting as the DNS server and the AE and TC set to connect using DHCP, Create a Wireless Network and the Router Mode set to Off (ie Bridge mode).
I am not an expert but I think the issue could be due to the different BT hub IP settings (Hub IP Gateway Address and DHCP Network Range).  From discussion forums I am also not clear whether it is better to use DHCP, Static or PPPoE settings for the AE and TC.
Has anyone managed to configure a BT HomeHub with a home network and an AE/TC for running the wireless network?

There is really very little difference in the setup between the sky hub and the BThub.
BUT the apple routers do not take kindly to sudden changes of management.
Reset both to factory and start over.
The TC or AE plugged into the BThub will still be in bridge mode with create a wireless network.. and the Extreme working in extend wireless mode.. unless you have them tied together with ethernet. (or visa versa depending on your layout.. AE in bridge and TC extending.. same difference).
You can just leave the BT hub wireless on.. or turn it off as you like. Setup can be a bit tricky as the airport utility seems to insist on the router plugged into the Hub taking over as main router.. this is wrong.. but it is hard to get it to do what you want.. so just finish the setup in the airport utility then manually edit the setup to do what you want.
    Or do it fully manually.
I gave a full set of instructions here.
Linking AirPort Extreme to my bt home hub
    Note:
You have express in the title and extreme in the text.. but it is same thing from setup point of view.

  • Extreme base station with BT homehub

    Hi
I wonder if anyone can help. I have a BT homehub that as result of contention needs to be attached to the first phone point into house. I want to be able to get my Imac to connect wirelessly to the BT hub via airport. I then want to use the ethernet on the Imac to connect to the Airport base station so that the rest of the house can connect to the internet, use a USB printer and have access to a shared drive. I can get the Imac onto the BT hub no problem but getting other machines to connect via the Apple network is proving elusive. I think it must be to do with IP setting but I have exhausted my low level technical skills. Hope someone can help

That is a pretty complicated setup. You will end up with at least 2 routers and 2 subnets.
    The iMac:
The iMac should be configured to share the AirPort connection to the Ethernet port.
If the firewall is enabled on the iMac, you need to enable Personal Web Sharing in the Sharing preference pane to open the correct ports.
The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS):
The AEBS should be configured so that the option to distribute IP addresses is DISABLED. This will cause the AEBS to act as a mere wireless access point.
The AEBS should be configured with a different network name than the one used by the BT homehub.
The AEBS should be configured to operate on a different channel than the one used by the BT homehub.

  • Bt Homehub won't let me access an IP Camera outsid...

    Hi Guys,
I'm looking for a guru or detective to help work this one out for me. I'm trying to set up a friends IP Camera (they have a new puppy and it's as cute as can be!). Anyway I've done similar on my own and other networks and it's been pretty simple. After four hours of attempting with a BT home hub though I was ready to throw it out the window.
    Setup description
Homehub was running Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.57.1.3 (Type A)
The IP Camera was sitting at a static IP of 192.168.1.239 (DHCP is enabled on the router, but this was not using it)
The IP Camera to my understanding was wireless connecting, and used the port 81.
It worked perfectly in the internal network
    What I did
At first I tried setting up without a dynamicDNS (just to see if it would work manually, but no dice), so I'll go from the point that I setup a dynamicDNS which the hub connected to fine it was a no-ip one, so h*******.no-ip.org (obviously masked the name).
From my understanding this should have lead to being able to see the homehub setup from this domain? However nothing. Anyway I progressed. I setup a 'user-defined game or application', TCP port range 8080 translate to 81. Then in the supported games & application screen I assigned to 192.168.1.239
So surely h*******.no-ip.org:8080 should now lead to the ip camera? Nothing. Port's closed.
I even tried putting the camera in a DMZ to see if I could access anything - no luck. It does have its own dynamicDNS settings but it doesn't seem to support many setups.
    What am I missing?
Any help would be greatly appreaciated.
    Thanks!

Ah yeah that thread is a bit of a warning sign as to why I can't get the simplist thing to work...
    Read the work around of...
This is what i did to get it working for me so i followed this in the HH3 go to Advanced Settings -> Home Network -> Devices',  when i got to the devices page it will show you all the devices that have connected or are connected to your HH3. i selected my pc name (my Pc is named DELL )i double clicked on DELL and it takes you to another page u will see deivce infomation near the top under that it will say "home network name"  where it said the name of my PC and i just renamed it to the dyndns server i wanted IE: 'ABC.dyndns.com' you dont need the HTTPS bit just the name of the dyndns server you want it to look at.
I saved it logged out and it worked.
Will see if that works. I'll also see if they have an alternative router.
Also thanks for the advice on the settings. It was on port 81, but after getting no where I followed some tutorials on this site to make sure I wasn't doing anything too stupid and they suggested port 8080 so I gave it a go. I don't do BT normally so this might be stupid question but isn't 192.168.1.50 normally part of the DHCP range or does BT use higher up the range?

  • D-Link DIR-100 plugged into BT Homehub 3

First time posting here so please be gentle. I have the BT Homehub 3 and it is on the other side of the room to my Blu Ray and sky box and stereo (Yes, the mrs loves me). The hub also has a HDD plugged in with movies and music on it. My new amplifier (Pioneer VSX-527 if interested) can stream music from devices on the network, however it won't pick up the HDD on the homehub and I think it is because it is plugged into the DIR-100. I thought i's have to change the settings on the DIR-100 however it works with the blu-ray player and sky anytime. Anyone know what i'm doing wrong?? Thanks for your help in advance!!

    Hi Nick,
How is the Homehub connected to the D-Link? Could you give a bit more detail to explain which devices are connected to each router and how? Can any devices on your network see the HDD?

  • Homehub 3 dropping connection to ipads

For around the last month our ipads and Macbook Pro are constantly dropping the wifi connection. We can't access Google Drive and are having problems with accessing the icloud.
We have got a homehub 3 and BT customer support have not been helpful - they just change the channel and say they'll phone back in a couple of days to see if everything's ok. it never is so they change the channel again. This has been going on for the last 2 weeks.
Other than that they tell us we have too many devices connected. We are a family of 4 and each person has an ipad and iphone. We also have a wireless printer and BT Vision box. We get this issue first thing in the morning when only one person is trying to access emails for example and every evening when all four of us might be online. It makes no difference.
We can't get BT Inifinity in our area. Any suggestions greatfully received.

Try a factory reset of the homehub by pressing a pin into the recess button on the rear for about 20 seconds. This can often help with wireless problems.

  • BT Homehub, reboots on its own

So here is the problem that I have been suffering with for 18+ months. I am on my 3rd Homehub, have replaced all filters and cables each time. Had BT engineer out to look at my line and STILL my homehub reboots all by itself, every few days, regardless of the time of day or whether it being used. I do not notice any issues with my Internet access while the hub is working and when it reboots it soon establishes a connection. This has been an inconvenience up until now when I am working from home more often and I see the my bill for BT each month.
The hub has this firmware - Software version 8.1.H.J (Type A)
and this is what I see in the event log
    Any advice most welcome?

  • Airport extreme won't connect via Ethernet to BT homeHub v2.0

    Hi
here's what I want to do:
    1. Homehub is connected to the phoneline and will provide a b/g network for my iphone/xbox/laptop1
    2. I want to connect my airport extreme to this (from what I can tell this must be done through an ethernet cable) so that I can have a separate N network which only 1 laptop will connect to.
So the problem I have is that no matter what options I select in the airport extreme when it's connected via ethernet it tells me that nothing is connected to the Ethernet WAN port. I've tried two different cables different ports on the back of the hub etc. nothing works. Every time I search google or forums for an answer people just write "connected it via ethernet and it works great" but there's no guide to what settings to use that I can see.
Can someone please help me with some sort of noob guide to get this setup how I've stated?
    Many thanks in advance

    Hey Bob
thanks fro the quick response. I have actually tried exactly that but it still flashes orange at me I'm suspicious that the AE may have a fault because during the setup (i can't remember the exact steps) but I got the AE updated and it complained that it could read from the AE (error code was 10057). Googling this does thow up a couple of solutions which I haven't tried.
    so my steps should be:
    Factory Reset the AE
    setup as join existing network
join via ethernet to create a 2nd network
connect up the cable to the WAN port and the Lan of the Hub
    change to bridge mode.
One thing I did notice (which may or may not be related) is the subnet mask on the AE says 255.255.0.0 when I set it up like this. However when I make it just join the network without trying to create a new one (which works) it sets it to 255.255.255.0 . the IP address also begins 192.168.1.* whereas in the other setup mode it is something different. Does that matter at all?
    Thanks
    Alan

  • It's Official BT HomeHub 3 is not fit for purpose!

Having struggled with BT HomeHub 3 both Series A and B since April and May it is now official.  BT have completley resigned their responsablityies and promises of supplying the latest technology and lightening speeds if you use their HomeHub 3.  They will still stand by their contractual obligations over speeds but fall back on the old chesnut that speeds are dependent on other factors but only if you are using a network cable to your hub.....
Technical Support told me in July that I would be better off getting my own hub at a cost to myself as they couldn't help me.  Recently I tried the BT hub again and speeds vary vastly from WiFi and Cable:
    Wifi:-
    Cable:-
I contacted Technical support and they confirm that they know of the issue, but haven't told customers, but they have referred the matter to Open Reach as they are their hardware supliers.
They knew of the issues from May 2012 so why is it now October and the issue has not been fixed.  They still advise that because of their failure I should go and buy £140 worth of my own kit to replace their sub-standard kit.
I wonder if Trading Standards have heard of the issue and the Advertising Standards Agency have seen their 'Big Boy' Adverts?
    Solved!

    DavidM,
Thanks for the offer but I have spent over 10 hours on the phone about these issues since April and have it been confirmed by second line support in India that the hubs are not fit for purpose.  I am an IT Professional myself and am probably a pain in the side for your first line as they are only script readers not IT people.  Once I had run my own tests on the hub, Db, Frequency hopping etc... I knew it was the hub and not the setup.  One of BT Support's problems is they don't support Linux.... only Windoze and Mac...  Strange as the hubs and all your routers, servers etc. use Linux but they obviously don't understand that serious computer people, generally, only use Windose to fix client's front end issues or if a client insists on it.  Anyway, second line support did understand and the issue is confirmed officially as of yesterday.
"Buy your own hub as ours don't work as advertised"
There is little point in contacting you to go round the roundabout a few more times it is just that many of your customers have these issues and they are banging their heads in frustration as not all appear to suffer the issues.  OpenReach are no doubt dragging their feet on the issue as it is a very expensive mistake unless a firmware update can fix it.

  • Can I use time machine to back up via a hard drive connected by USB to a HomeHub router?

Can I use time machine to back up via a hard drive connected by USB to a BT HomeHub router? Is there a better way to back up and store files than via the USB port on my new MacBook Pro? I'd like storage to be accessible from my earlier version MacBook too.

I think you want to make backups without connecting a hard disk via USB. In other words, you want to have the data storage be shared in your home wirelessly.
If this is the case, I recommend using a Time Capsule.
Time Capsule works great with Time Machine. You can set up all your devices to automatically make backups on the Time Capsule wirelessly and effortlessly.

  • Can't connect to network drive in Homehub.

    Hi,
I want to connect to a USB stick plugged into the back of my BT Homehub so I can use it to wirelessly back up my mac with TM. I have plugged it in, but when trying to map the drive, I get 'This file server is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally.'. The drive can't be accessed locally with the 'Network' in Finder because it's not mapped, so I get an empty Network folder and I can't connect it. I've used afp and SMB, but both return either 'This doesn't exist' or 'This file server is available on your computer. Access the volumes and files locally.'.
    HELP?
    Tony

Actually, on second thoughts, TM drives have to be Mac OS Extended format, and Homehub only works with FAT32 drives so it wouldn't work anyway. Oh well.
