Homepage resolution vs. iweb resolution +slideshow complaints

Why is homepage so much better w/ resolution and iweb so crappy?
Why isn't anybody complaining about this?
I want homepage resolution + the homepage slideshow on iWeb, which is way
cooler with the faux steel, without the dumb shadows.
v. 2.0?

Granted that iPhoto 6 has done away with the direct link to HomePage, but it still includes the Export option, which you can use to re-size your images, upload them directly to your iDisk, maintain the photo order from your iPhoto album and then use as the source for your HomePage photo album. OK, it's two steps rather than one, but it's not a bad deal to my mind if you want to stick with HomePage.
Mind you, the description of your experience while arranging your photos in HomePage is as good an argument as you'll find for using iWeb instead in the first place. The fundamental difference, of course, is between using a web-based solution and using dedicated software on your own machine. There's no contest when it comes to speed and ease of use.

    original file size?
Yes, you can. Not sure why you would want to do this. Web images tend to have to balance image quality with download speed. But sure, you can have your original photo used in iWeb. Just drag it from iPhoto directly into iWeb. Then open up the Inspector and click on the Rulers tab. The click "Use original size". That will be your original photo.
If you make any other changes to your photo like shrinking it down to a little square or rotating it or putting a frame around it, then iWeb will convert your photo to a PNG file and subsequently recompress the image for the PNG file. That will again lower your resolution.

  • Possible? Recreate my original Homepage pages into iWeb but retain old URL?

I have Tiger in the box and still have to install it.
I just bought iLife '06 today and will install it after installing Tiger.
I already have a .Mac homepage up — created with Homepage Manager.
I am thinking now that I would like to recreate that original homepage but do it with iWeb.
How do I end up with my original homepage pages all re-done into iWeb templates but retain my original .Mac homepage URL? All my friends know that URL. Could someone please explain?
    — Lorna in Southern California

Well really it's not OR but AND. If you want to do away with your old >homepage-style pages and send people to your iWeb pages via the old URL, >then you must put the redirect on the old pages.
Or you could leave the old pages up but add a link that says "Here's my new homepage..." or something like that...
Hi... I see you live in Florida — and hope you are not in any of the traditional hurricane paths!
I think that I want to start copying/recreating my Homepage pages into iWeb pages and accept that I will have a new URL someday in the near future (because I intend to do the copying as fast as I can and not stop). I can send a notice out and change a few other things. However, I have questions for that interim time when I am working on the iWeb pages but not finished with them.
While I am working on iWeb pages, I am given a new URL, right? And thus, I would at that point have two URLs with .Mac. Is that possible? As I see it, the first URL would be the one I have now, which is the address of my present .Mac Homepage Manager Homepage. And the second URL, wouldn't it be the URL of the iWeb pages? That's possible???
I understand the concept of having a redirect page from my original Homepage ultimatly to the new iWeb page, but is it an automatic redirect or one which the viewer can activate if he wants to? I would not want a redirect page to quickly, blindly switch a visitor from the old Homepage to the new iWeb pages which are incomplete.
I don't understand the mechanics of URLs. I don't know what a Redirect Page looks like or how it works and I don't see how I could be working on my new iWeb pages with its new iWeb URL, all the while leaving my present Homepage alone, viewable by visitors with ITS OWN URL.
    [several minutes passed]
And now that I have sat here and thought for several minutes, it seems that the easiest thing to do would be to have no redirect page for a while. All that I ask in that case is: Is it possible to do that? Is it possible to have my old/present Homepage viewable while I am working on my iWeb pages?
I think I just solved one of my questions all by myself. If I begin to work on iWeb I will be given a new URL — an iWeb URL. Thus technically, when I Edit and Publish in iWeb, technically, people could view those pages, but chances are they will not if I don't announce the new iWeb URL to them. OK. I see......
I am asking all of this now because I am the type that needs to envision and understand a project from start to finish before I start. I do not like surprises — and cyber surprises have the ability to unsettle me.
Could someone please realign my erratic thoughts? Are my goals possible? Can I have my present .Mac Homepage Manager Homepage viewable and visitable while working away on copying them to my new iWeb site? (I bought iLife '06 yesterday and will install it and Tiger today. Tiger first and iWeb'06 second, as instructed.)

  • Photo Resolution in iWeb

Hello all, completely new to this and have only been using my Mac for about a month, but thought I'd give it a try. My question relates to when you are building your website in iweb and bringing in pics from Aperture. What I am wondering is this, when you drag your pics from the Aperture tab in the media column in iweb, does it place the photos on your page at full resolution or is it reducing it for you? I know the ideal resolution for web photos is 72 dpi (prevents copying at full res. for printing) but the photos I have stored in Aperture are usually full resolution unless I export them with an export preset where I have chosen the resolution. I hope that makes sense, thank you to anyone that may be able to help!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Actually iWeb does a pretty good job of optimizing photos when added to a web page if its preferences are set to optimize upon import.
I added a 3.3 MB, 3264 x 2448 pixel JPEG photo to a page, resized it to 300 x 225 pixels and published. The resulting jpg file was reduced to 41KB.
I ran some other tests on this demo page: Photo Import and Download File Size Test.
For photos added to photo pages or album pages it's a different story and depends on what size you select for downloading.

  • Really low resolution on iWeb-published pages

Certain photos I've uploaded are REALLY low resolution while others are not. I can't find a common reason as to why. All the photos are from the same camera at the same original resolution. Ones with a distinct black border are the low-res ones. I've seen others with this problem. Does anyone have a solution?
    Thanks
    -Matt

Matthew Hi - 3 things and a possible solution :
    1. "Really low resolution" - be careful what you're saying here. An image 60 pixels by 60 pixels at 72 dpi and an image 2000 by 2000 pixels at 72 dpi have IDENTICAL RESOLUTIONS - i.e. 72dpi. It's just the dimensions which are different. High resolution means anything toward 300 dpi whatever the dimensions of the image. I bet if you look at the images you say are "really low resolution" you'll see that they are 72 dpi (iWeb does that automatically) but that the image size is really small. The pixelised effect is because iWeb is taking an image smaller than the size reproduced on the page. I think I know why.
    2. My deductions : be careful of the .TIF extension. Some cameras use this extension for RAW files (confusing I know). But not knowing how to read such a file iWeb may actually only be importing a 'preview' of that file. Hence the upsizing and pixelising that's going on.
    3. Solution. Change your files to JPEG before dragging in as suggested elsewhere in this post and upload those. IMPORTANT ! Many iWeb users have had trouble with the same images being used despite renaming, reuploading etc. In reality if you drag a new file in to iWeb with the same name despite having made changes to that file, iWeb seems to always want to show the original.
Here's the fix - You need to DELETE the old files from the iWeb Domain folder. I previously posted a comment concerning 'saving' in iWeb. Publishing does not 'save' your site in the same way as the standard command-S save. What you want to do is get rid of all the dodgy pics in your 'Domain' folder. iWeb stores all your site files in a package called 'Domain' :
Users>Library>Application Support>iWeb>Domain. To access the 'Domain' folder click right and click show all package elements.
In iWeb remove/delete all the bad pics. Now do a command-S save. In principal you have just removed these images from the Domain. Go to the Domain package to check. You can also quit iWeb and reopen. You can also delete directly from the Domain.
    Now import your new images.
    I hope that works

  • Bridge_How Fit-to-Screen with different resolution pictures in Fullscreen/Slideshow

    Hallo,
I´m looking for a solution for my following problem:
I have several photographs in totally different resolutions. Some are pretty small, some are huge.
I want to show them with Bridge in FullScreen-Preview or maybe as a slideshow.
How can i bring them all to fit the whole screen, even if the resolution is to small to fit regularly.
In other words, is there an option for dynamic zooming to bring every frame to FIT the Screen, regardless which resolution it got?
I discovered "scale to fit" in the slideshow options, but it doesnt work for me.
An zooming every file in the right position and size is not an option.
Im sure Bridge is able to do it, beacause even IrfanView and ApplePreview are able. But where to find this option?
    Can anybody help?
    Thank you a lot
    best regards
    madlo

As far as I know, Bridge will not enlarge small images. If you hit '+' on fullscreen preview, it zooms in, but keeps the same zoom for every image.

  • Can I increase site or template resolution in iWeb?

I know that I can increase resolution of a single page from 800 pixel width to whatever I prefer from the pallet menu, but I would like to increase resolution of entire template/site to 1024 width. Is there a way to do it? I searched forum and looked in help files and couldn't find anything on how to change resolution of the entire site vs. having to do it page by page.
Since most people access web with 1023 x 768 or higher resolution it would be nice for Apple to allow user to control resolution of the template/site somewhere in preferences.

Dennis ~ I don't think so — but maybe someone else here knows a way.

Apple's own design award-winning site at apple.com mostly has a width of 980 pixels. Apple's developer guidelines for the iPhone/iPod touch say: "Safari on iPhone also sets the viewport width to 980 pixels, the width of most webpages." And: "...if your webpage is less than 980 pixels wide causing it to scale too small on iPhone..."

  • Does Added Text Resolution Match Photo Resolution

I am adding text to some screen grabs from an old 8mm movie.  The movie resolution is not very high.  When I add text to the screen shots, they are very low resolution.
I am assuming that the text resolution is simply matching that of the screen grab.  Is there anyway to set the text resolution different from that of the photo from the screen capture?

I will piggy back on this discussion.  I have discovered that, although the image resolution is inconsequential when sizing images by pixel dimensions, it still matters if you decide to add copyright information with the type tool.
e.g. I have received images from several people, all sized to 1024 pixels in width, but I wanted to add their names to the front of the images before putting the images into a slideshow.  I quickly discovered that, although the images are of identical size when viewed, the names applied vary in size according to the resolution of the image.
Since different makes of cameras assign a different resolution to images taken with that camera, I needed to change the resolution of the images to all be the same before I could add names that appear as the same size.  This came as a surprise to me.

  • Iweb '09 slideshow not working on website

I have created a photo page in iweb that includes a slideshow with downloading of pictures as an option. I used Fetch to put the webpage on my host. I've done this many times before and not had an issues. This time, the "play slideshow" button is visible, but it won't bring up the slideshow when clicked and the "download" is visible, but not clickable. Any suggestions?

Problem solved: reinstallation did the trick.

  • IWeb '08 - Slideshow Not Working

I created my site in iWeb then published it to a folder and it works wonderfully. But when I uploaded, I got a slideshow error on my "gallery" page. When I click the "Play Slideshow" link, it opens a new window... the dreaded "404 Not Found" with a message that reads "Not Found" in bold letters and the following line "The requested URL http:// was not found on this server.
I checked that all of the files are uploaded and they are. Does anyone have a similar problem? I've searched the forum but found nothing.
The website gallery page is : http://grandavenuethai.com/Our_Gallery.html
    Any help would be appreciated!

On the Our Services page I get a pale QT icon over the photo at the top. Is there to be a video in that location? The other pages show a "missing" QT file. They show up in the exact same place as your google map in the location page. Could there be a connection there?
I checked each page in the Activity window of Safari and there's no QT file indicated for those pages.
You've used a graphic file for the background in each of the pages, right? Then added something over the one area where the map or photos goes.

  • IWeb Photo Slideshow Help

When adding photos to my .mac webpage using iWeb, I do not like the way you can click on each picture, causing it to open into another screen. I only want my pictures to be viewed as the thumbnails in the photo page and/or in a slideshow. Is there any way to deactivate the ability to click on photos to enlarge them? Or is there a way to only allow photos to be viewed through a slideshow??

You can put a shape or text box over the thumbnails (do not cover the play slideshow button).
For the shape, you need to set opacity to 1%, bring it all the way to front, that will disable thumbnails from being clicked.

  • Export resolution and camera resolution question

I am thinking of buying a new camera- specifically one that will film video in widescreen as well as widescreen photo's. I have been looking at some that have a maximum video resolution of 848x480, which will come out fine.
With iMovie, so far I have been using my wife's Casio camera which records video at 640x480 (4:3 ratio), and I have been cropping the video in iMovie and exporting as 640x360 widescreen. The next resolution up from 640x360 in iMovies export settings is 960x540.
My question is, if my new camera has a video res of 848x480, when I export that in iMovie, will it have to be down-scaled to 640x360, or will there be an option to export at the same resolution (I don't think it will let me upscale it to 960x540)?
    Thanks.

As long as you don't have "constrain" checked, it won't resample.

  • Disabled iWeb photo slideshows

I have created some photo collection websites with iWeb and they run fine as "slideshows" on my computer. However, the same slideshows won't work on my iPad. Does this have something to do with the incompatibilty of Flash on Apple mobile devices?? See what I mean at:

Past experience has taught me not to rely on media player assets on third party servers. Yahoo pulling the plug on the EasyListener player is a case in point.
As OT has pointed out, the slideshow works on other servers but, according to Cyclosaurus, some necessary assets are on the Apple server.
Wouldn't it be reasonable to expect that Apple will make these assets available after the demise of MobileMe if enough people requested this?
The iWeb method of getting media onto websites leaves a lot to be desired and there are a lot of other ways to display music, movies and photos. The photo page is one of iWebs few triumphs but there are many alternative slideshows and banners.
Most of these methods require that assets are uploaded to, ideally, your own server but its not so difficult once you grasp the concept and the basics of FTP.
iWeb does provide two other methods of publishing apart from MobileMe. The built in FTP is just as quick, easy and convenient as publishing to MobileMe once you set it up.
Publishing to a local folder and uploading via an FTP app. allows you to add SEO tags and optimize the files for faster download.
A good FTP application makes the task of uploading media player assets very easy - drag and drop.
