Homeplug help

Hello!
I have recently upgraded from "normal" broadband to infinity and speed is good; unfortunately in a long house wireless signal still not so good.
I was provided with a pair of Simpler Networks homeplugs with the original home hub in order to connect BT Vision but want to install a Remote wireless access point in another room such as the TP Link TL-WPA281 AV200.
I appreciate that the simpler networks homeplugs won't work with a TP device  but I don't know if I can just get rid of them and replace with TP homeplugs- will bt Vision still work via a TP connection?
Alternatively is there a (good) simpler networks wireless access point device such as the AV200 on the market?
Many thanks in anticipation your any replies; apologies if this has been asked a million times already (though if it has I can't find it).

BT Vision will work with fine with the hybrid TP homeplugs too. Or you could use your existing homeplugs by buying a network switch and connect your BT Vision and an Access Point to the switch. Some Access Points also have multiple ports so that you wouldn't need the switch. But the hybrid TP homeplugs do sound a simple and tidy solution.

  • Homeplug connection

    Hello
I have recently purchased a HP LaserJet 200 color MFP M276n and wanted to print to it wirelessly using a homeplug but cannot get it to connect to the network.
The orange light on the back of the printer next to the network cable is permanently on and the green light flashes one every 20 seconds or so. I have tried using all the tools on the HP help pages and cannot do half of the things it suggests as I cannot get access to the printer settings via the web address via internet explorer?
Everything else within the house works fine from the other homeplugs but all the other devices have asked for the router password to access iton initial set up but this printer does not seem to have that facility.
Any suggestions appreciated but keep it simple as I am not the best at this sort of thing but I normally manage to get by but this is the most challenging thing yet!

    Hi @excaliber99,
I see by your post that you are unable to network the printer. I can help you.
I am not familiar with the Homeplugs, I looked it up though. If you have Mac filtering setup on this network, you would have to add the printer's Mac address. You can get this information from the Configuration report.
    Printing a Configuration Report.
You would need a router to properly network the printer. The router assigns the IP address to the printer.
Installing the Printer Software on a Wireless or Wired (Ethernet) Network.
Your best bet, is to connect the printer directly to the computer by a USB cable.
    Have a nice day!

  • What is the actual solution to HomePlug + Infinity...

I had the Infinity service installed on Friday past 28th Oct and thought all was well!
Well it was untill I tried connecting my PC / PS3 / XBOX etc through the Solwise homeplugs NET-PL-200AV-PEW-N I'm using.
At the HH3 on a direct connection via cat5 I'm getting 28552 kbps down and 1626 kbps up.
Line stats via bt speedtester show line profile 31359 up and 2000 down.
Problem is that connecting through the homeplugs I'm only getting 3462 kbps down and 1684 kbps up
Now I've spent the last few nights googling forums etc in search of a solution yet I have been unable to find anyone who has figured it out, and has given up dumping the homeplug route for a wired setup!
TBH I have no intention unless as a last resort of putting in Cat wiring
Basically I'm starting to wonder is the issue caused by the HH3/BT Modem setup? "or" is the issue with the homeplugs?
Testing the homeplugs with the revelant software shows a connection speed between homeplugs of between 120 - 150 Mbps suggesting to me that isn't where the restriction is present?
I'm trying to figure out would buying a decent VDSL model like the Draytek Vigor 2750n connecting to the homeplugs solve it or are homeplugs really the issue?
ps. I've tried every suggestion I have come across so far.....moving the power supplies away from the modem/hh3 and the homeplug, turning off the wireless on the hh...
Surley there is a solution to this ?
edit: to add my HH3/Modem is not in the same room as any of the things I am connecting, I'm using a Solwise NET-PL-200-AV-PUSH beside the BT setup to distribute the connection around the house to 3 Solwise homeplugs NET-PL-200AV-PEW-N
And as well as the above I just cannot seem to get my iPhone4 to connect wireless to the HH3 entering the correct password just results in an error message saying "unable to join the network BTHub3-####
I have all the Solwise plugs and the HH3 broadcasting on Channel6

People seem ok on the 200Mbps see msg. #12 in THIS THREAD.

  • Warning - using HomePlug Mains network adapters wi...

Thanks to working with the kind mods from BT I've now figured out the cause of my Infinity "go slow".
Been using Homeplug Turbo 85Mbps network adaptors to connect from the Hub to the PC in my Study (upstairs, when the hub is downstairs).
Despite initial tests showing around 30Mbps download on the laptop (wireless), I typically got 7-15Mpbs download on the PC. The wireless laptop also slowed down to similar speeds, although this improved to around 15-20Mbps after the mods had looked at the line, although the PC stayed slow.
However connecting direct to the hub and disconnecting the Homeplugs gave over 30Mbps again.
With the old Adsl I only got around 2.5Mbps and the Homeplugs were fine.
The Homeplugs are the 85Mbps Turbo model and the monitor app says they are connected at 70Mbps, hence you might reasonably expect them to handle around 30Mbps of traffic.
So be warned, the Homeplugs (or I expect other Mains-borne network devices) don't give the throughput they claim on the box, or on the monitor app !
Reading around on the internet since, it looks like you can only expect around 10-15Mbps in reasonable conditions, hence why the speeds were slow. The variation in speeds seen is probably due to the amount of electrical devices in use in the house/nearby - the performance was better in the morning (daytime, less lights, less TVs etc.) than evenings (lights, TVs etc.)
Hope this might help someone else wondering why their Infinity is slow when using these devices.
Now, got to go, I've got to run some Cat5 through the house to downstairs...

cat5e is fine for gigabit, cat 6 is made for upto 10gbps. Basically its just better shielded, higher quality cable. There is no downside its preparing for future upgrades and it doesnt cost much more than cat5e
[Q] What is the difference between CAT 6 and CAT 5e cable?
[A] Currently there is a great deal of confusion among Ethernet cable buyers concerning whether to purchase Cat5e, or to use Cat6. Most of this confusion comes from a misunderstanding by the buyer that buying Cat6 cable will give them an "all gigabit" network. This is not the case. Unless every single component in the network is gigabit rated, then you will never have a gigabit network, because your network will always run at the speed of your slowest device. Cat5e cable of good quality can run near or at gigabit speeds, it just cannot be "certified" for this use. By comparison, Cat6 is designed especially for gigabit use, and is certified to operate at said speed. It becomes a matter of whether or not you want to pay all that extra money, for little or no noticeable improvement in the performance of you network. In most cases, it makes more sense to go with Cat5e. It is for this reason that most of your new installations in the private sector are going with Cat5e. It is more economical, performs well, and is readily available in many colors. Many IT professionals when asked about why they specified Cat6 for a specific job, often responded stated that they "wanted the best they could get." This is the line of thought behind many purchases of cable. The average consumer often is not aware that there is no real benefit to them to use Cat6, so they let someone talk them in to buying it.
    Q. There is smoke coming out of my open reach box... so can I have a new one.
    A. Sorry sir, The fault is showing at the exchange so your box should be ok.

  • WAG160N - setting as Access Point; help needed

Hi all, I have a WAG160N router currently acting as my main router and a spare Technicolor TG58n. I want to use one of them as a router extension but 1) not sure if it matters which way round, and then 2) how to do it!..
Also, if it helps/ is relevant, I do have a Homeplug in the lounge, where I want to put the router extension (going into a Gigabite switch, out to the TV, Blu-Ray and Amp). Not sure if plugging the extension router into this is worth it?
Thanks for all your help guys....

Hi there, Dean. It may be best to let the Linksys router act as a second router. You may refer to this link, http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=785463d9ecaf4cac84aed245b08d615f_3733.xml&pid=80&r...
Just use the LAN to WAN steps.
By the way, check if the Homeplug works directly behind the router. If it does, then it should work while connected to the Gigabit switch that's in turn wired to the Linksys router.
    Hope that helps.

  • How to convert Comtrend 9020 Homeplug to wifi?

    Hi,
I have a BT Homehub 2, with a pair of Comtrend 9020 homeplugs so that I can use the Internet in an outbuilding (which is out of range of the wi-fi signal).
It works very well, but I would like to be able to use my laptop, without having to plug it in.
Is there a way I can do this?
Could I just get a wi-fi router (one without a modem?) and plug it in to the homeplug in the outbuilding?
If that's how it works, then which router would you recommend?
    Many Thanks,
    Mike
PS If this is not possible, I have thought of getting a new router and wireless range extender.

It would be best to use a different wireless channel than your home hub is using, to avoid interference.

  • Problem using Express over Ethernet via Solwise Gigabit Homeplug

I am hoping someone can help me here.
Similar problem with Tandie (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12175903&#12175903). I have a Vista PC which has no problem at all to connect to my Express over ethernet. I use my Express to "Create new wireless" network and stream my itunes over ethernet, which works well if I have a cable connected to the Express to my network where my Vista PC is connected.
However, when I take my Express to another room and connect it to a Solwise Gigabit Homeplug and my other homeplug connects to my network I then seem to have problems. The homeplug works perfectly with my PS3, but my Express after about 2 hours itunes and Airport Utility is unable to find it. I can however ping the Express, but that is it.
Here's how I configured the AX:
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = unique name different to my Wireless BT Hub
    Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
    Channel = Automatic
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
    AX Firmware ver: 7.4.2

This would be the correct setting if your AirPort Express is connected directly to a simple modem (a simple modem has only 1 ethernet port)
If you have the Express connected back to another router (it will have 3-4 ethernet ports), then the correct setting for Connection Sharing would be "Off (Bridge Mode)"
I can't say if this will solve your problem. If you continue to have issues, then test using an ethernet cable from the Express back to your main router. If this works well, then one or both of the powerline products is suspect.

  • Will Homeplugs work with 'Premium' channels ?

Though this subject deserves it's own thread as I suspect a lot of customers currently connect their vision boxes via homeplugs rather than direct wired by Ethernet cable.
I have the Sky Sports channels + ESPN currently & Infinity. I was recently sent a HH3 to replace my existing hub & today received a letter saying that from late April 'your favourite Premium TV channels' will come through Infinity rather than via aerial. It advised that for me this would be ESPN & SS1 & 2 plus I'll also get 4 standard HD channels.
I'm to call 0800 328 3588 so that BT can check I have the right equipment - which the FAQs on the letter suggest is a cable to direct wire hub to Vision box. Tried that but after hanging on for 45 mins gave up.
With the hub diagonally opposite the TV & Vision box and with wooden flooring, there's no way I could connect hub to box via a cable. Couldn't get that past the Finance Controller ('err indoors !) even if I wanted to...
As I can get iPlayer to work fine with HD programs I'm thinking that although BT don't officially support the use of homeplugs  -  that they will probably work fine? In the same way I guess that Sky say you must have your box connected to a phone line, but you don't have to.
I'd be interested to know if anybody has tested this yet?
If not, I guess I'll be doing so by the end of April - if it works, great. Otherwise regrettably, I'll be (grudgingly) off to Sky.

Interesting topic. I have aiired my views elsewhere on another topic re adaptors. However since having multichannel on 25/02 I have tried ethernet and adaptors. Both worked fine but having 20meters of cable trailing from upstairs (Hub) to downstairs ( Tele) is a no go and I revereted to adaptors which worked well unti 04/03. My wiring was changed in 1995 so is compariitavely new. Spoken to BT technical help desk and was performing various tests for about 11/2 hours as I am missing about 16 channels on BB. This includes BBC1 HD and BBC HD and numerous others including ESPN although I can receive ITV HD and C4 HD - this is with both cable and adaptors. I am at a loss to understand what has gone wrong as BT technical cannot come up with a solution. Having received the full quota of channels in the first place why have some dissapeared?
Hope this doesn't bore you all but does anybody out there have a solution? I am on Infinity 2 with an average speed of 71m.
    Thanks.

  • BT Infinity Installation: Can Someone Help Give Me...

My first ever posting on a forum, so fingers crossed!
To keep getting Sky Sports though my BT Vision, BT tell me I need to "upgrade" to Infinity.  They told me on the phone this was a straightforward switch - an engineer would come and simply install a new box.  But it isn't proving that simple and so far two engineers have been and each has left without doing anything and I'm getting multiple different stories from BT call centres about what needs to be done re cables, routers, home-hubs, sockets etc etc etc.
My current set up is as follows:
    - the BT home hub is upstairs in the study with a wired connection to my main PC and printer.
    - the master BT socket is downstairs in my living room.
    - TV, BT Vision box et al are also in living room, situated in corner diagonally opposite the master socket.
I'm being given various stories by BT people, but with some recurring themes which will make Infinity inpractical for me:
    - I need to have a wire trailed around my living room from the master socket to where the TV is.
    - I need to move the home hub downstairs to be beside the tv and connected to the tv.
    - With the home hub downstairs, my PC and printer upstairs will only be connected wirelessly (I worry that this will affect internet connection speeds on my PC and wireless printing is a nightmare, although the person at BT today said it wouldn't be a problem - but this seems to be contradicted by other information on BT websites saying to get the benefit of fibre optics you need a wired connection.
I get the sense that no one I speak to on the phone really knows what they're talking about and unless I can be sure what I'm getting, I'd rather walk away from Infinity and probably BT altogether.
The scenario I'd like to achieve is all the equipment stays where it is and no additional wires trailing around my house.  Is this possible, and if not, what is the least bad option for me (i.e. that reduces the need for any additional wires and ensures internet speeds are not affected)?
Thanks to anyone who cares to help.

A wired connection is definitely better for BT Vision and to avoid using wireless upstairs, you can use your ring mains if you get a couple of Homeplugs.
Unfortunately, the only way to ensure the best network speeds is to use ethernet cable to connect everything, so if you don't want to do that you'll have to compromise.

  • Photosmart C8180 Touch display will not sleep when networked using Devolo Homeplug

The printer operates perfectly when networked via Devolo Homeplug system except that the touch screen will not enter sleep mode after 30 minutes of inactivity.
However, if the Devolo system is unplugged then the touch screen will enter sleep mode correctly.
    Can anyone help.

I'm seeing similar behavior when I disconnect my TBD. My Retina MBP doesn't go to sleep. I get to work an hour later and it is very hot to the touch.
I'm not seeing lots of people complaining, so I wonder if it's something weird I do. Do you have VMWare Fusion or XQuartz running when you try and sleep?

  • Re: port forwarding bt hub 3 via homeplugs

Hi I have set up portforwarding on my router and says open on my Xbox one but when I do online check it's says closed wich is giveing me lag on games like (fifa 14) I have tryed everything but there is 1 more thing I think may be causeing it I use homeplugs and they are connected through 1 main source I was wondering do you have to portforward the homeplugs and always use ip adress

To this date, I've never seen a game which requires ports to be open.
Let me explain briefly how port forwarding works:
After defining a port-forwarding rule, this tells your router which device to send incoming packets on those port(s)
You would only need to set up a rule if an external service needed to connect to an application via that port when there was no ongoing connection
Games do not require ports to be forwarded because they open connections to the multiplayer servers/voice servers and all communication between the game and the external server is via that connection
If a service required port forwarding, it would not 'lag' without it, it would simply not work. The data could not be passed to the service if it was a requirement.
If you are indeed experiencing lag due to a poor internet connection to your Xbox, follow these steps:
Restart your Home Hub and check if the connection improves
Ensure your Homeplugs are not connected to extensions, they are connected to wall sockets
Ensure the cable going between your Hub and the Homeplug is connected to the 'GBit' port on the Hub (should improve bandwidth)
Remove any port forwarding rules you have made in an attempt to fix this issue
If possible, try using a wireless connection or try wiring the Xbox directly to the router
If the connection issues occur across multiple devices, please provide details.
    Thanks!

  • HH4 homeplug issue

    hi,
I had my hh4 installed today.  everything has to run off wifi because of the location of my master bt socket.
my pc and laptop connect fine wirelessly, but as soon as i plug in my homeplug (delovo dLan 500 duo) the wifi disappears?
The homeplug is supposed to enable both my xbox 360 and Humax youview box to connect, but I can't find a way to get the homeplugged connection to work at the same time as the wifi.  seems I can only have one or the other.
    Any suggestions please?

I presume you have two homeplugs.
Turn on the one that is connected to the homehub while the other one is turned off. Does the wireless signal drop out?
If not then turn on the other one. Does the signal now drop out?
If yes then swap the homeplugs over ie. plug the second one into the homehub and the one which was in the homehub connect to your device and repeat the process. Does the signal drop out again when the same homeplug is switched on?
If when you switch the first one that is connected to the homehub on and the signal drops out, swap them over as above. This should help in trying to establish if one is faulty.
It would be easier if you had another home plug to swap one out at a time but as I presume you don't this is the only way I can think of to try and check them.
I should have added that I know they are working via Ethernet but it is to try and establish if they are causing interference that is causing your wireless to drop out.

  • MSI MEGA ePOWER 85 HOMEPLUG POWERLINE ETHERNET BRI...

Hi there Support, I've a HH5, no probs whatsoever via wireless, ethernet and dongle. Now I bought one of the Homeplugs in Title OP, and am getting nowhere. supposed to just plug and play, Network Manager ( win8.1) reports as "unidentified Network" Fist thing I need to know really is if BT is in any way blocking this ethernet bridge as vendor told me "I know that it works with Solwise. I also know they don't work with Devolo" Hmmn? Where to start, got a green light on LINK/ACT, cable fine, see enclosed pic of Network The working one is my dongle, its the ethernet underneath  that i need to get working?
can provide HUB info etc, I was hoping, the electric socket + cable would pick up the BT Home Network
I have where I use it for TV, laptop and gaming PC ..

Where do the powerline adapters come into it?
You can only have one powerline adapter connected to the home hub, that becomes the master or AP. Any others have to be slaved to that master one.
Connecting more than one poweline adapter to the home hub will cause an conflict, and result in one of the ports being locked out.

  • Extending wireless network via ethernet help

Hello, I'm helping my sister & brother in law get a wireless network running and was wondering if anyone can share some advice about extending the wireless from an Airport Extreme with an Airport Express. They have no networking experience at all and I have a little so got roped into this.
The house they live in is an unsual design (husband an architect) with a feature mid way through the house which kills the wireless signal stone dead so only one half of the house gets wireless.
    * The Cisco cable modem is a 4 port router with wireless (disabled) and an active DHCP server.
    * The cable modem is plugged into the WAN port on the Airport Extreme.
    * The Airport Extreme is set to Off (bridged mode), obtain IP via DHCP so it acts as a wireless access point.
The above setup works great for any wireless devices, although I am a little unsure if that is the proper way to go about it, I'm not used to Apple gear but bought it for the purpose of extending the network and keeping things simple.
The house was wired for ethernet but things didn't work out so well as the cable modem is a temperamental beast and the one place it would give a reliable link was a place with no ethernet ports nearby.
Anyway the plan is to get some homeplugs (ethernet over powerlines) and link the Airport Extreme and Airport Express that way giving a roaming network but can anyone suggest what settings I use on the Airport Express. Apple's own roaming tutorial seems to contradict the settings I'm already using by turning on connecting sharing for the Airport Extreme which last time I tired I think the cable modem did not like.
    Thanks.

My advice would be to only use the Cisco device as a cable modem and disable all of it's router features. You can then configure the AirPort Extreme to create a wireless network. The built in Wizard will guide you thru this easily.
So you should take it (AirPort Extreme) out of Bridge mode, And use it to set up and administer your network.
After you've done this, check that both the wired and wireless connections are working properly before trying to extend the network.
Once you're able to connect successfully to the AirPort-created network, then you can extend it (if it's still necessary) using the AirPort Express.
This is very easy to do.
In the Airport Extreme be sure to check the box "Allow this network to be extended" in the Wireless tab.
then you'll need to configure the AirPort Express by connecting to it. (This is most easily done by temporarily connecting to it's ethernet jack with an ethernet cable and running the AirPort utility.
Once it finds the Express, Go to the Wireless tab and select  "Extend a wireless network" as the Wireless Mode.
You'll then be presented with a list of Wireless network names. select the name for the network you created with the AirPort Extreme, including any security mode and password you set up.
Click on update to send the configuration to the airport express.
The LED will blink yellow a few times, and if it then turns solid GREEN you're all set.
You can disconnect it from the computer and un plug it.
Then select a location for the Express about half-way between the furthest spot you need wireless access and the Airport Extreme . Plug it into the nearest outlet and the LED should flash yellow and then turn solid green.
When it does, you're all set and should see better wireless access through the rest of the house.
Let me know how you make out.
