Homescreen Mail icon behaviour on click

Have just set up my iPhone4 with IOS4.1 and have noticed that when clicking the mail icon I open one of my mail accounts instead of opening the 'Mailboxes' list of accounts. Didn't happen before on my 3G with IOS4.1. Anyone else getting this behaviour?

You're welcome.
There is no change with the Mail app from pre-iOS4 and iOS4 in regards to leaving the app. When pressing the home button to leave the app pre-iOS4, the app was not quit. When removing the app from the Fast App Switching or recently used apps bar, it is no different from leaving the app prior to iOS4. The same applies when removing the Phone app and Messages app from the Fast App Switching or recently used apps bar. Doing so does not quit these apps. They remain suspended regardless if removed from the Fast App Switching bar or recently used apps bar which doesn't accomplish anything.
There is nothing gained by removing the Mail app and Safari from the Fast App Switching or recently used apps bar which is the same for the Phone and Messages app.
I rarely access the Fast App Switching or recently used apps bar. The only time I do access it is to quit a 3rd party app that is running in the background such as music streaming app.

+Is the fast app switcher dock a task manager?+
+You’ll remember this question for the OS 4 keynote Q&A session:+
+Q: How do you close applications when multitasking?+
+A: (Scott Forstall) You don’t have to. The user just uses things and doesn’t ever have to worry about it.+
+A: (Steve Jobs) It’s like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it. In multitasking, if you see a task manager… they blew it. Users shouldn’t ever have to think about it.+
+You can manage your apps manually in the hidden dock by removing them, which sends them to the closed state, but what Steve said still holds true…the users don’t have to think about it. *A regular user on OS 4 can get along just fine without closing apps manually or even looking at the hidden dock at all for that matter.* All the operations of managing the apps for memory and CPU concerns are taken care of automatically by system, *so there is no advantage to closing them yourself.*+
Only with a 3rd party app that is running in the background such as a music streaming app, or if you want to quit a game that has been updated for iOS4 to be suspended when leaving the game so you can return to the game where you left off without having to restart the app and begin the game from scratch.
Since this is a problem or bug only when removing the Mail app from the Fast App Switching or recently used apps bar, there is no need to do it since there is nothing gained when doing so.

I cannot open my e-mail icon once i click on the button my mail give me clear screen

Kill mail app from multitasking and retry.
If that's not work, Hold Power and Home button until Apple logo appears.

  • When I click on the mail icon on my iPad 2 the mail accounts do not show up.

    iPad 2 32GB Version 8.1.1
When I click on the Mail icon, the mail accounts do not appear. The screen is blank except in the he upper right corner of the screen I can see mini icons: flag, folder, file box, arrow, and pad/pencil mini icon.
I've been having a number of issues with Facebook ever since I upgraded to Version 8, so I don't know if this is a version issue or something else.
    I've tried rebooting/restarting, etc. Nada.
    I'd appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks.

Close all apps and then reset the iPad. If that does work, reset all settings.
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Next, reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Reset all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings. You will not lose any data, but most of the device settings will have to be entered in the settings app again.
FWIW, I don't use Facebook at all, the app or in a browser, but I have read more that a few posts here where people that use the app all the time claim that is very buggy and causes all sorts of problems for them. Maybe closing the app along with the reset will help.

Which Mail icon? That in the Applications folder, that in the Dock, or some other? You do not have to quit your applications in order to shut down your computer (heck, you hardly ever need to shut down your computer).

  • HT1338 I double click on my mail icon but nothing happens. What shall I do?

I have gone to look at my email this morning, but when I click on the Mail icon nothing happens. There is a Mail toolbar at the top of the screen but my screen remains blank. Any ideas? I am not techy so have no idea!

Is it possible you made your Mail "Message Viewer" window full-screen? Mine is that way (intentionally), and the effect is similar to what you describe. (I have the "Activity" window open, so I see that window in my #1 desktop, and I have other applications open, so I see their window behind it.)

    Ok, that's plenty of space.
Check the S.M.A.R.T. status on your HD: Boot from install disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down the c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar > select Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the left side (the name of the HD’s manufacturer and the model number, usually the top item in the list) > look at the bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” (good) or something more ominous like “Failing.”
If S.M.A.R.T. status is "Verified," run Repair Disk > click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility (such as DriveGenius, TechToolPro, DiskWarrior) or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD which will need to be replaced (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.

  • Since upgrading to OS5 I know longer receive notice of incoming mail unless I actually click the mail icon.

Go to System Preferences > iCloud and make sure your account info is correct, delete the password and reenter to be sure it is clean.  Go to Mail and then open Preferences and check the account informaiton for the iCloud account and again, delete and reenter the password for the account.  Sometimes the passwords get garbled during an upgrade.

Don't recall the exact wording. But it is the same in appearance as others.  Anyway, problem solved using RogerWilmut1 reply to someone else.  I opened Applications and got the icon back.  Thanks for responding.

  • I click on mail icon but nothing happens and i cannot access mail or send it.

I click the mail icon and nothing happens. How can I fix this problem so that I can send and recieve mail again?

    Hi ...
Try launching Mail from the Applications folder.
If you can launch Mail from there, then drag the Mail icon straight up off the Dock so it goes, "poof"... then after you have the Mail app open again click and hold the new icon in the Dock then click Options > Keep in Dock.

Click your Apple menu  top right in your screen.
