Homesharing + Apple Remote App on 2 iPads = different display

Hi everybody,
I have the following setup installed at home: An Apple TV 2 + Two iPads. My wife and I are using the devices together, so each of us has their own Apple ID / account ("MyAccount", "WifeAccount") which we are using for our iPads. However, I have entered the same account for homesharing on all devices, so it looks like this:
Apple TV 2: iTunes = MyAccount, iTunes Match = MyAccount, Homesharing (HS) = MyAccount
First iPad (me): Overall: MyAccount, HS = MyAccount
Second iPad (wife): Overall: WifeAccount, HS = MyAccount
We are using the Apple Remote iPad App on both iPads to control the Apple TV 2. However, we have the following issue:
When I use the Remote App on my iPad, I can directly access the music files which are in the iCloud through iTunes Match. "Directly" means I don't need to turn on my TV, i.e. I can see, browse through and select all music files directly on the iPad and they will start playing on the Apple TV.
So I am not streaming from the iPad to the ATV2 (i.e. no Airplay); the iTunes Match songs play directly on the ATV2 as if I were selecting them via TV. So far, so good...
Now, when my wife starts the Remote App on her iPad, she can see and select the ATV2 and she can control it via TV (with swiping and clicking), however, she doesn't see any of the music files on her iPad. This means that she always has to turn on the TV and click through all the options to select music (because that way she can see the files in the cloud), but she can't select them directly on her iPad.
I understand that she doesn't have my iTunes Match account activated on her iPad, however, from my perspective this should not be required., since the ATV2 is logged in to the iTunes Match account and thus we both can select the music via the TV interface - but only I can see and select the files via iPad.
Does anyone experience the same problem and/or has a solution for this so that my wife can select the songs on her iPad as well?
Thanks a lot!
Hobbes

Hi Winston,
Thank you for your answer! I agree that this seems to be a logical explanation, but then it is a strange way of implementation. After all, anyone can access all my music by going through the TV interface with the physical silver Apple remote, regardless if any computers, iPads or iPhones are turned on. So the ATV2 has access to all the music files and also lists them all, however, in the App only I can see them - my wife has to use the TV & remote.
Further, home sharing should enable all my family members to listen to all "my" music. My MacBook Pro provides music via the "physical" iTunes library, my ATV1 provides music via the physical iTunes library (stored on the HDD), my ATV2 provides music via access to iTunes Match.
So now I can access & see all files directly: MBP, MBP via ATV2, ATV1 and of course ATV2.
My wife on the other hand can only access MBP, MBP via ATV2, ATV1 but not ATV2 unless she turns on the TV.
So maybe Apple followed the logic you described when designing home sharing & the remote app, but then they moved from a great implementation on the ATV1 to a "user unfriendly" solution on the ATV2...
Oh, well, looks like I'll be keeping my ATV1 longer than I had expected ;-)

  • TS1741 Apple remote app on iPad & iPhone cannot find library

I have used the Apple remote app on my ipad in the past, controlling my computer and also my stereo using airport express.  I haven't used it in a few months, decided to have another look at it and have run into trouble.  I keep getting 'could not find' when I try to add my itunes library.
Itunes can see my iPad, when I try to add the library it pops up in ituned to put the passcode in.  My wifi is working fine in the house on both iPad and iPhone.  I have deleted and re-added the app, upgraded to the new itunes, restarted computer, tried using the Remote App on my iphone.  All the same thing.  I've also done everything in the help section for the problem.
Please help, I really need this to work as we are having a big party and was going to use this instead of a juke box.

Try quitting the app and then reset your iPad.
Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it jiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Apple Remote App or Home Sharing won't work on iPhone or iPad with iTunes (Win 7)

    Hi,
After I updated my Remote App (version 4.0) on my iPhone 5 (iOS 7.0.3) and iPad-3rd generation (iOS 7.0.3) and updated my iTunes (Version 11.1.3.8) on Win 7, I no longer can get Apple Remote App to work or my Home Sharing to work with Music/Videos for shared library.
I've followed every step in troubleshooting for Remote App (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1741) with system requirements, proper iTunes settings, Home Sharing setup, Network connections, restarting the network router, and checking firewall settings.  I've also done every setp in troubleshooting for Home Sharing (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972).
I've done multiple combinations of signing out on both iDevices and iTunes with Home Sharing, turning them on in different orders, closing and re-opening the apps and iTunes, restarting the iDevices and my computer.  No matter what I do, nothing works.
I've even tried taking my computer and iDevices with me to different routers (work, home, friend's house, etc.) to see if it was a router problem, but no matter what I do it will not work.  I am looking forward to getting an Apple TV soon, but if these problems persist, the outcome of that possibility is unlikely.
Are any of you experiencing problems like this?  I could really use some help.
    Thanks for all your support.

I just ran iTunes Diagnostics (Help --> Run Diagnostics... --> "Check" Network connectivity tests).
    I found this:
    Windows Firewall is on.
iTunes is NOT enabled in Windows Firewall.
Connection attempt to Apple web site was successful.
Connection attempt to browsing iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to purchasing from iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to iPhone activation server was successful.
Connection attempt to firmware update server was successful.
Connection attempt to Gracenote server was successful.
I checked my Firewall settings (Windows Security Essentials) one more time, and it IS enabled for Home/Work (Private) and Public.
I think I'm going to uninstall and reinstall iTunes and see if that helps.

  • Avi/WMV video using Apple Remote App to Apple TV via iPad?

Will this work if I install the codecs to play these with quicktime? Or do I need to manually convert my videos to .mov to stream them?
I don't have these actual products to test so I can't try to figure it out myself but if anyone has come across this I would love to know the answer. Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
When using the remote app on the iPad/iPhone etc, the content is streamed from iTunes to the Apple TV, it is played by the Apple TV not by iTunes, therefore installing Quicktime components on your mac/pc will not help the Apple TV decode an unsupported stream.
I hope this is what you were asking.

You can't, you will need to get a new remote.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Your Apple TV may have become paired with another remote. Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen.

  • I can't connect to my iTunes library on my Macbook Pro using the Apple Remote app on my iPhone 4S. Why?

    Hi all,
I've been looking through the forums for help with this problem. There are a couple of threads with similar problems, but no solved threads and the discussion doesn't seem to go anywhere... As far as I can tell, it's been causing a lot of annoyance for many users, including myself, but it looks like the community's in the dark about why it's happening!
I'm trying to connect to my iTunes library using the Apple Remote app on my new iPhone 4S. As you may know, there are two ways to do this:
Connect via Home Sharing by setting up Home Sharing on both iTunes and the iPhone, or
Connecting directly to iTunes using a four digit passcode.
I've tried both methods, and neither work!
Here's what happens for each method:
From the Remote app start screen, I tap the "Turn on Home Sharing" button. I enter my Apple ID details (which are definitely correct), and get a confirmation message on my phone saying "Home Sharing is on using [my email address]. To control iTunes: Choose Turn On Home Sharing from the Advanced menu in iTunes on your computer." I then go to iTunes, turn on Home Sharing, enter my Apple ID again and get a confirmation message saying "Home Sharing is now on", etc. However, there's no connection formed between my iPhone and my Macbook Pro - the Remote app just shows a message saying "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer or on Apple TV using the account [my email address].
From the Remote app start screen, I tap "Add an iTunes Library", and the four digit passcode is shown on my phone. I select the new "Quintin's iPhone" item that appears in the iTunes sidebar under "Devices", and enter the passcode on the screen that appears. Once I've entered it, I get a confirmation message saying "Your Remote is now able to control iTunes" with an "Okay" button. Clicking the "Okay" button makes the screen and the sidebar item disappear completely. On my phone, a message that says "Looking for ..." is shown on the screen with a spinning loading wheel, but nothing happens. After a minute or two, it stops and simply says "Could not find".
After trying both methods, I went through all of the troubleshooting steps here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1741 . Absolutely no effect.
I should mention that I was experiencing similar problems on my old iPhone 3Gs with an older version of iTunes. I thought it might have been some kind of hardware fault and expected it to clear up once I got the new phone, but the problem is still there. It's a new phone, a new computer, a newer version an iTunes... even a different network I'm trying to connect to it on. Bizarre!
I've even tried using the Mobile Air Mouse remote application instead. However again, the Mobile Air Mouse app on my phone can't pick up the Mobile Air Mouse server on my Mac.
I'm kind of at the end of my rope here. Anyone?

I have the exact same problem trying to use the Remote app on both my iPhone 3gs and iPad 2 with either my Mac or ATV2.  My Remote app used to work on my phone - I can't recall if I ever actually used it with my iPad, but when I tried today, I got all the same results as you did (on both iPad, and then iPhone).  I  was using my ATV2 to play music from iTunes on my Mac and wanted to use the Remote app, but it would not connect to either device no matter what I did.

  • The Remote App on my Ipad does not connect to Itunes on my Desktop

I cannot get the Remote App on my Ipad to connect with Itunes on my desktop. The Ipad tells me to turn on Home Sharing in Itunes on my computer but home sharing is already turned on on my computer. Also, my Ipad does not show up on my Desktop.

    Hi Chris,
The article linked below details a number of troubleshooting steps that can help get the Remote app to successfully connect to your Apple TV.

  • My apple remote app on my iPhone 4S has stopped working after the 7.0.6 security update.

My apple remote app on my iPhone 4S has stopped working after the 7.0.6 security update. It's not my home sharing or router setting, I have an ipad that I haven't yet updated that works completely fine and my network is run on the newest AirPort Extreme.

  • Can't get Apple Remote App to stay connected to my ITunes library.

I recently had my modem and router taken out by lightening.  So I replaced them both with what is supposed to be the latest and greatest.  Simultaneously, Apple had a new version of ITunes, so I updated.  Now I can't get the Apple remote app to stay connected to ITunes.  If I start ITunes on my computer, my IPhone 5 will see and connect to the library, as well as my IPad.  But as soon as my IPhone or IPad goes to sleep and I try to reconnect to the library, it can't connect to the library.  I've never had any connection problems before and not sure what is causing the problem.  I can turn off Home Sharing in ITunes and turn it back on again, or restart ITunes and it works, but as soon as the IPhone or IPad goes to sleep, it won't reconnect again.  Is this a router issue or ITunes Home Sharing issue?  Any input to resolve this will be greatly appreciated..............because it is really annoying not to be able to control music the way I did before!  All products have the latest updates.

Take it back and exchange it.
If the remote doesn't work out of the box new then either remote is faulty or AppleTV is faulty (eg IR sensor not located properly in the case).
Either way one of them isn't working, exchange it.

The gyro no longer works when using the remote app on my iPad. I updated to iOS 7.0.1.
This seem to happen after the update. Any suggestions?

    Dear Apple friends,
I have the exact same problem with some apps.
Even when I try some websites in Safari and Chrome that require loading big chunks of data they crash.
Today it crashed in two new places. In the notification center and when I opened newstand app I no longer was able to return to the main window and the dock disappeared.
I have my ipad retina for about three months now but latelly this issue has became more frequent. What should I do?
Should I update to the latest firmware and do what raymond73 said?
Is there a fix for this issue?
Has Apple said anything about this? Because I see that this issue is happening to a lot of people.
Is it possible to downgrade to iOS 6?
Is it a firmware problem? That can be fixed in future releases? Or an hardware issue?
Should I wait or go to the place I bought it and try to get the money back?

  • Apple Remote App not reflecting recently added genres

During the initial round of cataloging movies, etc. and adding some custom genres, they were immediately reflected on the Apple Remote App.  However, subsequent additional genres are not showing up.  If I use the trackpad interface of the Ipad to navigate the Apple TV menus, the new genres are there...they just aren't on reflected on the remote app.
    Any ideas?

You are not alone. I tried all the fixes, multiple times, but nothing worked.
I think there's nothing to do but wait. The fact that many of us are experiencing the same problem with the iPad Remote app, and the fact that the iPhone Remote app still works fine, tells me it's a glitch in the software - maybe Apple TV 5.2, maybe iOS 6.1 (I updated to both yesterday).
Meanwhile, since Apple does not read these forums, I suggest we all leave comments on their feedback page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
That way they'll at least know a bunch of us are having this issue.
Hopefully Apple will issue a fix soon.

  • Apple Remote app closes immediately upon launch

Apple Remote app launches on my ipad and then immediately closes.  This has just started happening.  I've not updated any OS.  I've tried uninstalling and then reinstalling. No love.  Any suggestions? Currently running OS 7.0.6 on Ipad. Thanks

I would uninstall the app, run "erase all settings" from the settings>general>reset menu, then run "reset all network settings" from the same place, and then reinstall the app after the reboot.  You won't loose any of your files, but your device will reset to default volume levels, forget wifi networks, and all switches and settings menus in the settings app will be back at defaults.

  • Apple Remote app Stopped working

Since update 2015-003, my iOS Remote app will not work. Does anyone know why this is and how to fix?

    Hello Wrains1972,
The pairing process happens when you turn on Home Sharing.
Set up Remote app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201664
Turn on Home Sharing using Remote
Connect iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a Wi-Fi network on the same local network as your Mac, PC, or Apple TV.
Open the Remote app on your iOS device.
Turn on Home Sharing from the Remote Settings screen.
Sign in to the same Home Sharing account you used to sign in on your other devices.
After you set up Home Sharing on one or more devices, Remote will pair with those devices and you can start controlling them. You can use separate Apple IDs for Home Sharing and the iTunes Store on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. For example, you can sign in to Home Sharing using one account and then use a separate account for the iTunes store.

  • ATV2 with ethernet connection not found by Apple remote app

Not sure if this is really possible/supported:
    * Apple TV 2 connected to an ethernet/wifi routher with an ethernet cable
    * iPhone connected to same wifi router
    * Both have an ip address in the range 10.0.0.x
    * Using the same Apple ID
The remote app cannot find the ATV device. My guess was, since the are in the same network, the app should find the ATV. Am I wrong?
Hint: The ATV DOES find an iTunes library on my Windows computer, attached with an ethernet cable. So network connectivity on the ATV is working.
