Homesite R.I.P

Macromedia sure knows how to kill a popular and amazing
product. WHY not sell the source to a company that cares?
PLEASE ALLAIRE TELL ME I'M DREAMING, Tell me that the Devil
(Macromedia) did not buy this software from you, just to let it go.
GOD DAMN!
I HATE MACROMEDIA (ADOBE)... It's pointless to still have
Homesite in their product catalog. ARGH.
Ok i'm cool now.

Also mourning the loss of the product...
Just upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit this week and when attempting to install Homesite 5.5+ it wouldn't budge. Seems to be bad installer, probably due to 16-bit support drop in 64-bit windows. When I get VM version of XP going, will reinstall, but what a pain to have to run different OS to use probably one of the best coders that ever existed. Been using since 3.0.
Dreamweaver...blah on coding, and the acquisition of companies is no surprise. Seems whenever something good is developed, money is made, then company or product is sold while successful. Then new company drops support or development, and your forced to move to another one of their products or find something new altogether.
RIP HomeSite....

  • I miss the old Homesite

I'm in a bit of a delima. I have used an old version of
Homesite for some time now. It was the version that would allow the
three views; edit, preview, and the editable WUSIWYG screen. As I'm
sure all of you know, this version will no longer work with any
    updated windows XP.
My needs are VERY basic, and I only edit one page at a time
for my Yahoo Store. Does anyone know of a web authoring software
that will work lik the old Homesite? I like the speed of the
wusiwyg interface, but the ability to view and edit the code. I
first started editing html back when it first came out, but all
this new-fangled technology has my head spinning. Yes... I'm old.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Homesite and windows 7

    Hello,
I have been struggling to install Homesite 5.5 on Windows 7 and it is not working out well.
There are permission issues with the helpfile and every thing else.
where do I go now? Do I revert to Dream weaver or what else that is not expensive.

    umuayo wrote:

Yeah, you are probably going to need to go to an IDE that was designed to work on one of the latest versions of your OS, not one three versions ago created last decade.
A few of your choices are, DreamWeaver, ColdFusion Builder, CFEclipse, Crimson Editor and Notepad.
Obviously the prices and capabilities of these choices very widely.

  • A plea to Adobe: Make Homesite open source

I know this won't go anywhere, but I need to ask anyway.
Please please please, make Homesite open source.
I have tried other editors over the years but I come back to
HS every time. Macromedia ignored Homesite when they bought
Allaire, now Adobe is ignoring it after buying Macromedia. Homesite
is a wonderful code editor, but it needs some tender loving care
    after being ignored for years.
Keep it commercial, it doesn't have to be free. But please,
open up the source. Let the few of us that still use it make it
    better.

I just love seeing replies here!
I finally broke down and got CS4  and included Dreamweaver based on user groups saying in code view it is *almost* like Homesite.
    argh... the ambiguity of *almost*...
a horse is almost like a giraffe...
I still have homesite installed... there is NOTHING like HOMESITE!
Hand coders do not want all the bells and whistles of Dreamweaver!!!!!
Hey maybe APPLE would buy it!
I don't think it ever worked on MAC but maybe they could make a cross platform and make it run on both!
OPENSOURCE would be really awesome though!
Anybody know anyone at Cisco?  now that they have openoffice maybe they would like to fund Homesite!
Homesite to me is the OpenOffice of the web dev world.
OR maybe the folks that have CSE Validator...

  • Homesite keeps asking for registration information

I have been using Homesite 5.5 for several years.  I was using it successfully in Windows 7, 64 bit.  I recently upgraded my desktop to Windows 8, 64 bit, and when I went to use Homesite for the first time since the upgrade, it asked for my registration information, including serial number, as if it hadn't been registered.  After I entered it, it asked for the serial number of the program I had upgraded from, which I also entered.  It then brought up the registration screen again, followed by the previous serial number screen, etc.  After going through this three or four times, I was finally able to get into the program, but after I closed the program and tried to open it again, the same thing happened.  Even though I have Dreamweaver (and the entire CS 5 Design Premium suite), I prefer to use Homesite, and want to find out how to get it functional again.  I assume this is something to do with the registry, but have no idea how to fix it.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey Folks, I think I have found a solution - even if I cannot prove if it can be reproduced on any other machine:
After having the same Problem I tried several workarounds - and suddenly one crazy idea I had worked out:
    Run Homesite under "compatibility mode"***
    Enter registration information
Homesite will run - but most of the menu bars won't appear. Don't mind: compatibility mode was only necessary once to remember the registration information...
Close Homesite and switch back to normal mode
Homesite will start and stop asking for registration info...
This worked well on my Windows 8.1 Pro 64 Bit System - I hope, it works well with all your Systems too! Homesite is such a perfect simple editor and I'd badly miss it if it would not run on my system...
    *** For compatibility mode:
Open the Homesite program folder in Explorer and look for Homesite.exe
Right click on homesite.exe --> properties
    Select "compatibilty mode"*
    * I am using a German Windows and am not quite sure, if "compatibility mode" is the correct translation into English. If not, look for something similar...
Good luck to all of you Homesite-Lovers!

  • HomeSite not included in CS3 Web Premium?

I recently purchased CS3 Web Premium for PC and was surprised
to find that HomeSite is not included in the software. Is this
correct, or is there someplace I can download a copy of it? I was
under the impression that HomeSite was included in the CS3 suites,
or at least included with Dreamweaver (which is part of CS3 Web
    Premium). Any info is appreciated.

Well, what a drag. I like Dreamweaver for some things, but
for doing web dev when you are coding stuff yourself I think
HomeSite is one of the cleanest code gen tools I ever came accross.
I like it because it seems to mangle your own written code the
least of any tool when used back and forth from "source code" to
    "design" modes.

  • Homesite Future - What would you want changed?

There have been threads debating whether HomeSite was
orphaned or whether it would be upgraded or not. Since none of us
know, those are mainly ways we've all been expressing our
    frustration.
Someone pointed out to me recently how useful HomeSite is
even now "as it is" (which I knew of course), but he also
enumerated some good arguments why there might not be much demand
for HomeSite to be upgraded. If fact he has trouble sometimes
convincing people to upgrade from HS 4.5, even when they already
have HS 5.5+ on a DW CD. While I disagree on some of his arguments,
he has a good point that
putting development resources into doing an upgrade only makes
sense for Adobe if there are compelling enough reasons for users to
pay to buy the new version.
Anyway, I have no idea if this is how Adobe is thinking, or
really what they are thinking at all, but I thought I'd start a
thread to see what you all think on this question.
What updates, features or fixes to HomeSite would you be most
    interested in?
(to the point of being willing to pay for an upgrade,
    assuming cost is reasonable)
Or some more detailed rephrasings that might jog your mind:
    - What things would you be willing to pay (a reasonable amt) to
    upgrade to get?
    - Or what things would make you look elsewhere because they
    aren't in HomeSite?
    - What bugs or things about HS drive you nuts?
    - What do you need/want to do in HomeSite that can't be done
    using it's extensions?
So, anyone willing to put some thought into it? Please be
honest, not just posting little gripes, or things that would be
nice, but that you wouldn't be willing to shell out some $ for.
(you can post those things too, but please note which are which.)
And let's keep the scope here on this, not on the broader
arguments about whether Adobe will or should do patches or upgrades
or whether their dogs have fleas. We can use other threads for
    that. ok? ;-)
    thanks!!
    jeff
p.s. No, this isn't Adobe's way of doing a user survey on the
cheap, it's just me posting to see what you all care about.
If it gives them motivation to do something - great, but this
is for us to talk together about what you think really *needs*
    improvement in HS.

The most important change for me would be the capability to
    use Unicode.
Neither editor I use (HS and Topstyle) support Unicode. The
    first to do
this will draw many users from the other. This lack of
    Unicode is a
    major stumbling block to me.

  • Homesite 5 User Looking At Dreamweaver

I am considering buying Dreamweaver and getting with that program after years of hard coding in Homesite 5.Most of what I do is HTML with some PHP. I use code for my website, made up in Zen Cart. I have Photoshop, Elements, Illustrator...all the usual suspects. Here is my website.www.possets.com
    My questions:
How comfortable would I feel in the code view of Dreamweaver if  am used to Homesite 5? Please just put yourself in my nerdy shoes and use your imagination. Would it be somewhat hopeless or one of those "what was I waiting for" moments?
I want to download my entire website into an editing program (like Dreamweaver) and take off a peice of  code from all of the pages. I had an SEO that put code on all my website pages and I don't really want to bring down each page and erase the code and then load back up each page singularly. I suspect that Dreamweaver can do this but I want to ask so I don't try to do something with it which won't work.
Thank you for your thoughts on this in advance.

DW is a code editor and site management tool. You can edit your current site in it, no problem.
DW has Code View, Design View & Live View which allows for instant page rendering without leaving the app.   I typically work in Split View so I can see my code and the results in another panel.
I never opened HomeSite so I don't have any experience with it.  DW does pretty much everything I need it to do.

  • Homesite 5.0-5.5 and Customer Service sucks balls!!!

It is obvious that Adobe does not look through their own
Forum Message board crap, as they requested for me to go for
support. If so, they would have answers to the questions that I
would need; in which I see ppl having the same problem as I do back
2006. (So I would like to say your system and Customer service is
    B.S).
    Okay to my problem:
What I want to do is have Homesite 5.5 installed on my new
machine from our old machine. One of the problem is that the serial
number that shows up (when I click on "help" and "about homesite")
indicates per customer service and sales, that it is for Homesite
5.0. Even tho in my face it says version 5.5, so basically they are
saying i'm lying. Yes, it is upgraded from 5.0, but i provide what
i see and what i see is the serial number that is provided under
    version 5.5.
Anyways, sorry for giving somewhat the long version of my
issue. I just want to know if anyone had the same issue and figure
    a way around this.
    Thanks,

Folks, I'm sorry to hear of your bad experiences both with
installation and support. I'll make one point of clarification: I
don't think Adobe ever promises to provide support themselves in
the forums. Rather, the forums are watched by experienced users
(some formally, some informally) who try to answer questions when
    they can.
In this case, since you're having licensing issues, I've not
piped up myself because I haven't had the problems or helped
someone resolve them. Perhaps someone else may chime in. Again,
    there are no promises.
Now, that may tick someone off, especially if they want help
just getting a product installed. But to that I would say that
Adobe has always offered free installation support. Perhaps the
folks you reached in support didn't suggest that, but check out
    http://www.adobe.com/support/programs/customer/gss.html
There are some caveats about how many times you can use it.
Perhaps you both have exceeded that, but if not, it seems worth
going down that route. Perhaps it would also take you different
people than you reached before. Hope that's helpful.

  • Font size when using HOMESITE 5.5 trial version

Used homesite 4.0 for many years but now with a new computer with vista, I'm using the trial homesite 5.5. The trial version when using the Browse mode displays the font size larger than what was displayed in homesite 4.0 but the size is normal when using the "view in external browser". Is this normal with the free trial version and will be okay when I download the full Homesite 5.5 version? Or maybe, there is some setting I have done causing this. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I don't think there's any setting inside HS that can cause this. With HS closed open IE (7 or 8) open the menu bar (Tools > Toolbars > Menu Bar) and from the menu bar (View) check that the Text Size and Zoom settings  are both Medium and 100% respectivley, then open HS and see if the problem is still there.
I'm not using Vista so if it's specific to that platform I doubt I'll be able to give any more help.

  • Wishlist for an Adobe made Homesite

Wishlist for an Adobe made Homesite
1 - Adobe takes the product seriously and doesn't try and use
it to push dreamweaver like Macromedia did.
2 - Adobe maintains a reasonable price for the software (well
    under $100)
3 - The new version should support PHP
4 - A built in CSS editor rather than a 3rd party application
5 - PLEASE, PLEASE include the ability to lock toolbars
Homesite is a text editor with some html tags linked to
buttons and a built in FTP program. It doesn't need to be more than
that. It shouldn't be more than that.

6 - The FTP program doesn't try and connect until AFTER the
program is fully loaded. This is a HUGE problem with Homesite 5.5
that is totally avoidable. It's easy to fix... you just have to
disable your internet connection before starting the program but it
is kind of pointless to have this crash keep occuring for no
    reason.

  • Need 3.01 update to Homesite 3.0 REG

    Hello,
I need to locate a copy of the 3.01 update for my registered
copy of Homesite 3.0 due to recent, and numerous, computer/backup
    problems.
I've done a web search and all references I can find are to
warez and cracked/hacked sites but no official site. I've rarely
worked on web pages in the past few years and I don't do it for a
living in case someone is wondering why I'm too cheap to go to a
newer product. (Actually I think I did have 4.0 a long time ago but
    preferred 3.01 ;)
A kind user provided the update file a few years ago when I
had this problem (..and yes, I did back it up - unfortunately,
finding the backup CD has been a lost battle) and I am hoping that
someone will be kind enough to do it again.
    Thank you in advance,
    Steve..

Nevermind... finally found the backup. Thanks...

  • Homesite 5.5 resource window will not dock

    Here is a screenshot:
    http://www.borlak.org/images/homesitebr.JPG
You'll notice the resource window (F9) is floating. It wont
re-dock. A coworker has the option under View->Resource
Windows->Dock all windows (or something to that effect). As
you'll see in the screenshot, that doesn't exist for me. This is
homesite 5.5 and I can't find any updates on it, or a fix for this.
If I drag the window to the sides, it doesn't try to re-dock
as you would expect. I've right clicked everywhere on the resource
window looking for some kind of menu option - nothing. I've also
tried double clicking the titlebar of the resource window (typical
way of docking a window), again to no effect.
I found the keyboard shortcut "Dock All Resource Windows" and
tried several different keybinds, and it does not redock the
    resource window for me.
I pretty much gave up on homesite due to this and tried a
couple different editors (including dreamweaver), but after a day
of use I would like to go back to homesite, but this is still
bugging the heck out of me. The only thing I haven't tried is
re-installing, but that is a pain in my work environment since I
need admin access and it can take a while to get that done; plus
that option seems a little extreme.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated;
    Michael

btw, I just had this problem myself.  Homesite crashed once then when I restarted everything was undocked.
Even though I knew from my own notes how to redock most of them, the snippets tab was a bugger.
Oddly enough, *sometiems* the snippets tab will give you that move-to menu option to let you re-dock, but not always.  Seems related to the order you redock tabs.  Perhaps you just need to not have it be last.
Anyway, I had to add in some of those registry values (while HomeSite was closed) to redock it.
I'll add those details to my faq as soon as I get chance.
One note to add to that, it seems that the DockHost value for the tabs is sometimes slightly different.
    Mine is:
    "DockHost"="AllaireTabDockForm1"
If you look at the keys under
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Macromedia\HomeSite5\Docking\
you'll see that one of them is something like
    AllaireTabDockForm0 or AllaireTabDockForm1
The DockHost values for the tabs should match that, so when you recreate the
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Macromedia\HomeSite5\Docking\frmDockSnippets]
DockHost string make sure it matches.
On a related matter, I noticed that there is a registry value :
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Macromedia\HomeSite5\ResourceTab]
    "DockTabLock"="0"
I vaguely recall this being something to lock all the tabs so you can't undock them.
I can't find that in the HomeSite user interface at all.  I'll test the registry value,
but does anyone know how you would change it in the HS UI?
    thanks, later,
    jeff

  • HomeSite+ bundled with Dreamweaver MX 2004

I bought Dreamwreaver when it was owned by Macromedia. At that time it was bundled with Flash MX 2004 and HomeSite+. This last piece of software turned out to be a very handy code editor which I have used ever since. As Windows versions came and went, HomeSite+ continued to function perfectly. Then came Windows 8! I CAN still use HomeSite but it insists on making me enter my forename and surname AND the registration code THREE times befor it lets me in. Then, it functions perfectly. Is this something I have to put up with or has anyone found a way around this? It might seem very eccentric to try to hang on to this modest piece of software but it does everything I need it to do and it is so familiar. Adobe no longer support it (if they ever did when they absorbed Macromedia).
    Thanks.

Well, even though windows 8 has had such a bad press, HomeSite had been so stable through windows XP and Windows 7 that I was reasonably sure that it would survive Windows 8. In fact it still soldiers on after the irritating triple data entry required now. The program is reliable, easy to use, presents all its functions in an easily accessible menu and has a VERY useful range of bulk search & replace functions which saves me a great deal of effort at this time of year when I'm changing masses of old menu entries and replacing them with new schools football related data ready for the new season.
